Unable to install Solaris 10 on Dell PowerEdge 2850

The Kernel boots from CD without any problem but the "configuring devices" stage lasts very long without any progress/success.
The following messages appear, and the install seems to hang at this point:
Attempting to configure interface e1000g1
Skipping interface e1000g1
Attempting to configure interface e1000g0
Skipping interface e1000g0
This is a PowerEdge 2850, no RAID, three 73Gb drives, 2x3.4 GHz processors, 4 GB mem.
Attempted to install Solaris 8 and 9 and no success with either.
Please help.
thanks.

Hello,
I had a similar problem with an install on Dell. It appears it comes from the screen and/or video configuration detected by the installer. The installer try to test the screen conf and freezes.
To resolve, i had to choose the #4 option installation (console only).
When Solaris installation asks for validating the screen conf. press Esc and Continue (F2 ...) then choose BYPASS (F4) the test configuration.
You have to do the same with the CD 2 because the installer detect you did not validate the configuration before. At this step, press F5 to bypass again.
After that, all works well.
Hope this help you.

  • Problems installing Solaris 10 rel. 1/06 on Dell PowerEdge 2850

    Hello,
Tried to install - Solaris does say "No disks".
Wanted to use Sun's driver for LSI PERC 4e/Di RAID contoller which is onboard, so I made the diskette according to instructions. The driver is for Solaris 10 3/05 and there seems to be no new one for 1/06 release.
Used option 5 in the menu [Apply driver updates].
It read the floppy, then went successfully thru the questions stage and then displayed a dialog box saying that there are no disks. Disks are there (2X73GB) as RAID 1 and visible to BIOS.
Tried to specify boot option "acpi-user-options=2" in the GRUB. Then it fails to mount the floppy drive which is the only way to add the ITU driver.
    Please, help.
    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I knew this was going to happen...
    This is bug 6312400:
Synopsis: ps/2 floppy is not enumerated when acpi is disabled or not supported
    http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6 312400
Unfortunatelly, there's no fix available at this time for bug 6312400, neither
in Solaris Express, nor in Solaris 10 u1.

    </td></tr></table>
Unless this is changed between OpenSolaris / Solaris Express / Solaris Nevada and Solaris 10 Update 1, it is possible to add (one &#91;*&#93;) ITU driver
    from an optical media.
Now all you have to do is figure out how to convert the ITU floppy to an
    ITU CD-{R,RW}.
Have a look at the "build" script, function "make_itu_cd_image()"
    contained here: http://www.tools.de/solaris/itu/
It builds an ITU CD ISO9660 image with RockRidge, using mkisofs.

I just did this on an 1850 with raid.
Theres a post from me on this forum about it,

should do the trick until they fix their pilot error.

    Hi:
Im installing Solaris 10 X86 in a PowerEdge 2850, after I changed ACPI and put 119376 -01 patch, now i can see disks but when the instalation begin it go until 15% and doesnt follow with it and doesnt show any messages .
I have a perc 4e/di Raid Controler and 3 hard disk off 73 Gb
    Thanks for Advance.

Solaris 10 does not play well with certain raid controllers shipping on the Dell 2850s.
    See http://forum.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=23549
You may want to look at the HCL entry for the 2850
    From http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/sol/systems/details/806.html
    Stephan Sachweh writes,
If you have a DRAC4/I board inside you should upgrade the firmware to v1.20 and disable the VIRTUALCDROM and VIRTUALFLOPPY while installing Solaris.
Also you need a patch for big drives if you have 73GB Seagate harddisks.
In your Solaris 10 boot floppy, edit Solaris/bootenv.rc, append this line to the end of this file: setprop acpi-user-options 0x4 ---

  • Solaris 8 & Dell PowerEdge 6300

This message goes to Sun Microsystem.
I work for a Small School District which is 98% Windows NT.
For more than a year I've been looking for ways to introduce a UNIX/LINUX Solution into our network.
Finally, the best opportunity arrives: We need to set up a Spam Filter for our Mail system.
The target machine is a Dell PowerEdge 6300 Dual 550mhz CPU, gig of RAM, SCSI Raid.
The School was even good enough to send me to a Solaris Admin class just to help out with the integration.
Everything is good except Device Configuration won't recognize the AMI MegaRaid Ultra SCSI contoller.
Hence the install won't find the Hard Disks.
Dell Support was good, but the couldn't help, as their testing for Solaris is a bit on the slow side.
They said SUN would have to have the final say.
So after looking through the SUN website; at all the HCLs I come to the conclusion, (note this Spam filter project must go forward soon) That:
    1. It will install if there is a Driver, (Dell didn't have it, AMI didn't, I don't, perhaps SUN does?)
    2. It will install if I get a different Raid Controller( unlikely as the only reason for considering UNIX in the first place is cost, and I've already got a Microsoft solution lined up for less than a good conrtoller)
    3. It's not going to work, because the hardware on this Server is just not supported.
And I call SUN. Now given that SUN and all the UNIX / Linux crowd are always griping about how they are better, and how they need a piece of the Microsoft pie, and thet fact that many many times I've gotten Microsoft to help out without charge, I would've thought that SUN might be at least remotely helpful given the chance they had someone willing to start pushing them in the door, or at least they might care about Education.
But No. No way, no how. Not even maybe or anything.
Thanks a lot guys for nothing.
You assholes don't deserve a market share, and until you start either making your shit work, or at least being more helpful to those who would push your products you'll never get anywhere.
Fuck SUN Microsystems You're a bunch of good for nothing Dickwits...
    KSchwantz

