Unable to get Airport Extreme (new) to recognize wireless printer

I have setup my wireless printer (Canon MP620) with a USB cable and was finally able to print with it. However, my Airport Extreme is not able to recognize it or vice versa. I have an Apple Care subscription, but Apple support is of no use if they are not open when I am able to be at my computer to be walked through this setup. Does anyone know how I can get these two darn things to talk to one another? I'm sure it is some simple thing that I have missed.

Hello alienated, welcome to the discussions.
Apple will walk you through these steps, so you might want to give it a shot to save some phone time and report what you have already tried when you speak to them.

Hope this helps.

  • Unable to get Airport Extreme to work w/iMac G4 10.3.x and wireless MacBook

    Hi,
I recently purchased a MacBook and an Airport Extreme so that I could set up a wireless network with my old iMac G4 running OS X 10.3.4.
I am able to get online on one or the other machine, but not both.
I can get on the internet on the iMac if I plug both ethernet cables (from DSL modem to airport, and from iMac to airport) in to ethernet ports (nothing plugged in to the WAN port)but cannot get on the MacBook on internet this way.
I can get on the internet with the MacBook if I plug the ethernet cable from DSL modem to airport in to the WAN port and the iMac cable into one of the ethernet ports on the airport, but then cannot get internet on the iMac.
I know my OS is not up to Spec for the Airport Extreme but don't want to buy Tiger just to load it on this old iMac to run Airport. There's got to be a way around this right??
Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance for your help!
P.S. I also bought a D-link wireless router and had the exact same problem...

I stopped by my local apple retail store and had a quick chat w/one of the lovely employees. He checked with a Genius and suggested I plug the ethernet cables into the appropriate ports and make sure both computers were set to use DHCP in network settings. The fact that I was running my iMac on Panther (not Tiger or Leopard) should not make a difference b/c the iMac was hardwired via ethernet to the airport and had current airport software.
It took a little tweaking on my part at home, but using that advice I literally had both computers on the internet in less than 20 minutes. Those guys really are geniuses!
    Thanks!

  • I am unable to get Airport Extreme WiFi to work with Windows 8 Sony Laptop

My Airport Extreme WiFi works with my Mac Book Pro, iphones, ipad and DVR's, but will not work WiFi with my Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 8.  Although it does work with the laptop using a ethernet cable.  Has anyone else had this issue and can you please tell me how to resolve the problem?

Windows can have issues with the wireless name.
Make sure the name conforms to windows standard.
    Short, 2-20 characters
    No spaces,
    Pure alphanumeric.
eg AEwifi is a good wireless name.
Fred Blog's Airport Extreme Wireless87AD34 is a really bad name.
Test also by removing the security and just see if you can connect if the short name doesn't help.
WPA2 Personal is really the only security worthy of the name and the password should be mix of upper and lower case plus numbers.. keep it pure alphanumeric also.
Set fixed wireless channels at least for 2.4ghz may help, depending on your location geo standards wise.
Test 11, 6, 1 in that order. With no security briefly. And a short name. (different name on the two bands is also a good idea).
Then wireless is not compatible.. you should download another driver for whatever wireless card the Sony uses.. intel most likely and they have a reputation as lousy. So download latest and a few prior to that as well.

  • IMac with airport extreme doesn't recognize wireless airport express

I have an Airport Extreme that is functioning and want to extend my network via WIFi with an new airport express. The express is just accross the wall from the extreme but my iMac does not recognize it. I need all the help I can get on this one.

Start by placing the new AirPort Express in the same room as the Extreme and your iMac. Your iMac should now "see" the new Express on the dropdown menu of the AirPort icon on the OS X menu bar. Select the Express and the AirPort Utility should start up to allow you to configure the Express.

  • Getting Airport Extreme (gigabit) to extend wireless onto Ethernet network

The people at the Apple store told me I could do this but I'm having a heck of a time figuring it out.
I have a wireless network (satellite internet with a netgear wireless router)...I also have a couple old Mac computers that don't have wireless but DO have Ethernet (the router and the old macs are at different ends of the house and I really can't run a cable).
So what I'm trying to do is get the Airport Extreme to pick up the wireless signal coming from the Netgear router and share it out to the old macs that are currently all Ethernetted together. I was able to accomplish this very easy using my iBook...I just signed the iBook onto the wireless network, went into the Sharing panel and set it to share the connection from wireless to computers using Ethernet...worked perfectly! But I just can't figure out how to do this with the Airport. I don't think this is a WDS situation, so I've been trying to use the 'Extend a wireless network' option in the Airport Utility, but nothing has worked. It seems like one of the main problems is Airport Utility's reluctance to let me use the 64-bit wep password that the netgear router uses. It's a 10 character password that's acceptable by all the computers I have with built in wireless, including my iPhone but the Airport software keeps telling me that it has to be 13 characters.
    I'm just lost...any ideas?
    Thanks everyone!

