Unable to install Office 2011 on newly installed HD

I had to replace a dead hard drive on my old 2007 iMac. Now I am unable to install Office 2011 on an iMac that had this version of office before the old HD died. I know there are restrictions on the number of installations. Must I purchase Office 2011 again or is there another legal option?

How is the program failing to install? You should be able to install the program no matter what, but when you run it you should get an activation window. At this point you'd enter your serial number ... and depending on how Microsoft is creating its special ID code for each computer, the new drive may or may not make the activation computer think you are activating a different computer.
If the problem is that you cannot even install the program, you should be able to download it from Microsoft's website and use your serial number to reactivate. If the activation fails you can call Microsoft and explain the situation. This is something I've done frequently since I also work with Windows. In most cases a quick explanation of the circumstances resolves the issue.

  • Can I download office 2011 using Lion

I am unable to download office 2011 as the webpage will not open.
The box for the software says Safari 5 is required.
Can I download with safari 6?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

You can download the trial version here. Scratch that, wrong link. That one's for downloading Office 2011 if you don't have an optical drive, like the newest iMacs.
Edit: I can't locate the trial version on Microsoft's site. It can be download from other sites, such as SoftPedia. Depends on how much you trust the source.

Everything goes well until I get to the install part and the setup does not ask me for password, effectively halting the installation. What can I do?

  • Unable to install MS-Office 2011 Update 14.1.4 on 10.6.8

    Hello,
I've got some trouble installing the actual available Update 14.1.4 for my Office 2011-Home and Student Editon.
When I try to install I receive the Error-Message "Office 2011 14.1.4 cannot be installed on this volume. For this Software, Mac-OS Version 10.5.8 or higher is required".
(Similar Problem during install the actual update for also installed Office 2008: "Cannot be installed, Mac OS 10.4.11 or higher...")
    I am confused.
In asked at Microsoft "Support" (ha, ha ha ..) and
1st) received a Email containing the Software AppleJack which fixed some minor  issues, Installing of the Update still does not work
2nd) received an Email from Microsoft "...cannot help you, there is an error in the Operating System, pls contact Apple."
    I am confused again...
The popup "About this Mac" shows the correct version 10.6.8, Update does not find anything to be installed.
This f*cking software from redmond is the only piece of software making some trouble, all other applications wors quite well.
    any hints?
My iMac (C2D 2.66, 4 GB RAM, Early 2008) is running under 10.6.8, all available Updates from Apple are installed, there are no hacks, no partitions, no Preview-Versions of Anything ... it is a plain vanilla iMac.
(Sorry 4 bad english, writing from germany...)
    Thanks!

  • Unable to install office 2011

I am a new iMac user and have a clean upgrade to Lion. I tried to install office 2011 by DVD and when the progress upto 70%, a window pops up saying that office cannot be installed when safari is loading on the background. However, I didn't run safari when I was installing the office. What am I going to do to install the office?

This was a good hint with the activity Monitor, i had closed Safari but had Not Seen the Light bue Button below Safari and the activity Monitor showed 7 threads being ongoing. After closing Safari safely the installation was Done in a jiffy thanks a Lot :)

  • My computer is stuck on installing (running package scripts) during an office 2011 update.  It has been trying to install since last night.  I can't turn my computer off or anything!  It's been frozen at "23 min. remaining" and isn't making any progress.

My macbook is stuck trying to install an office 2011 update.  It continues to say "23 minutes remaining" but it has been saying that since last night.  I am unable to stop the installation.  Every attempt is thwarted and I am even unable to turn off the computer!  HELP!

    Hi Kaylin,
Go up to the Apple menu and see if you can force quit the process. If not, hold the power button down for 5-10 seconds and it will shut down your MBP.

  • How do I get MS Office 2011 to install from DVD on Mountain Lion?

I just did a clean install of OS X Mountain Lion from a prepared bootable SD-Card on a new partition of my harddrive and wanted to install Microsoft Office 2011 using the original disc. But after double clicking the installer icon nothing happened besides the rainbow colored spinner showing up and disappearing shortly after and my optical drive making some noise. Activity Monitor indicated that the process of the Installer application doesn't react so I had to force quit it. I tried it multiple times to install MS Office this way using the disc but the problem persisted, also after a reboot.
So far my system is still in a pretty fresh state since I installed hardly any separate apps yet and the most intrusive one of them is probably merely Sophos. OS X's Installer app worked the way it should when I was installing iLife the day before using the Applications Install DVD that came with my Mac.
When I installed Office 2011 the first time, presumably one year ago on another partition on the same Mac which was running OS 10.6, everything worked fine and the same is true for the time when I upgraded to OS 10.7 (although I didn't install Office again, I just kept everything on the same partition).
So is there anyone out there who experienced similiar problems and can please help solve this problem?

