Unable to enter root password at terminal

I have an issue which i've replicated on a Sunfire V880 and V890 both running Solaris 9. When the root user has locked the console, you cannot enter the password to unlock. The keyboard has been replaced and is functioning correctly. The keyboard has been disconnected and reconnected (Sun USB keyboard) which does not resolve. The servers are also up and can be accessed using telnet/SSH on the LAN. When trying to type the password, nothing appears on the screen. The password box and cursor are both present.
I don't really want to have to suffer downtime on either server by rebooting to try and resolve. So I thought i would ask on here to see if anyone else has had a similar issue and can provide any advice, keyboard shortcuts etc.

Hi Chris, thanks for replying.
Screen attached to server. Silly question, but how do i restart the graphical login? I mostly administer the servers remotely using telnet or SSH ports so don't have a lot of experience of physically standing in front of it.

  • Trouble entering root password in Terminal

    Hi!
I'm having trouble entering the root password in Terminal. I read that the password doesn't appear when you type it, but I tried several times and I every time I hit the enter button, I only get "Sorry, try again." I tried changing the root password but still nothing. And I am sure I'm typing the right password!
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks!

If you are running from a standard account, you will need to run as an admin by entering the following (this is for 10.6)
    su - nameofadminaccount
That's su space, then a dash, then another space and the short name of the admin.
Hit return and when prompted enter the admin pword.
Then you can enter the sudo command, but you will again be prompted to enter the admin pword, as you would if you were actually running admin.
When finished, type "exit" to leave the "su account," then simply close the window.
    EDIT
Yes! I only have one account and that is the administrative account.
Go to SysPrefs>Accounts and check again you are running admin.

  • TS1277 HI. I have followed all the appropriate steps above and when I try to enter my 'Password' when asked, my keyboard doesn't work. No key press can be activated at all when trying to enter my password in 'Terminal. And I am in the 'Administrator' user

    HI.
I am having trouble authorising my Mac Air to my Itunes account. I found a discussion explaining how to go go into 'Terminal', then adding a command. I have followed all those appropriate steps and when I try to enter my 'Password' when asked, my keyboard doesn't work. No key press can be activated at all when trying to enter my password in 'Terminal. And I am in the 'Administrator' user. Can anybody offer any suggestions?? ta

Does the command that you're trying to enter in Terminal begin with the word 'sudo'?
If so, your keyboard is working fine. When you type your password after a sudo command, nothing is echoed to the screen for security reasons (not even the * that are normally registered in other user interfaces). However, the program is registering what you type.
Just type your password and press 'return' and the command will be executed (so long as you type it correctly; if you don't, you'll get an error message).

  • HT201240 I lost su (root) password in terminal. How I find or reset password?

I lost su (root) password in terminal. How I find or reset password?

Many people do not bother with enabling the root password, as the 'sudo' command gives most admins everthing they need, including the ability to become root
    sudo su -
is effectively the same as logging into the root account, only starting from your admin account.
    sudo -s
allows your root account in inherit some of your current environment variables
Once you are 'root', you could change your password using 'passwd'

  • My IMac has stopped seeing the keyboard. I have changed the batteries and the green light comes on saying it is looking to pair with the IMac but without success. I am left with the IMac switched on and I am unable to enter a password.

I have been using my IMac without a problem when I left it and went back to enter the password the IMac did not see the keyboard. I have changed the batteries and the green light comes up on the keyboard and then starts to flash indicating it is looking for the IMac but nothing happens. I have tried another set of new batteries with the same result. Is there any known problems in this area. The IMac is 5 months old.
    Thank you for any help

What operating system does your iMac have? (please always post your operating system to prevent confustion).
If it's pre-Lion you will have to set Mail up manually:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger

  • Unable to enter valid password for SMB sharing

I am trying to share files with my PCs, so I enabled the SMB and selected the user that I want to enable. When I check [in checkbox] the user then it asked me for a password for that user. I entered the CORRECT password but it kept saying that the password is invalid. I have never changed my password before but I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion.

And you added the directory you wanted to share with the + icon?
And it shows up on your PC?
Are you connecting by Start > Run > \\192.168.1.1\username ?

  • When trying to launch iTunes it freezes and I get the message: "Authentication Required. To access this site you need to log in to area "100656 on mellor.co. Your password will be sent in the clear." I am unable to enter a uname or password. Please help!!

When trying to launch iTunes on my PC running Windows 7 it freezes and I get the message: "Authentication Required. To access this site you need to log in to area "100656 on mellor.co. Your password will be sent in the clear." Because iTunes is frizen at this point I am unable to enter a username or password, or in fact do anything. Please help!! I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes numerous times as well as attempting all of the fixes that I could find on-line and still no joy.

That sounds extremely phishy to me... iTunes does not require authentication simply to launch it. I suspect you've got something nasty intercepting network traffic. That server may be set up to log the Apple ID that you enter so it can be used fraudulently. Try ComboFix from Bleeping Computer.
FWIW the domain mellor.co is registered to an accountants in Knutsford, Cheshire, UK, and produces the same authentication request if visited with a browser. There is no sign of a "real" publicly visible website at that domain which is a somewhat odd.

  • I changed my Apple ID and password, but when I attempt to update Apps I am prompted to enter my Password for my OLD Apple ID, and I am unable to override the Old Apple ID. How to proceed ?

I changed my Apple ID and password, but when I attempt to update Apps I am prompted to enter my Password for my OLD Apple ID, and I am unable to override the Old Apple ID. How to proceed ?

Delete everything bought with the old Apple ID and buy it again.
    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

  • I am unable to connect to my WIFI.It keeps asking for a password and when i enter the password it says that is unable to connect or i have entered an incorrect password

I am not able to connect to my Wifi. It keeps asking for a password and when i enter the password it either says Unable To Connect or Incorrect Password.
This occurred only after installing a new Wifi router from Qtel (service provider). any assisyance is greatly appreciated.

You should call Qtel technical support and ask for help.
Where did you get the password that you are trying? What does it look like? (Length, type of characters)
Do you know what type of security is being used? WEP, WPA, WPA2

I am unable to enter a £ symbol to a wifi password has anyone had  similar problem and found a solution?

On the US keyboard, it's option + 3.
However, when I try to enter that combination in Mail 4.4 or the Safari 5.0.5 browser, it is apparently has some reserved function and opens another window. It does seem to produce the correct character in Firefox 4.01
If possible, I'd suggest changing the WiFi password so that it does not included any 'reserved' keystrokes.
