Unable to install WIndows98SE/Me in Neo LSR?
Hi to everybody. I have a very strange problem. Perhaps you can help me.
I never tested my Neo 875P with Windows 98 SE or ME. I have installed Debian 3.0 sarge (the testing version) with kernel 2.6.3 and Windows XP SP1, without problems. I used to had a Windows 2000 Server for testing purposes, without any problem.
Yesterday, I tried to install Windows 98 SE. I did this some months ago, but didn't work because the mobo had 1GB of memory (M$ recognizes Win9x and Me can't run with more than 768MB of memory). I thought it was the reason and give up. But, today, I have 512MB of memory, and when I try to install Win98SE doesn't recognize ANYTHING (including chipset). There is a big yellow warning in the ACPI part and, whe I double-clic it, the dialog says the ACPI driver can't be started because "the system says it has two ACPI buses, so try upgrading the BIOS" I have AMI 2.0.
I think the BIOS isn't the reason, but Win98SE. Probably the ACPI implementation in Win98SE is too old for understand the new ACPI version.
I tried WinME, but the effects is worst: it didn't make it after the second reboot.
Do you know the reason? Thanks in advance.
My system:
875P Neo-LSR, P4-2,40cGHz running at 3,12GHz (260MHz × 12)
512MB RAM in Wintec DDR333 (running at 173/346MHz)
BIOS 2.0

For the 865 boards:
Q:Can i use more than 512MB memory on Win9X or WinME?
A: No, you can't. You can only use more than 512MB memory on W2000 or WinXP.
Maybe its the same problem for the 875 boards.
Wrong you can use, (and tested upto 1.5Gb mem with Win 98Se or ME).
15. Win9x “Out of Memory” error using 512MB and over
Win9X can use up to 2 gigs RAM memory but you will have to edit the system.ini file by adding MaxFileCache=256000 to fix the out of memory bug.
Click Start > Run type Sysedit.
Click the sysedit.ini tab scroll to the [vcache] section, if the section isn’t there, add it.
Add MaxFileCache followed by =25600 with no spaces so that it looks like this: MaxFileCache=256000.
Also, check link: http://www.abxzone.com/forums/showthread/t-43835.html
The other thing, with Win98 not loading/installing. The proper way is to build system with Fat16 or 32 OS first and then place NTFS OS on for dual/multi boot.
I'm sure this will help.

MSI 875P Neo LSR Dead??
Hi y'all,
Saturday 12th of juli I've bought some components:
- Intel P4 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB
- MSI 875P Neo LSR
- 2*512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200 CL2
- Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro
- Iiyama Vision Master Pro 413
After installing the whole bunch, I tried to boot the system but nothing happend!
So I waited for about 5 min. and booted again. This time almost succesfull but..... the only parts that were working are my fans (casefans, cpu-fan and the Northbridge-fan).
The powerswitch wasn't working (and it was installed correctly). I had to power the system via the powerswitch on my powersupply. So my guess was that my mobo was dead!
After returning the mobo back to my retailler, they concluded that it was dead indeed, so the gave me another mobo.
So after installing the new board, I tried to boot again, but still no succes so far.
My retailer tested the board again and it was also dead.
Some symptoms:
- Active fans
- No HDD, floppy and DVD-player/Burner activity
- Blank screen (display in standby)
- Instant power on when I turn the switch on on my powersupply
I've tried different videocards, memory modules and clearing the C-MOS, bur nothing seems to help ;(
Can you please help me out????
Thanks
Best regards,
ArjanWith regard to the motherboard stand-offs, motherboards dont always use the same amount or in the same position (the stand-offs are movable -either bending out of brackets in the case or unscrewing)
Always check ALL the standoffs line-up with screw positions for your moterboard before fitting, a wrongly positioned post can short-out PCB traces/pins
Another easily overlooked item is the square 4 pin 12v connector (older type power supplys dont even have one), the 12v power connector is located by the northbrige/AGP socket (the CPU will not start without this fitted)
Sometimes when physicaly altering a computer the reset or power-on (start) switchs dont line up correctly with their buttons -this can cause the switch to be permanently "on"
The power-on switch will cause the computer to "cycle" (constant restarting) and the reset switch will cause the computer to hang with-out initialising -try removing the reset switch connector from the motherboard
If none of those are the problem i would suggest trying a different power supply -or maybe your dealer could check the one you are using at the moment -
I have a MSI 875P Neo-LSR. I installed Windows XP sp1 and everything in my computer. All of a sudden it doesn't recognize my CD-ROM Drive. It doesn't let me eject the drive. I see the CD-ROM Drive in the bios, but not in Windows. What could be wrong? I also have the keyboard controller light in the USB indicator bracket light up sometimes I reboot the computer and it locks up.
Motherboard: MSI 875P Neo-LSR
Memory: 1GB Corsair DDR-400 Dual Channel
Video Card: ATI 9700 Pro 128MB
PSU: Antec TRUE550 550watts
AMI® BIOS: 1.3Goto safe mode and delete the driver. Sometimes when you install SP1 it duplicates the drivers instead of updating them. Once you delete the driver restart into normal and it will reinstall the new driver for the cdrom.

