Unable to modify/replace/unlock hosts file with admin account

Hi all,
I'm having a serious issue when trying to modify the hosts file in Yosemite 10.10.3
I already tried through the terminal with sudo commands, Get Info window, editing the file externaly and then trying to replace the original hosts with the new but nothing works. Already repaired the disk permisions in case it had to be with the issue but didn't help.
I'm using an account with admin privileges but it seems I'm not allowed to unlock the file.
Here is a screenshot of how the GetInfo windows looks like for the hosts file:
And here is what I get when trying to save from sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Any help will be highly welcomed.

     sudo chflags nouchg /private/etc/hosts
and relock it when you've finished
     sudo chflags uchg /private/etc/hosts
It's locked for a reason.

  • Unable to see options in reporting services with admin account

I have sysadmin access to the sql server but i am unable to access the reports which i am using earlier. recently i have updated the server sp4 on current sql sever 2005.
how to re-enable the  access to the reporting server. please help me.

    Hi RoyalM,
According to your description, you are using windows domain account which has full access to report manager, but you couldn’t see any folders in the page.
Based on my research, this is because of User Access Control. Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems limit the overuse of elevated permissions by removing administrator permissions when accessing
applications. Because the noted operating systems limit permissions, members of the local Administrators group run most applications as if they are using the Standard User account.
If you are executing the report locally, we can Run the Internet Explorer (IE) as Administrator. if the folders still are no shown, we can add the report manager to Trusted sites zone to solve the issue.
If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Can't Replace (Relink) AIFF files with anything.

    Hi there,
using FCPx 10.0.9 on 64 bit iMac which runs like a top.
I used some AIFF's in a session before experiencing and confirming here that even when using optimized media, they upset our finicky FCPX.   I converted the files to WAVs used relink (and create optimized media again) to replace them, and everything was fine.
Somehow the files have become unlinked.  The Event Browser files still show as AIF files in the Event Browser (and in the Relink dialogue window,) and when I try to relink them to the WAV versions, it *seems* to work at first.  The progress bar for "Confirming compatible format type" or whatever finishes quickly & disappears, then the file name is no longer in the Relink window.  Great right?
Only nothing has changed in the Event Browser or Timeline.  I seem to have trashed the original AIF files once the WAV's worked, but I have even tried converting the WAVs *back* to AIFF's and tried to relink to those just to see if relink worked at all, and yeah, no.
Totally stumped, and a bit worried.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Doing "Show in Finder" for the AIFF files brings up aliases in the Event's Original Media Folder.   Based on some file path remnants it's now looking like I actually imported the AIFF's (converted in iTunes from mp3's)  directly from an iTunes folder in which I created them (and tagged them as a single album,) whereas I thought I had imported them as optimized media.  That would confirm why the AIFF's were wonky.  Anyway those files / album / folder have been deleted through iTunes, which I would have done assuming the WAV's were securely in their place.
The WAV'es *were* imported with optimized media setting, as evidenced by the real files - not aliases - being in the Original Media folder.  (WAV's originally created in iTunes before optimized import.)
So yes WAV versions are in broswer and fully available.  How would I replace the AIF files with the WAV's, I assumed relink was the way to do that.  Or do you mean replace the edit pieces in time line.   I don't know how I would do that to get all the time codes to match - dropping the full clip over the edit piece gives a number of options but I don't think any will replace with same in and out time code, unless I'm mistaken.   Also I would like to confirm that my Relink can still be functional.
I did try one more thing, which was to delete one of the WAVs from the Event, then trying again to link to it again  - thinking maybe the AIFF couldn't link to it because it was already associated with a clip in the Event.   It didn't work.   Also if it had it wouldn't explain why when I try to link to a newly created AIFF version, it will not link to that either, despite identical file names.

