Unable to mount Camera as external drive

I have three cameras which have not had any problems connecting prior to the latest update to Mountain Lion 10.8.2: Sony NEX-3, Samsung NX100, and a Toshiba Camileo H30.
The NEX-3 is recognized by image capture and iPhoto, the other two are not.  I want to mount the camera as an external drive, though it appears that Apple has removed this functionality from Mountain Lion.  Is there a workaround for this?  Some setting I am missing?
Thanks for your help.

Does your Maxtor allow alternative connecting--firewire or USB. Try the firewire in particular.

  • MacPro won't mount Windows USB3 External drive

I have a macPro 2,1 and it won't mount a Windows external drive that is USB3.  I've tried NTFS-3G but still won't see the USB3 drive. I thought USB3 was backwards compatible. Can anyone help?

WEll, Paragon tends to have kept up their NTFS drivers
Your Mac is using PCIe 3.0 controller which are iffy even on OS X and may not be seen by Windows (and my Windows PCIe 3.0 card doesn't show up or work in Mac OS).
If you attach it via USB2 it might show, depends really on the bridge used by the enclosure probably. It is has USB3 and eSATA and you have PCIe SATA (Sonnet E4P is expensive but works great in both platforms)

  • Unable to move project from external drive back to FCPX.

The HD was recently replaced in my iMac. Fortunately I had backed up my FCPX events and projects to folders on an external drive. I have down loaded FCPX again to the new HD but I'm unable to move my project back into FCPX. Having opened FCPX, I then open the project library, select the external drive, open the folder containing my project but the  "current version fcpproject"  is grey  (not available). I was however able to drag the "fcpevent" file into the event library.
    Any help will be appreciated

Since there is no disclosure triangle on your external showing in your project library, there are two possibilities:
    1) There are no projects presently located on the drive.
    2) Project files are on the drive but FCP can't see them because they are not at the root level of the drive.
So either way, to straighten this out you will have to move some files in the Finder – even though best practices (as both Tom and Luis have pointed out) are to stay within FCP to do that.
Move the existing CurrentVersion file to a temporary folder to hide it from FCP.
Unless you know that the Ball project is at a specific location on your external, do a spotlight search on Final Cut Projects. If something comes up, with FCP closed, navigate to it in the Finder and move it to the root level of the external drive. Then open FCP and it should now be accessible in your project library.  Select it in the library; go to File>Move Project. Things should now work.
But if you don't have another copy on your external, open FCP and hot the plus button at the bottom of project library and create a new project. That will create a Final Cut Projects Folder in your Movies folder (which is where it should be in your home directory). Close FCP. Open the temp file and drag the CurrentVersion file that you hid to the Final Cut Projects folder.
Hopefully, you wil now be able to get back to work.

  • Unable to write in an external drive

    Hi, everybody:
I am unable to write or work with the material I have in an external drive. I can see it, but nothing more. I see I have only permission for 'Read only' ('Solo puede leer', in Spanish), but I can't change it because there is no 'lock' to open there, or an evident way to do it. And I don't want to touch things in the System Preferences without knowing.
    What can I do?
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Remedios.

Thank you, Barney-15E. I can't reformat the drive, because I have there a lot of valuable stuff. Stuff I need to work with.
Hey... I'm a little disappointed with this. How is it that this super computer (the iMac is really wonderful, I agree) can't work with a simple hard drive I can use everywhere else..?
Well, anyway, sorry for disturbing you with my problems. Which one, Paragon, Tuxera, you recommend?
    Thanks again,
    Remedios.

  • HELP!  mounting laptop as external drive

I just bought my Macbook Pro (used) and I want to mount it as an external drive from my old G4 running on OSX 10.3.9
I have a firewire cable to link them but I don't know how to launch either one on the other desktop.
    HELP!!

    yeah, not working.
It is a desktop G4, not powerbook. Does this matter? Is there some way to refresh the desktop or something to get it to appear? I have the firewire logo bouncing around on the desktop monitor but no indication that it has mounted on the MBP.
I tried it the other way as well - same issue.

  • 10.5.1:  Unable to mount a USB flash drive.

I've seen this problem posted elsewhere, but so far I have yet to see a solution:
After upgrading my MacBook Pro to 10.5.1, it can no longer mount USB flash drives. They show up in System Profiler as well as the USB Probe tool, but do not show up in Disk Utility (and, obviously, not on the Desktop or listed in /Volumes).
I checked the drives on a co-worker's MBP, also running 10.5, and the problem persisted there. The drives mount and work fine under 10.4, as well as various flavors of Windows. When plugged into the MBPs, the status LEDs light up, so they are getting power, and mice plugged into the USB ports work fine.
So, the problem seems to be specific to mounting a USB flash drive in 10.5/10.5.1. I'm not sure if this is specific to MacBook Pros, or if the issue is the same on all 10.5 machines.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the USB problem. When I insert my USB memory pen, it flashes then stops. The icon doesn't come up on the Desktop, but the memory shows up on the System Profiler.
My USB telephone responds in Skype, but the sound input and output don't show up in Preferences, and so the phone doesn't work.
My Vodaphone USB internet modem won't connect.
This morning, I have no sound at all.
All these problems are resolved if the computer is restarted with the external source already plugged in, but it's a big hassle and must be solvable............

  • I am unable to back up to external drive since loading lion

Since installing Lion my Western Digital external drive refuses to cooperate with Time Machine - any thoughts?

