That doesn't actually sound like a problem. If you were viewing "My Songs", switch apps then go back to GB this what should happen. If you were playing an instrument then it should restart with that instrument selected etc. However if you can't get from the "My Songs" display to a song then I guess something is amiss.
More drastic troubleshooting steps would be...
Remove the app and reinstall it or
Backup and then restore the device.

It sounds like even though the Mute switch is not on, sounds are not making the, well, sound they should, and the volume buttons make a blank volume indicator appear on the screen that does not show the volume level.
I wanted to recommend a couple of things.
First, I would reset the phone:
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If that does not resolve the issue, then you may want to try backing up to iTunes, and restoring the iPhone again but this time do not restore the backup and set it up as new to see if the issue persists without the previous configuration.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

I am unable to update my software version on my iPod touch. It gets to the very end and tells me that my session timed out. What should I do?

Every time I try and update my software version for my iPod touch from version 4.2.1 to version 4.3.5 I get within .5 MB (409.5 of 409.6MB) to the end and an error pops up telling me that my network connection has timed out so that the update could not be completed. I start the nursing program next week and need to download books onto my iPod, but it will not let me download the updated versions until my software is updated. Hi Jen. My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse. Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too. Now to the problem at hand. I have the same problem. I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade. Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade. But I'm sure other factors are involved. Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem: What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it. Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade. Hope this works. Charlie

On your new phone: Settings>General>Software Update. Once done: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You'll now be able to use your backup.

This exact thing happened to me and what I did was that I went to my itunes an unchecked all of the songs that were skipping. Then I synced my ipod without those songs. That seemed to fix the problem but just to make sure I rechecked all of my songs and synced again and everything is working fine now

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting that track from your iTunes library (if it's still in there then iTunes won't let you re-download it) and redownload it via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if it re-downloads in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that song and use the 'Report a Problem' link.