  • Replacing lower quality files with better files on iTunes Match

I have an iTunes library that is years old so some of the music files are of a lower quality than the files that are now on Match.  Rather than ripping these CDs again to iTunes, is there a way of replaceing the old files with the Match files on iCloud?
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi,
If the tracks are match, you can delete the original and download the upgraded version. If the track is uploaded, you will need to rerip your CDs to get better quality.

  • You are unable to log in to the File Vault user account "myaccount "...

I know there are various posts already out there on remedies for recovering your data stored on a FileVault account when you receive the following message at the login screen; *"You are unable to log in to the File Vault user account "myaccount " at this time"*, but this genuinely worked for me despite AppleCare providing absolutely no assistance whatsoever. In fact, if I had followed their advise I'd be inconsolable right now having wiped my MacBook Pro and contemplating the prospect of rewriting my two essays due in 3 days time!
I, in a moment of shear stupidity, decided to move the sparsebundle file in my one and only account to trash. Thinking nothing of my foolish actions I shut down for the evening without a care in the world. The next day I started up my computer as usual, and as usual I was prompted at the login screen for my password. I entered the correct password, but was alarmed to see the message above flash before my eyes. Without boring you all with what I did over the weekend waiting for AppleCare to open again on Monday morning. Anyway, this post is specifically for people who have put the sparsebundle of their FileVault-enabled account in the trash (NOT anything else!) without emptying it, of course! The other prerequisite is that you must REMEMBER YOUR FILEVAULT ACCOUNT PASSWORD!
    1. Firstly, you must insert *Disc 1 of the Mac OS X Install* discs.
    2. Restart your computer holding down the letter S (make sure you are holding this down BEFORE the start up noise sounds)
    3. Select the appropriate language and continue to the next screen (DO NOT go past the next screen, the WELCOME screen)
    4. At the grey bar at the top, under Utilities, select *Reset Password*
    5. Select the Administrator/Root account and proceed to change the password of this account to test
    6. Confirm the password by reentering it and click Save
    7. Restart your computer and at the login screen you should now be able to select an account named Other
    8. The username for this account is root and the password is test (the password you entered earlier)
    9. Using Finder, locate the Terminal utility, which can be found in *Applications --> Utilities*
    10. Enter the following, ignoring the bold of course (pay attention to lower cases AND spaces!): *defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE*
    11. Hit Enter
    12. On the next line, enter: *killall Finder*
    13. Hit Enter again
    14. Type: exit on the next line and close Terminal
    15. This has enabled the hidden files on your computer to be visible
    16. You then need to locate the sparsebundle file in the trash of your usual account folder (it could be 501, so search for that too) whilst logged in to the administrator account
    17. Once you have found it, click *Go to Folder* under Go in the grey bar and type /Users/
    18. Create a *new folder* at this location with a new username
    19. Move the sparsebundle from its present location to the folder you have just created
    20. Click Get Info on the new folder, and at the very bottom click *Apply to enclosed items*
    21. In *System Preferences --> Accounts*, create a new user with EXACTLY the same name as the folder you created (eg. Folder name = burtreynolds, new user = burtreynolds)
    22. A window should appear if you have done the above correctly stating *A folder in Users folder already has same name, would you like to use it?*
    22. Click OK
    23. Click *Show All* at the top of the Accounts window
    24. Restart your system and log in to the new account you have created
    25. The sparsebundle should now be visible
    26. Double-click on the sparsebundle, it will prompt you to enter a password
    27. Enter the password of your former account (if you have genuinely forgotten this password, I honestly can't help any further at this point)
    28. If the password is correct, the sparsebundle will automatically mount and you will have access to all the files
    29. NEVER EVER USE FILEVAULT AGAIN AND BACK UP ALL DATA YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE!!!
The above worked for me, and to say I'm mildly annoyed with AppleCare is, well, putting it mildly really!

