Unable to evalulate Baselines on some Windows 7 machines
Hi Experts
I have deployed a Configuration Baseline using PowerShell to 100 Windows 7 / 8 computers. 85 of computers came back with Compliant or Not Compliant whereas the rest (remaining 15) reported back as Error. These 85 computers do not have PowerShell ExecutionPolicy
set to unrestricted nor Bypass on the machine (meaning scripts are not to run as a default which is an out of the box feature for Windows 7 and Windows 8)
I have done the following
1. Ensured there is no GPO set for execution policy settings to be deployed to computers.
2. Restarted the computers - issue persisted
3. Ensure the Client version is correct - everything looks ok
4. Reinstalled the SCCM client
4. Tested the below
- I have the PowerShell settings on the computer to the ones below and clicked on Evaluate, it still shows Error.
a. set-executionpolicy unrestricted
b. set-executionpolicy bypass
- Ensured that the Computer Agent settings, PowerShell execution policy is set to Bypass and is deployed using the Default Client settings.
5. Checked the DCMWMI log and it shows the following errors.

SOME Windows machines can't browse for Mac printers
I have a Mac mini with an HP 5940 attached to it. I also have three Windows machines hanging around: my laptop, my wife's laptop, and my wife's desktop. My laptop and my wife's desktop are running XP Pro SP2. My wife's laptop is running XP Media Center Edition SP2. My mini is running 10.5.3.
My laptop has no difficulty with the printer. It can print all day long, browse for the printer, anything I want to do.
My wife's machines cannot. They cannot browse for the printer (browsing ends at the computer entry for the Macintosh). They had a previously set up print queue (evidently this did work before), but cannot print using it; documents pile up on the PC.
If I create a new printer on my wife's machine and enter the \\machine\queue stuff manually, I am prompted for a username and password for the connection. Entering my Mac short username and password allows me to print from her machines, until they reboot. Upon reboot, the print queue no longer works; documents pile up at the PC, etc.
I can see no difference in the way the print queues are set up on all of the machines.
I do not know why my laptop can browse the Mac's printers while my wife's cannot.
I do not know why my wife's machines require a username and password in order to connect to the printer, while mine does not.
I do not know how to enter a username and password for my wife's printers upon rebooting without deleting and recreating the printer. Which means I have to type the lengthy \\machine\queue stuff again, because browsing doesn't work.
Any ideas?And I have now fired up the desktop PC I retired when I installed this Mac mini.
Like my laptop, it has no trouble browsing the printers on the Mac or printing to them.
So, I have a total of 5 machines trying to print over the network to the Mac:
- My laptop PC works
- My desktop PC works
- My NetBSD box works
- My wife's laptop PC *does not* work
- My wife's desktop PC *does not* work
I don't know how the Mac can tell whether a machine is mine or my wife's so it knows whether or not to work... -
Window Machines autheticating to Mac OS X computers when they shouldn't
I have a semi large network that has a Linux machine with Samba, and uses that to authenticate domain logins & shares on the network.
However some Windows machines seems to want to authenticate to a Mac OS X computer instead of the Linux Samba machine. When the Windows machine trys to contact the Mac, it drops the packet and creates a error (on the windows machines) either on login or when accessing a share.
One suggestion that I have heard is that Mac OS X is set to a higher priory than the Linux samba computer. I have looked at some the files in the /etc directory but nothing about priory or anything like that.
I have solved the problem temporarily by turning off windows file sharing, and enabling stealth mode. But I want to know solve this problem so if someone who has a Mac OS X machine can work without worrying about accidentally turning Windows Sharing on.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Mac OS X (10.4.7)It /sounds/ like Samba is attempting to become a local or domain master browser. This can be prevented by adjusting the option "os level" under [global] to something very low, e.g.:
os level = 1
Typically Samba starts out with an OS level of 20, which should still cause it to lose all browser elections.
os level = may not be in /etc/smb.conf, but you can add it. Restart Samba and it should take effect. -
DVD not working on certain Windows machines
Created a DVD with DSP. Plays on macs and some windows machines but a client is having problems with them playing on all of their windows machines. I don't know the specs of those computers, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on create the most likely to work DVD.
Thanks!Let's assume that all of the Windows machines actually have a DVD-ROM drive. They'll also need to have DVD player software installed on all of them. While most Windows system do have Windows Media Player installed, it is a terrible application for DVD playing. It's best to make sure that ALL systems have both the proper hardware and software for DVD playback. A program like PowerDVD is usually the recommended choice.
Also note that some DVD drives don't like certain brands of media; stick with know high quality brands like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Stay away from low/no quality brands such as Memorex.

