Unable to install OS X Mavericks to main HDD on Mini. Help Please!

Hello, I'm having a difficult time installing the update from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. I had no trouble when I updated to Mountain Lion. I downloaded the Mavericks update but when it comes to the point that I need to select the disk where I want to install it is where I get stumped. I try to select the main hdd but it wont let me and I get a message in a liitle box above the main hdd icon saying "This disk is used for Time Machine backups". The problem is that it's not true. I have a seperate external HDD for my Time Machine backups. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance for any help!!
Mark
Mac Mini 2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB Ram 1067MHz DDR3

So if I have DDR2 Ram, there is no possibility of upgrading to Mavericks?
I installed mavericks onto an external hard drive (using a backup of my early
2011 mac book pro), tried to boot it with my early 2008 macbook and
this is what the screen looks like. Hoping to install Mavericks on my early 2008 macbook too.
Any advice would be appreciated

Yes, I reviewed all the requirements...and yes, I have the required disk space. Frustrating experience, this is. So far, everything else seems to be working out as I expected.

You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

Please help. I am unable to install Adobe flash & Java in my system

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Need to know your Mac model. If it's a PowerPC, the max OS is Leopard 10.5.x. If it's an Intel procesor, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (for $29) & later to Lion.

  • HT201364 I am unable to install OS X Mavericks on my macbook air 13" it asks me to remove items from my start up disk...how do I do that?

How does one remove items in the start up disk....
    Thank you

You apparently have filled your boot disk to a point where the remaining space is below Mavericks installation requirements. It is implying that you need to review your login directory for very large files, or folders.
Open a new Finder window. In the left nav, select your short login name. Then change the View to list view. If the Size column arrow is pointing up, click it to down and your folders and files will be listed in descending storage use. The folders with an engraved emblem on them were created by the operating system, so do not remove them. Also, resist removing Apple applications found in /Applications.
Top candidates would be huge iTunes Music or applications content, iPhoto, or video collections. Whatever is taking up your storage will stand out. Generally, you should stay out of your Library folder.

  • Unable to install OS X Mountain Lion after HD clean...PLEASE HELP

Ok, I have two issues and hopefully I can have them resolved here.
I currently live in Italy, the local Apple store recently replaced my HD about 6-8 months ago and I reinstalled all my files using time machine when I took it home.
Recently it began running very slow (getting the pinwheel when I try to simply use Safari).  I took it to an apple store when I was back in America and was told I needed to erase my HD and start over.  When the HD was replaced in Italy, the apple store installed Moutain lion free of charge for me.  After my clean erases, when I try to install Mountain Lion using the disk utilities, I am unable to because apple does not recognize my apple id as purchasing this software.  How to I use my 2007 macbook pro to purchase and download the latest mountain lion when I am only able to get disk utilities to open?
Second issue, since the HD was replaced here in Italy, everything displayed is in Italian.  is there anyway to change it to english so I can understand what it is telling me? I am wearing out my google translate.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

You could try calling apple, 1-800-275-2273, and see if they'll give you a free Mountain Lion, based on your story.
or call the store in Italy and get their Apple ID. But this probably violates something in the User Agreement.
or you could just cough up 20 bucks and buy it. This much aggravation is worth way more than 20 dollars.
when you install it you can specify English.
after you download ML, but before you install it, make an install flash drive with Lion DiskMaker , so you'll have a copy ready next time this happens.

  • I've been unable to install Arch on my system so far, would like help.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5164 and try as I might, I simply cannot get the Linux on here. Here's the specs:
    Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506)
    System Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
           System Model: Satellite L755D
                   BIOS: InsydeH2O Version CCB.03.61.111.50
Processor: AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~1.5GHz
                 Memory: 6144MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 5606MB RAM
I'm trying this with a USB drive because I've had success with this method in the past, except now.  I've tried using Image Writer, Live Linux USB Creator, Universal USB Installer, UNetBootin, and booting the .iso from RAM to create the USB drive, formatting to FAT32 each time.  None of that has worked.  When I enter the boot menu, this is what I get: http://i.imgur.com/gvzRS.jpg. SanDisk is my USB drive, but it shows up as connected to a floppy disk drive, which my computer does not have.  When I select the FDD option, it loops back the screen where I can select the boot menu or the BIOS menu.  When I select the USB option, which should work, the computer just boots Windows.  I've tried the same methods with Debian, with the same results.  The BIOS is up to date.  Does this mean my computer is forever screwed out of running alternate operating systems?  Help, Linux is so fun.

I wouldn't mind betting that you haven't set up the USB correctly. In particular, it seems a bit odd to me that you would specify FAT32.
Yes, I've tried it on an HP laptop and got to the starting point of installation just fine.  I mentioned the format type because I figured someone would ask me if I had formatted the drive as FAT32.  Figured I'd just cover my bases.

Not at all, just got to work out the kinks.  Have you tried explicitly specifying the boot device with a "Select boot from device" option generally mentioned at boot?
Just to be sure.  When you say USB drive do you mean a USB memory stick or a USB drive enclosure?  Also there are some BIOS that will reset the preferred boot order when a USB device has been removed/inserted prior to boot (compared to the previous boot) so keep that in mind as well.
If you select your boot medium but Windows ends up loading this means the BIOS failed to see where to pass control to on that device specified.  So double check your are actually writing a Master Boot Record (MBR) to the USB device.  The BIOS really isn't all that concerned with what you can or cannot do so long as it finds the next device to take over.
Yep.  In fact, if I rearrange the boot order as:
    1. USB
    2. FDD
    3. HDD
I get stuck in a loop that goes from the "hit F2 to enter setup, F9 to change boot order, etc." screen to a black screen, and then repeats.  I'm talking about a USB flash stick here.  How would I write this MBR to the drive?

  • Updating without plugging into the mains...argh help please?

Hi, I've just installed new software on my iPod Mini and now want to get on with loading more songs onto it. The trouble is, it won't recognise my ipod on itunes until I've plugged my iPod into the mains using the regular charger. I don't have the regular charger on me!! Is there any way to still use my ipod with my pc without connecting to the mains? This is the only chance for me to add more music.
    Please help, thank you lots!!
    Samsung PC   Windows XP

Your other options are to connect it to your PC via 6-Pin powered firewire port if you can... or possibly a car cigarette lighter charger.
At this point, your iPod needs to complete the update process and connecting to an external power source is the only way to complete the process.
