Unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook

Hi all, new Mac user here.
I had a Macbook 1.83Ghz given to me recently that still has Tiger installed. I upped the RAM to 2GB so I thought I was ready for SL. Everything I've been told and read said it works to go from Tiger to SL if you do it as a clean install but I can't get there. Here's what I've tried:
I'm pretty sure the optical drive is shot so I've been using an external one. With the MB running I install the SL disc. I click on "Install Mac OS X" and get the next window on which the only option is restart. I click on that and the MB restarts. Unfortunately that's all it does. All I get on restart is a gray screen, then the same gray screen with a folder/question mark, then the gray screen again. That's all it does until it eventually starts up on Tiger.
I then tried booting from the disc by holding down the Option key while starting but the OS X disc never comes up as an option. The only thing that comes up as an option that way is the HD.
Does this sound like a hardware problem or is it possible the install disc is bad? I'm completely stumped. I browsed through the forums here and it seems others have had the same issue but I couldn't find any resolutions. One of the threads suggested a Smart utility to check the disk, I ran that and it checks out fine.
Anyone have any ideas?

While I appreciate your legal opinion, you seem to have missed the entire point of the question. Issue spotting, Rule, analysis and conclusion are first year law students tools, but they must read the question carefully. Is there a way to install the disk, assuming the disk is hypothetical. Again, why are you attempting censor my question and digress into a legal argument...that is a rhetorical question, not posting a rehash of your speculative factual assertion will will be **** decent of you. Some of us just love knowledge, and would never consider actually crossing over to the dark side, more like turning a light on to look around. Good day sir.
You're right, we're not breaking any law discussing it online. But even if you could use your iMac disc to install SL on your MacBook (which, like stedman1 said, cannot be done) it would technically be breaking the law, and for someone who loves knowledge, you should be open to hearing that, even if you did already know.
I didn't come here for an argument. I gave you the answer and you chose to deny it for whatever reason. Heck, go download Snow Leopard from somewhere for all I care, it's your choice, and I'm not going to judge you on it, but your iMac disc simply will not work. That's what I was trying to get across in my very first post. You'll need a copy that is designed to work with your MacBook.

  • I am unable to install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro

    Hi
I am unable to update to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro. I have 2 GB of RAM. When I boot from the install disc I get an error message that this OS cannot be installed on this machine. Sorry, I don't have the error verbatim.
Am I missing something in the system requirements?
Is there another OS I need to install prior to installing SL?
    Thanks
    Andrew

Not impossible, but not likely, either.
I don't know why people keep telling me that what I saw couldn't have happened or is very unlikely. Whatever.
There are not many third party applications that can interfere with this, although maybe there are a few hacks & system 'enhancers' that could.
Little Snitch is not something that most people would call a "hack", and lots of people use it. I meant to quit it, and any other third-party background processes, but forgot. Shortly after I started the Snow Leopard installation, I _saw it block a connection attempt_ by the installer. I allowed the connection, but nonetheless something went wrong. When everything completed and my machine restarted, I still had 10.5.8... absolutely nothing had changed. (I'm not complaining about the "nothing changed" part... I could have ended up with a destroyed system and I didn't.)
I rebooted from the SL disk, repeated the installation and everything went fine.
Moral of the story? Do your system installs in the most controlled environment possible, which means rebooting from the disk.

  • Can't erase and install SNow Leopard on old MacBook Pro

I am trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro3,1. I boot up with the installation disc, get to pick a language but then a window pops up that says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer" and gives me the options to Restore from Backup or Restart.
I had upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on this machine which I used for months, but it is currently running off the hard drive of a new MacBook Pro that got fried. The installation disk I am using is the one I got with that unfortunate machine. Could this be the problem?
    Any other suggestions?
    Other info: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (108504)
Other History: The machine I am trying to erase and install on recently had its logic board replaced under warranty because of the NVIDIA graphics card issue. I have not found the service centre in South Africa to be very trustworthy, in fact the first time they claimed to have replaced the logic board, the computer (which had been intermittently failing to boot up) immediately started displaying the same problems. Another mac shop said to me that the "new" logic board looked so dusty that it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been replaced a week prior. Anyway, it has ostensibly been replaced again, along with a faulty superdrive.
When it went back to the service centre, they put in the hard drive of another, new, MacBook Pro of mine that got fried in an unrelated incident
Please help! I want to give this machine to an employee but
    a) want to make sure it's stable and functioning properly, and
    b) want to give it a clean slate with my personal data and settings erased.