PT880 Neo-LSR 7008 ver 1 dead after bios flash
I flashed my new (well it's been on a shelf for a while) PT880 Neo-LSR 7008 with a Win98 floppy and now it doesn't boot anymore.
I followed the instructions on the website ... make boot floppy, put bios on different disk. when I ran the flash program, it
successfully erased the old bios then I got a error reading drive a: error. I assumed it was looking for command.com or some
other nonsense, but I hit r for retry several times before taking the bios disk out and putting the boot floppy in. then I
hit r for retry again. the flash program then continued, starting the flash process, finishing, and finally giving me a 'success' message
and sending me back to the DOS prompt. So I assumed it worked.
Now when I try to boot the computer (which booted fine before the flash), I get nothing. The D-bracket-2 never gets past
all four lights (= system power on - "the d-led will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly"), even though
I changed nothing other than flashing the bios. The cpu fan is plugged in and turns so I don't think it's the thermal protection
circuit.
I tried hitting ctrl-home to force a bios recover with a bios file named amibios.rom in the floppy but I don't see any drive
lights come on the floppy after several minutes.
I also tried booting after clearing the cmos with jumper and also physically taking the battery out. This is not my first time
flashing a bios, but the first time I had a problem. Anybody got any suggestions? oh yeah, I used
the 1.9 bios 11-26-04 to flash.okay, thanks. the files check out fine on a different floppy drive (was written using the floppy on the dead computer).
the MSI tech support people also think it is a bad board (even though it worked fine prior to the bios upgrade). wasn't sure I would get a reply from the ts people, site says you should get a confirm letter first, which i didn't. luckily i still have at least a month based on manufacture date till the 1 yr warranty ends. -
PT-880 NEO-LSR can't handle new memory ??
I recently decided to improve the performance of my "gaming rig" by pulling the Corsair value memory and just replaced it with Corsair twinX1024 PC3200-XL. I was impressed with the reviews and the out of the box "plug-n-frag" feature that will boot up at the timings of 2-2-2-5. Very tight timings for someone who isn't really interested in any major overclocking. The problem is that within 10 minutes of installing it on my PT-880 NEO-LSR board the system crashed. After some head scratching and continued crashes, I decided it was the new memory. The Corsair value memory never had an issue in dual channel mode. So I ended up running MEMtest86 on it, and it passed. So back to square one again. Well, after alot of trial and error I decided to go in the BIOS and turned off "auto by SPD" and through lots of experimenting , have it now stable with the following settings : 2-2-3-6 @2.75v. Well, It's very stable now with no crashes for 2 days. So can anyone tell me why this board can't handle the default settings of this memory? Are the extremely tight timings too much for this board? I really want to get what I paid for, and am open to suggestions to make it run stable at the advertised 2-2-2-5. If it helps, my system is as follows: MSI PT-880 NEO-LSR w/ latest BIOS flash v1.9 (I think thats the number), P-4 3.2ghz (Northwood), thermaltake silent Purepower 420watt PSU, Seagate 120gb. SATA HD, Gainward Golden Sample Geforce 6800 GT (overclocked), Creative Audigy2 soundcard, lite-on 52x CD/DVD rom combo , and lite-on 8x DVD burner drive. I built this system myself, but until now have never had to manually set timings to get it to run (unless overclocking). Maybe I'm finding out why there are $70.00 Mobo's and $200.00 mobos ? Thanks in Advance group for any help!
NovJoe, Just wanted to let you know that Corsair was good enough to respond to me and gave me a few "tweaks" they wanted to see me try. Although on this Mobo I can see no where to set the burst length to 8 as they asked, and for some reason the The SDRAM Active to Precharge (tRAS) can only be manually set down to 6T and not 5T as they wanted. I ended up resetting everything back to "auto by SPD" (reluctantly awaiting the big crash again on reboot). Much to my amazement it has been running for about 2hrs. now without a crash on the same auto settings it refused to run at 2 days ago when I installed it. Really strange huh? So being the memory newb that I am.....how can I view what it's actually running the timings at presently under auto settings?? Thanks- Herb

