Unable to modify colors in a mask (and pretty desperate!)

Hi everyone!
I'm a new Motion 5 user -a total rookie.
I'm trying to get a mask to desaturate a face (classic "demon face") but as soon as I complete the mask with the bezier tool it turns white (unlike in many tutorials where I can still see the face).
Next I try to add effects (such as desaturation) but nothing seems to affect the mask. It does affect my (whole) clone layer, but the mask remains white.
The same happens when I want to add generators from the library: the whole image gets the effect and I just can't make it apply to the mask only.
Any tips, please?

Thanks for such quick reply.
When you say "to the left", you mean to the left of these tools below the canvas?
If so, I can't see any other ones. Maybe it's my interface setup?
I really apreciate your help. My FX editor has just vanished and I'm to submit a short film to a festival before Sept. 15th... and I'm just starting with Motion!!!

  • Unable to modify color management

    I am using OSX 10.9.1
I am attempting to print photographs to a Canon Pixma printer
The Instructions state that I need to change "Color Matching" from the drop down box from "ColorSynch" to "Canon Color Matching"
While both selections appear, they are greyed out preventing me from changing from ColorSynch to Canon
Any ideas why this is an issue?
    Thanks,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • I am unable to print color photos from i photo using a Brother Printer

I am unable to print color photos from i photo using a Brother MFC-6490CW all in one.  The photos appear to be in grayscale.  I have checked the printer settings, but for some reason I am not able to access the color management on my printer from printer set up.  It only gives me the standard option.  I have spent hours checking Bother's website and Apple's and I am not able to come up with a valid answer.  I know that the color print works.  If I print something from the internet of from outlook it will print in color.  I know all of my cartridges are in working order, I have cleaned the print head on my Brother, but I am still not able to print photos in color!!!
What puzzles me the most is why I am unable to really access the color management menu on my printer?  It just does not come up.  I have the option from paper handling to print photos, but this has nothing to do with the quality.  I have also tried printing the photo from an Adobe PDF file and I still have the same problem.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thank you.

In the Print dialogue box click on the little triangle to the right of the name of the printer. That will expand the dialogue box.

  • I am unable to click on a layer mask for editing. CS6 OS10.10

I have been working on a file and all of a sudden I am unable to click on a layer mask in order to edit that mask. I am still able to do the following things:
Create a new adjustment layer. When I do this a new mask is formed for that layer and automatically selected for editing. I can edit this mask. As soon as I click off of it I cannot go back to it.
I am able to shift-click and command-click on layer masks and get those options/selections.
I am able to drag an existing mask to a new adjustment layer.
    Hide/unhide the mask-overlay
Pretty much everything but click ON the mask and have it selected for editing.
    I have tried the following:
    Closing and re-opening the file.
    Restarting photoshop.
    Restarting my computer.
    Deleting/recreating the preferences files.
    Any insight out there?

I discovered my problem by trying to paint on whatever I was selected on. It laid down the mask overlay. I thought about it and realized that I must have bumped the 'Q' key and put myself in Quick Mask mode.
So now this is here in case anyone else makes this mistake! :-)

Hi Everyone....I figured it out.  Strangely, although I had NEVER used Liquify in PS CC 2014....I just realized that in Liquify Advanced Mode that the "SHOW MASK" option was on by default!  I unchecked SHOW MASK.  Everything is OK. Whew!  Tks!

  • Action help to copy color in layer mask to another layer mask

    Hi all,
    Having trouble with this problem...
I have layer 1 with a color mask set to black, red, blue etc.
I have layer 2 with a color mask which i want to match and also become black, red, blue
There are hundreds of files, and the color in layer 1 is always different.
Manually i would simply click on the layer 2 mask which opens the color picker, and select the area of layer 1 i want to match.
But doing that in an action does not work.
I can't get the action to recognize that i want to copy the color content of a mask, and not the specific color used in the example during which the macro is recorded. The color picker does not seem capable of selecting a dynamic input (e.g. whatever color is on layer 1), it simply copies whatever was in layer 1 during recording like a dumb instrument.
    thanks for any input.

Not sure what you mean by color mask, but I just noticed cs6 seems to have a new feature in the actions tab dropdown menu (small top right button) called 'allow tool recording'.
I just tried to make an eyedropper action with that option turned on and now the color does change when I change the image colors and run the action again.
    Hope this helps.

Ah, no. They published the only drivers HP gave them. If they didn't publish them, then Mac users would be unable to use HP devices at all, except for those devices supported by 3rd parties such as Gutenprint and the HPIJS Project. HP is solely responsible for the state of their drivers. And it's not just Mac drivers which are bad; a lot of Windows drivers stink, too. HP simply has a problem writing drivers. For the most part they have excellent hardware, but truly terrible software.

  • Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that?  It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer.  If I like the changes, I can keep them.  I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer.  I can do any type of blend or combination I desire.  I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part.  I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer?  What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color.  I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower.  There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color.  Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background.  No need to start over.  Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

  • 32 bits banding in simple masks and gradients

hi this is the issue im dealing with
    1) im testing with two computers, a good laptop and a good desktop, both new , powerful, both with NVIDIA graphic cards which i guess are supposed to be good graphic cards
    2) im using the latest software, photoshop CS4 and AE CS4
    3) im trying all this in 32 bits in both and in the other modes later also
    4) i am switching off opengl as for the suggestions i receive, and also im seeing all at full resolution
so given all that written above, now we go to photoshop, create a new file say 1920x1080, take a greyscale gradient with the gradient tool and put it on a new layer,
and there it is, the banding
so either there is something really wrong in my setup, or this is a generic problem
i thought it could be my video hardware, but how could this be, both my control panel settings of both computers are set to highest color depth 32 bits, and both have NVIDIA graphic cards, and both are a year old or the desktop a month old, i mean it cannot get much more recent, certainly its not the best hardware around thats for sure, but really i think it should be enough to display an smooth gradient i would hope
i have known about the technique to use Add Noise for a long time to get rid of banding but i didnt remember that banding would happen so easily in a simple gradient or in a simple mask even at 32 bits, this is what puzzles me, i thought the whole point of 32 bits is that these things like this type of banding wouldnt happen
    thank u for any help
by the way ,searching around online i have seen so many threads of people complaining about banding,
is Adobe addressing somewhere what seems to be a generic concern about Banding, maybe with a nice article explaining the reasons, causes, and solutions for banding that u may still get in 32 bits etc? that would be very nice
thank u very much again for any advice you could give me, thank you
    jav

