Unable to format or restore - 160GB Classic

Hello. I currently have an issue with an 160GB iPod classic as it won't restore or even reformat now, and the iPod is completely blank
In the usual mode, the iPod freezes iTunes straight away and also freezes My Computer when I try to click on the iPod entry. In disk mode, the iPod is available in My Computer to click on and move forward on the drive page, however the iPod isn't recognised in iTunes at all.
Previously, I was able to reformat the iPod, which in turn allowed me to restore the iPod after several attempts and it started to sync the songs held on iTunes. Sadly this didn't complete and crashed midway through. I have been unable to get back to that restore stage.
I have tried this iPod on a seperate computer and it does exactly the same thing, however the other computer works fine with a different iPod.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need more information from me to work out a solution.

Okay All, I have figured this out.
This fix I know works on Windows but the equivalent functions exist in MAC OS as well I simply will not be able to assist with the step-by-step. So the goal here is to reformat the drive--basically 'slick' it so as to reload. The keyword here is "reformat" vice "reloading". Once you reformat then you must "restore" but I get ahead of myself. Here are the steps:
1. Connect iPod to sync cable.
2. Go to windows explorer window and find "___ ipod" or whatever your ipod is labelled.
3. Right Click on ipod icon and select "Format"
4. Leave default settings: FAT32(Default) and ensure "Quick Format" is checked
NOTE: This WILL ERASE ALL data on your iPod.
5. Click "Start"
Once completed it will inform you of as much "Format Complete"
6. Right-click and select "Eject"
7. Place one finger on the center button and another on Menu simultaneously for about 6 seconds. This will reset it if locked (as mine was). I was getting errors when trying to connect to iTunes and CopyTrans and this was the fix.
8. Reconnect to computer
9. Launch iTunes
10. "Restore" the iPod in order to load latest software and yada yada. Your iPod will NOT work without this. Upon completion
11. "Eject" again
12. Choose "English" manually on the iPod and
13. Reconnect and use as if brand new and loading music / videos / pics on it.
Hope this helps all of you. God bless.

I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format". Can someone please help me sort this problem, it's so frustrating!!!!!!

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Select characters/symbols won't display on iPod 160GB Classic since restore

I don't know if anyone has come across this yet or not. My new iPod 160GB Classic crashed after 1 week. Since restoring, I've noticed that certain characters/symbols won't display in artist/title names on my iPod that used to display just fine before the restore (symbols like + and ÿ). The restore function says that it restores it to the 'original factory settings,' but obviously not. I have tried restoring again, but that hasn't solved the problem. I've tried getting the track names from Gracenote (thinking maybe it was a font-specific thing), but that didn't help either. I know it seems petty, but I'm not sure how to solve it. The latest update has been applied to my iPod and I have the latest version of iTunes. Any ideas? I believe the crash was caused by a third party software which has since been removed. I have not experienced any problems since.

Probably, the easiest way to resolve this is to copy the artwork from one song on an album and paste it into every song on that album.
In your iTunes Library, choose an album that has artwork issues; choose one track that has the artwork and copy it. Then:
the slightly longer method is to check each song individually, until you find the one with the missing artwork. Paste (the copy previously made) from one of the other tracks on the album.
a slightly quicker method is to highlight all the songs on that album (make sure it is just that one album) and paste the artwork into the box.
Sync the iPod with your iTunes Library.

  • Upgraded to 160gb Classic.  Tried to sync with Library...Unable to copy!

    Greetings!
Need some advice! I just upgraded from a 60gb iPod to the larger 160gb Classic. Downloaded the new iTunes version 9.x. However, when I tried to sync my iTunes Music Library.. I received a message that I wasn't able to copy onto the new iPod.
Secondly, I have over 10k files in my Library, why is it that it only copied 8k of the files. What happened to the other files?
    Any other tidbits to know....

  • IPod 2007 160GB Classic Stuck on Apple Logo Reboot?

    Hello Hopefully somebody can help?
I have a iPod 2007 160GB Classic which is stuck on the apple logo reboot? I have tried everything posted on the similar topic below without success although I'm a windows user and not mac:-
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2609298?tstart=0
My Hard Drive Smart Data is:-
    Retracts: 336
    Reallocs: 6
    Pending Sectors: 4
    PowerOn Hours: 454
    Start/Stops: 2285
    Temp: Current 27c
    Temp: Min 0c
    Temp: Max 53c
I cannot restore, format even using HPUSBDISK?
Is it saveable or do I need a new hard drive?

