Unable to leave Disk Utility / no Startvolume

Hi,
two months ago I (who always have been a Windows user) bought the new MacBook Pro Late 2014 (15",16GB RAM,i7), in the setup process the first problem occurred.
I enabled FileVault, but I stuck after a few minutes. After ca. 20mins the encryption process stopped with a kind of black screen, which disappeared after a few seconds. Since then the process was "paused" and FileVault was the application with the highest battery consumption.
Therefore I decided to do a fresh install of Yosemite, disableing FileVault this time and loading my TimeMachine backup later.
I booted and pressed cmd+r to open the disk utility and I selected "Install Yosemite", verifying my software license (?) failed the first time, but then it worked. The only problem now is that I couldnt select Macintosh HD to install Yosemite on it, the only available partition is Recovery HD (locked). Then I tried to install from my backup. Same problem here, I could select my backup, but at the next step there was nothing to install it on or a error message popped up. Next I tried to normally boot the Mac, but it couldnt find any startvolume. I checked the partition with the diagnose tool (dont know the English translation). Everythings seems to be fine, but I cant to a lot with the Macintosh HD partition because most of the options are greyed out or not available.
Any help would be nice.

    I bought an iMac via ebay and I am unable to boot to disk utility and reinstall mountain lion becouse the guy I bought it from didnt delete the users nor reinstall OS
    I have a Pc keyboard and am pressing the correct command+r but mac just hangs on apple sign and loading.
    I can enter single user terminal and this is what I did and can do. There are 4 users in the /Users
    tried following;
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    disk is ok
    /launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServicesLocal.plist

    I am connected to the internet via ethernet and I am stuck here not knowing what to do! I dont have an original DVD from Apple but I do have an image on the DVD.
    There is no other mac in my house either and I cant make bootable usb or firewire.
    Any suggestions on where to go from here or I am screwed?

  • Unable to use Disk Utility to repair disk.

    Hi all
    I have been having some problems trying to transfer movies from computer to my iPod. Someone just suggested that I use Disk Utility to verify disk permissions, as well as the disk. I was able to verify disk permissions and repair them. Noticed the some had something to do with iTunes, so that might fix my problem with transferring movies to my iPod. I then tried to verify the disk, but I got the following error "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Also this program shows that the following "Checking volume bitmap.
    Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
    The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
    The <Repair Disk> button is not darkened, but is grey, such that is not an option. Any other way to repair this disk.

    The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive.
    You have to boot from the install disk.
    To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart; when you hear the chime hold down C key until the apple logo appears.
    This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
    Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities in 10.4 and navigate to the Disk Utility application.
    Select the start up drive, then go to the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
    If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
    After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
    Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.

  • Unable to launch disk utility

    When I now try to launch Disk Utility it immediately fails to launch. I know it has not been deleted. I tried to copy it from my PowerBook and place it in both applications and library but it won't open and gives a message that it is not compatible with this platform. I had previous problems that were corrected by an Apple qualified technician and it had worked after that. I tried to access it to repair permissions after a rather long period of not opening it (DU). How can I get it to work again? Thanks.

    Reinstall the 10.5.8 COMBO update, repair permissions, and restart.

  • Unable to open Disk Utility

    I've recently purchased a new external hard disk, and I am not able to use on my Mac unless I format it. So, I formatted my external hard disk, and now I would like to change the format, Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled) to a format that can be read both on Mac and Windows.
    I understand that Disk Utility is able to partition my external hard disk so that the format can be changed, but the problem is I am not able to open my Disk Utility on my Mac. It doesn't stay open. I've tried a couple of times, but it still doesn't work. I've even tried to clear my caches but it still doesn't work.
    Please help. Thank you.

    Without the DVD there is almost nothing you can do with your system to fix or maintain it.

  • Unable to run disk utility

    since Leopard installation. When i click on verify permissions on mac hd it just keeps running(blue stripped bar). anyone else having this problem?

    Not sure about bugs, but I think the issue is related to package receipts. My Tiger Volume has 250 receipts, but the Leopard volume (archive and installed over the same Tiger clone) has only 31, I think the loss of 200 + receipts may be causing problems. I'm going to try installing Leopard on its own and see if that is any better.