PT880 Neo-LSR/WD740GD SATA Incompatibility?
I have a new PT880 Neo-LSR and a new WD740GD Raptor hard drive, and the motherboard will not properly recogize the hard drive when it is connected to the SATA connector. I've had no problem getting into the bios, or booting from a CD or floppy. In fact, I successfully flashed it from a floppy with the latest bios to see if that would resolve the HD recognition problem, but no luck. When I try to install Windows XP, the installation fails every time because no hard drive is detected.
I ran a Western Digital hard drive test from a floppy, and it incorrectly recognized the WD740GD as a WD1200BB. I went ahead and tried to run the test, but the test failed due to some undefined problem with the hard drive.
The remainder of the new system components include a Pentium 2.4A Prescott, 2 256 meg sticks of Kingmax PC-3500 SuperRAM, Antec TRUE430 PS and ATI Radeon 9700 video card.
I've assembled about a dozen computers from scratch, and have never been stumped like this! I can't figure out if it's a motherboard problem, a hard drive problem, a compatibility problem or a problem of me missing a setting somewhere. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions!
1) I am not overclocking. I'm trying to get the computer to run for the first time with all default settings.
2) I have hit F6 at the start of Windows XP install, and installed the drivers from the included diskette (G72-VASA020 VOA SATA RAID driver for VT6420/VT8237). From the diskette, I've tried to install the SATA RAID driver for Windows XP and the PATA IDE driver individually and together. No matter which one I use, or if I use both, same problem: Windows XP installation does not recognize that a hard drive is installed. I've even installed the two drivers in different order. I've tried every option. Hard drive still not recognized.
3) There are only 2 SATA connectors on the mainboard -- SATA1 and SATA2. I've tried both connectors, and neither works. I even bought a new SATA cable in case the one I received with the MB was bad. Same problem with new cable -- Windows XP installation does not recognize that a hard drive is installed. The AMI bios does not offer SATA Enhanced or Native options nor SATA+PATA combination. It offers "Onboard PATA-IDE," which must be enabled for the CD drive to be recognized; "Internal SATA Controller," which must be enabled for the HD connected to 1 of the 2 SATA connectors to be recognized; and, under "Internal SATA Controller," "Boot ROM Function," which seems to make no difference whether it's enabled or disabled.
I've probably tried to install Windows XP now about 25 times with various combinations of bios options and drivers. A couple of times I've actually gotten to the point where I got to agree with the Microsoft agreement. But the window that it took me to said that I could not install Windows XP on the hard drive that had been identified. There was no option given to format the HD. As I mentioned previously, it still mistakenly thinks that the hard drive is a WD1200BB instead of the correct WD740GD Raptor. But it won't let me do anything with the HD.
Does anyone have any experience starting up the PT880 Neo-LSR with any SATA hard drive attached? The reason I ask is because I want to know if it correctly identified your hard drive on the initial bootup before you even attempted to install an operating system. As I've said, mine incorrectly identifies the hard drive some of the time upon bootup, and some of the time it does not identify any hard drive at all. As far as I know, a hard drive connected to a SATA connector should be properly recognized on bootup. -
[PT880-Neo LSR]Power supply problem
Hello,
We've installed the new motherboard today, it model is PT880 Neo LSR. Well we've got everything plugged in, but when we try to turn on our computer it doesn't turn on.
There is a case switch, but when turn on, the fans work for like 1 second then it stop.
I've tried the Troubleshooting guide on the website, and studying the Manual, but I could not find a way to fix this.
Can anyone help us fix this power supply problem please?
ThanksQuote

I only heard a sound psssst, and nothing run. I tested it many time and it still not work. Then I UNPLUG the 4-pin connector from the power supply to the mainboard, and test again, this time, only all the fan RUN except the the fan in the power supply DID NOT run. Is it because that the power supply got problem? I used another power supply 420w to test but nothing run either.

