Unable to install anything

Earlier today I tried to open up AIM on my Mac Mini and it refused to work. I restarted my computer and tried again. Again, it didnt open so I uninstalled it and attempted to reinstall it. When I tried to reinstall it, the installer wouldn't open. So next I tried to open another program, and the same thing happened. I restarted, uninstalled, and tried to reinstall, but again the installer wouldnt work. I tried one last time with a third program and the same thing happened.
Yes all of these programs were universal binaries.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
Thank You
  Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It would not be possible to state with 100% certainty that you don't have a virus on your system, but it could be said with 99.99% certainty!
There are no known viruses, Trojans or Spyware that would be capable of affecting a MacOS-based system, and in the absence of any evidence from the security specialists who monitor these things that malware targeting MacOS has been found in the wild it is most unlikely - bordering on the completely improbable - that you have such a problem.
What is most likely to have happened is that part of the Finder, the application which runs the desktop and controls your access to the system, has been damaged, or the directory structure on the hard drive has been corrupted. This sort of thing can happen if wrong versions of some types of software are installed - for instance if something like a copy of DiskWarrior written for MacOS 10.3 is used on a system running MacOS 10.4.
If you can't get anything at all to run, I think the best course of action would be to boot the system using the original install disk by inserting that disk, then rebooting whilst holding down the C key. That should give you access to the MacOS installer. Before you run that, open and run Disk Utilities, and select the internal hard drive on the left. Click Repair Disk. This will very and repair errors on the hard drive. Unless it finds errors and reports it cannot fix them, you should then do an 'Archive and Install'. This will archive your current settings and applications and create a new copy of MacOS. When that's up and running, you can then reinstall your software. Bear in mind that you don't really need to install AIM, because iChat interfaces with the AOL instant messenger service, so you can use that instead.

  • Unable to install anything after 10.6.2 Update

Hi, I'm unable to install any program (including the 10.6.2 Update Combo pack) after the 10.6.2 update.
When any of the programs I've attempted to install (SyncMate, Flip4Mac, the Update Combo) get to the "install" section of the Installer, it appears that the installer is unable to open or access the authentication dialog.
    I have:
-ensured that the user has Administrator access (although I can no longer turn that on or off from within the user itself)
-restarted getting rid of the PRAM and VRAM
-booted from the Snow Leopard install disk, changed the passwords of both the root and the main user
-repaired all the disk permissions (no warnings) and restarted several times
-verified the disk (no problems, no need for repair)
Does anyone have any advice, other than simply reinstalling the operating system from the Snow Leopard disk?
Help! I'd really like to install these programs.

sorry, lost track of this thread for a bit.
you need to figure out which preference files in the main account are causing the problem. the one that i suspected is not it. I don't know which one it is, sorry.
    maybe somebody else does.
one thing you can always try is the nuclear approach. move the whole folder /users/username/library/preferences to the desktop and log out/in. that folder will be recreated and all the files inside will be recreated with default values when system needs them. see if that fixes the issue. if it does you can start moving the files you need from the preferences folder on the desktop back to the one in the library. you'd need to log out/in for some of them. this is pretty time consuming so I would first see if someone else has another idea.
in the worst case scenario you can always migrate to a new user account.

  • I'm unable to install anything after upgrading to Snow Leopard

I've upgraded to Snow Leopard and after that anything I try to install stops at the Install button. No error messages. No crashing. Just don't install. Even the system upgrade didn't install...
    Any ideas?

this may happen if you are using a custom keyboard layout. delete the file /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.HIToolbox.* and log out/in. then try installing something.

  • Since my upgrade to Snow Leopard, i'm unable to install anything. Installer just freezes. HELP!

Even the Software updates wont install.

This is one occasion when repairing Permissions might help. From Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities.
EDIT: Should first ask you to describe what you mean by "freezes." What have you tried installing?

  • Unable to install itunes

I am unable to install anything on windows 7 64-bit. I cannot even update anything including itunes or any other software. A yellow window pop-up opens saying the file cannot be opened and when I go to support, its says something about the internet security. I have set it to Medium in the Internet Options. I even deleted my antivirus thinking maybe the "security" is too high. But in vain. Please advise.

  • Application Installer keeps crashing, won't install anything!

I've been having a bunch of problems since upgrading to 10.5.2. I got a lot of things fixed, and the system is mostly stable, but one issue that remains is that I can't get any installer to run. Application Installer keeps crashing. (Unexpected Quit)
I tried a few receipts and they didn't work either. System Update seems to run fine and completes installs. I tried P-RAM reset, Safe Boot, Repair Permissions. One of the fixes to my other issues was Disk Warrior. (But having run it recently I doubt another lengthly pass will help.)
So I am a bit stuck. (And really missing my 3rd party mouse and it's much needed driver)

  • Unable to install Mountain lion after defense grade erase

    Hello All,
I just sold my 13-inc macbook pro on eBay. As I am paranoid about my privacy, I decided to do a "defense-grade" erase. It took 10 hours after doing a 7 pass process. However, I am unable to install anything on it (Mountain Lion, Lion, Ubuntu). When I try to install Mac OSX I get the error, "Error installing OS X, try reinstalling".  Huh??
Please let me know what I should do. Can I not install anymore? Should I get a new one?
    Thanks,

    Here's what I did:
Plugged in my USB drive and started the computer with the option key pressed. I get one choice "Install OS X" which is from my USB drive. After I got an error message, I can cancelled it and under tools selected "Disk Utility". I then selected one partition and the default P table of GUID. So, this has already been done to the drive.
There is no option to select "Reinstall Mac OS X". All I have is the following:
OS X Installer, File, Edit, Utilities, Window.
Under Utilities, I have Disk Utility, Terminal, Network, Restore from Time Machine. I do not have a time machine backup so that does not work either.
Looking at the Installer Log errors, I find the following lines:

  • HT4929 I am unable to install OS XLion and get a message that it can't be installed on Disk Mackintosh HD because a recovery system can't be created. I am then referred to apple support but am unable to find anything which can help. Can someone help pleas

Unable to install OS X Lion as "...it can't be installed on Disk Mackintosh HD because recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple......"
Visiting the web pages does not help me can someone please point me in the right direction ?