You need a retail Snow Leopard installation disk. Available for $29 USD. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL
Once you install it onto the old machine, you can use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff and apps from the other machine.

to boot from your original grey Mac OS X Install DVD, you’ll need to hold down the C key as you start up your MacBook Pro.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of Mac OS is noted as being on your grey installation DVD? (It can be found on the lower left of your Mac OS X Install DVD.)

im trying to instal snow leopard on my macbook. its running tiger 10.4.11 and it meets all the requirements  but it ask me for a restart to begin instalation progres, i restar it and it doesn't happen anything. anyone can help me?

I assume the restart was prompted during the installation process?
First of all, that restart will take several minutes while files are moved into place and should not be interrupted.
If it fails, or you have interrupted the process, you'll need to boot from the installer (hold down the C key on startup) and use Disk Utility to erase the drive prior to continuing the installation.
That will wipe all data on the drive, though, so if you didn't make a backup before beginning the upgrade, you'll need to get your data off safely before proceeding. That may likely require the use of another Mac to access yours in Target Disc Mode.

I installed Snow Leopard on my Macbook. It said the install completed perfectly, but now it won't finish booting up.
It just sits on the start-up window with the spinning wheel and the apple logo. I can't even eject the install disk or anything. I waited for 7 hours before giving up and just turning it off. I can't bring up any options or anything... am I done for?

  • Installing Snow Leopard on a MacBook that is currently running Tiger

Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook that is currently running Tiger? I have heard rumors that Leopard must be installed before Snow Leopard will work. I bought a white MacBook about three and a half years ago with Tiger installed.

    1. The Snow Leopard installer itself runs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step on the volume selected for the install, so while this remains a good idea when upgrading to Leopard or other previous OS versions, doing it as a separate pre-install step is not necessary or likely to improve anything when upgrading to Snow Leopard.
In this respect the installer is quite finicky: if the volume doesn't pass verification, it will refuse to begin the install.
    2. Aside from that, the installer is only finicky about two other things regarding format: (a) the drive must be formatted with the GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition scheme (the scheme the drives of all Intel Macs ship with) & (b) the table must conform to the standard GPT format. If the drive doesn't meet these criteria, the installer marks any volumes on it as not suitable for the install & users can't select them.
    3. Some users seem unaware of just how different the Snow Leopard installer is from the earlier ones. When Apple talks about streamlining it in the product's blurb, it refers to much more than just eliminating the old Archive & Install and Erase & Install options, notably:
    • Unlike the old Upgrade option, SL's version completely replaces the existing OS component files with the ones from the installer's 'payload.' (The old Upgrade option just replaced or patched components that had been changed for that OS version.) This is why the single provided option is equally suitable for a volume that contains an existing OS or an empty one. (It's also why upgrading from Leopard or Tiger works essentially the same way.)
    • The new installer doesn't create a "Previous Systems" folder like the old Archive & Install did. There is no reason for this largely redundant folder anymore, since the new installer selectively leaves in place user-added items from the old system folders that they previously had to move back into those folders manually if they wanted to restore their functionality. However, if the "Previous Systems" folder exists because a user did an A&I with an older OS installer, the new one leaves it in place. But since the new OS ignores it, just as previous ones did, this has no effect on OS operation.
    • If -- but only if -- users start the install process by launching the "Install Mac OS X" pre-install application while running from an installed OS, that app will use the installed OS's network settings to 'phone home' to Apple's database of software known to be incompatible with Snow Leopard & use that info to decide what if anything to move to a root level "Incompatible Software" folder during the install. The DVD has its own short list, but since that list was created before the DVD was made, it is now out-of-date & incomplete. Thus, it is always a good idea to start the install this way when possible, just as Apple recommends.
    • Other minor refinements that only work if there is an existing OS include automatically deciding if Rosetta or Quicktime Player 7 should be installed, automatic language selection for the install process, & enabling the 'install drivers only for local & nearby printers' option. Each of these depends in some way on what's already installed.
    4. All these refinements do not make the new installer 100% reliable but they eliminate the most common problems users had with the older ones, especially if they follow Apple's instructions & *do not* erase the drive beforehand. Just as the Installation Guide included on the disc (also available online here) says in the "Advice about installing" section, erasing the drive should be reserved for the rare times when the normal method fails.

