Unable to erase Samsung Pro 850 in Macbook Pro mid 2012

I have just installed a Samsung Pro 850 in a 13" Macbook Pro mid 2012.
I boot the computer with a USB stick with Yosemite image on it.
When I try to installe Yosemite on the disk it fails with an error "Unable to unmount volume for repair".
After that I have tried to erase and partition in disk utility, but that fails with "
wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed".
It looks a lot like this old discussion:
Disk erase ailed with the error :wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.
I have tried putting the Samsung Pro 850 in an external USB case. When it sits in the USB case I can easily install Yosemite on it, and erase and partition - no problem.
Tonight I took the disk to a friends 2011 Macbook Pro 17" (running SATA 2). He had no problems whatsoever with the disk.
Why does it only fail in my MBP?

Did your friend also try using your USB flash drive installer? Have you tried this method:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Final Cut Pro on a MacBook Air mid 2012

    Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a new laptop with a 512 GB flash SSD. I would like to have FCP running for personal purposes (I'm starting to shoot interviews) and store more than 100 GB of pictures. Do you guys think that a MacBook Air with 8 GB of RAM is enough? I already have last year's Air and I'm really happy with it. I'm also considering the Retina but it's 1000 euro more expensive.
    Thanks for your answers

I use FCP 5.1 on a white macbook with no problem.
Although you'll seriously want to use an external firewire hard drive.
It seems like the fact that doesn't support something doesn't mean it won't work. It just seems like it may work, but don't call them with issues.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

You are certainly welcome to your opinion. I'll stick to my reply.
In view of the fact that there are numerous applications that run properly while creating a lot of internal heat in a MBP indicates that it does not follow that heat is an inhibiting factor (within designed parameters).  Thus my comment is certainly not opion, rather fact.  You certainly are entitled to your reply but a third party reader should be be apprised of what the facts are.
    Ciao.

  • What is so "Pro" about the MacBook Pro?

"Pro" is short for professional and the Apple brand has been synonymous with creative professionals for at least 20 years... I know, asI am one of them.
Now, the MAC PRO (tower) is no doubt, a professional grade machine. With 4 hard drives, 2 DVD drives, 4 expansion bays, 5 USB ports and 4 Firewire ports, and a whopping 128GB RAM, I'd say it lives up to the name "Pro". This machine IS the industry standard in film editing, recording studios, graphic design, ect... The one catch, is that it's not portable...
In come the MAC BOOK PRO. It's lightweight and has excellent battery life which is ideal for portability.
Now here's what I'm getting at: When you're on the road, at a meeting, or working in the field, you're probably not going to need all of the hardware of the Mac Pro, but only 2 USB ports? That sounds like a joke to me!
Say you meet someone at a cafe and you decide to transferring some files from your USB drive to his... That's it, you're done for USB ports. You can't even can't grab a charge for your phone, your ipad, plug in a digital camera or whatever because it only has 2 USB ports. And it really annoys me when I see these PC guys with laptops half the price of a MacBook and they're sitting there with all kinds of stuff plugged in. Notebooks like the Inspiron's and ASUS have 5 USB ports... FIVE!!!
So I ask you, "what's so pro about the MacBook Pro?" Having to constantly plug and unplug peripherals is quite amateur to me.

    rick268,
the “Pro” in MacBook Pro was in comparison to the “Pro-less” MacBook. If the two USB ports on a MacBook Pro don’t suffice for your needs, then you can either bring along a powered USB hub, or you can simply not get a MacBook Pro — get one of its competitors instead, which has the number of USB ports which you need.
I know I can get a USB hub, or better yet, I've been looking into a thunderbolt hub- I just wish I didn't have to sacrifice ports in Apple's conquest to make the thinnest laptop in existance.

Agreed. Don't even think about starting a long, disc-intensive process like that without both machines powered by AC.

  • OT: Mac Pro vs. Macbook Pro with InDesign CS4?

I currently have MacBook Pro 2.4 Core 2 Duo (late 2007) with 4 gb ram.
I have pretty heavy jobs once in a while, juggling three 100+ page brochures at the same time with heavy Photoshop work and Illustrator stuff. InDesign files have thousands (I'm not exaggarating) of image links.
Now I'm facing one of these assignments again and I'm thinking if I should upgrade to Mac Pro, because Macbook Pro gets very hot and laggy switching between three huge InDesign work files.
I see alot of benchmarks for After Effects, Photoshop etc and see the benefit is pretty nice, but no benchmarks for InDesign. Obviously, as it's not a render, but workflow smoothness issue.
Does anyone have experience on big InDesign work files on Mac Pro vs. Macbook Pro? I suppose it's more up to RAM and video card performance than actual CPU? What makes a killer InDesign machine?
Project takes up to 2 months and if I save 30 minutes a day due to faster work flow, I save many days of work and a lot of nerves.

Well in general a laptop isn't going to compete head to head with a tower. As you mention, a tower can run larger and much more power-hungry parts. So I would bet a 3ghz machine would definitely beat your laptop in a speed race. OTOH, whether you will see 30 minutes a day is harder to determine.
Maybe you could post some sort of sample file w/ graphics and some kind soul could do a few tests? I did this with some random file a long time ago to determine how much of a hit we were taking running in emulated mode on an Intel and I think the tests I used were:
Time to open, time to export INX, time to import INX, time to scroll top to bottom of doc with overprint preview on, time to print all (could probably do export all to hi-rez PDF too).
    One other thing:
people keep thinking the new Nehalem towers are going to drop "soon". So you might want to wait just a little bit longer to see if you can maybe get a little bit more bang for your buck.

    Any idea?

I suggest you buy your memory from OWC or DataMem. Both guarantee the memory works or will replace it if it does not, no questions asked, within their 30 day return period. I've used both for over 20 years, and no complaints.
