Unable to install on WIN 8.1 - no problems on WIN 7 tho

i am completely frustrated with my new officejet 8620, i got it home and installed it perfectly fine with no issues on 2 windows 7 machines (wireless setup) - tried to do the same thing on 2 seperate windows 8.1 machines (1laptop, 1 pc) and on BOTH of the windows 8.1 machines the setup will not complete, it sees the printer but when it goes to install it, it cannot connect to it. I spent over an hour with HP's India (very un-american and poor consumer experience) tech support and the best they could do was backdoor add the printer so i could print on the windows 8 machines however i cannot access any of the features because we did not go thru a full install to get all the other bells and whistles. I have tried to disable firewall/antivirus, download drivers direct from HP and have used all HP diagnostic tools to no avail. Where do I go from here to get this printer to work properly on Windows 8.1??? Its like the INSTALL program itself or something in WIN 8.1 does not jive. Like i said earlier it works flawlessly on WIN7 but I cant imagine keeping these WIN7 machines longer than the printer. Help!!

Hi @sempi112 ,
I see that you are experiencing issues with installing the printer on the two computers running Windows 8.1, but you didn't have any issues with the Windows 7 computers. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Are you signed in as the Administrator?
Please follow these specific steps, since I am providing instructions on unlocking a specific user account:
Run Command Prompt as Administrator. To do that, in desktop mode, press the Windows key and R at the same time, to show the run command line. Type “CMD” in the search bar. Now, you should see a shortcut for CMD above. Right click on it, and click “run as administrator”. If it asks you for administrative permission, please allow permission. In your Command Prompt window (as administrator), type the following and hit Enter: net user administrator /active:yes
You should see a message saying "the command completed successfully". After troubleshooting is done, you can disable this account by typing the following command into Command Prompt (as administrator): net user administrator /active:no. Restart the computer, and utilize the new account that is available, which should be named "Administrator".
Perform a clean boot on the computer. This will prevent most third-party programs from interfering with the software installation, since some third-party programs can provoke this issue. Here is some information on how to perform a clean boot: Performing a Clean Boot in Windows.
Reregister the Window Installer:
Press the Windows key and R and type in msiexec /unregister then click OK, then press the Windows key and R and type in msiexec /regserver then click OK. (make sure you are typing it in exactly there is a space in between)
Try running the installation again.
Here is a document with steps for unable to find and install the printer to try if you are still having issues.

Readers - Please, you must be VERY familiar with pc jargon and windows vernacular to accomplish the reset
of ALL the permissions in your registry.
Follow the ditrections below and pay attention to the notes for those running 64bit Win7.
Step one, back up the registry.
Step two, go to the MS KB: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf -ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en and download the file that installs subinacl. It is an MSI file, and will do a quick install of a few Microsoft files.  Hint: Look in the folder listed below, "subinacle.exe" may already be there.
Step three, create a batch file (subinacle.bat) with the following commands:  (Use Notepad - copy & paste, not the red stuff)
cd /d "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (only for 32bit/x86 machines)
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
For 64bit machines substitute for first line of bat file:
                        cd /d "c:\program files (x86)\windows resource kits\tools"
Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Command Prompt screen closes, may take 30 minutes or more.
Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again.
Ladies and Gentlemen; this worked for me and allowed immediate installation of two application packages I had been trying for three months!  (Including ITunes 10.5)

  • How do i fix the "Unable to install Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" problem access denied

My new iphone 5c will not work with my laptop.  The apple mobile usb driver will not install.  'Access denied' is the final message in the diaolgue box of the device load error.  The device is recognized but there is the yellow triangle with the exclamation point on it indicating an error installing.   I've removed itunes and its components as directed step by step ..... twice.....  I've disabled antivirus, firewalls, and even created a second admin profile in hopes that it would load the driver.   Nothing is working.  The apple person was supposed to call me back after we were on the phone 90 minutes.  Well.... I guess she did not.  Help!!!  I would love to sync my phone.  Any ideas?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • The "Unable to install Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" problem

Ever since I installed iTunes 10, I've had nothing but problems. I tried every fix I could find on the internet, unfortunately there are not too many, Apple's own website has loads of fixes but they never work.
I keep getting the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver come up in Device Manager with a little yellow exclamation mark and nothing I seem to do can fix it properly. I managed to fix it once, my iPod was synced and all was good, but once I restarted my PC, the problems started again. And I tried my friends iPhone which works perfectly and the same problem came up on my PC.
Cant someone give me a proper fix please?

