Hello!
There is one simple method also..
Instead of Installation disk of Solaris, insert the Software 1/2 Disk, and try to follow the actuall Suninstall method of installing Solaris. Here you will get the option that how to utilize the free space.
I myself have installed more 5 OS on a single Hard disk :) this way. Try this method

  • Installing Solaris 10 via external CD drive on Dell Latitude D800 Laptop

Hello all, I am trying to install Solaris 10 via external CD drive on Dell Latitude D800 Laptop. After the GRUB menu it begins to load, displaying the " . . . . . ." and hangs about 1/4 way accross the screen. When attempting the install from a DVD instead of a CD the installation hangs on the same screen even sooner. Has anyone encoutered this problem?

    Hello Alex,
no, you can't use USB devices on SPARC as boot device.
The OBP (even updated ones) contains only support for the USB keyboard, but none for USB mass storage (which requires a device driver). The integrated USB ports are for slow devices like keyboard and mouse.
Using an external SCSI DVD-ROM works. Another choice is an installation via network.

  • Unable to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp on MBP mid-2012

Posted here from my original, since the old one was basically in the wrong thread.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/25097756#25097756
I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13" with the 2.9ghz i7 configuration, 8gb ram, intel HD 4000, Crucial M4 256gb SSD, and the original 750gb hard drive that was included in the computer.  I made the SSD my boot disk.
I've been trying to install Windows 7 via bootcamp for a few days now.  The first time I tried it I walked away from the computer after it got to the "Copying files" part of the windows 7 installation so I wasn't able to see what went wrong.  When I try to start the computer it goes to the blank DOS screen (or terminal, whatever you prefer to call it) with the flashing cursor for text but I cannot enter anything and it just sits there.  So I figured something may have gone wrong with the installation and I tried to do it again.
I re-wiped my 8gb flash drive, redownloaded the boot camp support files, and again started the installation with windows 7.  The first time I tried it I had to reformat the "BOOTCAMP" partition that it had created on my SSD because it wouldn't write to it as it was not formated in NTFS.  I spared 60gb for the Windows boot.  So after reformatting I went through with the installation again.  Now I get to the screen where it asks me what username, etc.  After I finish entering in my credentials it starts to say "preparing desktop" and then I hear a loud CLICK and the entire machine just reboots and takes me back to the blinking cursor.  Is this a common problem when trying to install windows? Thanks!

Have you modified BC Info.plist? Can you verify that you a valid ISO using Microsoft FCIV tool?
Your Windows 7 USB should have a directory structure similar to the following.

    1. Stop+A to stop the current boot process.(Already SPARC 8 is installed)
    2. AT OK prompt typed boot cdrom
    3. After some time (3-5 min) prompting error

Checked in few blogs and burnt another DVD with less writing speed, still same error.
Checked with Sparc 8 CD's, Sparc 5.8 installing without any errors.

... (300 MGz / 256 MB RAM / ) ...I suggest you forget about trying Solaris 10 on a system with such limited resources.
If I recall correctly, Solaris 10 needs a minimum of 768MB of RAM to install and 1GB or more of RAM to run, even if you had a cpu that was fast enough to run anything.
    Perhaps consider it this way:
Would you even dream of trying to install MS Windows 7 on a Pentium-I at 300MHz?
Stay with your Solaris 8. It's from the same late 1990's era as that hardware and fits it just right.

  • Linux guy wants to install solaris 10 via nfs using centos as nfs server

well in linux when installing this way I simply copy the dvd install image to an nfs share (or do mount -o loop "isoimage" /nfsmountdir), copy the boot.iso so a cdrom and do a "linux askmethod" during install and then specify the nfs server and dir.
I want to learn sun and want to start by really understanding the install and how to set up slices etc. I would really like to do this using nfs using my centos box as the server as this method at least when installing linux is much mush faster.
so can I do this and if so what are the commands. I did see some documentation but it was for installing from a sun nfs server. but I need to install from the centos as the server. I already have the iso's for the 5 cdroms as well as the dvd image. if possible I would obviously like to use the dvd image.
thanks and remember I am a sun newbie (just bought my first solaris book this week so the more dummied down answer would be the best one for me). if it can be done could you give me the exact process.
    thanks a million (and one).

The Sun network installer scripts only work on Solaris. So there's no instructions from Sun for configuring the daemons on Linux necessary to do the configuration.
There are some guides on the net, but I don't know of one that tells the whole story.
You might consider installing Solaris in a VM on the linux box, then configuring jumpstart on that. You could then see how the daemons on it are configured and replicate that configuration on the Linux machine.

From your post I do not believe the CD drive is at fault. I believe the machine you wrote the CD is at fault. I would create another set of bootable CD's using a different machine with a CD-R/W drive. I would write the CD at 4 speed and try again. Some Ultra 10's have the slower 4 speed CD drive. What OBP is telling you is the CD appears to be 'blank' or 'corrupted', that's the cause for the 'bad magic number' error. If you can find a bootable Solaris Installation CD I'm sure it would boot just fine. Another thing you might look at, I've seen this be a problem with CD's, is the recordable surface. Are there any finger prints, smears etc? If so, clean the record surface then try booting the Ultra 10 again.

  • Unable to install Solaris 10 on Dell PowerEdge 2850

The Kernel boots from CD without any problem but the "configuring devices" stage lasts very long without any progress/success.
The following messages appear, and the install seems to hang at this point:
    Attempting to configure interface e1000g1
    Skipping interface e1000g1
    Attempting to configure interface e1000g0
    Skipping interface e1000g0
This is a PowerEdge 2850, no RAID, three 73Gb drives, 2x3.4 GHz processors, 4 GB mem.
Attempted to install Solaris 8 and 9 and no success with either.
    Please help.
    thanks.

    Hello,
I had a similar problem with an install on Dell. It appears it comes from the screen and/or video configuration detected by the installer. The installer try to test the screen conf and freezes.
To resolve, i had to choose the #4 option installation (console only).
When Solaris installation asks for validating the screen conf. press Esc and Continue (F2 ...) then choose BYPASS (F4) the test configuration.
You have to do the same with the CD 2 because the installer detect you did not validate the configuration before. At this step, press F5 to bypass again.
    After that, all works well.
    Hope this help you.

  • Unable to install Solaris 10 for intel on IDE hard disk?

BUT after 2nd CD , i got the message 'Short Read/Read Error'
after the GRUB boot loader screen.
Repeated after formatting disk using Red Hat linux (linux installed successfully on same disk/machine without problems) but even then
when i retried installing solaris 10, it failed with same error.
Same set of CDs installed successfully on intel xeon server with

Does solaris install on IDE hard disks on intel 32 bit PCs?

Sometimes it's possible to use drivers for older Solaris x86 systems
to install the latest Solaris x86 release.
    http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/family/model/2543.html?submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us
To do that, you have to modify HP's ITU floppy. For Solaris 10 x86,
rename the DU/sol_2X directory on HP's floppy to DU/sol_210 .

It can be done but the biggest stump is the network interface. I've an Acer 350 series with a built-in NIC. I also use XFree86 because the Xsun doesn't recognize the video card. The biggest problem in getting Solaris x86 working is getting the network interface to work, since the PCMCIA support is horrible. You need to be sure the the components on your laptop conform to the HCL. As for X, just use XFree86.