Hello Agent*Cooper. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
So what I'm trying to do is get the Airport Extreme to pick up the wireless signal coming from the Netgear router and share it out to the old macs that are currently all Ethernetted together.
This would be an example of creating a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the Netgear wireless router and the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS ... so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AEBSn ... unless it's the Netgear WGR614 v6 model.
I was able to accomplish this very easy using my iBook...I just signed the iBook onto the wireless network, went into the Sharing panel and set it to share the connection from wireless to computers using Ethernet...worked perfectly! But I just can't figure out how to do this with the Airport. I don't think this is a WDS situation, so I've been trying to use the 'Extend a wireless network' option in the Airport Utility,
As you already know, Internet Sharing is a feature of OS X and not the AirPort base stations. In addition, the "Extend" feature of the AEBSn is meant to extend the wireless network of an existing AEBSn with another one. Sorry!
I'm afraid that you got a bit of a "bum steer" from the Apple Store folks.

  • Airport extreme and wired and wireless printing

I have connected an Airport Extreme base station (AEBS) to my cable modem and my Canon S820 printer to the USB port on the AEBS. My wired connection (via ethernet port) is my tower G4 and the wireless is connected to my macbook. As I understand it, the printer can be accessed via the ethernet port (which feeds the G4 its internet connection) on the wired computer. The problem is; on the macbook, it recognizes the the printer and can print with no problem. On the G4 wired, it cannot find the printer. I have tried the trouble shooting suggestions of turning off the printer and airport and reconnecting power to re-establish a connection, but it does not recognize the printer on the wired computer. Am I missing something here? I have been completely unsuccessful trying to resolve this issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the link, but the post did not resolve the issue. I am closer to a solution, but not able to print yet. Reloaded driver, restarted printer and airport and am able to get the correct path to the airport, but for some reason, I get a message that the printer has a communication error and to check that it is plugged in (yes), powered on (yes), and properly connected to computer (well, according to bonjour it is). So, the quest continues to resolve printing.

  • Using airport extreme to share a wireless printer

I want to share my wireless printer with a pc laptop located elsewhere in the house.   I cannot send documents to the printer via the laptop.  Is it necessary to connect my airport extreme device to my printer via a usb cable?   And then what must I do if that is the case?   If not, how do I get the pc to talk to the printer?

Is it necessary to connect my airport extreme device to my printer via a usb cable?
No, not if your printer has wireless capability. I assume that your Mac is printing OK using wireless, correct?
If not, how do I get the pc to talk to the printer?
That would be a question for the support folks at the printer manufacturer. They will likely ask if you have setup the PC for printing capability. If not, they should be able to provide some tips for this.

  • Airport extreme: my macbook, cannon wireless printer, ipad and iphone cannot connect to internet when Apple Tv and/or PS3 is connected

Please help!  I have an Airport Extreme (model A1143) as my router, and I have several devices connected to it wirelessly and wired.  I have my Macbook, Macbook Pro, iPad 1, iPhone 4S, HTC Thunderbolt, Cannon wireless printer, and Apple TV (gen 1) connected wirelessly.  I have my PS3, an external hard drive and DirecTV connected via ethernet cable (but sometimes my PS3 is also connected wirelessly).
I began to notice a few months back that my wireless printer had connection errors and could not print.  And I noticed soon after that, from time to time, the internet connection on my Macbook and iPad was extremely slow, to the point that I could not surf the web.  I tried several different printers before realizing that this problem was happening only when I had my PS3 turned on.  I tried both PS3 wirelessly and wired, but the problem persisted.  I figured it was a problem with the PS3, so I just made sure that PS3 is off when I need to use the wireless in the house.  But I recently bought an ATV (gen 1) and also noticed the same problem when it was connected to the Airport Extreme (wirelessly) - i.e., Ican't print, and my internet is super super slow on macbook, ipad, etc.
So, it must be that my Airport Extreme is the problem, not the PS3 or the ATV.  Is there anything I can do to fix this (i.e., some setting that has to be changed)?  Or do you think that my Extreme is just dying out on me and it's time for a replacement (I bought it about 5 years ago)?