I had the same problem with my iTouch when I upgraded to iTunes 10. I'm not sure if my problem was the same as with the nano but every time I reinstalled iTunes and plugged in my Touch, I got an error message for driver installation and the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in Device Manager with a little yellow exclamation mark. The error message that came up stated something about the digital signature of the driver not being right. The fix that worked for me was as follows:
Delete the 2 Apple Mobile Device USB Driver files. If you right click on the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in Device Manager and select properties it will tell you where they are located in the windows folder. My 2 files for windows 7 64 bit were:
    usbaapl64.sys
    usbaaplrc.dll
With ipod disconnected, restart computer and press F8 to enter boot menu.
Select boot option without digital driver signature support.
After boot, connect ipod and driver should automatically install correctly without error.
    Good Luck
I called Apple and they would not provide any unpaid support for iTunes issues.

  • Unable to install Boot Camp 3.1 on Win 7 on iMac Intel (suggestions?)

I got the OEM version of Windows 7, professional and 64 bits, and installed it via Boot Camp Assistant. Got it running (no keyboard recognition), and tried to install Boot Camp for Win 7 via the Apple site:
"Unable to install 3.1, needs 3.0".
No problem, insert OSX disk (10.6.3), click, aaand:
"Boot Camp 64bit is not supported on this model"
Uh?,... I thought that my machine was supported (it's running Win7 64bits!),... any suggestions?. Am I doing something wrong?. Any help will be appreciated.

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question but I'm hoping someone can help us. I went a step further than you. I have an iMac 8.1 Intel Core 2Duo 2.8 GHZ Processor (early 2008). I spoke with Apple Customer Support and made it clear that I had Windows 32 bit and 64 bit software and wanted to install on my iMac and MBP. The agent told me to order Snow Leopard for the iMac. I found out tonight I cannot use 64 bit on this particular iMac even though Customer Support had the serial number and data when we ordered the Snow Leopard disc.
So, I partitioned the HD equally between Mac and Windows. Boot Camp installed Windows 7 with no problem and then encountered the same thing you did. Install Boot Camp 3.0 before 3.1. When I put the brand new Mac OS X Snow Leopard from Apple in the iMac it said 'not supported'. I tried to install but it won't.
Funnything is Win 7 seems to be running. I am having problems with the numeric keyboard on the UBS keyboard. I haven't really tried to do too much.
My question to append to yours is how do I go about uninstalling Windows 7 and installing Windows 7 32 bit?
I'm sick about this but at least I believe I can install the 64 bit on my current MBP. I wanted it on both my computers.

You need to go to the computer maker and get a copy of the OEM for your system.  YOu cannot download a non OEM and repair "it" with the OEM CD'S.  The cd's are probably for repair not install.  Does your system have a restore partition?

  • I am unable to get iTunes to install in Win 7 64.

So, I have a fresh install of Win 7 - 64 Pro on my PC.  No problems of any sort with any other program.  Recieved an iPad 2 as a gift yesterday.  Went to install iTunes 11.  Am receiving a message that I am unable to install because of a Windows Installer error and to contact 'my support person'.  I'm not in safe mode, and I've had no issues installing anything else on this pc, and am receiving no other error messages, so I'm looking for some help in figuring this out.
    Thanks!

While continuing my hunt for info, I found this discussion, and it resolved my problem:

I've been unable to install Elements 11 on Windows 8 Pro. I upgraded from Win 7 Pro. It says my Product key is invalid.

The serial number you’ve sent is not an Adobe serial number. Please double check the serial number. It should be a 24 digit serial key and all numeric.

  • Unable to install iTunes 10.5.1 on WIN 7 Pro

Guys, im unable to install the latest iTunes on my laptop. It keeps telling me that
"There is a problem with this Windoes Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
I was frustrated by that and i uninstalled the iTunes 10.4.1.10. Now that i can't install iTunes that i downloaded from apple.com.

  • Unable to install iTunes 10.5 on Win 7 laptop - "Problem with Windows Installer program"

I get the following when trying to install version 10.5
I have uninstalled everything Apple, emptied temp files, restarted the computer and I'm still unable to install the lasted iTunes.
    Any thoughts?

    1. Go to softpedia.com
    2. In the search box in softpedia.com web site type in 'Windows Installer Cleanup Utility'. Click on GO
3  On the next page, at the bottom you will see in blue 'Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 2.5.0.1 by Microsoft'
4 Click on that link and it will take you to another page. On the left side you will see a 'download' button in blue colour. Click on that button and it will take you to the next page.
5 Click on link that reads: 'Softpedia Mirror (US) exe', A download window will appear. Click on 'save file'.
6 Install 'Windows Installer ClenaUp Utility' program.
7 After installing program, open up the program and scroll down the list till you find 'Apple Software Update'
8 Highlight it and click remove.
9 Now you can install itunes 10.5
This is exactly what I did and it worked for me like a charm. I even updated my iphone with IOS 5 tonight.
There is another way which I learned later which is easier and faster. I am running Windows 7. Go to 'Control Panel'. Scroll down to 'Programs and Features' and click on it. Scroll down till you see 'Apple Software Update' and right click on it and click 'uninstall' and then install itunes 10.5. That should work also. I've heard that some people can't see it in control panel so the other way would be to do as I did and download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. I hope I've made this as simple as possible for you. Good luck.