OK. You have a Boot Camp partition which is why the issue. See the following:
It seems the issue is that the space at the "bottom" of your available space when Lion installs it's partition is already occupied by BootCamp. The fix was to go into Disk Utility; Select your Hard Drive; Select Partition; Move the bottom of your main partition "up" a bit to create a space for Lion; close Disk Utility; Install Lion; once Lion is successfully installed, go back into Disk Partition and drag the bottom of your main partition back "down" to the bottom of the window.
In your case use Disk Utility to "shrink" your OS X partition a little more than 1 GB.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired empty space. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
Remember that you only need to shrink the OS X partition a little more than 1 GB. Now, when you try the Mountain Lion installation the installer will be able to make the Recovery HD.

My first thoughts were that 'bootcamp' was out of date...needed an upgrade to register windows 7. Since then I am once again met with the same problem... how can it not see the I have already have a paritioned drived ready to be used for installition, is there a way to fix this problem? I don't really want to pay out for 'i-parition' only to merge my 2 drives back into one and start again from scratch =/. Seems silly to do so...what are my options?

  • Tip: Unable to Install or Update Apps Using the iPhone's App Store?

I had a problem today where I found myself unable to install updates, or install new or previously purchased apps using the App Store on the iPhone. However, I had no problem with the installation of apps when I plugged my iPhone into my computer, opened iTunes and dragged the app I wanted over to my iPhone. So, I did the usual: I tried a reboot, and, when that didn't work, I powered my phone off and waited a few minutes before turning it back on. Still no love with the updating or installation of apps using the App Store on my iPhone.
Here is what I did do to fix it:
I keep backups of my iPhone on my MBP and I back up my phone regularly. If you do not, you should start doing so. Anyway, I went ahead and plugged my phone into my computer and launched iTunes (I also update my MBP daily if necessary, so the most current version of iTunes was used).
Once my phone showed up in iTunes and I could select it, I right-clicked on the iPhone's name (I use a MBP, but I know Windows users might view this, too, so universal language is what I will use - for Mac users, right-clicking means using two finger tap on a touchpad or using the good 'ol Control-click) and selected "Back Up" from the menu.
Once the phone was backed up, I right-clicked again on the iPhone's name and selected "Restore from Backup...".
I made sure the value for "iPhone Name" was correct and that the "Last Backed Up" day and time values were correct and I clicked the "Restore" button and let the restore process finish completely (wait until your iPhone shows up in iTunes again before doing anything else with your phone).
Once the restore was complete, I was extra cautious and powered off then powered on my phone. Finally, I went ahead and plugged it back into my MBP and made sure that the phone showed up in iTunes.
Following all of that, I launched the App Store on my iPhone again, entered the password for my Apple ID and updating apps, installing new apps, and installing previously purchased apps from iCloud all worked again.
Please note that this process is much different than just simply clicking the "Restore" button on your iPhone's homepage in iTunes. That will prompt you to backup your phone, completely restore it to factory defaults, and, then require you to restore from backup to get all your settings and such back. This is not the route I took - I simply restored from an existing backup. I want to make sure that this point is clear. Although, if restoring from an existing backup does not solve the issue at first, then perhaps a restore to factory defaults followed up with a restore from a backup will do the trick, too. I just did not want to waste my time taking the much longer route first and was happy to find my iPhone's App Store working again by simply restoring my phone using an existing backup.
I have seen a lot of posts regarding this issue in the support communities, with none of them having an answer (even after calling Apple Support). I hope this helps anyone else that has had, is having or will have the same issue! Feel free to post comments regarding other solutions you have found for the same issue - let's have one discussion where all possible solutions can be posted so iPhone users do not have to sort through a bunch of unhelpful discussions just to find a solution that was not yet documented (like I had to).

I have iWork 09 with a family license. I am unable to install the software on my new Macbook Pro (the message is simply "Installation failed"). I wonder if I need to remove an old computer from the family license, and if so, how?

Yes, gladly. I am trying to install on a 13" MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.3. I insert the disk into the SuperDrive. The I work '09 window pops up with two icons: one Tim install and one that says "Read before you install iWork." I double-click on the "Install iWork '09" icon, and a window appears that says, "This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed." I click "continue" and see "Welcome to the iWork '09 installer." I click on "Continue." The "read me" bullet on the left lights up, and I see "Read before you install. . . ." I click "Continue," then see the software license agreement. When I click on "Continue" again, I am asked to agree, and I do. The window then says, "Standard Install on 'Mackintosh HD" and indicates how much space the program will take.
I click "Install," enter my password, and the installation begins. It goes through a validating phase and begins "writing files." It indicates that installation will take about 30 minutes (although that number fluctuates). After about four minutes it goes to "cleaning up." Then after just a few seconds, the "Summary" bullet on the left lights up and this message appears: "There were errors with the installation. You may want to try installing again." There is a large yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it, and a bold "The installation failed." Below that appears "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
At that point, a "Close" button is pulsating blue at the bottom of the window.
Sorry for the tedious detail. Anything revealing there?
    Thanks!
