Unable to lower brightness to below 95% in GNOME 3 using Fn keys
Hello,
I just installed GNOME 3 and this is a relatively fresh Arch install. I am using a ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
The problem I am having is that, the Fn+F8, Fn+F9 brightness control keys are not having significant effects. When I press Fn+F8, the GNOME shell brightness OSD does appear, and the bar does go down a bit, but it won't go anywhere lower even if I keep pressing Fn+F8. And when I run
[jiehan@tpx1c ~]$ /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --get-brightness
95
It is always 95. Using Fn+F9 to raise the brightness, I am able to get 100.
This is very awkward. I want to be able to set my brightness to something lower than 95 using keyboard shortcuts!
However, I am able to lower the brightness to < 95 by issuing the following, and it works:
[jiehan@tpx1c ~]$ sudo /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 50
[sudo] password for jiehan:

Same problem for me. Really a pain in the *** this bug ! Does Apple fixed it. I'm really suprised noone reports this problem and apple does not adress this.
Because of that, I cannot give it anymore to children because it hurts the view. Really a shame on the part of apple !

Screen flicker at low brightness
Hi all
I have a macbook pro unibody 15" and I seem to be getting a screen flicker at low brightness settings.
I used to have a macbook and it never did this.
Is this normal and if not, is there anything that I can do about it?

I was going to suggest having it checked for the NVIDIA issue, but you state you have a unibody. If you have a new unibody, you would be best served if you posted in that forum (this area is for the Original MBP). Good luck. -
Unable to control brightness in target display mode
I use my 27" mid2010 iMac as a display for my MacPro. However after the Mac OS X recent update to 10.6.8, I noticed I am unable to control the screen brightness. Usually, I was able to do so using the iMac keyboard to adjust brightness etc. but now they do not respond in Target Display Mode. The brightness adjustment do respond if I am using the iMac but not anymore in Target Display Mode. This is a little frustrating as the screen is really bright and is hurting my eyes.
Same here. Late 2009 iMac 27". This must be a bug. (Apple: please fix this, thanks!)
As a temporary solution I installed one of the brightness control apps you can find in the App store.
I used Midnight from Ollix, searching for 'brightness' in the app store reveals some more.
<note: controlling brightness this way affects colors and is no REAL fix, just makes your eyes hurt less until the bug is fixed> -
IPHONE SCREEN ON PERMANENT LOW BRIGHTNESS
My iphone 3GS is on permanent low brightness. like the lowest it can go. i have turned it up to full but it stays on the lowest?
it was working normally but the screen was flickering and then it shut down to the lowest brightness even though the little brightness meter is on full.
and my cameras not working either
any suggestions on what i should do?

IMac, low brightness, sound buzz
Hi, i'm italian mac user, and i bought my imac ( 27" i7 1 Tb HDD 4 Gb Ram) last week, and other user tell me to try to make low brightness in my mac and effectively if i make the brightness to low i feel buzz on foundation. The problems is only low brightness, it's normal ?
It's a hardware or software problem ?
There are other user that have this problem ?

I can confirm this on my late iMac 27" i7.
The buzzing is actually the fan from what I can venture to guess. The buzzing is on the top left near the edge of the vent and is present when the CPU load is rather high for extended periods.
As others are describing, the noise is less noticeable when the screen is at full brightness vs being at the dimmest setting. If it is a fan issue, then perhaps at full brightness there is a voltage drop to the fan; which would indicate that the power supply may just be adequate.
Regardless, it is most annoying - and this is after it had replaced a new 17" unibody macbook pro (core2duo 3Ghz) which destroyed three replacement power supplies. Under heavy load in the macbook pro laptop would actually drain the battery while it had AC power. The "dead" power supply bricks would only push out ~48watts compared when brand-new when it would push out 70-80watts.
Product looks good but doesn't deliver quality .... really disappointed.
With the iMac 27" - other issues are:
The latest Bootcamp (3.1) update which had alleged Windows 7 support forced the ATI graphics driver to render in 16bit mode (did a driver rollback to revert to 32bit color).
The screen never goes in power saving mode within Windows ... never.
My MightyMouse has already burnt through 6 AA batteries in 2 months. -

I notice there's this minor flickering problem at low brightness, is this normal?
It seems like it's a known issue after I researched about it.
Is it a hardware problem or a software problem?
Should I exchange it?