  • I am having trouble installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook -it just quits midway through.  I have one GB of memory which I think should be enough. Any advice

I am having trouble installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook.  It's around 4 years old and has 1GB Memory.  The installation just quits around 20 minutes into the process without any error message. My current OS is Leopard.

but it didn't have Mac OS installed, the previous owner was a Windows 7 user, so that was the only OS installed in my Mac.
The previous owner should have given you the discs that originally came with the computer.
Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html

  • Can I install Snow Leopard from my MacBook?

I've got two computers, an IMac (Dual Core, around 4 year old) with Leopard and a MacBook Pro (less than 2 years old) with Snow Leopard. I will be buying a new IMac in a few months but in the meanwhile I was wondering if I could install Snow Leopard from the MacBook Pro to avoid all the incompatibility issues that are starting to surface.
I'm not upgrading my MacBook to Montain Lion because I don't want to miss the chance of updaiting my old IMac (surely it won't be compatible with Montain Lion).
    Thanks!

You should be able to use the MBP's install disc to update the iMac. Give it a shot and let us know. Do know that Lion and ML will render all of your PPC apps useless, so consider whether or not a new machine is a smart move.

  • Problem installating Snow Leopard on old Macbook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo. After creating partition on internal hard disk (Extended Journaled), installation starts but stops at half of the progress bar. Screen asking Restart appears.

    Hello:
I have tried installing Snow Leopard via the installation disc on a Macbook Pro (2007) with an Intel Core 2 Duo, but I the installation has failed more than 5 times.
I have first formatted and partitioned the internal hard disk with Mac Os Extended Journal format.
Once the installation starts, it starts without a problem unti lthe progress bar gest until half completed then a screen asking for a Computer Restart shows up.
It asks to press the power button for some time until it the computer shuts down and then, press again to turn it on.
Once turned on, the installation disc gets readed, the installation screen appears again and asks again to start the whole installation process form the beginning.

Then you have a Hardware Problem.
Your system is Crashing part way through the install and Re-Booting because of the crash.
Could be the drive itself or it could be some other hardware part in your system. Like the RAM.
To check if it is the internal drive connect an External drive to the system by USB and do the install on that external. If the install completes then it more then likely the drive is bad. If it crashes again then it is more then likely some other piece of hardware in your system.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on a MacBook

    Hi guys...
A friend of mine brought me his Macbook to fix it because the hard drive was making sounds and now won't boot.
The drive in fact is bad, it barely mount, makes noises, etc.
I've replaced the internal hard drive for a Toshiba 320gb SATA 3.
The thing is that apparently the DVD doesn't recognize my drive and of course, i can't install Snow Leopard.
My question is, is this a problem with the new drive?. I believe that being a SATA3 could be causing the problem.
Second question... Can i install Snow Leopard (somehow) using my Mac mini?
Thanks so much and i hope you can help me.
    Regards.
    Francisco.

    Hi!!
    >I've used another internal hard drive and installs correctly<
    Using the DVD installer?
    Yes
So it boots with another hard drive in there but ejects when you put the Toshiba in there?
Yes but it only make sense if the DVD would create a temporary partition or something in order to install the OS.
    >Could it be that the drive is SATA3? <
Even so it would be downwards compatible.
    I though so too
    >or maybe the hd is bad?<
    That would make more sense.
I'm going to clone the installation that went OK in order to see if it's actually my internal drive the problem.
    Could it be the manufacturer?
Thanks so much and i'll let you know.
    Regards.
    Francisco.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro currently running Lion?

A friend is having trouble running older apps in Lion on his new Macbook Pro and wants to revert to Snow Leopard. Any suggestions or cautionary tales appreciated. Thanks.

New MBPs require a version of Snow Leopard that you cannot purchase. If it did not come pre-installed on the computer then installing Snow Leopard is a bit of a chore.
First off he will need a computer that can boot from a retail Snow Leopard DVD (10.6.3.) Second off he will need a 16 GB USB flash drive or a free partition on a USB hard drive that is at least 16 GBs in size. The basic process is:
Using a computer that can boot from a retail Snow Leopard DVD you install 10.6.3 onto the spare drive. Download and install the 10.6.8 Combo update. Create a new partition on the MBP. Boot the MBP from the 10.6.8 USB drive then clone the system to the new partition on the MBP.
I will be glad to provide more detail if needed.

  • DON'T Install Snow Leopard on early MacBook Pro with Firmware password on!!

