Have just bought a 750gb Western digital HDD. To be able to use it to store video to use in i movie it needs to be formatted in mac os extended (journal). However when I try to do this in disk utility I get a volume erase error reporting an error on exit. the resulting disk is then unreadable until it is formatted back to MS-Dos (fat) again. Any tips or have I just wasted my money on a disk that is not compatible. On the box it says it is compatible with OSX 10.2.8+?

Try the directions in this article. They are for formatting a drive for Time Machine but will work just fine for your purposes.

The simple answer is just connect the external hard drive and drag the files from there to wherever you want them to go. If you need to do something more specific, you'll have to provide more details.

Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out can't be selected.What went wrong?

Must have done something wrong..
1. formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine. Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
2. moved iPhoto library to new external disk
3. Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
4. Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected. Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto. A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry? Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
Then try select it again.

does mountain lion supports writing on NTFS formatted external hard disks?

I'm getting immense slow-downs using Tuxera NTFS (latest release as of August 2012). I moved my home folder to an NTFS shared drive. Reading/writing to the cache while browsing in Safari is slow. Takes about 30 seconds for Finder to open my NTFS drive, takes about 1 minute to open an app and close the app. If I disable Tuxera NTFS and make my drive read-only, everything goes back to snappy performance (except for write-errors, since disabling Tuxera means I can't write to my home folder).
What shocks me the most is that if you visit the Tuxera community forum on their corporate website, none of their support representatives have helped their customers since the release of Tuxera NTFS for OS X Mountain Lion. It's as if the company realized they messed up, so they went silent.
I'm about to try the latest version of Paragon. I had it for OS X Lion, but it corrupted my entire drive after 2 months of use, which is why I tried to give Tuxera a shot. Here's to hoping Paragon has fixed their issues.

Wait.... can the BIOS on your machine support greater than 3TB?
Most cannot.
4TB drives, from what I've read, require an all new drive controller. As older drive controllers would max out at 3TB's.

Time taken to format external hard disk

I have just purchased a 1T external hard drive and now using the erase disk to reformat from FAT-32 to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I let this run over night (8 hours), however in the morning it still had not finished. As I thought it may have frozen I went to Finder & force quit the disk utility function. I have now started again after reading other posts, but I' can't seem to find anyway giving me an indication of how long this should take. Any suggestions??
Also, I have not used any of the security options.

Normally a reformat to Mac format takes about a minute, maybe less. Do you have one of the options turned on to "zero all data" or one of the other heavy duty "kill all data" check boxes selected when formatting?

Like Kappy says, TimeMachine only works on Mac's and it formats the drive itself, then it's files are mosly a pain to get at via anything else but TimeMachine on a Mac.
If you want something to backup the entire OS X side of the Mac and that can also be later accessed by a Windows PC (with MacDrive installed to read te HFS+ format), like if your not going to get another Mac again and want to get at your files, then you need a bootable clone drive.
If you want something that backs up only your user files to a external exFAT drive, (to be read on Windows, Mac or Linux machine) then there is plenty of software to do that, one is free called SyncTwoFolders and it does that, it makes sure both folders are Synced in ethier or in one way directions.

Can't write to a Windows formatted external hard disk

I moved the Windows XP formatted external hard disc from the Windows machine to the Imac. I can read files on the hard disc, can write from the external to the Mac, and can work with the files once they are on the Mac. But I cannot write to the external. I lack permission, the error message says.
I talked with Apple via my AppleCare arrangement. They tell me I will have to reformat the disc for the Mac before I can write to it.
The problem with the recommendation is that that disc, 160 gb, is over three-quarters filled with backup files for the home network. I can't afford to lose them.
The puzzle is that the network sharing is uneven. So I'm led to think there is some problem with my setup. From the Mac, I can read and write to two Windows computers and the internal hard disc, the C drive, of the third. When the external hard disc was attached to that third computer, I was never able to see it from the Mac.
None of the Windows machines can see the Mac.
Any suggestions?

When you go over a network, the Mac doesn't have to worry about writing to the destination disk, it just sends the appropriate TCP/IP packets and lets the PC that is serving the disk worry about writing to the disk. When the disk is connected directly, then the Mac has to know all about writing to that file system.
It does seem to me that if Apple could read from the drive, they should be able to write to it, but apparently that was more complicated and they didn't implement it.
As for the windows boxen not being able to see the Mac... have you considered installing Bonjour for Windows onto the PCs? My wife has PCs and I have Macs, but we're all networked together. We were having some networking issues, trying to share printers. So I had her install Bonjour on one of her boxes. Suddenly, all our networking problems went away. She could see my printers, and all my drive shares.
So you might want to think about turning thinga around and serving off of the Mac.

What is the best way to reformat an external hard drive from MS-DOS to MacOS?
My disk utility software (macOS 10.5.8) refuses to delete and reformat a new toshiba hd (STOR.E ALU 2, 1 TB).

Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Unable to format external hard drive

so I'm trying to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I bought a 2.5 inch hard drive and a caddy to transfer the data with.
according to the internet, I had to "erase" it, first. which is fine. but every time I try to erase it, it says "file system formatter failed", and the disk isn't recognised by OSX (although it does appear in Disk Utility).
what can I do?

When you look at it in DU, select the device (starts with the size in GB or TB, then some alphanumeric jibberish, left justified in the column). Choose Partition, and partition Mac OS Extended (journaled) and GUID partition table (may need to select that under Options... I forget). Name your partition (I'll assume you just want one), then press Apply. When DU has finished partitioning, another entry should appear indented a little below the device - with the name you gave your partition. You should be able to select this partition and then use Erase to erase the partition. Report back if this doesn't work.

Sorry, cchaikittiporn. Paragon does not seem to be a solution for your issue.

Formatting NAS hard drive as Mac OS Extended HFS+

I just got a NAS enclosure for my home LAN and two SATA hard drives to fit.
Installed fine, even using the Windows-oriented browser interface installation.
The drives show up nicely in the finder, and some files copy over without difficulty. HOWEVER, some don't. I'm pretty sure that the problem is that the install utility formatted the hard drives in Windows format, because the files that they will not now accept are ones with Windows-disallowed filenames, such as those with long filenames or Windows-illegal characters.
SO:-
I suspect that my problem would be solved if I could re-format the drives in the NAS enclosure to Mac OS Extended HFS+ format. BUT, the Windows-oriented installation utility provided by the NAS manufacturer (Linksys -- don't believe them when they glibly say their NAS boxes are Mac-compatible!) doesn't offer Mac formatting.
And unfortunately, while the NAS drives show up nicely in my Mac finders (both 10.3.9 and 10.5.5), they don't appear in Disk Utility, which is where I usually go to format hard disks.
SO:
Is there a way to format a NAS disk in Mac format over my home LAN?
As a workaround, i could try temporarily installing the SATA drives internally in my G4 and format them that way, then put them back in the NAS enclosure. But it would be a bit of a kluge, and I'd have to re-transplant them every time I needed to undertake disk maintenance.

Thank you for your response. I was able to successfully format the drives Extended journaled when they were out of the raid configuration. I was not able to format as Extended (not journaled) in the Raid configuration.