My 5800, bought last January, presented the well known stripes-on-the-screen problem. I've got it repaired in a Nokia care point but the new display has a lower brightness, yellowish tones and uneven luminosity (darker in the very top section, lighter in the bottom area). I've noticed these changes at the first power-on after the repair but, to be sure, I've put it side-by-side with another 5800 I had and the first impression has been confirmed. I suspect the display has been replaced with a refurbished or a defective one.
I've asked the Nokia care point to get me a good-enough display, leaving again my 5800. They've called me back after 6 hours telling that the screen had been changed again (I don't believe them) but the situation was exactly the same because:
"the most recent 5800 displays act like this; they are all the same and less bright than the ones used by Nokia before".
This would be the first time display technology evolves toward lower quality. Is there anybody who can confirm or deny the Nokia carepoint thesis? Any suggestion on how I can get an equal or better 5800 after the in-warranty repair? Thanks a lot. AntonioConfirmed by another Nokia point. The new 5800 displays are less bright than the previous ones, may be for longer battery use. This is a shame for a full display phone that I use also as a navigator. My next one will not be a Nokia, for sure.

I've uploaded Acrobat XI Pro and it freezes when I'm using it. I uninstalled and re-installed. When I login, it says that it is unable to validate the account and has an option to use the trial. How do I fix this?

PDF: Unable to print a document as PDF from APEX when using the BI Publishe

From an APEX application, I am unable to print a document in a PDF format when using the Oracle BI Publisher.\
Here is the configuration:
1) Server A is W2K3 and hosts the Oracle BI Publisher server, with IP address ip01.
2) Server B is a OEL5.2 and hosts the database server of the APEX application, with IP address ip02.
3) Machine C is a W7 desktop from which through an URL both the APEX applicationn and the BI server are accessed, with IP address ip03.
4) The APEX application is configured with the following to use the Oracle BI Publisher:
- Printer server: Advanced (requires Oracle BI Publisher)
- Printer server protocol: HTTP
- Printer server host address: ip01
- Printer server port: 9704
- Printer server script: /xmlpserver/convert
- Network services are enabled (at least I did get any warning/error message)
From C, I access the the APEX application through its URL, if I try to download a page by selecting PDF in the download section of the interative report section for that page, I am unable to open if and get the error:
<file>. pdf file can not be opened because the file type is not supported or because it is damaged (because, for example as an e-mail attachment is not sent and correctly decoded)
Yet, still from C, I am able to open any other PDF document.
The same way, still from C, acessing the APEX application through its URL, I have a query report defined with a PDF output format. Then, when I test the report (Test Report in the Report query) for that query, I get the error:
ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.
At first sight this could be a wong entry in the priinter configuration for APEX. But with this address, through the URL I can log in to the Oracle BI Publisher server.
Does someone has an idea what the problem could be?

Don't go via PostScript or Acrobat Distiller, which are old deprecated technology.
You use:
Menu > File > Print > PDF (button bottom left) > Save as PDF…

I want to transfer MIC Result recording to Batch class.
For that, i am trying to create MIC & giving class characteristic name in QS21, and then under control data, I am unable to select, Quantitative. By default system is selecting Qualitative. But I want to create that MIC as Quantitative.
Is there any setting for this?

Dbms_crypto - avoid error when using different key in lower environment
Hello Experts,
We are using Oracle 11.2.0.2. We are planning to implement dbms_crypto to encrypt few columns. We clone the data from production to lower environment ( DEV, QC).
For the lower environments, we do not want to get the sensitive data from production and do not plan to use same key. Rather than getting an error when using differnt key, is it possible to get a different resultset back.
In other words, we want the implementation to be same across environments but want to use a diffent key in lower environment and get different result (or garbage).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
While testing this logic, I am getting following error when using differnt key to decrypt. It works fine if I use same key.
