Unable to join virtual machines to domain controller

Hello all
I am studying for MCSE 2012 R2 and have decided to move from VMware Esxi 5.5 to Hyper-V in Server 2012R2.
I built the host (Server 2012r2) and so far 3 VMs (all are Server 2012R2 VMs) . I promoted one of the VMs to a Domain controller and things appear to have installed with no issue. This is what I have done so far:
Added Static IP addresses for all VMs
Configured each VM's DNS setting to use the DC
When I try to join one of the virtual servers to the domain controller this is what I get.
Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "wolfpack.local":
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.wolfpack.local
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals.
This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
10.0.0.14
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
wolfpack.local
local
. (the root zone)

Hi Phil,
I have noticed that the domain is wolfpack.local but  two VMs has another DNS suffix "home.network" .
Please remove it and join it to domain again .

Hello Elton and thank you for the response.
I was looking at that same setting on my VM and its empty.

  • Problems to join a virtual machine on Domain.

    Hi Everybody
Im trying to join my windows 8 virtual machine on a Domain mounted in Windows server 2012, but I.m not able to do it, when I try, i receive the below message.
Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.
DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain "tcsgdl.com":
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.tcsgdl.com
The following domain controllers were identified by the query:
    tcsgdldc01.tcsgdl.com
However no domain controllers could be contacted.
Common causes of this error include:
    - Host (A) or (AAAA) records that map the names of the domain controllers to their IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.
    - Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.

  • How to Add VM XP Machine to Domain Controller

    Hi,
I have a Server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition and its a Domain Controller / AD
in the same Server i have a Hyper-V Virtual Machine running Windows XP and installed the legacy network driver and can see the network icon on the VM and mannually entered the IP for that but i cannot promot it to my Domain can any one help me..

I take it you have a WS 2008 R2 server with Hyper-V and AD roles installed, with 1 WinXP VM.
I suppose you mean to join the XP VM to the domain, not promote it.
    I recommend:
Upgrade your Hypervisor to 2012 R2
Follow best practices. Only Hyper-V role on the physical machine. Setup a dedicated VM as a DC
Use Win8.1 not XP. XP is no longer supported.
If you must use XP temporarily, no need for legacy vNIC, use the regular Network Adapter
To join the domain, is a matter of troubleshooting networking. Make sure the DNS server IP on the VM is set to the domain DNS servers and they're reachable/pingable

  • I am unable to install Virtual Machines on my Mid-2013 MacBook Air

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I have recently moved away from a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro to a new Mid-2013 MacBook Air. As much as it pains me, I have a need to install a virtual machine running Windows 7 in order to utilize an application called vSphere. The vSphere web interface is too unreliable to use via any web browser, so running a Windows VM is the only way forward.
However, when using VMWare Fusion 5 (I know 6 is available, but I do not have a license for it) or VirtualBox (very latest version) I receive an error which states that my CPU is not 64-bit compatible. I was under the impression that since Snow Leopard (10.6) was release that Mac OS was fully 64-bit. My MacBook Air is currently running Mavericks (10.9.1). It has a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 CPU.
I read that Apple restricts access to the EFI firmware settings, as I originally thought it was a case of enabling Virtualization capabilities on the processor. To further add to the dilemma my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro has no issues running VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox, so I am at a loss as to why I am unable use these virtualization platforms on my new Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that the new macbook air's from 2013 have a 64 bit core i5 4250u processors.

Depending on the version of your domain, you could try an offline join.

I would say that it depends on the client OS (Windows 7 or Windows 8) if offline domain join could be used or not, not that much regarding the level of the domain, you can always use the
/downlevel switch to target a DC running Windows Server 2003 for example.

  • "Low Memory Warning" and "fails to create a virtual machine"

    From ide.conf, I learnt:
If you are getting the 'Low Memory Warning' Message Dialog while running JDeveloper, please increase the -Xmx value below from the default 768M to something greater, like 1024M or 1250M. If after increasing the value, JDeveloper is no longer starting up because it fails to create a virtual machine, then please reduce the modified -Xmx value.
    However,
If I set it to a bigger value, say 512M, it fails to create a virtual machine.
If I set it to a smaller value, say 400M, it throws Low Memory Warning after a short while.
So I do not know how to do. Total physical memory of my box is 4G. Free physical user memory after starting jdev is 1.5G.

512M isn't bigger, the default (according to your reading) is 768M...
I just tried with JDeveloper 11.1.2.2.0 (64-bit machine, but using 32-bit JVM) - works fine with 1024M - just to confirm that my changes are working, 5024M does give me "unable to create virtual machine"
Have you messed about with other settings?

  • How to import a virtual machine to a Hyper-V server by programme on Windows server 2012 ?

    Hi
As we know, Hyper-V of Windows server 2012 can support importing a VM without exporting it first manually now.
So I try to code a programme to do it.
I use the method "ExportVirtualSystemEx" of  "Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService". referenced by

But the error said that "You can import a virtual machine only if you used Hyper-V to create and export it."
Since we can import an unexported virtual machine in Hyper-V of windows server 2012 manually, so is there any API to support to do it by programme ?

  • Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

    Hi all,
    Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;
'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'
I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'
I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue
    it would seem
some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the line
hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.
    James

The hypervisor event log message is generated only at boot - so this would be expected.  Also vmbus should not be running on the host (I was looking at a VM yesterday)...  This error message is generated only when the vid is determined not to be
running or cannot communicate with the hypervisor.
I have seen this due to anti-virus software in the past or due to driver verifier being configured.  Since it looks like you checked driver verifier already do you have anti-virus software installed?  If so have you followed the best practices
    and exempted the Hyper-v services?

To resolve this problem, configure the real-time scanning component within your antivirus software to exclude the following directories and files:
Default virtual machine configuration directory (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V)
    Custom virtual machine configuration directories
Default virtual hard disk drive directory (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks)
Custom virtual hard disk drive directories
Custom replication data directories, if you are using Hyper-V Replica
    Snapshot directories
Vmms.exe (Note: This file may have to be configured as a process exclusion within the antivirus software.)
Vmwp.exe (Note: This file may have to be configured as a process exclusion within the antivirus software.)

  • Need to delete Transport system , which is not domain controller

I need to delete transport system on machine which is not domain controller .
our domain controller system is not avalible now .
how can i delete the transport system on my machine as domain controller system is not avaliable .
Please let me know what can i do ??
    Thanks,
    Asc

    Hi,
Logon to any system which is in your transport path in client 000. Then in stms, go to Overview ---> Systems. Here you can find all the systems in your transport path. You can also find the domain controller which you have configured as before.
Now, goto Extras----> Delete TMS Configuration.
After deleting, logon to system which you want to make as domain controller in client 000. when you execute stms, now it will ask for new stms setup, which you might be aware of.
If you need more guidance, let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Can't make a Backup Domain Controller

I have one Open Directory Master and three replicas. The Master is also set to be the Windows Primary Domain Controller. But none of the replicas can join the domain or join as the Backup Domain Controller.
When I search the logs on the Master, I see:
could not find new user/computer luca$ in passdb
luca (a replica) is in Workgroup Manager. I even added a Kerberos entry for it.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Solved my own problem...
Turns out that some users on the network took it upon themselves to join a Workgroup with the same name as our Domain. Samba doesn't seem to like that at all. So make sure your workgroup names are never the same as your domain names.

  • Can Hyper-V host join a domain of a virtual machine domain controller on that same host?

Learning about Failover Clustering with Hyper-V. I have two hyper-v nodes(servers). I want to add them to a failover cluster, but it said that the nodes must be in a domain to join failover cluster.
Can I create a domain controller role on a virtual machine hosted on that same node and join that node to the domain?
Can I just create a role on one of the two nodes along with hyper-v role and join the second node to the domain?

    You can create
an AD VM and join the Hyper-V host to it in Server 2012 (or Hyper-V Server 2012, the preferred OS for running a Hyper-V Cluster). This did
not work in any previous version of Windows.
This would be a really horrible idea for a production environment, but suitable for a lab/training.
Also, you only need one host/node to form a cluster (though it probably throws errors/warnings if you do)

  • Windows domain controller in a virtual machine: how dangerous is saving its state for a short period of time?

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 virtualization cluster. All the hosts are connected to an external storage system, and virtual machines' files are stored on external volumes (CSVs). All the hosts and virtual machines are a part of the same AD domain
(mixed Windows Server 2012 RTM / 2008 R2 domain controllers). All the domain controllers are running in the virtual machines on the hosts of this cluster.
To prevent problems when all the hosts are turned off and then on simultaneously (for example, because of a power failure) all the domain controller VM files has been placed on local disks of the virtualization hosts (not on the Cluster Shared
Volumes). As Hyper-V services don't depend on other Windows Server services (except its networking components), it means that my domain controllers can always start, providing the virtualization host can start at all. However, it also means
that those DCs cannot be (quickly) migrated to other hosts while their current hosts are being rebooted. So if I need to reboot a virtualization host to install new updates, for example, I have to shut down the corresponding DC, reboot the host
and wait for the DC to finish cold boot and come back online. It means some interruption of service for our users, which, in turn, requires me to perform the reboots late in night.
The downtime can be significantly decreased by saving the state of the VM in which the DC is running. However, all the articles I've found on the Internet strongly recommend against it. I'm trying to understand why this recommendation was issued in the first
place. However, I'm unable to find a clear explanation. I've found some statements that saving state of a DC can cause serious AD replication problems because of tombstoning, and that the password of a DC computer account may be changed
while the DC itself stays in the saved state, which could prevent the DC from connecting to the domain after its state has been restored. However, those considerations are non-significant when we discuss a short-time
(5 to 10 minutes) saved state.
I work with AD and virtualization long time, and I fail to see any danger in saving state of a DC for several minutes. In my opinion, after its state has been restored it would simply replicate all the AD changes from other DCs, and that's all.
    What's your opinion?

    Hello,
    as stated in "http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/virtual_active_directory_domain_controller_virtualization_hyperv(v=ws.10).aspx"
Operational Considerations for Virtualized Domain Controllers
Domain controllers that are running on virtual machines have operational restrictions that do not apply to domain controllers that are running on physical machines. When you use a virtualized domain controller, there are some virtualization software features
and practices that you should not use:
Do not pause, stop, or store the
saved state of a domain controller
in a virtual machine for time periods longer than the tombstone lifetime of the forest and then resume from the paused or saved state.
This may sound as it is supported to store it for shorter times and use it.
BUT recommendation also from the Hyper-V Program manager in
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/11/24/the-domain-controller-dilemma.aspx recommends against using them.
    Also best practices
