Unable to locate files message

Everytime I update iTunes, I lose the ability to play 1/2 the songs from my playlist. Instead I get a message saying that the songs cannot be playsed because the files cannot be located...THIS *****!

The exclamation mark for missing files is shown if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. Changing the path to the media folder won't fix the links to files you've moved by hand.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then say no when asked to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps and locate the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. I would suggest you untick Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media folder organized before you start so that things don't have to move around as they are repaired.

  • New windows unable to locate file (music) while external HD is plugged in?

My computer was recently updated from XP to newer version of windows. My itunes acct no longer identifies or locates the music in my external HD.  With the exception of my ituens purchases, my personnel music are listed as only files in my itunes acct.  When I click on the song (file) it states unable to locate file even though my External HD with the music is plugged into the computer.  Any help would be appreciated...

    Hello 16to87,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains advice on locating your iTunes library:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
Create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of these screens:
If you don't see one of the screens above, you may want to try again. Remember to hold down the Option key if you're using a Mac or the Shift key if you're using Windows.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • Frequent "unable to sync files" message

I use Creative Cloud to store all my project files.  While working, I frequently get the popup message "Unable to sync ...." whatever project file I'm currently working on.  This happens about 20 times per day, so it's a little annoying.  Eventually it always gets synced, just a little late I guess.  It's not a one-time maintenance thing, as this has been happening every day for the past couple of weeks.

I have emailed you about resolving this issue.

  • Missing links-Itunes unable to locate files after having ext HD unplugged

I have my music in different folders on my laptop, some on the internal hard drive, and most on my external hard drive (labeled drive F). I recently went out of town and didn't bring my external HD, and while I was gone I used my laptop to play songs and burn CDs from the folders I have on the internal hard drive (drive D). Now I got back home and plugged my external HD back in, and every time I try to play a song on that drive, I get the message "The song "_" could not be located because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I can go and locate each song individually exactly where it was before, but I have way too many songs to do this. When I hit "Get Info" for one of these missing songs, at the bottom next to "Where," the filename starts with "file://localhost/G:/MP3 Library/etc." It should be "F://MP3 Library/etc." Is there a way for me to get Itunes to locate these files without going through them individually? I don't even have a drive G on my computer. If I changed my external HD's label from F to G, would that help? I have no idea what to do and I don't want to lose all of my playlists that I have made over the years. I also do not want to consolidate my music/folders into one Itunes library folder.

likely your ext hd used to be G and when you had it unplugged for a while your computer gave it the F drive when you plugged it back in. therefore the path was broken
So yes, changing it back to the G drive SHOULD fix it.

  • Media Encoder 4.1 - unable to locate files

After I export a sequence into  media encoder and hit the start button. I get a a notice that it can't locate the files.  I get the same results with both of my computers. If I put files in the media encoder it works great.  In cs3 I could render seqs out to a movie without any problems.  Thanks for any help.
    I use XP and Vista

  • Unable to locate file

After a clean install of Snow Leopard, I migrated my applications and data from Time machine. My settings and applications seamlessly transferred, but all of the data associated with the applications has not been transferred. In particular, virtually none of my thousands of photos from iphoto transferred. I can find a photo here and there on the time machine drive, but not the folder containing all of the photos. Ditto for all of my passwords which I use for business, etc. All of my Word documents have also vanished. It is as though the applications were backed up but not any of the associated data. Would appreciate help!

please clarify how you migrated. did you migrate during the original computer setup after doing a reinstall? or did you set up an account and then used migration assistant? in the latter case you need to log out of the current account and log into the migrated account and all your data should be there.

  • Most songs come up with a message "unable to locate original file".What's that about and how do I fix it?

In my library, many listed songs, when activated to play, give a message "unable to locate file, do you want us to search for it?". If you say yes, it never finds it, as it the songs are gone. Any thoughts on what's going on?

  • Unable to locate timecode in batch capture

Hi there, I have been working on this problem for a while and would really appreciate some help.
I have a documentary project I have been working on for some time and have completed the EDL. I am now trying to batch capture the footage again in full res and am having problems with a couple of the tapes.
    First the specs:
The video was shot on a Sony HDR-HC1 in HDV(1080) mode.
I am using this camera to capture the footage.
I am trying to recapture the footage in a sequence with the easy setting on HDV1080i50.
I had originally captured the footage in SD on an older version of final cut pro (I am now working with FCP6) and didn't realise that my 16:9 footage was actually all 4:3 letterboxed. To fix this problem I used the media manager to export and then in the new project batch capture all the footage again from the tape. The project uses 18 tapes, 16 of which were batch digitised with only minor troubleshooting required. However 2 of the tapes are proving to be very problematic. It seems that whatever clip I select on the tape it gives me a message saying "unable to locate timecode".
I have tried setting the tape to the exact location of the clip before selecting the batch capture, but the computer always seems to look for a spot which is 2-3 mins out of sync with the clip. For example, if the in point is 00:10:00:00 the computer will roll the tape to around the 00:12:00:00 mark and start jogging around there for about 30 seconds until eventually giving me the "unable to locate timecode" message. Looking in the information in the bins, the in and out points are accurate, its just that when I try to capture, the computer rolls the tape to the wrong position.
If anyone knows a workaround for this that will help me avoid having to edit the footage all over again I will be extremely grateful.
    Thanks
    Liam