How is it the fault of Sun Microsystems that AMI will not provide a Solaris x86 driver for their RAID controller? Do you think Sun would not jump for joy if hardware manufacturers would provide drivers for an operating system other than Windoze whatever?
Sun is stuck in a chicken/egg situation in this case. The hardware manufacturer will not provide a driver for such a low volume product as Solaris x86, and people cannot use Solaris x86 on much current hardware due to the lack of drivers. I imagine AMI has limited resources availble for driver developement, and wants to spend its development dollars on the platform that will generate the most revenue.
Of course Sun could pay AMI to produce such a driver, or for the specifications so they could write their own, but then the price of Solaris x86 would have to be increased to offset the increased production cost. This would seem to just push people to use linux or one of the BSD variants. Any ideas on how to resolve this conundrum?
Now that I'm done ranting, maybe this info will actually help you. AFAICT, megaraid is the name of a product line, not for a specific card. If you could provide more detailed info about the specific AMI HBA that you have, someone might be able to provide more detailed info to you. Some locations that appear to have some form of AMI megaraid drivers:

  • Unable to install MAX on Dell Latitude D600 notebook

I am trying to install NI-DAQ 6.9.2 on a Dell Latitude D600 notebook running Windows XP SP1. I have full local administrator privileges for this PC.
The notebook will be used to develop software for a test rig, but the rig will actually use a desktop PC fitted with a PCI-1200 card (so I cannot try NI-DAQ 7.1 as this does not support the PCI-1200 card).
Notebook specification is as follows :
    1.4GHz Pentium M CPU, 512Mb RAM, 3Gb free disk space, anti-virus disabled.
    Start NI-DAQ 6.9.2 setup.
    Selected the following features :
    NI-DAQ 6.9.2 Device Driver (default)
    NI-DAQ OPC Server (default)
    Microsoft Visual Basic Support
    NI-DAQ appeared to install OK.
    Re-booted without any DAQ device.
    NI-DA
Q documentation installation started and completed OK.
Configure Measurement and Automation System (MAX) started.
Always get error message "Unable to open a connection to the server..." (see attached file)
Unable to rename or delete the "config.mxs" file (as suggested in the error dialog) - Windows always reports "Access is denied", even immediately after re-booting.
Tried installing a PCMCIA DAQCard-700 then running MAX setup, got same error message. (Windows recognised the DAQCard-700 OK, listed in "device manager" as "working correctly").
Tried version 6.9.3 of NI-DAQ, but still unable to install MAX.
Please tell me how to get MAX to install under Windows XP SP1 !!

From your post I do not believe the CD drive is at fault. I believe the machine you wrote the CD is at fault. I would create another set of bootable CD's using a different machine with a CD-R/W drive. I would write the CD at 4 speed and try again. Some Ultra 10's have the slower 4 speed CD drive. What OBP is telling you is the CD appears to be 'blank' or 'corrupted', that's the cause for the 'bad magic number' error. If you can find a bootable Solaris Installation CD I'm sure it would boot just fine. Another thing you might look at, I've seen this be a problem with CD's, is the recordable surface. Are there any finger prints, smears etc? If so, clean the record surface then try booting the Ultra 10 again.

  • Unable to install Solaris 10 for intel on IDE hard disk?

I was trying to install solaris on an 80 GB IDE HDD with

drive with the first/second solaris os install CD.

Does solaris install on IDE hard disks on intel 32 bit PCs?

Sometimes it's possible to use drivers for older Solaris x86 systems
to install the latest Solaris x86 release.
    http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/family/model/2543.html?submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us
To do that, you have to modify HP's ITU floppy. For Solaris 10 x86,
rename the DU/sol_2X directory on HP's floppy to DU/sol_210 .

Are you sure your CD is valid? (Is it a real CD or USB key?). Are booting in BIOS or in UEFI mode? If it is UEFI, disable secure boot in the firmware. How have you created your CD? If you simply copy all the files, I think it will boot in UEFI mode, because the firmware looks for a file; but not in BIOS mode, where you have to burn the raw image. If you have still some problems, be sure to describe the problem and what you have done in details.

Anyone seen this before and what does it mean. Does the installation process not like the fact that I have a NTFS partition on the first disk.

there is a german article how to fix the bios on that hba:

only problem is one needs the seeprom dumped from a non-dell card of that type. after that it is possible to flash the adaptec firmware. so if anyone has a 39320 hba and is willing to dump the seeprom using the scsiutil.exe that would help very much...

    Hello,
You need to rename the 3 large files with an .iso extension to the end after you unzip them. For example, rename the first file from sol-8-1_01-install-fcs-bin-ia-ml to sol-8-1_01-install-fcs-bin-ia-ml.zip. Then you need to use EZ CD Creator to create a CD from an image file.
