Unable to login to Lion... Password accepted, white screen, returns to login screen...

Hi All
Wonder if anyone has the same issue (and hopefully resolved!)...
1. iMac 24" boots up fine to login screen
2. There appears to be a guest user account (cant remember that being there before - possible irrelvent)
3. If I click on my user account and enter an incorrect password, screen shakes as per normal behaviour.
4. If I click on my user account and enter the correct password... whole screen goes white/grey
5. Goes back to login window
Ive /tried/ safe mode using shift after 'ping' but doesnt seem to enter safe mode
Please help... I'm completely stuck!!
Many thanks

nb: I fairly sure this started after doing a software update...

  • 10.7 (Lion) Password accepted but can't log in

Late 2009 MacBook Air. The problem I describe happened shortly after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion with all the latest updates. It's been running smoothly untill this morning.
    1. At "choose account" log-in screen, when I choose ANY of the regular user accounts, OS X accepts the password, then loads a gray screen, and a few seconds later goes back to the "choose account" log-in screen.
    2. I am not entering the wrong password. OS X still gives the shaking password box when I enter the wrong password. That's not what's happening here.
    3. I can log in to the guest account. It's the only was I can get past the log-in screen.
Any idea what's happening or know of a solution? I've tried:
    1. Resetting PRAM.
    2. Also tried login from Safe Mode.
    3. And using disk utility (found no problems what so ever).
    4. Resetting the password (http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Reset-Mac-OS-X-Account-Passwords-214330.sh tml)
    Still no luck.
My apologies if this has been answered before. I couldn't find any references to this precise log-in problem.
    Thanks for any advice.

Update: I am back and running. How I made my corrupted account's files accessible to my new profile account can be found here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20798613#20798613
Summary of my attempts and solution:
Actions that didn't fix login problem:
    Reset PRAM several times
Safe Boot (power on + left shift key). Problem still exists.
Disk Utility (Verify and repaired permissions. Verified disk - no problems)
Checked disk “The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK”.
    Repaired disk. Problem still exists.
    Recovery partition (Power + option)
Tried login while holding shift key down
    Reloaded OS X
    My Solution:
    Create new account:
Shut down, and power on holding Apple and S (cmd -s).
Type the following lines followed by return, without the dollar sign:
    $ mount -uw /
    $ rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    $ exit
        2. Moved corrupted user’s data to new user account by FireWire Target Disk Mode

  • Config Tool - Login name and password

    Hi,
When I Launch the Config tool, it normally connect to the database directly without prompting for login name and password. Where does it get login information from and where does it store these information.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Vince

It always runs on the local machine where you Java stack is installed and connects to the default database schema (Java). You can look at the config.properties file under C:\usr\sap\J2E\JC00\j2ee\configtool for details

  • Lion Server, Users login to Lion Box and Snow Box. EXPERIENCES...

    OK so,
In this early doors Lion days, has anyone experimented with dual OS environments at all yet.
    Has anyone got any Pros/Cons!
Any issues or is all swimmingly.
My users use iCloud, is there an order I should login, I am guessing that users should login to Lion Box, sign in with iCloud then login to Snow Box. Not sure what issues this will throw up but it'd be good to know i'm not alone in this scenario.
I am setting up a sandbox myself so will report back with any findings that I can.
Would be good to keep this thread going with anyones experiences
    Cheers

    Austin,
I'm currently using OpenLDAP 2.4 so I am considering to downgrade. I'm not using RFC 2307 mappings but a custom mapping extending the RFC 2307 mappings with apple specific attributes like apple-mcxflags. (I'm using a apple.schema)
In my GitHub repository I'm implementing a method to automagically install OpenLDAP on Ubuntu for Apple clients so I can install this within 5 minutes since I became crazy entering the commands every time trying to get my clients to bind. Did all this before Lion came out so I updated some clients and they now refuse to login.
I will extend the script with the removal of the supported SASL mechanisms so the stuff in the article isn't necessary anymore.
Are your Lion clients able to complete the login cycle (authenticate, mount homedir) with your OpenLDAP 2.3 setup?
Also, how do your automount entry's look? Can you post the one with the home directories? Curious if it might be related to me changing the mount points.

  • Unable to login when change password option is enabled

    Hi,
I have configured remote vpn on my Cisco ASA and users connecting to this will use Cisco VPN dialer and gets authenticated with the Windows 2008 domain controller credentials. Now the problem I face is, when i set the option for user-A as "user must change the password during next login" it doesn't accept , it accepts only when I uncheck only then the user-A will be able to login.
Any ideas what option or configuration do I to do so that it can popoup for changing the password?
FYI I use windows 7 profession edition with Cisco VPN dialer client ver. 5.0.04.0300. I am unable to find "windows logon properties" under the "options" menu.

    Hi,
I managed to get the password change option pop-up when "Change password during next login" set for for the user-A in windows 2008 Active Directory. But now the issue is, I enter the old password, it accepts & then its pops up to enter me the new password twice, when I enter the new password with some special charecters it stills pops me up to enter the new password with special charecters. After 2-3 attempts it disconnects. It will allow me to connect only when I un-check the "change password during next login"
    Any ideas?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • I need help with resetting my ichat. When i try to login now it wont let me... it says "AOL Instant Messenger password" and then "iChat can't log in to ... because your login ID or password is incorrect. How do I reset this if I cant log in?

I need help with resetting my ichat. When i try to login now it wont let me... it says "AOL Instant Messenger password" and then "iChat can't log in to ... because your login ID or password is incorrect. How do I reset this if I cant log in? When I try to press online the same thing pops up and I have no way of logging in or asking for help.