HI I have the same problem, the capture window says: Waiting for time code, the device must set in vcr mode and then This operation could not be complete as there is no video, the F!#!%$$ problem is very illogical ,at this mooring I do batch capture without a problem but since the second tape this problem starting, I update to FCP 6.0.4 and,. @@#%#@%#$ the first tape capture but the second not capture and the problem starting againd, note that IMOVIE capture the tape and work very well, iI replace fire wire, camera VCR and , I trayu with Canon, Sony, JVC and the problem persist , I have quicktime 7.4.5, FCO 6.0.4, note that I have two Macs with the same problem in both macs IMOVIE work like a PRO edition Software but FCP is very bad, I have with this problem a long time, I formated Mac, reinstall FCS2 many timers and the problem persist. IS not a problem whit easy setup or wherever , I download the FireWire SDK from Apple and test all connection with the applications of sdk and in all case , the camera and the fire wire are OK, the problem is with quicktime and FCP, If any one is working OK with FCP and DV NTSC devices and JVC PRO HD devices, please tell us HOW DO. I'm working with FCP since 2000 and in this month FCP makes me very UNHAPPY.

  • G5 Crashes on Install - Log says Unable to Locate Handle 30

I am getting repeated "Unable to locate handle" messages during install. Sometimes it will stall for a while, but eventually it crashes.
I was able to install Leopard on my original internal drive, but NOT on my Western Digital 500GB drive (which I use as my boot drive in Tiger - wherever Tiger is now that the installer has had it's way with it!

In case your User home directory is mapped to any network location try changing it temporarily to default location on your local machine and then run the installer.
If it still fails try creating a new user account and then run the installer from new user account.

  • Multi-room DVR Issues: Unable to locate hub, interrupted recording, skipping during playback

    Hi Guys,
I was wonderng if you could help me.   I have been a FIOS customer for many years and have a multi-room HD DVR and 2 HD set-top boxes.   I have always had some problems during playback on some recordings where the picture and sound will skip, but over the last several months some new problems have appeared.  Frequently during playback of recorded shows the recording will stop playing and I will get a message on the screen "unable to locate hub".  I then have to power off the STB, reboot and when I go to the dvr option I have to refresh the devices before connecting to the dvr again.  If this happens while a show is recording then the recording stops and then restarts causing the show to be split into 2 recordings.  Sometimes I get a message "You have reached maximum playback on DVR".  This really frustrating and I would like these issues resolved.   I have the older HD dvr, 1 new hd set-top box, and 1 old hd stb.   The playback issues happen on both hd stbs.  We don't usually watch shows on the dvr itself so I am not sure how it performs during playback.  1 other note that might help troubleshooting is that I can't seem to display the IMG in full screen on the dvr.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Sincerely,
    Randy R.

You can only do 1 playback at a time UNLESS you are playing back from the DVR/HUB.  If you want to do 2 simultaneous play backs, one of them must be from the DVR.  I ran into this same message when my wife would watch a recorded program in one room and I would try to watch a recorded program in another room.  Fixed it by moving the DVR to one of the rooms where the conflict occured most often.  As for the "unable to locate hub" message.  This was a very common problem about a year ago, which was fixed with a software update. You need to check what version software is on all your boxes.

  • Unable to locate server even though wireless is connected.

    Greetings All
I've been having an odd issue with my wrt54G.   My wife and I have 2 laptops wirelessly connected to the router (win xp media certer ver and win xp home ver).
In addition we have 3 win 98 boxes and 1 notebook using xp tablet edition all of which use ethernet.
Periodically both of our notebooks that are wirelessly connected will periodically give an "unable to locate server" message when when using IE6.  I tried Firefox also to attempt to narrow it down and the same problem is present.  Oddly though both notebooks still have our wireless signal connected.  I have proxy and both firewalls (xp and symantec) off on these 2 notebooks.  They connect using wpa-tkip with mac filtration off ssid broadcast off.   Usually we can cold boot our laptops and get reconnected again although sometimes it will happen again almost immediately.  I can't remember if we are able to browse network drives (using our wireless notebooks) when this happens.  None of our ethernet connected pc's have this problem when this is going on.
I have rebooted the cable modem and the wrt54g and this doesn't seem to matter.
My firmware version is v3.03.6, Jan. 6, 2005v3.03.6.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Okay the problem has resurfaced. When this is happening (no web access, no nntp access) I am still able to ping websites that I am unable to open in IE or Mozilla. Also I am still able to listen on streaming audio during these times of no web access. I am also unable to connect to my router's config page while this is happening.
While web access is being denied I am still able to connect to other pc's on my home network.
I'm beginning to think that there must be some kind of http, https and NNTP traffic during certain times but I cannot find anything obvious in my router's setting via the web tool.
This baffles me. I am inclined to to think it's something other than just http and nntp traffic that's being stopped. The reason I say this is because I have had to reboot again following and initial reboot that restored web access and then denied it again in just a matter minutes.
Maybe my router is croaking out?
    Thanks

That DLL is part of your printer driver; reinstall or update the device driver for your printer, and the message should go away.

  • HT1349 I am trying to burn music to a CD - message says:  unable to locate the original file and will not burn the playlist.  Is there a setting that I must change.  ?

I am trying to burn music to a CD-R-  message says:  unable to locate the original file.   Music is on the iTunes program but will not play or burn.  Is there something I should change to be able to burn to CD?

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library