I have just purchased a new windows pc running windows 8 and am unable to install itunes 11 on my machine, when i tick download now it takes me to a screen that wants to show me whats new but has no tab to run installation or continue past whats new
Use a different browser.
iTunes can only be installed and run in desktop mode. -
CUPC - Unable to log in from Windows machine not on domain
Hi,
We are unable to login to CUPC (ver 8.5.3.192248) on a windows machine that is not on the domain, however connected to the network (e.g. we can ping CUPS IP and FQDN). We've tried pointing the client to the FQDN address as well as IP Address. We get "Login Failed" message (so no "Unable to connect to network" message). The user can log in just fine on a machine that is on the domain, so everything back end should be ok.

JoshI am using version 8.5.5 and that works fine on a Windows 7 that is not in the domain.
The only thing I had to do was add the server name to the hosts file, I have both the server name and the FQDN as in
192.168.1.1 cups cups.mycompany.com
You can define the server by IP address but it seems to move internally to the server name and it needs to be able to map that to an IP address

Unable to change screen quality when accessing Window machine FROM my Mac
Hi there,
I've been playing around with a copy of Apple Remote Desktop 3.1 and I'm very happy with the results when connecting to a Mac Server from my MacBook. We have quite a slow line so I use the sceen adjuster on the top-right corner of the screen to make the remote screen black & white to speed up the connection. I have another server here which is Windows server running RealVNC. When I connect to that machine and try changing the screen quality to black & white, it does nothing Can anyone change the screen quality when connect to a Windows machine from a Mac running Remote Desktop? If so, could you tell me your setup please?

Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade
Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
An internal error occurred."
Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):

At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

I recommend you examine the event logs upon an affected client machine. Specifically, look for the surrounding events on that machine (both System, and Application logs), for the hours previous and the hour after.
The time period may vary according to your environment (e.g. what is expected/normal for your environment, your configured GP refresh cycle-time).
e.g., are there network drops, or power drops, or system crashes, restarts at the similar time.
if it's a laptop, is it wireless? Was there a transition from wireless to wired operation?
Is there VPN in use?
If you are able to compare with another machine (I would encourage that), to understand what "normal" looks like in the logs, so that you have some kind of baseline data for comparison.
Other checks, maybe confirm that the machines are updating as required (have the relevant WindowsUpdates etc), and consider if some security/protection/firewall software might be interfering with normal Windows operations.
Also the potential for malware or virus, which can disturb many basic services (ensure a scan is performed and returns clean).
If you have the opportunity for an affected user to contact you urgently when the symptom occurs, check that the gpt.ini file is accessible from their PC.

984F9}\gpt.ini
This file is hosted within the replicated SYSVOL share on your DC's, so check that it is accessible.
You might also validate the particular GPO this refers to, and check each of your DC's holds the correct copy of the files for that GPO GUID.
If you open that GPO, and perform a minor change to it (e.g. add a comment), then click Apply, OK, this should cause the GPO contents to replicate an updated version (be cautious, depending upon the nature of that GPO !!!)

10g forms developed using windows machine is not working in Solaris machine
I have developed a form using the following version of Oracle Developer suit 10g Fomrs using WINDOWS machine.
My Application server is in a SOLARIS machine. All the .fmx are copied in the same SOLARIS machine in a directory.
I have copied the form (.fmx) in the same directories where the other forms are, in the SOLARIS machine.
Now i click on the menu item (menu item was already present there before developing the form in the menu. I did not have to create a new menu item in the Menu) in the windows machine.
The form doesnt appear.
Could you please tell me wheather i have to compile the form that i have developed in WINDOWS machine in some format of SOLARIS machine, or I have to do something else so that on the click of Menu item in Windows machine that form appears. Or Ihave to develop the form using SOLARIS machine?

