Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged

I was experiencing a problem with my Windows XP installation on Bootcamp. The Windows side kept restarting, and I could not find the reason, so I formatted with the Windows XP disc and tried to re-install it, but it didn't work. I forget the exact error as to why. So I went back to the Mac side and re-formatted the partition sing Bootcamp, and now when I try to re-install the Windows XP on the Bootcamp partition, I get the error:
Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
What can I do? I don't understand, because this disk has worked before and I am on the mac side right now, so the actual disk does not appear to be damaged. What can I do?

Do a full format as it will check for errors and mark bad clusters if it finds any (full format = quick + chkdsk /x ), but only create one OS partition e.g like 30GB or something , this will be plenty enough for the os ,instead of the whole drive . Will save you time .
Wait with partitioning the rest of the drive as an extra partition until the OS is installed using diskmanagement .
Also make sure sata-dma is enabled in bios .

  • Win XP Unable to format hard disk and install

Recently my system has got error about system hive error
    "C:\windows\system32\config\sysem file missing"
So when I tried to reinstall the system the winxp setup says
unable to format my hard drive after I choose C Drive to Quick Format(NTFS) and install option, this note appears
"setup was unable to format drive c:the hard disk may be damaged
make sure the disk is on and properly connected to the computer .If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated.See your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more info"
Thinking that the hard disk(Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA) might have corrupted I used Seagate seatools to check for error and the test failed. So I replaced the hard disk with brand new WD 160GB SATA hard disk and started installing the winxp. Again I'm facing the same problem. Even I checked with the new connection port.
I'm using AMD Sempron Processor. MSI K9MM-V Motherboard. dynet 512MB RAM.
As the problem is existing even with the new hard disk I think there is no problem with the hard disk or cable. the problem must be something else.
Please help me find the problem and rectify it.
(My hard disk is SATA and No-RAID, No-SCSI, BIOS detects my hard disk and I'm able to create partitions but unable to format and install WinXP)
I've used the same hard disk on another system with MSI Mother Board but it's working fine. Windows XP installs without any problem. I've replaced the hard disk in which the Win XP already exists(Win XP installed on another system with same configuration MSI K9MM-V Mobo, AMD Sempron Processor, 512MB RAM) But it hangs the system and when I restart the system it says,
"Windows Could Not start because the following file is missing or currupt:
    \Windows\System32\Config\System
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
I've tried this some 10-15 times every now and then this problem is popping up.
So I think this is not the problem with Hard Disk. It must be the problem with Mother Board. So please help me resolve this issue.

    Good luck!
But please remember what you wrote: "BIOS detects my hard disk and I'm able to create partitions but unable to format and install WinXP",
and what Bas wrote about listing your system components.
Have a minimised system when you install Windows.
A cloned copy of Windows can do this, for example one that a back-up program made.

         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

    I appreciate the help!

Joshua ~ Welcome to the discussions. If simply re-starting iWeb doesn't help, this may:
"Go to Finder -> HomeFolder -> Library
Move entire folder "Caches" to desktop
    Restart iWeb and publish
    It may work now
You can now delete "Caches" folder in desktop."

  • Disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileg

    HI iWEB Guys,
I'm at iWEB 2.0.3 (iWEB08). Been using it for a long whie.
I have 24GB of .mac space with 16GB available - (derived from system/prefs/.mac)
I am trying to publish a series of files for some work collaboration.
Some of these objects are more than 2GB. Should not be a problem.
So, after Ipublish a few of them I get the following error message from iWEB...
*+Can’t create the file “MovieName_DVCPROHD108050.mov.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.+*
I have searched the forums and googled many of the usual places. The fixes for the range from "shortening the .MAc password" (which does not work (+this is certain rubbish!+), especially when you shorten it to the lowest permissible limit length ) to suggestions of maniupulating the ~/library/application support/iweb directories. (useless and out of date for iWEB 2.0.3.
*Other info:* I have also successfully uploaded these files to my iDISK in the hope that I could publish form there. Sadly I get the same error: +Can’t create the file “MovieName_DVCPROHD108050.mov.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.+
I have tried the following to no avail:
    • with NO other UPLOAD or download network traffic.
    • recreating the iWEB site and the offending page
    • tried with other files
I have run out of ideas.
Do you guys have an ideas on this?

Hi QuicktimeKirk.. thanks for this piece of info. This 2Gb limit is severely painful for iDISK seeing I have so much iDISK storage.
Thanks for this and may explain some of the error, but one of the failing files is only 1.8GB.. so I guess this is not the problem.
    2) as for playing your statement is not quite correct. And further my reason for wanting them to be uploaded is not for playing, just for sharing with colleagues in a remote work collabroation instead of FTP.
    Thanks for your thoughts anyway.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
This is the image contained in the file causing the problem...
I certain the original is contained in the Combo updates and on the OS disks.
As a temporary fix, click on the image above to open it.
Use Screen capture (Shift+Command+4) and click on the opposite corners of the image.
It will be saved as a Screen shot 2011-mm-dd at hh:mm.png
Right click on the filename in Finder and rename it to mwmac_white.png
I'm not certain, but the file might need to be moved into the Documents directory in the Subdirectory named for the website name you are editing. That's where it is on my system, but I moved a bunch of files when I restored from Time Machine about 18 months ago.
I also have many copies of mwmac.png, a separate copy one for each web page where the image appears in my website.

Can’t create the file “highlighter_welcome_header.jpg.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.

    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.

I keep trying to upload my web page and keep getting this error message?
Does anyone have a clue what could be the issue?
Can’t create the file “mwmac_white.png.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.

You disk is not damaged or full. iWeb just can't find that file. I had the same problem. I found what the file was, deleted it from the site in iWeb and added it anew and published. That solved the problem.
Go to your site online, in the Window menu select "Activity" window. When it comes up locate in the list of files that are in the site the mwmac_white.png file. Click on its url to see bring up a new window with it so see what it is. If it's one that you can find in iWeb and delete you can add it again.
I'm not sure how you would go about it if that file is one that iWeb creates on the fly when publishing the site.