Banding  is a complex topic and is not going to be resolved here.  Something you wrote  should  to be clarified, however. You mentioned  using 32  bits five times, though I think you were referring to two different measures of bit depth.   I am assuming you meant that you were doing your tests in Photoshop's 32  bits/channel image mode.  You then went on to talk about your Nvidia video setup  stating that it was also 32-bit.  That's fine, but the latter represents 32 bits per pixel, not per channel, and that translates to 8 bits per channel.   One significant reason you cannot set your graphics card  for higher per channel  bit depth is that only experimental displays can handle  more than 8 bits per channel.  In fact, some  LCD displays cannot even produce 8 bits worth of resolution even though they are so specified - they use spatial dither to up the color measure.
The point is that your stated premise that using 32 bits should eliminate banding may be true, but your implementation to verify it is ineffective  as you have only 8 bits per channel on the output or dispay end.   How obvious banding is depends on too many parameters to discuss in this forum, but a significant one is the quality and the calibration of your monitor as well as its contrast settings. One needs to have a correct and smooth monitor gamma set and matched color channel to color channel.   In black and white smooth gradients what sometimes shows as banding, is the color channels being off by 1 color value (or more), that is, the R, G and B values are not equal . Looking at the info panel as you scan across a gradient will show you if this is the case.  This is common in inexpensive monitors.
Changing the smoothness setting in Photoshop's Gradient editor can also change the appearance of banding.  Relevant to this forum, my experience is that looking at smooth gradients in the 32 bit/channel mode produces no banding on my display. So I will assume Adobe has done the coding correctly.   It is the software + the video processing and display adapter + the display hardware and settings + the visual perception of the viewer that all contribute to the perception of banding or contouring.  Kind of a long non answer, but I think relevant to the topic.

  • Color correction, muzzle flares and smoke questions

A couple of days ago I directed an action sequence called 'Silent takedown' using Premiere CS5 and After Effects. The goal was to do a very fast paced editing style but still within the realm of 'classic' action films from '90 like Face/Off and Mission Impossible 2. I've got some question regarding visual effects done in After effects. Tell me if you thought they were good or bad. Also the color correction was done in AE and PP. Does the overall movie look good?
    Here's a full link again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O62_hYOmlaY
    Thanks for watchin'

Well, aside from it being quite disturbing to have a team of 14 year olds turning everyone to blood soup it's got some great camera work.
Your first mistake might have been thinking there's anything worth copying in mission impossible 2.  Sorry, had to be said.
Todd's right.  The clouds of blood is comical.  Maybe tone that down?  Right now it just looks like a string of video copilot tutorials one after another.  You need to hide effects, and make them feel seamless.
Ask yourselves what are you trying to showcase.  If it's post production, you have to tweak those effects and make them look classy.  There are shots where bullet holes are appearing in glass and there's little breakage, and no reaction from the actors.  You can't just glue in effects.  If the actors don't react, you can't use the shot, or it should be changed so you don't notice.  Add a shake etc.
If it's editing, then that has to be solid too.
You've got time shifting all over the place without it being stylistic.  For example, the guys who walk up off the top are shown in a wide shot that you re-use for the security cam.  They enter, put their masks on, walks softly up to the guards and take them out, but then we are inside and the scarface guy is watching action that happened minutes ago on the monitor.  If you're going to jump around in time, you need to find a stylistic way to do that.  Why not bring the scarface guy's scenes into the lead up, show the monitor, (drop that long shot at the top) to introduce the guys sneaking up.  This introduced tension (will scarface notice???) gives you an idea of who the guards are watching out for and drops that opening super wide of the two kids going up against the wall.  That shot doesn't work because when you show them super-wide, you get a feeling for how exposed they are and what a terrible job they're doing of "sneaking" up.  But it works as security cam footage...
Another example is when you have one of your agents say "good morning gentlemen.  He says something strange to men who are in masks and they give him enough time to put a gun to his head and pull the trigger in spite of the face that they're holding their own guns.  Then you have the camera exposure flash cuts to the other agent sneaking up...
If you want to make this effect work, you need to use editing to explain why the second guard didn't reflexively shoot the first agent.  have the agent say, "good morning gentleman" and start the action of raising the gun.  Then flash cut to the other agent sneaking up, then back the the first agent shooting, then back to the second guard being shot.  Then all of a sudden you have a frenetic action scene.  Right now the pacing feels slow and unrealistic.
The effects go off the rails a bit at the end.  The muzzle flashes don't aim in the right direction, and the particle smoke becomes very obviously added in post.  One shot in particular is a dude walking through a black smoke cloud from behind a van.  Loose that smoke in the second to jump cuts.  And if oyu're going to have a smoky enclosed space. you have to add atmosphere in other shots.
If you're not going to use practical effects for the gunshots, you need to cut away. Having a guy explode with particles and stock footage will always be "funny" without having some squibs on set.  I know it makes it harder and more complicated, but you have to have the whole package, or it'll always just look like kids messing around and...
... oop, my render is done.