Can't find printer shared on Windows machine
I don't know how to connect my MacBook Pro to a printer shared by a Windows machine on my network. I have the Windows path to the printer but I don't know how to get Leopard to see the printer. (I tried the Windows tab in the Print and Fax control panel.) Can someone please tell me what is going on?
Okay, some things you need to confirm for me.
What is the workgroup name of the computer sharing the printer?
What is the ip address and subnet mask of the computer sharing the printer?
What is your Mac's ip address and subnet mask?
If your Mac and the PC have the same subnet (usually the first three numbers of the ip address) and the workgroup name is the same, then you should be able to see the share. If not, there is a manual method of connecting to a Windows share.
What you need to do is customise the add printer browser. After selecting to add a printer, control-click next to the More Printers icon to see a menu. Choose Customize Toolbar. Move the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Now click the Advanced icon to see a new menu. Change the top menu to Windows Printing. In the field after smb://, you can enter the computer name or ip address of the sharing computer, followed by a / then the printer share name. For example,
smb://192.168.40.12/Canon
Note that sometimes you have to also use account information in the queue name, especially when the guest account is disabled. In these cases, the queue name would be entered as follows;
smb://username:password@computer_name/printer_sharename
Once you enter the queue name you can then select the printer model. For some models of printers, you cannot use the driver supplied by the vendor. So you have to look at using CUPS based drivers such as those provided by Gutenprint.

DB performance is very slow from a WINDOWS machine

We have written an application which contains a pkg that will write all the logs related to application in the form of a text file. We are using utl file operation to achieve the same. As of now I have 2 Setups. We have two IBM servers with similar configuration, one in which we have installed Windows server 2003 and the other with HP-UX. We have installed 11g version of DB In these two machines. The problem is with the performance of the application. The DB in Unix server takes less time for writing the log. For eg: it takes 10 secs to write 5MB log. But the same takes more than an hour from a Windows machine. I want to know whether the performance of the DB depends on the OS which we are operating from or else it depends on the parameters set for the DB? Kindly help me.

Kindly help me.I did some testing a while back between windows and linux and the difference on properly configured windows and linux database servers (same hardware same db version) wasn't worth talking about (< 10% often less than 5%).
That said it's not clear what exactly you mean. If you mean that writing a 5mb file on a windows machine takes an hour, then yep something is badly wrong - most likely with the hardware. I suspect though that what you mean is that you do a bunch of database work and that takes an hour on one machine and 10s on the other. This is likely to be a problem amenable to response time analysis, that is to say talking your workload and tracing it with timing information to see where it is spending the time. As you say it is your package, you will also be able to (and should) instrument your own code to see where the time is spent.
given the huge difference, you may well also find that statspack/awr will spit out your offending processes quite well as well.

We auto generate PDF reports from our Oracle Fusion Report Server running on Windows. The PDFs look fine on our Windows machines but they lose their formatting on iPhones, iPads and even some Windows Chrome browsers. I checked the Properties of the PDF and fast-web view is disabled on the PDFs. Has anyone had this issue and found a solution? I am trying to find where I can modify the PDF settings so I can perhaps try to embed fonts or play with the settings to see if anything makes a difference.

I live in Mountain View and use Google WiFi which is provided by Google for the City of Mountain View. For the past few months, they have been having a BIG problem with the corruption of downloads. Even teensy tiny ones. Perhaps you've heard about it since you're also in Mountain View. They have not responded to repeated posts from the forum... I have an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I haven't been able to update my software. I go to Lane Medical Library at Stanford to use the Windows machines there. I load whatever standalone software that I can onto a jump drive and install it at home. Unfortunately, some sites (like Apple and maybe even Mozilla!) recognize the computer you're on and only allow you to download software compatible with the machine that you are actually sitting at. This means that I can't reinstall Safari because I can't get a copy of it. And it looks like I might not be able to install Firefox 17.0 either. At least, that's what I'm trying to find out. "We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system." See what I mean? So when I go to the library, will I be able to download a copy of Firefox 17.0 for the Mac and install it on my computer at home? Thanks!