    Hi,
iChat (it would help to know which version) can accept Apple IDs as valid AIM Screen Names.
However if you have iChat 5 or earlier you cannot use ones ending in @me.com or @icloud.com issued by iCloud. (they can be used in iChat 6 or Messages as these versions make a double login to AIM and Apple to allow the use of the password).
In addition if you are using an Apple ID for an AIM Screen Name the password still needs to keep to the 16 character limit that AIM has.
AN @mac.com name can be used on any version of iChat  (Until the 30th June 2014)
As it does not need a double check with Apple you can use it to log in to the AIM Web pages
Login here with an AIM Name registered at AIM or and @mac.com name and see if you get any suspended account messages.
Sometimes account can be suspended. Usually because something has triggered the "Unusual Activity" item.
About a year ago many @mac.com users that travelled out of their own country found themselves suspended when they got home.
If the Name checks out of if an Apple ID the password in known to be 16 characters or Less then do this:-
In Lion upwards open a Finder Window and use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.
Select the Library that appears in the menu list.
    Navigate to Preferences.
(If you have version earlier than Lion the just navigate to ~/Library/Preferences (that's the Library in you Home - Little House icon - folder)
Fnd com.apple.ichat.aim.plist (even if you are using Messages)
Drag the file to the Trash and Restart the app.

    Hi,
The Little I do know about setting up iChat server as  it was called in earlier versions was that it needed something called reverse DNS to be correctly sorted.
I have looked for some in the Lion Server Community

  • Unable to set a new password

    Hi,
I have some issues with my password.
I can enter my keylock password, but I am unable to enter my USER password. When I am asked to recreate it (creating a new one), it will not accepted.
I have the window open, where you are prompted to enter the new PW
    I enter it.
    I re-enter it,
and set some hint for it.
But whatever I enter, it will not be accepted (window shaking).
    What´s wrong?
    Thx
    Mark

If you have another Admin account, you can reset the password from that account.
Or, you can reset a user password by booting the install DVD. After selecting the Language, you can get to the Utilities menu. There is a Password reset utility in there.
Note that neither will not change the keychain password. You'll have to change that separately afterward if you want it to be the same. Is that what you meant by "keylock?"

  • Login ID and Password

Okay - so I am very new at this -
I recently bought an iBook G4 - and yesterday bought an iSight - and so today I opened iChat for the first time and set it up (or so I thought).
I have MSN messenger on my computer -which I have been using to chat.
Now - when i log into Ichat it asks for my Login ID and password - and everytime I go to put it in it says that iChat was unable to login to AOL Instant Messenger because my screen name or password was incorrect.
Well as far as I know - no it's not...but how can I find out what these two things are?
    Please help.
    Lara

    Hi Lara,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
Following on from Sandra's good advice. (I read it the same way).
This page explains how to set up an AIM or @mac name as your account name. http://www.siriusaddict.com/ichat.html
The Jabber side of iChat can connect to the MSN service but will require you get a Jabber name from one of these Public Servers
How to set this side is described here at Jabber.org.au.
The finer points of linking to the MSN or other IM services is explained Here at the AllForces Blog
    Just summarise the Jabber side.
You need a Jabber name created at one of the Public Server.
Based on the need for a Server that has a MSN Transport. See the All Forces Blog.
The Jabber.org.au site tells you how to go about getting a name and setting up iChat - the AllForces Blog tells you how to set up the Transports.
You will find that you have first to download and use anouter Jabber client to actually create a Jabber account somewhere as iChat can not do this yet.
If you were looking to Video chat to MSN Buddies then iChat can not do this. In fact MSN for Macs can not do this either (Good Old Microsoft).
There are two Open Source MSN clones that can.
aMSN Although there are some reports that the Audio side of this is hit and miss.
    Mercury is another.
Hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

  • Help - Login Names and Passwords Disappear

I recently encountered a problem while using Safari. As I usually do, I accessed a website where I have to enter a login name and password, like this one. When I click "submit" or press "enter" both the name and password simply disappear. I retype the information, and again its gone when I press "enter." This happens on every site that requires a login name and password, including this site. I am using Firefox in order to access this site and post this thread.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how to fix this? Safari is my preferred browswer.

    Dennis
Thank you for your reply. I solved my problem. Many sites requiring a login name and password, including Apple Discussions, also require that you allow them to set cookies in your system. I had set Safari Preferences > Security to never accept cookies. Apparently, doing this prevents these websites from accepting any login name or password you enter. Resetting Preferences > Security to accept cookies again allows me to use a login name and password.

  • No startup sound and white background in the login screen

I realized that the startup sound (Mountain Lion) disappeared when I reboot, and the login screen is white now, instead of the gray usual one. Further, I think is slower then it was usually in the past. Has anyone an idea how I could solve this problem?

This the file you want to look for:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/LoginUIKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Log inUICore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/appleLinen.png
Changing this file will give you a new background. If you use a full size image, rather than a tiled one, make sure you leave transparent areas in the PNG file to permit use of the dialog buttons. Took me a bit of tweaking to get a good background I use. Be prepared to have to repeat the process every time you do a version update to the OS, as the appleLinen.png is often refreshed in updates.
make sure you follow all good practices. Make backups and only make tiny incremental changes until you are satisfied with the results. Not reccomended for novices.

Your target installation drive most likely has a Time Machine folder or Time Machine boot picker file still on it that are blocking the installation. These will need to be gone before the installation process will proceed.
Look for these on the root of the target installation disk:
    /Backups.backupdb
    /tmbootpicker.efi
    and maybe:
    /.apdisk