  • Disk image mounting and disk utility oddities on Xserve running OS X Server

    I continue to run into an odd problem on one of my server setups. It is a 1.33 GHZ Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11. There are four ATA drive installed (two of which are mirrored using Softraid 3.6.6). There are a total of 6 Firewire drives on the Firewire 800 Bus. Three of those are used for sharing out files and the other three are for various backups.
    What happens is that I sometimes run into an issue where dmg files will not mount. There are no error messages and nothing in the log, they just don't open. Likewise I am unable to launch Disk Utility, it just spins and spins never displaying the drives, again nothing in the logs, no crashreporter. I have also found out that the same thing happens in System Profiler when I try to get a list of drives on either the ATA bus or the Firewire bus. Mind you they all show up on the desktop. Likewise I have had no luck getting them to list or run permissions or the like from the diskutil commandline. Now I am able to mount actual drives. When I swap out the offsite backup drive it mounts the new drive just fine. However... when I eject the drive and it has disappeared from the desktop and then I remove it... I get the removal error.. you didn't put the drive away properly message.
    Now there are no disk related events showing up anywhere in the logs. The only other oddity that I can see is that my rsync backups tend to generate a ton of zombie processes. I get zombies of cron, sh, rsync, and mail.
    It is just a pretty straightforward shell script
    /usr/local/bin/rsync -E --archive -eahfs --delete /Volumes/Files/Shared\ Items/ /Volumes/Backup\ Files/Shared\ Items/
    Running in cron with it set to email the logs.
    Now this does all clear up when I reboot the server... but it also doesn't reboot cleanly. It closes down all of the applications, login window and the like and then hangs on the shut down portion. Eventually I have to power it off manually. I've done the normal Volume checking on the main drives and they come up with 0 errors.
    Hoping someone might have some ideas before I end up having to backup and reinstall the whole thing.

    Also when I try to open the disk image file I get the following error in the log.
    xserve kernel[0]: disk10s10: media is not present.

  • Disk Utility will not open after 10.5.5 update..

    I'm unable to open disk utility, ive tried booting in safe mode and after restarts aswell, and the icon bounces and then quits. Pretty annoying, as i have the ichat video issue aswell and i need to repair permissions in order to fix this and I cant. I know i could boot disk utility off the install cd aswell, but that doesnt fix the problem of the app on my HD not opening..?
    Any help please..

  • Disk Utility hanging on Erase/Partition OR Howto backup a dual boot Mactel?

    I'm trying to use Disk Utility to format an external usb hd as HFS+ for backing up my Macbook. Running 10.4.7 and Disk Util 10.5.6 (latest version afaik)
    Problem is whenever I try to either Erase format a hard drive using my usb2 external enclosure, Disk Util just kinda freaks, not really doing anything, and after a minute or so becomes the program becomes unresponsive. Luckily the rest of my system keeps on working, and I can just force quite disk util. But when I try to shutdown/restart my system I'm forced to do a hard power down.
    I've tried leaving Disk Util running overnight, thinking it was just needing a little extra time to get thru the process, but nothing changed when I woke. And a gave the macbook a good hour to shutdown cleanly, but it stays stuck with the blue screen and the spinning gray wheel at the very end of teh shutdown cycle.
    Looking at the disk util log (after force quiting and restarting the util) it will simply say:
    Aug 12 03:24:09: Disk Utility started.
    Preparing to erase : “Mb”
    Creating Partition Map
    Aug 12 03:25:50: Disk Utility started.
    I've also tried running disk util off the osx install cd (tiger 10.4.6), but i get what seems to be identical behavior, and i have to manually turn off the macbook.
    I've tried this with two hard drives with identical results. In Windows (boot camp) im able to format the partition fine, but it only does ntfs because of the drive's size (and I'm not trying to use a windows fs anyway).
    I plugged the usb hd into a powerbook, and used a 10.4.0 retail cd to run disk util (no hd in the powerbook) and its able to erase/partition the disks just fine. I can then plug them back into the macbook and theyre recognized just fine. But its PPC system and doesnt offer for gtp partitioning which I'm thinking will be a problem because ultimately I'm trying to use this drive to do bootable backups of my macbook.
    I'd like to figure out what is wrong with Disk Util. But even if i get the partitioning working, i have the larger problem of -how- to backup the macbook's hd onto an identical sized hd (80 gigs), that will make both osx and windows bootable backups that I can restore off of.
    One thought was to use the unix utility dd, and just do a bitwise copy of one disk to another. Any idea if this would work?
    Another option would be manually creating the partitions myself, and then backing up each of the drives seperately. Not sure if I could even make a bootable backup of windows from within osx.
    I know I'm not the only one running boot camp and looking to have reliable backups. What are other people doing to address this issue.
    Ideally I would like to find a solution that:
    *creates an identical disk with two bootable partitions
    *can be automated, or at best a few simple steps that can be done once and then walked away from