The psssst sound----sounds like something shorted out. Pull everything out and put it back in with a different PSU.
Don't put a hard drive or floppy in-----just CPU, RAM mobo, vid card, fans, PSU-----see if it will post. -
PT8-Neo LSR and Radeon 9700pro
Ok so I bought my new MSI board for my 2nd PC and happily installed the P4 2.4 cpu (northwood 533fsb non-ht, this is my 2nd box after all) and 1gb ram.
Placed in the Radeon 9700Pro (with Arctic Cooling vga silencer) and everything worked great.. in fact I was very impressed with the performance.
Then this morning, I succumbed to the bright idea of .. hey I wonder if there are any updates for the bios or drivers? ( ) So installed Liveupdate 3 that came with the board, and after it had run and repatched itself twice it told me, your bios is out of date.. here's ver 2.00..
So I downloaded it, made the dos floppy, and flashed the bios (a procedure I've done many times over the years) and set the new bios up.. win2k booted fine, and everything was great until... I opened internet explorer, and the radeon promptly crashed, the ATI software recovered it, but everytime I tried anything remotely concerning graphics, the Radeon crashed. This espicially happened with anything 3D of course, but also would happen frequently with 2D gfx also.
To cut a long story short, after experimenting (like all damn day ) with every bios for the PT8 Neo-LSR available, it seems that version 1.1 is the ONLY bios for the board which supports the Radeon 9700pro card under win2k at least. Or rather the only version that works for me and allows me to run games and stuff without Radeon stopping responding.
System isn't overclocked, and neither is the Radeon btw.. so I think I have the system working again now with v1.1 of the bios, but I haven't tested it a lot yet.. but at least it loads the radeon screen savers without crashing so far.Yeah..
system is as follows..
Msi PT8-Neo LSR
Pentium 4 2.4C 533fsb (non-ht)
1gb 266 ddr ram (2x 512mb)
Connect 3D radeon 9700pro 128mb (Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer in perma High mode)
Creative SBLive value!
IBM Deskstar 60gb ide1 master
Seagate Barracuda 30Gb ide1 slave
Plextor cd writer ide2 master
Seagate Barracuda 80Gb sata 1
I think the idea mentioned before might be worth a shot... I can feel a full install of windows coming on.. more self torture
Edit
Yes, during the course of the day I did install the latest ati catalyst drivers and dx9 also.. -
I posted this message last night but I think it got lost in space.
My System

I am having problems with my new 875P LSR. Installed O/S and software using FAT 32 and it wiped on 2 occasions. Could not boot up trying all the sugestions on the web. Using Partition MAgic rescue disk I could still see the drives and was able to check for errors but when I used my old 98 boot disk C: came up with a message of invalid media but D: was still readable? During both the previous setups I used the F6 option and loaded the Intel raid XP driver for ICHR, was this the reason for my loss of system.
On my third try I used the same partitions but did not use the F6 option and also formatted in NFTS (by accident). Everything appeard to be working so far BUT!!!!!. I don't want the system to do over clocking I just want a secure setup for stability in normal use. I do not play games, I use the inter4net, edit my home movies and normal word processing,
Questions
What am I doing wrong?
What should the cofigreration for the bios onboard ID chip be. I have Mine set in Native mode, P ATA + S ATA, NO, NO, Both, S ATA 1st channel, S ATA PO1 PO2 Raid NO
Do I need to use the Intel IAA driver -or- does XP have drivers -or- do I have to download some other driver or controler for the S ATA.
Can anyone suggest a better layout for my system and how can I tel if the computer is operating with the proper drivers for S ATA, P ATA, H/T and all the other gagets on board. Any suggestions and advise will be appreciated
Swan705 in Ontario CanadaHi back
Thanks again for the response, followed your instructions now I show a 82801eb under the controler section. Is that all I needed? Another question I like to keep a copy of windows 98 se on my other drive and would like to use the F11 key to boot to it. Is there a procedure of installing it so I don't screw up my XP system. I use a disk tray to keep the drive in so I can take it out for safety as I also store backups of my personel files on it. Your sugestions are really appreciated. Swan705 -
Can a Pentium 4 "based" Celeron work on a PT880 NEO-LSR?
I'm asking cause I'm kinda strapped for cash and need my PC up and running soon till I can afford something better.
These new Celeron's by the way are made with the same P4 core right (just lower L2 cache). So there's no reason they shouldn't work in my board even though the NEO-LSR isn't rated for Celeron. right?yea, this processor didn't work. I hate this MB. It's the first time that building a PC that this has ever happened to me.
The diagnosis indicated that Cpu was either damaged or not installed properly. I tried installing it six times, nothing. No message, nothing on the screen..nothing. I even took the heat sink off and turned on the PC and the CPU felt barely warm like it wasn't even plugged in.
I think i'm going to sell this board and call it a day. -
