Unable To Manually Drag & Drop Songs To iPod

I've just installed the latest iTunes v7.0.1.8.
My 4th gen iPod connects fine but I can't view what songs are on it or manually 'drag' songs to it from iTunes.
It shows up in 'Devices' and when I click on it I get a 4 tab option screen (Summary/Music/Podcasts/Contacts) - in Summary I've ticked 'Manually Manage Music', I then click on the 'Music' tab but all I get is a screen showing Sync music and a list of all my different genres. I ticked the sync music box and managed to wipe 3500 songs from my iPod!!
I reinstalled the songs automatically but still can't view them in the Music screen, although I can play them on the iPod via my computer!!
I'm running Windows XP
Please help.

I finally found a page in Apple's support pages that describes exactly this...right after I posted the question. Go figure!
But thank you, Katrina, it definitely helped!

  • ITunes not allowing me to drag/drop songs into iPod Touch

i have a little over 25 gigs of music on my computer. i have space for only 14 gigs of music on my iPod, so i don't want it to sync my library automatically. however, when i try to drag/drop music like i have with my other iPods (this is my third one) it won't let me...it gives me the little symbol like in ghostbusters but without the ghost in the middle, y'know? like i said, i need to upload stuff manually because my Touch doesn't have space enough for my whole library...so what gives??
edit: i have the latest versions of iTunes and the latest iPod software, and i've restarted both my PC and iPod since installing said updates.
edit (again): nevermind, i'm a fool. right there on the iPod homepage there's a box under "options" and i just had to click "manually add songs." so, i answered my own question, holler.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
    *View > Toolbars
    *Right-click empty toolbar area
Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
*check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar

  • New 16GB iTouch - cannot manually drag/drop songs

I just purchased a new 16GB iTouch this past wkd from the Apple store. (As background I have previously owned the 1st generation and latest iPod nanos). After reading some of the posts, I decided not to upgrade the software to v3.0.
I connected the iTouch to my computer, and it is recognized by iTunes. I unchecked any related "automatically sync" features and made sure that "manual sync" was turned on. However, I still cannot seem to "drag and drop" songs from my Music Library to my iTouch; I also cannot "drag and drop" any of my playlists. I have not even tried to bother with my photos. Also, please note, my iTunes works just fine with both of my iPods.
Please help!!! Am I having this problem b/c I am not upgrading the iTouch software to the new version?

roaminggnome - thanks for your quick reply. Apologies, I should have been more specific in my post. So that my songs would not be automatically synched, I had previously checked the box under devices/my ipod/summary/manually manage music" - I also had done so for both of my old iPods.
I already downloaded the manual and read thru a bunch of older posts and I could not find any reference to this "drag/drop" issue.

  • Unable to Manually Drag Songs to iPod

I have updated my ipod to 1.2. When I drag a song to my iPod it tells me it is updating my ipod and not to disconnect. After a few minutes, my ipod tells me that it cannot be updated, the required file cannot be found. Windows gives me a Delayed Write Error. Once I get the error, my ipod is un responsive until I manually reset it. HELP!!
    Thanks!

Have you called Apple? I don't think they follow the discussions much.
              Also, what have you done?
Sometimes, it helps to start fresh -- (as previously suggested):
Restore the iPod - this will erase it.
    Restart your iBook
Open Disk Utility and check your Hard Drive and Repair the permissions
Set iTunes to manual so it will not automatically open when you plug in your iPod
    Plug in the iPod
Check it using Disk Utility or Disk Warrior - Norton will not work with 10.4.2 [Thanks, Symantec]
    Launch iTunes
Try to manually copy from the Library to your iPod.
              Did that work?

  • Can't drag and drop songs to iPod anymore

The new version of iTunes is a bit squirreley. First it said that I had to re-authorize my PC (which I did) and now it only lets me add songs via playlists. Should I go back to the earlier version? And why can't I simply see the music on the iPod via iTunes?