    Get the Tiger install disks, not the upgrade over Panther disks and first DU Erase w/zero option the original drive. Install Tiger and grab your data from the Panther clone over time.
    When finished, erase Panther clone and clone Tiger boot to it as a backup/alternate boot method."
    Anyway, I have now (after way too long) had occassion to re-boot my computer for good - I have two internals, I zero-ed one of them and installed Tiger from scratch, and have been using it now as if it were a new computer (always a good feeling!) but now I still have that problem, and more - Disk Utility freezes on boot, or rather, it just keeps spinning as if it were scanning the disks. Now, also; when I try to open a disk image, DiskImageMounter utility freezes on 'Attaching' or rather, again, just keeps going - not a literal visual freeze... Now I've been using toast, but that's rather annoying to have to launch, and I defiantly need Disk Utility regardless of DMGs.
    Any ideas? This G5 has had problems with anything relating to files/drives for a while, this particular one never goes away no matter if I have a fresh install or what, so if it's a hardware problem, is there any way I can fix it myself?

    #3 run Memtest when possible
    #4 check cables (again)
    #5 Tiger is now out on DVD with 10.4.6 - updated and easier to upgrade
    #6 boot into Single User Mode and run fsck after ANY freeze or hard restart
    #6 install and use Applejack
    #7 Repair Permissions
    #8 boot into Single User Mode
    A corrupt directory will prevent even booting from a CD/DVD if too severe.
    A corrupt journal file is impossible to then fix
    Disk Warrior (3.03)can't even fix it then, or TechTool Pro (4.1.2)
    - you may need to unplug your hard drive(s) if they are corrupt or damaged.
    Not all SATA drives are compatible though a year ago most were.
    Drives don't require an extension driver, but may require a controller with current firmware. most people would strip a system to basics when troubleshooting. Controllers can also require drivers, too (Sonnet, ACard, ATTO, etc).

    Might want to shop for a FW800 drive & case from someone.

    Files from your laptop should probably NOT be migrated, and definitely not the system. Also, never use older versions of Disk utility from say Panther on a Tiger system. Apple has a number of excellent articles on Disk Utility, fsck and the above.
    MacFixit has a good (long, 5 part) tutorial on corrupt prefs, and Ted Landau has an excellent book on troubleshooting as well. Books on Mac OS X

    Also, things rarely "fix themselves" but rather the problem just gets buried, over-written. The best thing to do along with running fsck is to invoke Applejack and delete all those cache files and folders and swap files, which is where most of the file corruption is likely to occur, and that is just two of the 5 functions of Applejack, repairing permissions and repair disk (why when you probably ran fsck first) as well as look for corrupt plist (prefs).
    Set aside a 10GB partition for Emergency OS X only, that you can use to repair and test your other drives and partitions. Maybe on FW drive.

  • Restoring .dmg image from external to Mac HD in Disk Utility: "Unable to scan image (Input/output error)"

    Hi guys,
    So I've got a problem with restoring the image backup I did (using Disk Utility) of my 500GB HD on my MBP which was acting weird or maybe even crashed a few months ago. After creating the backup image and putting it on my external device, I installed Mavericks back to see if everything was alright (mainly the HD) and everything seems okay.
    I did try restoring the backup image through disk utility before installing mavericks (thus erasing everything again on the HD) AND after. But nothing..
    The whole process starts fine and then it starts scanning the image when after maybe a good 10-15min in I get a message that says that it was unable to scan the image. I tried verifying the disk(s), everything came out "OK". Also tried scanning it through Images > Scan image for Restore... with the same results.
    While searching I've seen people getting messages like "Unable to scan filename.dmg (Invalid argument)" and "Unable to scan filename.dmg
    (Internal error)" but none have (Input/output error)
    The screen grab is below.
    I also came across something about using terminal/commands but I'm not that savvy with it, especially considering that those there had issues with either mounting or trouble finding the image.
    I've also tried moving the backup image to a different external device 2TB and also the desktop because I read it may have to do with the format of the externals or maybe free space. But THEN I would get a message saying
    "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Mac HD Backup.dmg" can't be read or written. Error code -36"
    Fyi ALL my externals are HFS+/Journaled and the backup image format was compressed.
    I REALLY don't know what to do next. Was it the wrong move to create a dmg image? Have I lost everything? Is there still a way out?

