Unable to Merge Partition
Dear Apple Community,
I am having issues merging the partition on my Macbook Pro.
I created a separate partition of 50GB to install and test OS X Yosemite Beta (Macintosh HD 2).
After playing around with it, I decided to remove the partition created.
Now, I would like to regain the 50GB that I used to partition for Yosemite - note the empty grey space between Macintosh HD and Bootcamp.
From my understanding, I should be able to just drag the bottom corner of the partition lay out in order to regain the 50GB that was set aside.
However, after I click apply, nothing happens and it reverts back to:
I've also tried doing by via the Recovery HD (rebooting and holding down alt) with no success.
Am I doing something wrong? I don't want to do a fresh install

When I boot up in recovery mode (cmd+r) I am able to load up disk utility however, I essentially go through the same process as in the first post.
From my understanding, I believe what you have said is completely correct. After attempting to resize the partition, I get prompted with a pop up display that states: "Partition failed. Partition failed with the error. Couldn't unmount disk."
Unfortunately, I don't have any boot up disks. I have only been backing up those important files onto an external HDD. If you don't mind me asking, which of the methods would you advise as being the one most likely to solve this partition issue, and least time consuming? I'm actually not too fussed about reformatting anymore.
Oh yes, I am running 10.9 and not 10.6. I noticed this afterwards but was unable to figure out how to move this thread. Apologies as this was my first time on the forum.

Unable to merge two partitions
I have my Macintosh HD partition, and a bunch of GB of free space, also partitioned. I am unable to merge the two together, there seems to be no drop down arrows to have them combine. Also, I cannot reformat the free space, so all I am left with is 350GB of free space and 350 GB of Macintosh HD. Does anyone know how I could possible merge the two together again?
If the Macintosh HD partition is above the free space, drag the slider between them as far down as it will go and click Apply.
If the Macintosh HD partition is below the free space, create a new partition in the free space, clone the contents of Macintosh HD to it, restart from the newly-created partition, delete Macintosh HD, and then proceed as above.

Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
I was experiencing a problem with my Windows XP installation on Bootcamp. The Windows side kept restarting, and I could not find the reason, so I formatted with the Windows XP disc and tried to re-install it, but it didn't work. I forget the exact error as to why. So I went back to the Mac side and re-formatted the partition sing Bootcamp, and now when I try to re-install the Windows XP on the Bootcamp partition, I get the error:
Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
What can I do? I don't understand, because this disk has worked before and I am on the mac side right now, so the actual disk does not appear to be damaged. What can I do?Do a full format as it will check for errors and mark bad clusters if it finds any (full format = quick + chkdsk /x ), but only create one OS partition e.g like 30GB or something , this will be plenty enough for the os ,instead of the whole drive . Will save you time .
Wait with partitioning the rest of the drive as an extra partition until the OS is installed using diskmanagement .
Also make sure sata-dma is enabled in bios . -
I am unable to merge events as all drop downs in the events selection in the tool bar are greyed out. Is there a solution?

I tried to drag one event into another event but was unable to do so. The event that I tried to move into a second one would only move to another position in the event columnn, but it would not merge into another one. -
Unable to create partition while installing windows 7 on MacBook Pro
Have new MacBook Pro (bought 5/30/14) has 16GB ram and 500GB HD. Trying to install new copy of Windows7 Home Premium. Have USB drive for Windows drivers. Get through Boot Camp OK and when windows installation begins and selecting BootCamp partition the screen says unable to find partition. HELP!
MacBook is running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)find the boot camp instructions, at that point where you are stuck, you are supposed to manually click the bootcamp labeled partition and reformat it via the advanced/format button below then it will continue
unrelated, is your usb device usb2 only? if not, you might have an issue where your kb/trackpad do not work once windows is installed. do you have a usb kb and mouse you can use? -

Give this basic troubleshooting fix a try:

Hi,
In Windows systems we can only extend a partition to unallocated space behind it - so if we have 2 consistent partitions, we can only delete the second one and extend the first one.
If the 2 partitions are on 2 different disks, you can also create a spanned volume - you will still need to delete the second partition and convert both disks to dynamic disk to create the spanned volume.

Merging partition into NEW partition
I need to merge some range partition into a new big one,
something like

My question is: How should I specify the tablespace for the NEW partition name ?

What am I missing ?I haven't tested your example but I think that you can merge only TWO partitions in one merge operation, so if you attempt to merge three partitions you need actually to perform this in two steps rather than in a single step. In addition in case of range partitions these have to adjacent to be merged, but this seems to be the case in your example.

Failed to revert logical volume group while merging partition
Hi All,
Previously, on my macbook pro, I partitioned my disk for win7 for my dual operation system and only left 120 GB for OS, now I want to delete win7 and return disk space to OS. Currently my OS is yosemite.
I have already deleted disk space for win7 and merged it back to disk0s3. And, I had a problem to merge disk0s2 with disk0s3.
I was told it is because I need to revet my Logical Volume Group. I am blocked at reverting it.

How to merge partitions in Windows 7 ?

i have partitions C and D. My problem in that C is smoler than D. How can i move some space to C from D or to merge this partitions?
Thanks in advance,I’m assuming D is just a data partition and doesn’t contain the page file, boot files or a second operating system. If so, merge the partitions by removing D and extending C, as follows:
1. Back up to an external device any important data on D and, optionally, move the same important data from D to C.
2. Right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management, then right-click the graphic of the D partition and select Delete. The partition returns to Unallocated for a Primary Partition or Free Space if it‘s a Logical Drive within an Extended
Partition. Delete the partition if it is an Extended partition.
3. Now right-click the graphic of the C partition and select Extend.
I just had to restore an HP with Window 7 Pro using their factory supplied restoration discs. At no time did the set up ask me about formating or patitions. It overrode the primary parition I created and it ended up setting up 4. The 1st is a
system area, 2nd is the HP backup partition, 3rd is C: and the 4th unallocated. C is only 100gb, the 4th has the remaining of the 1tb drive.
Right clicking on C: within the manager and "Extend" is grayed out. -
In 2012 I used bootcamp to get windows 7 on my macbook pro 8.1, running Lion. I was able to resize the partition at any time, over the last year windows 7 has become less needed and frankly it's a sucky OS anyway even compared to XP so I'm happy to reduce my bootcamp partition. Now the problem is whilst I can increase it I am now unable to reduce the size! The partition cannot be modified according to the disk utility, I still have over 220gb left on my main partition even so I rather have more, I could just erase bootcamp altogether if all else fails but I do have some older PC games that would go to waste if I do. Please help!
(I was able to resize it before last year)try camp tune, because tweaking partition sizes manually (even though you did it before) can toast one or both OSs on your machine

Merge to Panorama in Photoshop not using edited RAW files
When I had LR4, I could Edit in > Merge to Panorama in PS and it would take the edited RAW files and merge them. Now in LR5 it seems to be taking the unedited RAW files and making the panorama. Is there a setting or something I'm missing in LR5?
