Unable to install OS X on external FWHD

the install dvd will not allow me to install on 500 gb seagate external FWHD.
anyone know why?

What you need to do is to change the partition table style to the GUID Partition Table from whatever it is now. You do this in the Partition Options in Disk Utility.
Intel Macs will only boot off drives with this partition table. PowerPC Macs require the drive to use the Apple Partition Map.

  • How do I install leopard on an external drive

I have been unable to install snow leopard on my external drive, when I put the install disc in the drive on the iMAC, it shows up on the desktop, but i cannot get it to install on the external drive, the iMAC has Lion installed.

I'd like an answer to the original question, too.  I have a brand new Intel iMac which came preloaded with Lion.  I'd like to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive for a variety of reasons.  I would rather NOT erase the internal hard drive of the iMac, if possible.  Of course, I get this same message that, "You cannot install Snow Leopard on this machine running Lion" more or less.  Does anyone have a method of faking out the installer so it will install Snow Leopard onto an external hard drive even though the Mac is running Lion?

  • Unable to install adobe flashplayer on mac 10.9.2

Hi I recently upgraded to 10.9.2 and I am unable to install Adobe Flashplayer on Safari.  I've done an uninstall and downloaded and tried to reinstall but it hangs a little more than halfway.  All I get is an error message saying there's an error - no specifics.
Any help here please?  Thanks in advance!

Are you trying to install this: Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.77?
I would suggest doing the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Try installing Flash again.

  • Unable to install Windows 8 in Boot Camp because of MBR

I just this weekend reformatted my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010, 15", 2.4 gHz i5) and so I had to reinstall Windows 8 with Boot Camp. I had it working fine before, although the lack of drivers made it absolutely terrible (Has Apple released any drivers for it yet?) but the installation went without a hitch.  When I tried to install Windows 8 this time though, it did not work at all. On the OS X side, everything went as expected, and when I went to Windows installation everything worked until I had to select a partition.  I feel like at this point I should point out that I have removed the optical drive from my Mac and have the Optibay in my optical drive bay and have a 128 GB SSD as my main drive and a 512 GB SSD in the optical drive slot, which was where my Bootcamp partition was, around 250 GB.  I was installing Windows 8 using an external enclosure for my Superdrive with the Retail Windows 8 DVD full version.  Anyways, when I went to select the partition, it said that it was unable to install because
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed GPT disks."
I have heard many conflicting resolutions to the problem, I have heard that I need to remove the other drive and install the optical drive and I have heard that this works very well, and many other things, I just want to find the correct solution to this. Thank you! And I hope I provided you with enough information!

I have a cd drive with a bootable windows 7 disc and I already downloaded the drivers needed to a pendrive on MS-DOS Format.
However this devil things asks me for a windows 8 disc.
Many many thanks if someone knows how to do it.

  • Unable to install "InstallESD.dmg" file from OS X Mounstain Lion?

    Hi,
Unable to install "InstallESD.dmg" file from OS X Mounstain Lion, i've downloaded OS X Mavericks and installed on other machine. However, i took backup of "Show Package Contents" before installing. When i try to install ""InstallESD.dmg" file some other Mac machine. When i double click on it its open Packages folder instead of installer.
Please suggest me, how can i install OS X Mavericks for My Mac machines.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Suresh Balakrishnan.

Unfortunately with OS X Mavericks you can't use the InstallESD.dmg file as an installer. You have to use either DiskMaker X 3.0.4 or Mavericks Bootable Disk Creation Tool or do an Internet search for the Terminal command that can be used to create a bootable Mavericks installer on an external drive (e,g, USB thumb drive).
You will need the Install OS X Mavericks.app from the Mac App Store to use with all of the above solutions.