  • Unable to install Win XP

Hi. Have been using Win XP on 32GB partition setup via Boot Camp for some while and worked well. I now need more Windows space so have used Boot Camp to restore everything and have partitioned again to 100GB and tried to install Windows again(using my original install disk) I get lots of hard disk activity but just a black screen! I have a 20" apple monitor and a Viewsonic 20" monitor connected. I have seen the MXM update info' for black screens using a 24" monitor but my system tells me I don't need it. Can anyone please help me get Windows XP installed on my new 100GB partition? Thanks.

  • Msi k9a2: unable to install win xp (sp3) on WD 150Gb velociraptor

I recently bought a MSI k9a2 V2 mobo, with 2x1Gb 1066 memory and AMD 9850. I installed win xp on a WD 150Gb raptor connected to sata1. Bios upgraded to 1.5, I got the mem to run on 1066 by changing the bios mem setting to 1:2.66.
A week later I wanted the board changed to  V1 because I need the Promise Sata 5 and 6 ports.
This board is an absolute pain: WD raptor not recognised by sb600 raid port1, even though the correct driver is installed. Ports 2 thru 4 see the drive, but I still cannot install the win xp os, I can connect the drive to the promise connectors, but I also cannot install the os. Installing win xp os on a 7200rpm drive (ie Samsung 1Gb) works, but I want it on a raptor.
MSI support tells me to upgrade to bios 1.65, which is brand new since last week, and is not even put on their website yet, I had to get a password and login to get it from their ftp. I succesfully installed the new bios, but no change.
This board has a Tom's Hardware recommendation but it absolutely does not deserve it. I find it unacceptable that installing an os requires such a pain. If and when I find a solution I will post it, but I would very much appreciate help or input from anyone with similar experiences and/or new ideas.

    just an FYI
I too had problems with 3 MSI K9A2 Platinum and the 9950BE, ATI 4850 and 4GB OCZ 1066, but i managed to find the problems... I think
OK, the first board would not recognize any of my HD's (4 10k Raptors) SOLUTION: BAD BOARD=EXCHANGE
OK the second board was very unstable, would throw BSOD all the time even just loading WINDOWS VISTA either on IDE, RAID on SB600 or Promise RAID...  SOLUTION: EXCHANGE (thinking it was defective)
3rd board; I really wanted the 4x PCIe 16x slots and no other board has this layout, so I started HARD on the board, loaded VISTA 64 in IDE mode ch1 on a RAPTOR 10k, after loading I got a BSOD  , so I boot and entered the bios, I set all at default and started one MENU at the time, i found the my RAM was not working at 1066, but at 800MHz, so i change it to 1:2.66 for a 1066MHZ, and booted.
another BSOD  , I went back to the bios and checked the voltage to the ram...   , my ram is rated for 2.1v not 1.8 that the system was delivering  so i manually changed the voltage, and booted...  well it lasted longer, I was able to load some applications and games... and then BSOD    what else can be wrong
I then loaded AMD overdrive utils to monitor the system and try to OC the Phenom ( call me crazy for trying to Overclock a non stable system, but i wanted to find out why it was not stable...)
so I let the system autoOC and it crashed every single time...
I don't give up easy..  the Phenom 9950 is know for easy OC to at least 3.0Ghz, so I manually started OC the CPU on the Overdrive software and checking the temp and voltage.. and then I discover one thing  , as i changed the multiplier slider on the AMD overdrive, it adjusted the voltage up slightly and i was able to OC to 3.0 Ghz and run benchmarks, but the fun soon stop by the dreaded BSOD, so i started back at the bios by setting the processor multiplier by default, but increase the voltage (so no OC'ing is done now, just up the voltage)
4hrs later no BSOD's and the system is running like a champ  , so it came to me... the CPU Cores need more voltage even at the default speed, as i noticed that they run OK w/o BSOD as long as the don't exceed about 60-80% load for long before system HUNG or BSOD, now all I needed was to OC and boost the volage even higher
    so far I been running error free @ 15x Multiplier, 1.448v 3.0Ghz, OCZ ram 1066MHz @ 2.1 5-5-5-18 per LABEL on RAM, ATI 4850 Saphire OC'd to 690MHz core/ 2196MHz Memory (1098)
so to summarized all this; the Phenom CPU's are under voltage! and this board you need to enter all the voltage, timings, ratios for the RAM.
I hope this helps other users, but be careful not to push the voltage to high!
