Unable to insert cross dissolve?

I am trying to insert the cross dissolve video transition in between two video clips and FCE is not allowing this. I get a small black "x" underneath the mouse cursor when trying to do this. Why is FCE not allowing a video transition insert in between these two clips? I made sure both clips were the same resolution.

This is almost certainly because you don't have adequate media handles, portions of your clip outside the section you're using in your Timeline.
Here's a good explanation:

  • Error: Unable to Load "Cross Dissolve"

I'm trying to create a QuickTime of a video project that I'm working on, and every time I try to export I get an error that FCP was unable to load the cross dissolve video transition. This is Final Cut Pro 6.0.3, and the project contains HDV, DV and DVCPro 50 footage, with the sequence settings for HDV (HDV 720p30 - DVCPro HD Codec). This project has been exported successfully before, in fact once just 2 hours prior to the first occurrence of this error (which was 2 days ago). Ever since the first occurrence, I have been unable to export it. Has anyone had this problem, or a problem similar to this? Does anyone know of any work-arounds or solutions? Thanks.

The usual cause for this is that the database has become corrupted - or one or more key files was somehow deleted. Take a look at the application log and see if there is a more detailed message. Unfortunately, if the data has been corrupted, you will have to recover from backup, or rebuild your cube.To get the database started, you can go into the database directory and delete the *.ind, *.pag, *.tct, *.ind and *.esm files. This will allow the app to start, but the data will be GONE - you will HAVE to reload and calc it, or restore from backup.Regards,Jade--------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

  • Strange image when inserting cross dissolve

    Hello,
I am having an issue with the cross dissolve. Everytime I insert it, doesn't matter where, mid-way through the transition a frame shows up from an earlier (30 sec back) portion of footage. I tried trimming the clip to see if it would work and no luck. I'm running the latest update of FCP-HD on a Dual 2GHZ G5. Help would be greatly appreciated. I need to get rid of this phantom image. Thanks.

    Hi Daniel,
This is not a solution but might help you get some work done.
You are not alone in experiencing this. In addition to what you describe, I've gotten the same effect a few times when I used a slug or color matte on a higher video track to create a transition.
In my case I found it was only happening when I was "pushing" the system – ie lots of sequences open, very large project, numerous nests, etc.
I quit and did a restart. Then I created a new project with "shrink" appended to the title. Then I opened the large project and dragged over a subset of what I needed to my shrink project. I closed the large project.
The problems disappeared. Sorry I don't have anything more definitive, and I hope that helps.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Issue- Cross Dissolve Transition creates random frame insert

    Hello,
I have had this issue for a long time, and whenever I render a cross dissolve transition, once in a while, it inserts a random frame from either the prior or latter clips that I apply the transition effect to.
I don't know how to solve this issue and could use help as soon as possible.
    Thank you,
    Th3On3Fr33man

    I agree with Harm.
This happens when one does not have enough Frames (Handles), beyond the Out-Point, or before the In-Point, to accommodate the Duration of the Transition.
For some more info on Handles, these might be useful:
In the days of A-B Roll editing, or with film, Handles were an easy concept to grasp. With current NLE's, it's more abstract.
Good luck, and do not forget to read through the Help files. In the days of manuals, this concept was covered pretty well. Curt Wrigley covers it in his Classroom in a Book PrPro.

  • Creating cross-dissolve from still photo to video

    Hello all ...
I'm try to create a simple cross-dissolve between a black-and-white photo (imported into FCE as an RGB Photoshop file) and a color (1440x1080) video clip. My problem is that FCE will only insert the dissolve on the right (video) side of the edit, the result being that the photo abruptly goes to black, followed by a gradual fading-in of the video. This is not the effect I want – I'm hoping to create a smoother transition between the two. I suspect that I haven't saved the still photo in the correct format, but I can't seem to find any help in my various FCE books.
So: How do I apply the transition to both sides of the edit? Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
    Alec

Tom, I figured it out. The audio for the video clip was overlapping the edit (i.e. it extended to the left, so that the video clip's audio ran under the still pic). When I got rid of the (easily replaced) audio, the regular cross-dissolve worked.
Now I just need to figure out how to make the transition last longer than 13 frames!
Thanks for your prompt responses ... I really appreciate it.
    Merry Christmas!

  • Cross dissolve problem - only works as fade in with graphics clips

I inserted three graphics clips with transitions (cross dissolve default) at the beginning of a sequence. The transitions only seem to work as fade-ins I have plenty of extra frames beyond the edit section of the clips. I tried to adjust the transitions in the transition editor - it shows the transition aligned to start at the edit, but won't allow mw to choose to center it on the edit or end on the edit.
Thanks for any help you can provide

Thank you - no, there seems to be a handle only on the left side of the edit (to the left of the transition - which sits only to the right of the edit). On the right side,(in the zone of hte transition) the cursor shows the symbol for the roll tool - r. Excuse my limited understanding of the interface and tools - I am just beginning to learn FCE.
I will be away from the workstation until tomorrow morning.