I received mine today. Mine was Macintosh formatted already. No problems when I first connected. It took quite some time to sync my music library, but it completed successfully, with 13GB free. I 'ejected' the iPod, and I've spent a few minutes playing songs, trying the menus. No problems so far. Others have commented that the software is slow. I've not noticed any differences between 5G and the Classic. When you play a song it spends a second or so accessing the hard drive before playing the song, as my previous iPods have (most of my music is Lossless). There are images/icons on the right side of the screen in the settings section that appear after a slight delay when moving down through the menu - this perhaps gives the impression of feeling sluggish but it actually doesn't affect performance - you can scroll through the menu as quickly as you like, the sluggishness of the icons appearing is only cosmetic.
From my point of view, I'm pleased to say I've had none of the problems of it getting stuck on the Apple logo. When I first connected to the computer the Apple logo appeared for a moment, but then it changed to the 'syncing' circle animation and I've not seen the Apple logo screen since.
I think if yours keeps having the problem then I'd get a replacement. I'll certainly report back if I start getting problems - but so far it seems that everything is fine.
One last comment - I hadn't realised quite how different the software is. All of the menus, and the information displayed, the moving album art on the right side of the screen, the fact it shows how many songs are in each playlist etc is all very different to the 5G. The software on the classic is a very significant upgrade from the 5G - at first glance anyway.

  • Win XP Unable to format hard disk and install

Recently my system has got error about system hive error
    "C:\windows\system32\config\sysem file missing"
So when I tried to reinstall the system the winxp setup says
unable to format my hard drive after I choose C Drive to Quick Format(NTFS) and install option, this note appears
"setup was unable to format drive c:the hard disk may be damaged
make sure the disk is on and properly connected to the computer .If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated.See your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more info"
Thinking that the hard disk(Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA) might have corrupted I used Seagate seatools to check for error and the test failed. So I replaced the hard disk with brand new WD 160GB SATA hard disk and started installing the winxp. Again I'm facing the same problem. Even I checked with the new connection port.
I'm using AMD Sempron Processor. MSI K9MM-V Motherboard. dynet 512MB RAM.
As the problem is existing even with the new hard disk I think there is no problem with the hard disk or cable. the problem must be something else.
Please help me find the problem and rectify it.
(My hard disk is SATA and No-RAID, No-SCSI, BIOS detects my hard disk and I'm able to create partitions but unable to format and install WinXP)
I've used the same hard disk on another system with MSI Mother Board but it's working fine. Windows XP installs without any problem. I've replaced the hard disk in which the Win XP already exists(Win XP installed on another system with same configuration MSI K9MM-V Mobo, AMD Sempron Processor, 512MB RAM) But it hangs the system and when I restart the system it says,
"Windows Could Not start because the following file is missing or currupt:
    \Windows\System32\Config\System
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
I've tried this some 10-15 times every now and then this problem is popping up.
So I think this is not the problem with Hard Disk. It must be the problem with Mother Board. So please help me resolve this issue.

    Good luck!
But please remember what you wrote: "BIOS detects my hard disk and I'm able to create partitions but unable to format and install WinXP",
and what Bas wrote about listing your system components.
Have a minimised system when you install Windows.
A cloned copy of Windows can do this, for example one that a back-up program made.

  • Problem with 160GB Classic

So, I just recently installed the new 1.1 update for my 160Gb Classic. Everything worked fine. Then I started to apply some EQ's to songs (which I had not previously done) and iTunes froze up. I managed to end the task and quit iTunes and used the eject storage device icon on the bottom toolbar on my computer to eject my iPod. After saying it was "OK to disconnect", I did and the iPod clicked, shut down and came back on saying I had no music. However, when I plugged it back into iTunes, it showed that all the space my music had previously taken up was now listed as "Other". I don't want to have to re-load all my music. Can anyone help me?
    Here are my stats:
    Windows
    iTunes 7.5
    iPod Classic 160GB
    HP Computer

The easy way is just to do a restore. In the future, I wouldn't work on my iTunes library files while the iPod is connected. It seems to me that iTunes already uses a HUGE chunk of system resources, and having the iPod connected just uses even more. Then when you start changing ID3 tags ("Get Info"), it can really cause the system to CHUG. If you don't believe me, try just changing one ID3 tag on a 1.5GB movie file. iTunes practically takes over the computer until it's darned good and ready to do something else.
Or, I'd download [Tagger|http://tvtagger.wordpress.com>, which doesn't use nearly as many resources as iTunes, and allows you to edit many more ID3 fields than iTunes does.

