Unable to install iTunes or iPod updater - Get InstallShield message

Just got an iPod nano and can't get very far.
When I try install iPod or iTunes I get the following dialog message with just an OK button
Dialog titled: InstallShield
Command Line Parameters:
/L language ID
/S Hide Initialization dialog. For silent mode use: /S
/v/qn.
/V parameters to MsiExec.exe
/UA<url to InstMsiA.exe>
/UW<url to InstMsiW.exe>
/UM<url to msi package
Click OK button and of course nothing happens.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi Larry!
Command Line Parameters
we don't know what causes that one, but we've got a workaround that typically works for the itunes install. (i'm not sure i've seen this before with a software updater install, but the same technique is worth a try with that).
first, download and save copies of the installers to your hard drive.
then google for and download a copy of WinRAR and use it to open the iTunesSetup.exe (installer) file. the free trial version of WinRAR seems to be working for people for these purposes.
if that works for you, let's give the same technique a whirl for the ipod software installer file.
keep us posted.
love, b

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

By design, the organizer (and any other database management systems) is there to prevent you from duplicating your media files. The catalog management allows you to have the same image in different categories or albums. Duplication in different folders is to be absolutely avoided.
The same image file can have multiple tags like 'family', 'vacations', 'birthdays' and be present in three different albums with the same names. On obvious advantage is less disk space. Another one with your present folder system is that if you edit one of your duplicates, the other ones are unchanged.
I don't see an easy way to make your present folder structure simplified for the organizer ...

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

  • I am unable to install iTunes due to update (vista)

I was prompted to update my iTunes to the latest version (along with QuickTime). when I clicked update, it deleted the old iTunes and made a shortcut, but I am unable to use iTunes or QuickTime. when I tried to reinstall them it opened the installer and just when it was almost done (publishing product information) it brings up a message saying   "An error occurred durring the intallation or assembly 'mictosoft. VC80.CRT,type=''win32" , version="8.0.50727.6195" ,publicKeyToken=" 1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b" .processorArchitecture="x86'" .please refer to help and support for more information. HRESULT: 0x800736FD"

I finally got the program to install/run.  I downloaded a third copy and saved it again on the desktop.  I selected "Run as Administrator" instead of "Run"  It must have been the 10th plus time I tried to install, but this time it completed.  I don't know if the "Run as Administrator" was the key since it is Vista, or if I just got lucky. Either way I am relieved.

  • IPod messed up after installing iTunes and iPod update...

Two days ago I updated my iTunes and iPod to the latest updates. Now my iPod makes funny noises that I can hear through the back (without any headphones or anything) and some songs will only play for about 30 seconds and then the iPod just freezes up, makes funny noises and I am unable to turn it off. I found that by holding down the 'select' and 'menu' buttons together, the iPod will restart. I have tried restoring my iPod and it still has the same problems. Any ideas? Is this happening to anyone else?
Dell latitude   Windows XP   iPod 30GB

This is VERY similar to what's going on with my iPod, except mine will reset when I try to play certain songs.... I think Apple might have a few bugs left in their new software...

  • TS3212 I cant seem to install itunes. I keep getting erro message. I have followed steps 1 thru 6. what can I do?

I have tried unistalling and reinstalling follow the steps provided in apple support.  Im still getting an error message.  Please help.

Assuming here that your error message is being described in your tags on the original post.
These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? (For example, 8007000B.)

  • Unable to Install Itunes for iPod Touch

My husband was just given an iPod Touch 16gb and he went to install it to his computer. He has an older version of itunes on there for listening to on his pc.
When updating it he gets this error message."Could not open key. HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\.rmp\OpenWithList\iTunes
He is about to chuck it. I have a shuffle and a 30gb but I know this one may be different. Help of any type would be great!

I stand corrected; After hours of research I decided to restart from scratch and checked my Windows updates history, only to discover to my horror that the last 5 updates had failed... Traced the error (800700b) to a corrupted Windows file system log, cleared it following Microsoft's instruction, restarted the computer and bingo, the Itunes suite installed without a problem.
So I suggest you take a look at your Vista update history for failed updates.

  • Unable to install iTunes to vista..getting msg that "Apple Application Support was not found" ..."Apple application Support is required to use iTunes. Please uninstall...again" etc.

Weird, is that is a good word. I have uninstalled, done a complete removal using a data removal program and still cannot
    install.

Went to M'Sft and selected FIX IT, then after that program found the iTunes app which would not install properly, selected RUN as Administrator and now everything is installed properly and working.
Just a note to those who may have had any problems.

  • I am unable to install iTunes due to Windows Installer error message on Vista

I needed to update my iTunes since I purchased the iPad2.  My Windows Vista machine will not allow me to update the program due to a "Windows Installer" error message.  I first attempted to update, then I uninstalled and am unable to reinstall the software."There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. • I cannot install iTunes 10.5. Get error message: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application support\webkit.resources\inspector\images\timeline Pill Orange.png"  I seem to be missing the "image file."  How to fix.

Teh problem seems to be tht I am missing the "images" file.  Installs to that point and stops.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