*it only lets me add songs via playlists.*
Check your update settings. Connect your iPod and click on it's icon in the iTunes source list (the narrow pane on the left). This will bring up the preferences tabs in the main pane on the right. The first tab you'll see is Summary, look for "manually manage songs and videos", if there is a check mark there then the iPod is set to update manually and you have to drag songs from the iTunes library to the iPod to load them on. If you want to update automatically you need to remove the check mark from there (I would also remove the "enable disk use" check mark unless you want to use the iPod as a removable storage device) and click the Apply button in the right hand corner:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
    Managing content manually on iPod
*And why can't I simply see the music on the iPod via iTunes?*
Click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song list.

  • CAN'T DRAG & DROP SONGS TO IPHONE

I just bought a new iPhone and I can't drag and drop any of my songs. However, i'm able to drag and drop songs with my 30 gb iPod. Help!!!!

    Hi jasondechert!
First, make sure that iTunes sees the device. When you click on the device it'll bring you to the device summary tab where it lists basic information about your device. You should see other tabs, one of which is entitled "Music."
Click on the Music tab and you'll presented with the following options:
    1. Sync Music (with a checkbox)
    2. All songs and playlists (with a radio box)
    3. Selected playlists (with a radio box)
    4. A listing of the playlists in iTunes (each with a checkbox)
    5. Include music videos (with a checkbox)
Keep in mind that everything will be grayed out if you don't have the first checkbox (Sync music) checked. Once you check that first box you can then choose to sync all of your music (the entire library) or specific playlists. If you select "selected playlists" it will then allow you to choose the specific playlists you want to sync.

  • Can't Drag & Drop Songs into Playlists

I am astounded that this appears to be such a wide spread issue and there do not seem to be any useful responses to the issue. I have always been able to drag music from my iTunes library into playlists I have already created. Now the playlists I previously created (they were not created as genius playlists) all have a funny "gear wheel" shaped symbol next to them and will not accept anything dragged from the library. If I create a new playlist (which now shows a "purchased music" symbol) and give it the name of one of the already created playlists, I can drag library music into it, but I don't want to have to recreate every playlist and manually re-drag every song into the playlists. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks

I have about 50 playlists that I created as playlists and have always been able to add songs to as I purchased them. The lists were originally created as regular playlists. Then, one day I opened up iTunes and all the existing playlists I had created as playlists, and has always added songs to, had the "gear" symbols and acted like genius playlists. How can I change them back and why did this happen...any ideas?

  • Drag & drop songs into iTunes?

I used to be able to drag and drop songs into my iTunes, but I cannot any longer.  I'm using a PC and running the latest version of iTunes.  Can anyone help me figure out how? Is there some setting change?  Thanks!

You can't reorder songs in the library using drag and drop, that only works in a playlist. You can only arrange the library by clicking at the head of any particular column which gives you an alpha numeric sort option. Try this, I found that it works for me. Right click at the top of any column in your iTunes library and choose **Track Number** from the list. Click at the top of this new column to sort it and after that click on the Album column. If you like you can then click on Artist which is how I prefer mine ordered, it will continue to hold the track order as well. Afterwards anything you import should follow this arrangement Artist>Album>Track Number within Album (you can hide the track number column when you've done if you don't want it cluttering up the view)

I'm having the same problem! I've purchased several new songs which will play fine on the computer, but if I drag them to the iPod playlist, I can't listen to them on the Pod.
I hope this can be fixed quickly. It's driving me nuts.

  • When trying to manually add new songs to ipod, itunes gets stuck on preparing to update and does not transfer songs.

While adding new songs to ipod touch, all was fine.
Then suddenly, everytime I tried to add new songs, Itunes got stuck on "preparing to update."
Now I can add no songs at all.

Somebody on twitter mentioned temporarily turning off their passcode before syncing and that seemed to help.

  • Can't drag and drop songs to iPod or iPhone?!?! Help!?! Urgent!?

So today for the first time I purchased a lot of songs and movie from the iTunes store. After purchasing items from the iTunes store, I wanted to put it in my iPhone and IPod, and it didn't work. I used to be able to do this all the time. I would drag it there and let go, and nothing would happen. And yes I do have "manually manage music and videos" checked for both my iPod and iPhone, it just wouldn't work. I'm so freaked out now. I did a lot of research on the internet and I didn't find any help. Not being to add my songs to my iPod and iPhone manually in the future is just terrible, I need to be able to do that!
Please help if you can! I'm really freaked out right now.
    Thank you.
And yes, I did authorize my computer for those things I purchased, still doesn't work.
    I'm using a iphone 3Gs version 3.1.2 and iPod 160GB.
I've never had this problem before until I first purchased today.
    Help!