  • Cross Dissolve, Dip to Color not working

Hello. I am having trouble applying Cross Dissolve and Dip to Color to the transition between to separate clips. It works fine when I am transitioning between two clips originating from the same raw captured file (e.g. between two pieces I cut out of Raw 1), but I am unable to apply the transition to two clips from separate raw files (e.g. between a piece of Raw 1 and a piece of Raw 2).
The timeline only allows me to place the transition just AFTER the cut between the two clips, rather than straddling the two for a smooth fade. Any idea why this might be? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Enough handles?
    #1 Transitions "Insufficient Content"
    Shane's Stock Answer #1:
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.
a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve

I have a couple of clips I want to add the default Cross Dissolve between. The first clip is 04;04 sec., and the other clip is 04;12 sec. When I add the dissolve between them, it only comes in at a duration 00;01; while, when I add the same dissolve to the beginning or end of a clip, it has a duration of 01;00 (which is what I want between the clips.)
Since I have enough footage on each clip (right?), shouldn't the default dissolve be applied at 01;00?
(P.S. This same thing is happening at many places along the timeline.)
    Thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That's because both clips must have some "unused" material to "build" the transition itself.
    We call this "handles".
To get a 1 second transition, the outcoming (the first one) and incoming (the second one) clips must have at least 15 frames of unused material: 15 frames after the out point of outcoming and 15 frame before the in point of incoming one. This is related to the fact that FCE keep the same sequence's duration with or without transition.(iMovie decrease the duration of your movie when you insert a transition).
Instead of cuting your clips as suggested earlier, use the ripple tool (RR) and adjust the clips.

  • Theme uses theme-styled transitions instead of cross-dissolve

    iMovie 8.0.5
    According to the Help
+By default, setting or changing the theme sets iMovie to insert transitions automatically. iMovie inserts standard cross-dissolve transitions with occasional theme-styled transitions between the clips in your project, replacing any transitions already in your project.+
But when I add a theme (to an existing project containing manually added transitions) it does the opposite. All the transitions are theme-styled - except the one after the last clip which is cross-dissolve.
Anyone know how to make it work as per the Help - or is the Help wrong?

Sounds to me that it could be a cache or rendered video preview. Have you tried clearing your media cache?

  • Unable to insert messages in JMS QUEUE

    Hi All,
I am facing an issue while inserting messages in JMS queue.
The JMS Queue is on another weblogic server and now i created a bpel process which has a jms adapter to insert messages inthe jms queue.I am deploying the Bpel in my server which does not have this particular JMS queue.
I am unable to insert the messages into the JMS queue present on another weblogic server. where as i am able to insert messages if the queue is present on my server.
Can you please let me know if its possible to put messages into a queue on remote server from local server.
    Thanks in advance.

Most probably it seems like an issue of security. Please try to establish cross domain trust between these two Weblogic server domains. For more information refer to http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E1284001/wls/docs103/secmanage/domain.html#wp1175687_

  • Trouble with Cross dissolve duration

I amediting stils with motion and I can't get my video cross dissolve transitions to extend. they are basically 1 or 2 frames that's it. What am I doing wrong?

Trim your ins and out by an amount equal to the length of the dissolve you want to insert.
EG. 30 frame dissolve: trim outgoing clip by 15 frames... trim incoming clip by 15 frames... butt clips together and add the dissolve.

  • FCP 7 corrupt cross dissolve

I am using FCP 7 and I am now suddenly having problems with the cross dissolve. When I insert a cross dissolve into the timeline the second image sometimes jumps when the video is played. Then when I exported the video and played it at every dissolve the video looked corrupt and sometimes froze. (The audio was unaffected). I tried restarting FCP and the computer but that did not help. Any help with this would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

    As Meg wrote above...
If you are working with H.264 or mpeg source material, you need to convert it to ProRes prior to editing in FCP7.
That is the source of your problems.
While it might appear to work, sooner or later H.264 and other highly compressed MPEG formats will bite you in the backside.
There are thousands of posts on here that go into more detail on the subject.

  • IMovie 2013: can't add cross dissolve to video

I have tried everything. I want to add a cross dissolve between to clips. The auto add is off. Help!

    GeeD is right,
When you have two clips on the time line, one above the other, iMovie doesn't let you use transitions on the clip sitting above the timeline. This is more like how Final Cut Pro works with multi-tracks of video/audio on the timeline. The workaround is as stated to do split clip at time line and "Insert" the video at that location in the main video clip. Once everything's on 1 timeline, you can insert a transition as needed.

  • Lots of handles, no cross dissolve

I'm an FCE newbie. Why is it on a few clips I'm unable to apply a transition. I've got at least 10-15 seconds of "handles" on both clips that I'm trying to join. But when I try to apply a cross dissolve I get an x on the cross dissolve icon. The x only shows up on one side when I move the icon back and forth.
    Thanks video gods.

when I was switching from iMovie to FCE I made two mistakes/miss the concept of FCE how it handles disolves.... :
    a) both clips have to be in the same track.. you can not add a disolve to two clips on two tracks.. (that sounds too basic, but.. )
    b) iM grabs 'flesh' for a disolve automatically, adding a disolve to two clips shortens the total project length - not so in FCE: in the preview window you have to set in/out points (=> which leaves some unused material, you need for the disolve..); then add clip to timeline; then add disolve (=if 'flesh' is 2sec, you can not add a 6sec disolve...).
as said, this sounds too basic to FC pros, but when you're used to other, more consumer-ish editor, you have to learn that..
