"Unable to join network" message but finds network

Hi,
During the first few days after I got the iPhone I was able to connect to the internet through WiFi. This has stopped, be it public places, the office or the home WLAN.
Other iPhones, after entering the network password, have good access through their WiFi.
While the iPhone sees the network and gives its correct name, the information for IP address, Subnet etc. are all blank.
I completely reinstalled the firmware, I even upgraded from 2.1 to 2.1 .... to no avail.
I took off the network password, rebooted the whole thing (Router + iPhone), but there is no change.
Is there anything else I can do? (And no, I did not drop the phone either.)
Cheers
Piedro

Hi Piedro,
What type of wireless security is being used on the Wi-Fi network?
If you are using WEP, make sure you have a 5 or 13 character password as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1344
Try Resetting Network Settings on the iPhone, go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings.
Also, this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 provides general tips that will resolve most Wi-Fi issues.

  • Question: New IPad error message "unable to join network" on my home wifi.

Hi. Bought New IPad and used it on commercial wifi spots like Starbucks, no problem. At home my Linksys sees my wifi network but when I enter password I get "unable to join network" error message. My IPad 2 connects as usual. Same password. No problem.
I rebooted router and then turned on New IPad. Same result. I re-set network settings to factory. Still get "unable to join network". Tried entering Security Key instead of password. No go.
    Please help. Thanks.

found answer. Choose "other" network. Put Security Key in box asking for Password.
For me, entered WPA and Name of exisitng network.

  • Trying to connect to a known internet connection but i keep getting the response "unable to join network"

Trying to connect to a known internet connection but I keep getting the response "Unable to join network" and the internet is connected, please help.

Okay now this description was pretty vague but it could be a few things. First thing to try. Turn wifi off and then one again and try to connect. If this fails read on.
The second step is to select that network in the wifi settings so you get an expanded menu of it. Follow these steps from the home menu on your ipad... SETTINGS>Wi-FI>NETWORK NAME (you have to click the little blue arrow)> FORGET THIS NETWORK. Then turn wifi off and then on. Then try to connect again. If this fails... well read on,
Okay, so now you really know it's most likely not your ipad, so go on down to your wifi router and turn it off, wait ten seconds, turn it on again. WITH YOUR IPAD OFF. Then turn on your ipad on and then try to connect again. If this fails... Then you'll have to do some more complex things. You could try setting up the network again. IF that fails too. Leave some details about your router, brand, year etc... And I'll try to let you know what else it could be.

  • Wi-fi working on other devices.  When trying to connect on ipad it states"unable to join network".  Some of my efforts have resulted in short term connection, but then I lose it again.

anybody have any idea what would cause my wi-fi to state "unable to join network when all other devices are haveing no connection problem.?

  • Another Iphone topic with unable to join network

Yes, I have reset the iphone and router
Yes, I have unsecured the network and was able to join, but once I secured it...I get the unable to join
Yes, I have updated the firmware and cycled the power on my WRT54GS
Yes, I have tried lower case letter in the password
Yes, I have created a static IP and entered the information
Yes, the security on the WRT54GS is WPA
Yes, I have check to see if the wireless channel was in 1 or 11
    Anything else??

Dingle, I currently share your problem; however... I was able to login to networks ONCE. The first time. The phone was new (just got it a few days ago), and I joined the network at work, and one in another office. Happy connects. Successful connects. Never again though. Now I get the 'unable to join network error' consistently when I try to join these very same networks. I have reset my network settings. Turned off 3G capabilities (since it's another thing that I've noticed changed since those few early days of new phone, that is, I noticed 3G receptivity is on all the time now with high bars, although when I first got the phone I got ATT, E, the dot, and 3G... they all took turns). The error remains. I wonder if it's an app that I may have installed. I also just connected the phone to my Mac for the first time, but that was post 'unable to join network' error. webapp?? Could it be a memory issue? I don't even know how to refresh cache (or if one even exists).

  • Unable to join network on Iphone5

sudenly my iPhone 5 gives this message "Unable to Join the network ..." when i try to join my WiFi at home. i tried resetting the router, rest the network settings on my iPhone, but still get same error message.

This might work for some of you. I'm pretty sure most of these issues are caused by the type of Wireless Security and the Radio mode of the router. I had to rule out a lot of enviromental factors to get my problem fixed—type of case, the walls or how I was holding the phone.
I had 2 random problems with the WiFi of my iPhone 5 (6.1.3):
    • "Unable to join network ..."
    • If it did connect, it had a very poor ping+up/down speeds (lots of Speedtest.net results)
    My home network setup:
    • 2nd gen Airport Extreme (7.6.3)
    • Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    • Network extended with an Airport Express (7.6.3)
    • Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g Compatible)
    • Radio Channel: Auto
    • Location: AEBS is in the basement and the Express is on 2nd floor.
    • Router Mode: DHCP & NAT with a 365 days for the lease on each IP
    • The Airport Express is setup to "Extend a wireless network"
I have 2 other iOS 6 devices and 3 other Macs which have no problem connecting to the above setup. The iPhone 5 on the other hand either couldn't connect or when it did, it would have a very poor connection. It always forced me to switch to LTE.
After many months of putting up with this problem on my phone, I finally gave up and booked an appointment at the Apple store. They wiped the phone and did the usual test with the Apple store WiFi which is freaky fast. The phone had no problems using their open network—both before or after the wipe. I was pretty disapointed after wasting 2 hours of my day.
I came home hoping the problem had gone away. Nope. "Unable to join ..." ARGHHhh... One of the solutions that people have suggested is to switch to an unsecure WiFi. That's not heppning here. So, I decided to play around with the settings and see what works and this is what FIXED my problem:
    • Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5GHz)
    • Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
That's it. After the reset of both the base station and the Express, my iPhone 5 has been connected for a few hours without any problems. I've tried disconnecting and re-connecting a few times and so far so good. I hope this works for some of you.