    Hi MF,
I had a problem with changing my default temp folders installing another third party program, not any CR stuff.
I changed my temp folders back to the defaults and then it worked. I tried changing the permissions for all users on c:\temp and c:\tmp but that didn't help either for the other program.
Only way it would work was to use the default temp folder structure.
Try changing yours back to c:\User\appdata\local\temp
Clear the temp folder out first and try again.
Something, not sure if it was Windows or anti-virus or the firewall was blocking access. Odd that it gets part way so likely some third party dependency on that file doesn't like or get to your c:\temp folder.
    Thanks
    Don

  • Unable to install to chosen location???

im installing adobe photoshop (or rather, trying to =/)
im at the part where you select a location to install. my hard drive is too full to install there so i need to install it to removable storage.
im able to install it to my external hard drive but not able to install to my flash drive for some reason.
i have more than enough free space but it still says "unable to install to chosen location"
i need to be able to use photoshop on the go and my hard drive is not compact enough.
it must be on my flash drive.
i have windows XP sp3 and my flash drive is an 8gb sandisk cruzer micro.
any solutions/recommendations would be much appreciated.

8gb hard drive = no more freeing
up space is going to happen without deleting my os.
btw i understand its going to install many things to my hard drive BUT the bulk part of it i need on my flash drive. i dont even plan on trying to run it off my flash drive from other computers because i know that wont work.
all that aside i think i may have found a solution.
i cant just install it to my external hard drive and copy it to my flash drive right? so what im doing is mounting a virtual drive (D:) to my external drive (E:) and installing PS to (D:). now, my flash drive is also assigned the drive name (D:). once its done installing im going to delete virtual (D:) and plug in real (D:) and copy all the files over. since they have the same name it shouldn't have any location problems. and since all the other licenses, regkeys, etc. are on my local disk (C:) everything should work fine!
i know it'll run slow off my flash drive but thats not too much of a problem.
    what do you guys think?

  • Unable to install Mountain Lion because HD is "being used for backups"?

I have been unable to install mountain lion because it is saying that my hard drive is being used for time machine backups. That makes no sense, because I use an external hard drive to backup my computer. I'm not sure why this is happening.

Do you, for some reason, have an item named "Backups.backupdb" on your hard drive? If so, you need to get rid of that in order to install.

Do you have a friend with an Intel Mac. If your MacBook and their Mac have firewire ports you can install by Target Disk Mode. You'll need a retail version of SL to do this with any Mac other than a MacBook.
Start up your friend's Mac with your install disk. After you get to the install screen on your friend's Mac connect your MacBook to your friend's Mac in "Target Mode"with a firewire cable http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Then open "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities Menu" on the Menu Bar from the install disk on your friend's Mac. You should see both your MacBook and your friend's Mac hard drives in there. Erase and partition your MacBook drive and then choose that drive when you go back to the install screen. Or install over your existing OS on your drive if you have applications you want to keep.
The only other way is to buy an external DVD drive on eBay. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=firewire+external+dvd+drive&_sacat=0&LH_BIN=1&_ sop=15&_dmpt=Apple_Laptops&_odkw=usb+external+dvd+drive&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286. c0.m270.l1313 or at MacSales http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
And of course be sure your Macbook meets the system requirements. To upgrade to Snow Leopard or install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
    An Intel processor.
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing.
At least 1 GB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended).
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer.
At least 5 GB of disk space available.

  • Is it possible to boot to a Windows 7 install DVD from an external USB drive on current iMacs?

On the iMac I'm currently using, a mid-2007 24-inch, it's impossible to boot into a Windows install DVD from an external drive: I can hold down option on boot, and all my hard drives come up, but if the Windows disc is in my external DVD drive, it won't show up. I'll soon be upgrading to a late 2012 iMac, and I'd like to be able to install Windows 7 for a boot camp partition. Since that iMac has no built in drive, I'd like to know if using an external DVD drive will work on that model. I'd like to do that, seems easier than messing around with disk images. But we'll see...

You can use an external optical drive to install Windows without any problem with a Late 2012 iMac.
The reason that you couldn't install Windows from an external optical drive on the 2007 iMac is that it has got an internal SuperDrive, so Apple only allows you to use it to install Windows on your iMac
