Unable to hear callers on iPhone 4

Is anyone else having problems hearing callers on your iPhone4?  If so, is there a simple solution?  I'm able to hear incoming callers utilizing the speakerphone and headset, but I'm unable to hear them through the phone's ear speaker.  I'm hoping I don't have to return the phone.

I bought my IPhone4s the end of March 2012. After a couple of weeks I started having the same problem. I could not hear the caller but they could hear me or I could not hear the other party when I tried to make a call. I could only hear them if I put it on speaker. I took it to Verizon and they discovered that the phone thought the headphones were still plugged in. (if you push the volume button on the side it reads that the headphones are in) They had not seen this before so they sent me a new one.  After a week with the new one it did the same thing.  I took it to Verizon again and while I was in there there was a lady whose phone was doing the same thing. They sent me a third phone but before it arrived my phone started working again. I didn't want to go throught the hassle of transfering the data so I decided to keep my phone and sent the replacement back. Now 2 weeks latter my phone is doing the same thing again. I've turned it off and on again and have tried plugging in the headphones and taking them out again but it is still doing it. I have it in an Otter box so I don't think anything is getting in the speaker jack. They even tried to clean the jack out at the Verizon store. I am frustrated because I don't know what I should do. Anyone have the same problem or have a suggestion as to how to solve this problem?

  • Having trouble hearing callers on iPhone 5.

I am having trouble hearing callers when they are speaking to me on iPhone 5, even though I have pressed the volume as high as possible. Other than getting an op on my ears does anyone know if there is a way to make the caller louder please?

Same here too!  It hasn't been working right since Apple kicked Google Maps to the curve.  I wish Apple would hurry up and give all iCloud users our own @icloud.com email address finally!

  • I cannot hear callers on iPhone 4s

Since this morning I have not been able to hear callers but they can hear me. I  can hear them if I put them on speaker phone or use my ear phones, but I cannot hear them normally with my handset. I have tried retarting the phone and cleaning out the earphone jack but nothing has worked. Can anyone else suggest a resolution without requiring me to reset my phone and loose all my content and data?

Try restoring phone. If that does not work, then make an appointment with apple genius.

  • I cannot hear callers unless using speakerphone. the phone is not on mute, the problem has started for no apparent reason and rebooting has not resolved the problem. Any ideas?

My iphone 4 (Model MD128B/A) running iOS 7.1.2 has developed a problem when receiving calls, for no apparent reason. The caller can hear me, but unless I switch to speakerphone, I cannot hear them. The mute button still functions normally. I have rebooted the phone but this has not resolved the issue. Any ideas about how to resolve this problem? Thanks.

    Hello manleyjohn,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are unable to hear callers though the receiver on your iPhone 4 unless you change the sound to the speaker. In this situation, I would recommend reading over the attached article and verifying that the troubleshooting steps have been completed. If the issue continues, it may be necessary to follow the link towards the bottom of the article and contact Apple Support.

  • I am unable to hear anything on my iphone unless I have it on speaker.

I am unable to hear my iphone at all unless I have the speaker on.  Has anyone experienced this before?  How did you resolve it?

Try disconnecting the headphones and then adjusting the volume, does it say headphones?
If it does, there might be something in the headphone jack, maybe lint, dirt, or something else in there.
You can try getting it out by connecting the headphones 5-10x or spraying compressed air into the jack.
If it doesn't say headphones or there isn't anything in there, try restarting or restoring the iPhone.

  • HT1933 Unable to hear all the music I have purchased on my iPhone iTunes account on my IPhone 5.

I am unable to hear the songs I purchased on my iPhone 5. The songs skip. I have already had my speaker replaced. Now most of my purchased music will not play.

Are you saying you are not trying to play the music on your iPhone? If not please describe the problem in more detail. But this does not change the fact that you've posted to the wrong forum. This forum is for iTunes Match trouble shooting, which your original post does not appear to be related to. You will get much more effective support help by posting to the correct forum.

    Hi, Laura.
There are some troubleshooting steps that we can process prior to opting for a repair.  If you do have a protective film on your device make sure that is removed and test to see if the behavior persists.  Below, I have attached an article that goes over some basic troubleshooting steps.  After all steps are processed and the issue persists, we can service your unit at your local Apple Retail Store.  You can schedule an appointment buy clicking this link http://www.apple.com/retail/.

i carnt hear my message tone, the sound it makes when the phone locks and opens, also i am unable to hear music when playing from my phone but my ringtone and alarm tone work.Ive made sure the silent button is not on,and the volume button on the side of the phone is just showing it blank instead of it going up and down.To try and fix this i have reset my settings and restored my phone, but now its just skipping the music i have purchased from itunes when in a docking station which is now another problem i have as well. Can anyone help????

    Hello dbrookes,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like even though the Mute switch is not on, sounds are not making the, well, sound they should, and the volume buttons make a blank volume indicator appear on the screen that does not show the volume level.
I wanted to recommend a couple of things.
First, I would reset the phone:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
From: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If that does not resolve the issue, then you may want to try backing up to iTunes, and restoring the iPhone again but this time do not restore the backup and set it up as new to see if the issue persists without the previous configuration.
Just incase you need it, this article will help with that:

  • I am having audio issues. I cant hear callers but I think they hear me. My keyboard isnt creating the little noise either.

I cant hear callers. I hear the phone ring. I answer and they can hear me but not I them.
the keyboard doesnt ding with each pressing of the letter either

For the Keyboard Clicks issue: Have you checked to make sure that the Keyboard Clicks options is toggled to "On" in the settings?
    Settings->Sounds->Keyboard Clicks
For the Receiver problem: I would backup the device in iTunes. Then attempt a Restore, followed by setting the iPhone up as a new device. Make sure you rename your iPhone something different as to not overwrite the existing backup you made. Doing this will not bring any of your information back onto the device, but will give you the opportunity to test the device with a new operating system installed on it. If the problem persist after the restore (set up as a new device) then the problem lies in the hardware. If the problem does not persist, then you will need to avoid restore the device from your backup, as the problem lies in a corrupted operating system. Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Hope this helps