  • 8gb 4th generation ipod touch is unable to join network

This started a couple days ago after I unplugged and re-plugged my router. The internet works fine on the computer, and on everyone else's phone in the house, but not on my ipod touch. I've tried resetting the network settings (multiple times), and unplugging my router while waiting 30 seconds or so to plug it back in. I do not think it is a password issue because I've entered my correct password multiple times as well and I only receive the "Unable to join the network ____", even when I input the incorrect password so I could test it, it resulted in me getting the "unable to join network" notification again. I don't know what else I can do to fix this problem and I would really appreciate some help on this issue.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    9. it cant connect to any wifi router however it can only be conected to internet via bluetooth tethering from my phone .
please guide me with your professional opinion . is this some sort of software glitch or hardware problem ? thanks

I don't know if this will work for you but I bought a new iPad Mini 3 this past week and I have Verizon Mifi. My new iPad mini3 would try to connect but couldn't. I went back to Verizon and the tech selected the option "Forget this network." When she did that, my Mifi came up again by itself. My iPad was searching for a connection and my Mifi showed up. After the connection showed up on it's own again, the tech was able to select the network and then selected the option to put in the password and that fixed the problem. I would have never thought selecting "Forget this network" would have worked but it did. I don't know if that will work for you.

  • IPad mini wifi cellar with 6.0.2 "unable to join network"

iPad mini wifi cellar with 6.0.2 "unable to join network"
my router is DLink Dir-615, and the iPhone 4(ios5.x),iPad2(ios5.x) and notbooks(windows 7) can connect to the router successfully.
And I tried to reset iPad mini's network, even reset all the settings, but still no luck.
I doubt it is the hardware issue of iPad mini. Pleasesssssssssssssse, HELP ME OUT OF IT.
plus, I tried setting virtual host with Windows 7, still no luck.

    Wireless Radio : Enabled
    802.11 Mode :Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b
    Channel Width :20MHz
    Channel :13
    WISH :Active
    Wi-Fi Protected Setup :Enabled/Configured
These are my settings! (copy paste)
What do I have to do if they still would refuse the change it? In fact I just searched for the warranty policy of apple.. So I got an problem after an update of apple, they recongized its their fault, their software fault.. In their warranty you can read the following: Cover of breakdown service or replacement with regard to. --> Lacks which arise after supply to the customer.  So in fact i should get a new one?! But i can't obey them or can I? What should I do?
EDIT: in my router logs I see this a few times: Blocked incoming TCP packet from 198.144.121.77:80 to 178.117.139.126:3072 as SYN:ACK received but there is no active connection  What does it mean?

  • IPad 2 can't connect to WiFi/unable to join network

The iPad 2 (WiFi only) initially had no problems whatsoever in the first several months after I bought it. Then I didn't use Internet on the iPad for 2-3 months, as there was no WiFi for that time. Now when I try to connect it to my WiFi, it either temporarily connects with a slow, patchy connection (spinning processing symbol on the top left corner) or the "Unable to join network" message pops up. All my other iDevices connect perfectly at a high speed. I have tried the following to no avail:
    Reset network settings
    Reset all settings
    Turned router off/on
    Same room as router
    Forget network
    Turned WiFi settings off/on
    Restored to factory settings 3X
    Changed WiFi password
    Changed WiFi security
    Changed WiFi name

Can't turn off router at the hotel, it hasn't worked at any wifi hotspot. I just never really monkey with it.

  • Everytime i try to connect to wifi it says unable to join network

Everytime I try to connect to my wifi it says unable to join network, my iphone did this to but then I had my router firmware upgraded. So it shouldnt be that.

If you are unable to select Forget This Network for the network on your iPad, go to Settings > General > Reset and select Reset Network Settings. This will erase all wi-fi network settings from your iPad for every wi-fi network you have connected your iPad with.
If no change after this, do you connect your iPad to any other wi-fi network besides your own? If so, any problem connecting your iPad with any other wi-fi network?

  • Always able to access wi fi except one says unable to join network

Says I am unable to join network doesn't give me the password box just says unable to join network

It may be that the battery is the issue. I am having the same problems - unable to log in to my WIFI at home, which I have never had an issue with until yesterday, when I started getting the "Unable to access XXX network".
I have tried everything including full iphone restore and router factory restore, but nothing. I did note that after having the phone switched off overnight, I was able to access my wireless network for about fifteen minutes then it just dropped the connection and now I am back to no access whatsoever.
    Take a read here:
    http://www.applesource.com.au/iphone/soa/iPhone-Wi-Fi-failures-caused-by-battery -heat-/0,2000070787,339295984,00.htm
It is one of many internet postings on this issue and would make sense of the posting above mine..
I'm going to try reverting to 2.2.0 - people such as Leo Laporte on Macbreak Weekly have been complaining of battery issues since upgrading to 2.2.1