Well, that depends on what you mean when you say "verified". But as I wrote in the first post I was able to install iLife from disc on Mountain Lion without much ado. And just now I tested a DVD with some pictures on it and the disc drive would read and display all photos in Preview.
And given the facts that I rarely use my optical drive at all and that my machine is only little more than a year old, a drive failure seems quite unlikely. But thanks for your response anyway!

  • So when I installed the most recent updates for microsoft office 2011 for mac, my ical info disappeared.  Still have the info on my Office calendar but it's no longer on ical.  It's also been removed from my phone.  How can I get outlook to sync with ical

When I installed the recent updates for Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, my iCal calendar was wiped out, as was the calendar on my iPhone.  I'd rather use iCal than Office and was attempting to phase Office out altogether.  Now, all of my information is on the Office calendar but not iCal.  The iCloud version of my iCal calendar is not up to date.  In any event, I couldn't figure out how to send that info to the iCal on my mac or my phone.  How can I sync my Office calendar info to iCal?  If that's not possible, how can I get my Office calendar to sync with my iPhone?  All of my sync services are set up in iTunes and on my phone.  This happened to me once before and I spent hours on the phone with Apple and on the web trying to work it out.  I NEED MY CALENDAR!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

As that's not an Apple product, you may get more help by using Microsoft's Office for Mac forums:

The other concern I have is that Office 2011 requires an Intel-based Mac and you posted in the older iMac (pre-Intel or "PPC") forums. If you have an Intel-based iMac (Apple menu > About this Mac..." will say "Intel" if you do) then I think you'll get faster and more accurate ansers to other questiosn in the Apple forums for newer iMacs here:

  • How many computers can you install the micro soft Office 2011 on.

How many computers can you install the Micro Office 2011 on?

A full (retail, single license key) MS Office license permits you to install Office on 1 desktop Mac + 1 portable (laptop) Mac provided 1) you own both computers and 2) you do not use Office simultaneously on both computers.
Beyond that, it depends on the specific Office package you have.  Some packages have more specific terms.
For example, if you have MS Office Home & Student 2011 you will have 3 activation keys permitting you to install it on 3 computers, period.  (Not 1 desktop + 1 laptop per license key.)
The license key pertains to the computer (device) not the number of user accounts on the device.  So, if you have 2 or 3 or more user accounts on your iMac you only need to use 1 license key for the iMac itself.  You apply the license key (activate the software) only in the admin account under which you installed the software.  Once you activate the software in the primary admin account, Office will be usable in all user accounts on the iMac.  Do not try to activate the software under other user accounts on the same Mac - if you do you will unnecessarily use up more license keys.

  • Trying to install MS Office 2011 for Mac SP 2 on my Macbook Air (Lion 10.7.3). I have to close Microsoft Database Daemon and SyncServicesAgent but can not see how to do so.  I have closed all applications.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Trying to install MS Office 2011 for Mac SP 2 (14.2.0) on my Macbook Air (Lion 10.7.3). I have to close Microsoft Database Daemon and SyncServicesAgent but can not see how to do so.  I have closed all applications.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Thanks Kurt!  I had tried all that and had tried closing both programmes from the application monitor, but SyncServices Agent refused to close.  I tried closing Launchd which is their mother application, but that just caused the screen go go blank.  In the end the two programmes let themselves be closed next time I tried the installation process so all was well.  Thanks for your help!

  • After installing MS Office 2011, Safari fonts are displaying incorrectly

I'm running OS X v. 10.6.4 on an Intel iMac.
This morning, I installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, and when I went to my safari browser and googled something, my fonts look like the image below:
Even as I'm typing this now, this font is showing the same way! I did a thorough uninstall of MS Office, emptied my font cache, browser cache, reset safari, logged out + in, restarted my comp 100 times, and I'm at a loss.
Is it possible my arial font was corrupted somehow? I know Office installs its own evil fonts, which I'm pretty sure I have now deleted. How would I get a new, working version of the default Arial font and reinstall it?

Office 2011 installs a bunch of fonts that conflict with those installed by OS X. Read section 3 of Font Management in OS X to see which to remove, and which to keep.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Installing Office 2011-Says software for installation not available

I've seen this same issue posted, but never found a resolution to the problem.   Office 2011 14.3.9 will not install on Mac Air that is running OS X Version 10.8.5.   Message says that the software needed for installation is not available on my computer.

What version of Office do you now have? You must have 14.3.8 to install 14.3.9. And 14.3.8 requires 14.3.7, etc.