Attempting an update without a backup is not a very smart idea.
When was the last time the device was backed up?
What is the exact message when the backup fails?
Personally, I have found that simply ejecting the device, disconnecting then reconnecting resolves random "unable to backup" issues.

  • Transferring video files from camera to external drive.

    Forum,
How do I transfer video, or indeed can I, to an external drive using Firewire?
I can connect the camera with Firewire 400 to the computer and the external drive with F/wire 800.
I have not tried because i do not want damage my kit.
    Thank you
    Michael Craven.

Just connect the drive and see if you can capture to it... many times you can, but sometimes you can't... depends on the FW bridge in the drive. If it's fast enough, you won't have a problem. You won't hurt anything trying at any rate. If it drops frames or something, then a firewire card added to your system to create a second firewire bus will fix you right up.

  • TC Mounting hard drive and mounting /seeing attached external drive

    Hi All
Recently bought a TC and I am not sure if it is not set up correctly or if it just is not meant to do what I think it should.
I can set up the TC via wireless and cable and that works fine, well sort of. Backups happen etc.
    My problems are:
-when I connect an external harddrive via the USB of the TC I cant see it anywhere. Should I be able to see it somehow?
-I am unable to connect to the TC harddrive in the usual way same as when you connect a external drive or other computer etc. I can see the harddrive contents via the Time Machine app. Should I be able to see this drive easliy?
    Thanks

Connect your USB drive to your TC.
Start the airport utility, click on your TC, and click manual setup.
Then, click on disks: it should appear here.
To confirm that you can see it, start finder. Your TC should appear on the left
Click on the TC, and in the right, it should show both the TC disk and your USB disk also.
    Hope that helps

  • Unable to mount USB NTFS hard drive on mac

I am trying to mount an iomega ego 1 TB USB hardrive on my mac pro.
The drive is formatted for windows. Normally you could at least see the drive mount. To help make it writeable from the mac I am using FUSE and Tuxera NTFS. After a clean reinstallation of snow leopard and update with the latest patches etc... This was working fine. The drive was seen by OSX and i could read/write to it without issues.
I then went about restoring some applications with the mac migration tool. Since that was done the drive no longer mounts to the desktop.
I see the following error in the console logs:

did one of my migrated apps kebosh something? Any suggestions are welcome.

Those errors sound like your drive is having serious trouble. It is probably time to look for a replacement for it. I certainly hope everything on that disk is backed up.

  • How to create mount point from external drive directory

    Hi,
Is it possible to create a mount point pointing directly to an external drive directory?
For example I would like to have /Volumes/Media point to my external eSATA drive /eSATA/Media
What I am trying to achieve is that I can see a virtual drive in Finder called "Media"
This is important because when this external drive is connected on my NAS Server the /eSATA/Media directory
shows up as a mounted drive called "Media" alse (through afp).
What I want is to see "Media" pointinf to  /eSATA/Media regardles if it is connected directly to my MacBook or connected on my NAS.

  • Not Recognizing Camera When External Drive in Use

I have FCP3 installed successfully on my new G5, and when I use a external drive (G-drive Q), my camera (gl-2) is [missing]. When I turn the drive off, it works just fine. I've looked around the forum and the quicktime reciept thing doesn't seem like the solution (there are no 703, ### takes). Any Help? Please?!

. I'd rather not have to buy a new card. Any other solutions? Are people having the same problems with FCP 5? It seems like it is a case of you need to buy this to buy this to have this run on that, but only after buying this plus upgrading to that...
Well, video requires configurations that work. Firewire capture drives are not recommended.
You have an internal additional SATA bay. Spend $80.00 and install a 160 Gb SATA drive in it.
That's to me at least a minimum configuration.
It isn't an upgrade; it's an essential part of video editing.

  • Detect both camera and external drive?

I am trying to work with final cut and am having some issues...when I attach both my 9pin external drive, and my mini dv to 6pin firewire, it only detects one...whichever I put in first. As you can imagine this is a problem.
I need both! Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Welcome to the forum.
Daisy-chain the camera through the drive (works sometimes) or get yourself and express card for the MBPro. This can be either eSata or FW.
Your problem is you're trying to run both pieces of gear on a single FW bus.
If it's a Canon camera, you might also try changing your 'Device Control Preset' to NTSC-Firewire Basic, if you're working with MiniDV. This helps with Canon's notoriously funky FW protocols.
What format are your working with...and make/model of camera?

  • New 13" MBP won't mount or recognize external drives via FW 800

    Hi all,
I have a brand new 13" MBP. I have two external 750GB Lacie drives that were formatted for MacOS on my previous 13" MacBook. I mounted these drives via USB on the older laptop.
Neither of these drives will mount on my new laptop via the FW 800 ports. I've tested two cables on both drives and nothing works. Also, neither of the drives appear via disk utility when using FW 800. The drives do however appear when using USB.
Is my FW 800 port faulty? Could it be something else? Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem to you - my external drive is not recognised by my MacBook Pro when using FW800 but it is when using USB2.
Did you have any luck getting your firewire to work properly?

Ex-windows user wants to know: All my music is stored in an external drive. How do I get to add all these into itunes library or play them?

Open iTunes and drag the folder which contains the music into the open iTunes window; iTunes will then copy the music to the hard disk and add it to the library.