I'm going to summarize my postings from yesterday because I don't want anyone wasting their night like I did.
Many of us who upgraded from Tiger created a Firmware password to ensure that people won't be able to wipe and re-install the HD for sale if the computer gets stolen. I also note that, like me, many have been suffering the recent won't wake from sleep issues that make it feel like the HD is dead. Sometimes it starts from sleep, mostly it's a real hassle to get it to wake up and when it does it's generally in safe sleep mode. I managed to find a "halfway" good fix for that issue by changing the sleep mode from 0 to 3 in the terminal, found a useful script by Googling the problem. Fixes 90% of my issues on that score. But I wanted to install Snow Leopard to "hopefully" fix that issue for good.
HOWEVER, if you have a MacBook Pro 2006-2007 model and the original install disc is still Tiger, WARNING TURN OFF THE FIRMWARE PASSWORD if you created one before you attempt an install. Otherwise you'll be completely stuck in black screen **** and you cannot restart from the Snow Leopard disc once you have it in, neither can you eject it because you never get that far.
The computer, after installing Snow Leopard just gets stuck on the grey screen for a while and then goes black. The computer will not boot from the Snow Leopard disc, Techtool Protege or Leopard disc and the BIGGEST PROBLEM is; you can't Zap the PRAM with firmware active to try and continue installation as some other posters have suggested. Basically, you're screwed.
To get the Snow Leopard disc out I rebooted in Windows and ejected the disc, then put in first the Leopard disc... didn't work... then rebooted, ejected and put in the original installation disc with Tiger, that did work but no firmware password reset!!!
The only solution was for me to wipe the disc, reinstall Tiger from the original install disc, which was the only one that worked. Once I could restart the computer again in Tiger, I was finally able to reboot from the Leopard disc and disable the firmware password.
Then I restarted, zapped the PRAM and using the Leopard disc, restored my machine to its former self with my Time Machine back up. Ran Techtool Pro 5 to fix permissions and rebuild volumes etc. and now have it working again.
I think I'll leave Snow Leopard for a while since I don't know whether the zapping PRAM works during install and frankly, don't have the time to go through this entire debilitating process again. If anyone does manage to get things running on the earlier MacBook Pros please let me know how it went!
Anyway, just thought I'd give people a heads up on the Firmware password thing... it's really a bugger on the older models because it wasn't originally included on the original install disc leaving you with no options!!

Sorry, just wnated to post a comment not question, wasn't sure how to mark it!

  • How do I install Snow Leopard on a Macbook with a cracked screen?

I've been successfully using my 4 year old Macbook with an external monitor. Now that I'm trying to instal Snow Leopard when it gets to the first instal screen after I restart it, it will only show extended display, not mirror display. Nothing happens when I press f7 to try to get it to mirror display.

In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the monitor and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.

  • Unable to install Snow Leopard

I hope one of you has a solution for this strange problem. First off, this is for installation on a Macbook Pro Core Duo 1.83 with 2 GB RAM and 120 GB HD.
    _The Problem_
I can install and update Leopard no problem on this machine. However, when I try to install snow leopard the installation will never finish. I do not receive a message, the computer just suddenly shuts down. Now, I know some people have had the problem that the screen just kind of dims and the machine seems like it's off, but it is definitely off.
    I have ruled out:
Disk Drive: I thought it was the disk drive but I get the same issue installing from an external.
    RAM: Tried known-to-be-good RAM. Nothing
Hard Drive. I installed SN on this hard drive once by putting it into an external drive. It ran fine.
    Additional info:
When I installed SL on the HD in an external, I had no problems. I ran it through a different computer, however. But when I put that HD into the computer it would not complete updates. I was running 10.6.2 and tried to update to 10.6.4 but it would shut down during the update. Snow Leopard did run fine otherwise and had no problems installing iLife.
I should also add that this is not the first time I had SL on the machine. It was my regular machine before I got the computer in my sig. When I installed SL then, I had the same problem but was able to install it by running the disk from my iMac (which I no longer have) with the computer in target disk mode.
Could it be the disk? I've tried it on other computers to test it out and it works ok. I just can't work out why Snow Leopard is causing such problems for this machine.

Sorry about that. I clarified a bit further in the post. When I installed it and ran it through an external HD that was on a different computer. I don't know why I didn't run it through the laptop. Bit sloppy of me. I think at the time I thought that the problem was with the HD. Now I'm just puzzled. After spending the day trying to get SL installed, I just installed Leopard, ran the updates, and everything is fine. Is is possible that this is a bum disk? I installs ok on other computers...
I just wanted to add that I appreciate your help!