Do you have purchases on your iPod from any other iTunes account? Is the computer authorized? What happens if you attempt to play the music in iTunes?

  • Unable to drag/drop to my ipod

I recently loaded i-tunes software to my computer. (I was using the musicmatch jukebox previously to load music to my ipod.) I am unable to drag and drop music onto my ipod using i-tunes, though can drag and drop to playlists. Anyone else have this problem? What do I do? I just updated the latest ipod updates.

iTunes and Apple have a designed a special format for music and as far as I'm aware you cannot use the iPod to "sync" with other programs. This is their way of securing their future I guess. So, what you should do is use iTunes, click file, import, and then find where the files are saved (typically somewhere in My Documents) and then select the files and it will convert the files to the "iPod" format, show in your library, and sync with your iPod.

  • Wiping my iMac clean! Time Machine or Manual drag/drop...?

    Hi all
I've done a bit of search but nothing's too clear yet.
I am planning to wipe clean my iMac (it's become a bit slow) but still back up all my current files.
    I've bought a passport 2tb.
Now, if I were to use Time Machine on my entire iMac, would I still be able to select files and bring them back onto my clean harddrive, after the clean?
OR is the only option to drag n drop everything onto my passport and go from there once I've formatted my iMac?
For example, re-importing my iTunes library/songs. Pro Tools sessions etc.
I basically want a fresh computer and return select files.
    Thanks!

Use Time Machine. Drag and drop will more than likely cause permission problems with your files. With TM you can select what to exclude from the backup and you can restore individual items. Once you've reinstalled continue to use TM as your automatic backup solution.
A complete wipe and reinstall may not be necessary. If we knew more about your problem and your system maybe someone could offer a less painful solution. Consider downloading and running EtreCheck http://www.etresoft.com/EtreCheck and posting it's report here. It's a small free utility that will tell everything about your system and possibly offer some clue to the problem.
Also take a look at Pondini's site for answered to your Time Machine questions http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html

  • Unable to add, drag/drop, or import to iTunes library.

My sister and I each have a MacMini. I tried to transfer files from my PC to the MacMini by transferring to the Mac's harddrive (no problem here).  For some reason I am unable to import the xml file to the iTunes library, none of the import options including drag and drop works.  Nothing happens.  My sister was able to perform on the task on her MacMini with no problem.  We've compared the preference files to no avail.  Although, I've figured out another way of transferring the file, I still would like these features to work.  What do I need to do?  I have the current version of iTunes 10.5.
    Thanks

    Try these steps.
    1. Turn off all the devices in the chain in this order: MBPr, any wireless routers on the network, the internet modem.
    2. Wait several seconds after turning off the last item then power them back on in reverse order waiting for each device to completely power up before turning on the next device.
Let us know how it works.

  • Manual Drag&Drop on Panel components

Ok people I have been following this example
    http://blogs.adobe.com/flexdoc/drag_and_drop/
What the goal of my application will be to have a canvas on
top of my application and one at the bottom. I will start off with
a set of dynamically generated panels in the top or bottom canvas,
doesn't really matter which. I want to be able to count how many
panels are in each canvas and get the related id and name for each
    panel in each canvas.
I have set up a canvas at the top where I pretty much just
have the code from that example I linked to at the top except that
my panels are generated on the fly and their count is variable. I
am STRUGGLING to create a "two way drag and drop" between the two
canvases (moving child panel from the top canvas to the bottom
    canvas and vice versa).
I have found PLENTY of two way drop and drag examples but
they all were about lists, datagrid, or tree components -
components that already come built in with "drag and drop" and "two
way drag and drop" but in my case the drag and drop is manually
    created.
I am totally clueless as to the process. Can anyone point me
in the right direction? I posted in the yahoo usergroups but so far
my post has NOT been approved and it was posted like three hours
    ago.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