This problem, for reasons unknown to me, has resolved itself on its own. After several attempts finally everything decided to work. How does stuff like this happen? Thank you.

  • Airport Extreme won't recognize external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I've searched and search and tried everything, but my airport extreme refuses to recognize my external harddrive. I'm wanting to set it up so my time machine so it will back up automatically - basically a poor student's version of a time capsule. Please - I'm getting desperate - nothing I've found on-line has helped. Thanks!!!

I have just completed hooking up my airport extreme to my seagate external drive. I have the newer version mb763lla airport. After hooking everything up, I created a homebase network, and Initially my two windows computers would not recognize the drive, in my computer. I plugged a usb jump drive in to the router to check if the router required drives to be formatted fat32 and the jump drive worked, jump drives are formatted to fat32, so I knew my problem was the format of external drive. Then I knew I needed to format my drive to fat32, so I looked around the internet trying to find the best way to do so. What I discovered is that if you go to the website of your external drive, they generally have software to help you format your drive. Seagate has discwizard, and I noticed Western Digital has some too. I choose to format my drive with two partitions one fat32 and one ntfs. I was under the impression from some of the websites I visited that I would have problems with vista & fat32, so I used a windows xp computer to run the format software from seagate. I plugged the usb external 320gb freeagent seagate hard drive directly into the xp computer, to format it. After running the software I restarted my computer, and the drive worked, and I could now find the drive on both my xp and my vista computers. It did assign different drives, on the xp the drive is called y: on the vista the drive is called z: . Both computers can write or read to the fat32 partition of the drive.

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes my Express when I try to password protect the network

When I try to protect my network with a password, my airport extreme no longer recognizes my airport express.  How can I fix this so I can connect my network and still use my network for airtunes??

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.
Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?
Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.

    Welcome to the discussions, Mike!
I assume that you have the AirPort Extreme setup as your main wireless router, correct?
If yes, you should first check to make sure that the printer is joining the wireless network and receiving a correct IP address. You will need to locate the MAC address of your printer. It's usually located on a label on the back or bottom of the device. Jot that number down.
    To perform this check:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click on "Wireless Clients" near the bottom of the summary page
A list of connected devices with their MAC address (or AirPort ID in the case of Mac products) will be displayed. Do you see the MAC address of your printer listed here?
If not, I'm sure you feel that you have entered the correct configuration settings for your printer, but unfortunately, that's not the case. You'll need to check your printer setup again to enter the correct settings for the printer to join the wireless network. It's almost always a question of finding a compatible wireless security setting in cases like this.
Open AirPort Utility again and click Manual Setup
This time, click on "Wireless Security" to identify the type of security that the AirPort Extreme is using. The printer settings must match up exactly with the AirPort Extreme settings.
    Post back on your findings.

  • I can't get airport extreme to work with iPad

I can't get airport extreme to work with iPad

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. We have two distinctly different printing problems. Let's try tackling them one at a time if you don't mind.
In order for the iPad to print to a printer it would either have to be AirPrint-enabled or you would need another solution, like PrintCentral for iPad or Printopia. Unfortunately, I don't believe your Canon printer is AirPrint-enabled. There aren't many printers on the market that currently are. All of them, that I am aware of, are HP devices.
Now for the PC. I would go with what you have already suggested and that is try disabling either the Windows or third-party software firewall. Which version of Windows is it running? Just in case it's XP, here are two excellent iFelix articles on how to do so with or without using Bonjour.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule strictly for system backup and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs

I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.

You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    You are all set

  • How do I get Adobe Elements 10 to recognize my printer?

I just installed Photoshop Elements 10 and want to print a photo using my Canon 9000 Mark II printer. When I click "PRINT" it says first I have to install a printer. How do I install this printer so that Elements 10 recognizes it?  My operating system is Windows 7 64-bit.

Hi I do have the Canon Pro 9000 Mark II printer as the default printer.
I just tried a couple of things. I tried printing the photo from the ORGANIZER and it printed fine. Then I tried again to print the same photo from the EDITOR and got this message:
Before you can perform printer-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer.
So it looks like the ORGANIZER recognizes my Canon printer, and the EDITOR does not!   How can that be?