  • Opening Files with Admin Privleges

    Hello all:
How do you open a file with admin privileges once you are in the program? Is it possible to run a program with admin privileges? The reason I ask is that I installed the GUI version of vim and need to be able to open some files which will be read-only unless I supply an administrator password.
    John

You can open any application capable of running in Mac OS X natively as root by entering:
    sudo /path/to/application/Contents/MacOS/application
in the Terminal, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. This works on a per-run basis, and the command will need to be entered each time you want to launch the application. Other methods exist which only require the password to be entered once, and work on a per-application basis.

  • HT201210 I have done all of the things on this list, to include editing the hosts file with no the same error each time (3194).  I am trying to restore my iphone 4 ios 6 to get it unlocked.  Diagnostics show no issue communicating with apple. Help.

I am trying to restore my iphone 4 ios 6 to acheive unlock.  hit restore and it unloads software, confirms with apple then displays the 3194 error.  I have turned off my virus scanner, unplugged all usb except for iphone, edited the hosts file and run diagnostics which showes communication with apple is fine.  What do I need to do to get my ipone to restore?

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • How can I REPLACE original RAW files with JPG's and keep my 'Develop mode' edits?

    An image describing my problem:
    http://i.imgur.com/hcqMYkv.jpg
    (Lightroom 5)
'edits' = Edits made in develop mode.
'CR2' = My RAW image file format.
I have existing CR2's with edits for them saved in Lightroom.
I want to replace the CR2's with JPG's, and do nothing else. I want those JPG's to inherit the CR2's edits, but I DO NOT want the edits to be permanently applied to the image.
If I export the CR2's (which have edits) to JPG's, the edits will be permanently applied to them. I do not want this.
If I export the CR2's to JPG's without the edits, I have no way of getting the edits back and will have to redo the work if I use that photo again.
Any solutions? I've been trying for a while and have no idea how to do this.
Q: Why not keep the CR2's?
A: I am uploading these files to an online host (S3) as my primary storage method and uploading CR2's takes way too long with my internet speeds. Furthermore, online storage costs money.
Q: Why not shoot with JPGs instead of shooting raw?
A: I do my initial edits with the raw files and then archive them as JPG's to save storage space. They won't be raw anymore if I apply future edits, but I still have the option of retouching them from the 'original' state and still have my old edits preserved.

Probably the best thing for you to do is simply use lossy DNG format (e.g. export as, or convert to..): raw data is re-formatted with jpeg compression (full-rez or reduced-rez), but all raw settings apply.
If you insist on trying to have a true jpeg file with (mostly) raw settings, then:
The simplest way I can think of to do it without a script or plugin:
    * Reset the raw photo (consider preserving things that don't translate well, like profile-based lens corrections and white balance).
    * Export jpeg
    * Un-reset the image (e.g. using edit history or pre-reset snapshot).
    * Sync settings from raw to jpeg (note: omit settings that don't transfer well, or that were not reset..).
    * Optionally: Delete raw
To automate/streamline would require a script or plugin.

  • Can iTunes convert a file and replace the old file with the new one?

I am trying to convert my wav files to Apple Lossless to save some space. How can I convert the files and make them replace the old files? Right now it just converts new files so that I end up with two files. I have thousands I want to convert and just replace the old ones.
I have an external program that will do it for me, however if I go that route then when my ITunes files are converted to lossless files I need to re-link the files as they show up with the ! showing they are missing. That would mean manually re-linking every song, which would take forever unless there is a way to mass re-link all the files.

iTunes does not see the newly created files as the same file because they are not the same file.  They are new, different files.  If you have a track that is 1234.wav and you create 1234.mp3 it simply isn't the same file and you can't trick iTunes into thinking it is.  iTunes will handle it as a brand new file.
Check Dougscripts web site for scripts which help modifying tag data.  However, I suspect you won't find any doing exactly what you want doing.  Some tag data are only accessible by iTunes itself.
As for playlists, there's things you can try though they may be more effort than they are worth.  For example, you could add a special code for each playlist to some element of a tag (e.g., grouping).  Convert the file, then make a smart playlist selecting for the code you added to the group of tracks in the old playlist.  If you have hundreds of playlists with a dozen tracks each this will be a grand nuisance.  If it is a handful of playlists with hundreds of tracks each this might be worth it.
Another way to preserve playlists would be to edit the .xml copy of the iTunes library file, replacing ".wav" with ".mp3" or whatever format you are using.  However, this won't help with play counts because that is only stored in the .itl copy of the file which you cannot edit.