    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
    Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
    If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
    Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
    Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
    *An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Unable to create an encrypted disk image with Disk Utility

    Hi:
    With our upgrade to Lion a few weeks ago, we're now unable to create an encrypted disk image of any type using Disk Utility any more. This problem occurs on 3 different machines, and is reproducible whether one is using an internal HD or an external FW HD. We can successfully create nonencrypted disk images.

    We haven't had any luck with a solution trying various permissions fixes as helpfully suggested by other readers in response to the error message # (-60008 error), so I'm hoping that someone else has run across a solution from the encrypted disk image perspective and that this tag line will generate some help.

  • Trying to install/format an INTERNAL hard drive using Disk Utility gives me "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device".   Is that a hardware problem and what could be done about it?

    My Mac is a late 2009 model and the current hard drive recently failed. So I bought a new one, exactly the same, albeit 750gb instead of 500gb. The HDD is a Seagate Momentus 7200. Before the my current drive failed I made a time machine back up to an external USB HDD. I've inserted the HDD into the bottom of my Mac, plugged in the USB and started my machine pressing the 'Option' ([ALT]) key. I go into Disk Utility to try and format the new HDD by creating a new partition but I keep getting the messages,
    "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device"
    or
    "POSIX: could not allocate memory"
    This is actaully the third HDD I've tried. The first was another Seagate Momentus 7200 500gb, but this time it was a newer model (model number ended in 423AS instead of 420AS - the new one I am trying ends with 420AS, which is the same as the current HDD). I then tried a Western Digital drive but that one didn't even show up in DU. Forums and tech support are suggesting it's faults with the HDDs but surely not three in a row?
    Could this be an issue with another part of my Mac?
    Is there anything else I can do to format the HDD, have I missed a crucial step?

    Did you ever get a resolution to this issue?
    I am having that exact error with a new 512GB SSD from Crucial, in a 15" MBP mid-2010.
    I really wonder now if the stupid SATA cable could be bad - causing the initial SSD fail.  I am replacing it with the EXACT same drive, and getting that "last block" error when i partition in the GUI or from command-line.

  • HT3275 I continue to get the following error message: Unable to complete back up.an error occurred while creating backup folder. It's a brand new drive. When I attempt to repair it using disk utility I get:unable to repair disk cannot unmounted

    I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup.An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.

    I have confused myself with the facts!  Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here.  First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question.  Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option.  Then powered down the computerator.
    Next started up computerator.  Turned Time Machine ON  and experienced multiple successful backups!  Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far).  Had a few more successes.  After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK.  This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
    Put computer to sleep for the night.  Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD!   Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
    Did a few    Sleep-bad, Restart -OK    repetitions.
    It seems consistent:  Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.
    =============================
    Now then, I don't understand everything I know here.  Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier).  Is there any truth in this?
    I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible.  What's out there that we know works reliably for us?

    I've tried three times in order to create a restore image of the users' volume of my Powerbook. I followed exactly the procedure explained typing "man asr" in a terminal window. I booted the Powerbook in target disk mode while connected to my iMac G5 from which Disk utility was run. Every time the disk image creation failed with a log report like this:

    Initializing...

    could not access /Volumes/HOME_HD/./Users/delos/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/David Bowie/The Best Of David Bowie 1974-1979/01 Sound And Vision.m4a - Input/output error
    Finishing...
    Unable to create “HOME_HD” - Input/output error.
    I don't know how my imported music could create such a problem to Disk utility, nevertheless I removed the incriminated song from the Music library but another one raised to be not accessible. Then I booted the powerbook from the supplied Tiger DVD too, and I got an error over the music file, something about an allocation that was 190 instead of 1, I got the volume repaired from Disk utility but the Disk image creation failed again without any hint because booting from DVD does not allow to save log file anywhere. Why on Earth I can't manage such a critical task as back up under Tiger while using Panther everything worked like a charm following the same procedure? Is anyone experiencing something similar?

    Hi Lee, thank you for your answer, indeed I've just read carefully your article few hours ago, while I googled the net to find some hints on my issue. I think that I've followed exactly the right procedure to make the back up image, and can't find what is wrong. Actually Disk utility Repair disk successfully repaired the allocation bit (whatever that means) of the music files but that wasn't enough to let the creation of the disk image. Quite odd that the music files where recognized as messed up by Disk utility only booting from Tiger DVD and not while the Powerbook was connected to an iMac running Tiger too.
    I'll do further investigation during weekend.