  • Unable to update or restore Ipod, never once put songs on it

I am unable to format the Ipod. I couldn't update or restore it. All I get when I plug it into the usb is a message saying that it found a usb mass sorage device. I have Ipod updater 2005-09-06 and it does not recognize the Ipod. I have Itunes 5 and it does not recognize it either. What should I do?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you charge your iPod first?
When you run the iPod software updater, did you run it first or did you plug in the iPod first? You should run the updater first and then plug in the iPod as instructed.

You'll have to restore the iPod to factory settings.  Then sync all your content from your iTunes library back over to it.

  • Unable to format 400gb HD - Urgent Help Please!

I have installed a new 400gb Seagate Barracuda HD and set it as a slave drive on my KT4V motherboard.
My problem is that although I can see it registering ( fully - 372gb )in the bios and under disk management, I get a "Windows is unable to complete format" message when format ( quick/or full )  is attempted.
I read that this motherboard can only recognise upto 160gb due to lack of 48bit LBA support, but am confused by reading other peoples problems tending to be that they can see only a limited amount of space on their large drive while I can see it all but am unable to format.
Will a PCI IDE card resolve this issue. If so does anyone know what spec are required.
    I was looking at these.

    Many thanks for any help.

My drives are jumpered correctly for CS.
Also placed in the desired order on the IDE lead of Samsung 40GB = Master and Seagate 400gb = Slave.
My problem remains that I am unable to format the slave drive from within the 40gb windows OS via the windows explorer, Disk Management, command prompt, EASEUS.
Does any one know why/how  this could be the case? Bearing in mind it did format when set as the master and booting from the XP sp2  install cd.
I'm going to have to reinstall windows to the 400gb  and see if I can make the 40gb the slave. Which I did not try previously as that would have meant swapping the drives around in their bays. It was also not my preferred option.
Will have to do it tomorrow. Will post back my results.
    Cheers guys.

You could try a DFU restore. Like a normal one, but connect to the USB lead then press menu & select for 12 seconds. The device should reset and then the screen should go blank.

  • Is there a song limit on 160gb classic

I have two 160GB classics - one I have had for several years but the buttons have worn and it doesn't respond as well.  Since Apple wouldn't repair it, I got a second.  Both exhibit the same behavior though that they will play a playlist no problem but when I select a song they will freeze (apple logo) and even after a reset will not play again until they are re-synced with my itunes library.  I have an extensive song collection and use the 128k bit  compression to get as many songs on as possible.  Right now I have 35,000+ songs with some space left on my ipods (both are set to sync all checked songs).  Restoring them has been tried but due to the compression, each takes about five days to delete and then reload all the songs.  I am willing to do that if i know it would work.  As I said however, I done that with both and still have the problem.  I don't want to have to create playlists to swap on and off because it defeats the purpose of the extra compression to put more tracks on.  Before I compressed to add the tracks, I had much more unchecked but I was maxed out on space so if I wanted to add something new I needed to remove something, hence the lower bit rate.  I think it may be a limitation in the software and whatever it uses for indexing and searching but I have seen no documentation talking about song limits.  Anyone with a similar experience and/or suggestions?

did you experience some crashing of the ipod as well? do you know how many separate items you had?

  • New 160gb Classic Help

Hi Guys, my first post and hopefully not my last.
I got a new 160gb classic last week, problem I have is that once the ipod is shut down and left for over an hour or so I have to carry out a reboot on it to start it up.
Visited an Apple Genius who reinstalled the software but I am still having the same problem and need to carry out a reboot all the time.
Has anyone had this issue before ?
Do I need to have my ipod replaced by Apple ?
    Thanks in advance
    Jon

Your iPod is definitely not working correctly, you could try restoring it yourself and see if that does any good. However if it continues to give you problems after restoring then contact Apple about a replacement under warranty.
Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7