I accidently replaced a file with another.  Can I undo my action?
I had two files named graphics.  One was on my desktop and another was within another file called solitarie.  I move the one on my desktop (wrong file) into the solitarie file and was asked if I wanted to replace the graphics file in the solitarie folder (the correct one).  I said yes accidently and then remembered that I had made a mistake.  If I use undo, it only move the wrong file back to the desktop.  Is there an undo of replace?

Sorry, but's that's why you get the warning. "Replace" means just that - the new file over-writes the old one. There is no undo.

  • How do I replace one video file with another

    Hey all
I'm new to Imovie, so please bare over with me.
I made a long movie using a MOD format file from my JVC home camera
When I where to convert or burn the movie in Imovie it made an error.
After much trouble I found out that it was the MOD format that was the problem
So I bought an expensive piece of software that converted the MOD file to MOV:
And with a new test project it now works flawless...
Anyways back to the original project and the problem:
    - I have now converted the original MOD file to MOV
    - I have the original Imovie project with the MOD file.
How do I replace the mod file in the imovie project with the new mov file, while keeping, that is transfering all my work on the mod file over to the new mov file?
    Thnx

  • Cannot use hosts file with 10.5.1

    Hi,
Not sure when this problem creeped in, I think it is since my upgrade to Leopard.
The problem is that whatever I put into my /etc/hosts file is not used. Restards, cache flushes do not help.
If I have in the hosts file
    xx.xx.xx.xx anotherHost
    nslookup anotherHost fails
What I think is the root cause is that the resolver is hardwired only to DNS and does not read the hosts file. Unfortunatelly I cannot find a way how to change the resolving order in Leopard. lookupd is gone and was replaced by what ?
    Reproducable on colleague's macbook.
    So short summary :
    * how do I make my resolver use hosts file
    * how do I control the lookup sequence of my resolver
    Regards,
    Georgi

As described by others NSLOOKUP looks up onto the name server not the host file
Samba instead would use your host file first then an NSLOOKUP then WINS and finally broadcast
So what kind of service do you want to use your host file for?

  • Replace an existing file with a new one

This is probably a very simple problem. I have a script that is making an XML document. I am sucking information out of a database and exporting it as a XML file. The script runs just dandy except when I want to update the text file I receive an error along the lines of "the file already exists".
What code do I use to replace an existing file?
    tell application "Finder"
set theFile to "donky.xml" as string
set theFullName to mySavePathAsText & theFile
    set theNewFile to make new file at myPath with properties {name:theFile}
    write myFinalText to file theFullName
set the extension hidden of theNewFile to false
    end tell
I assume I would use the "replacing yes" command but that is not working or I am not doing it right.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hello
    Two things.
    • 'open for access file _path with write permission' will create new file at the path given in _path if it's not present.
    • 'set eof' command will clear the existing contents of the given file, which lets you replace the contents.
So you may try something like this. (Finder is only used to set 'extension hidden' property of the file)
    Good luck
    H
    -- SNIPPET
    set theFileName to "donky.xml"
set theFullPath to mySavePathAsText & theFileName
    try
set fref to open for access file theFullPath with write permission
set eof fref to 0 -- clear the existing contents
write myFinalText to fref starting at eof
    close access fref
    on error errs number errn
    try
    close access file theFullPath
    on error --
    end try
    error errs number errn
    end try
    tell application "Finder"
set extension hidden of item theFullPath to false
    end tell
    -- END OF SNIPPET
