Unable to mount Time Machine volume w/o Time Machine
I am happily using Lion Server to support network backup for a MacBook. It works very nicely, and does both backups and restores well. However, I wanted to look at some files in an old archive, so, on the server itself, I went to the relevant volume:Shared Items:Backups:whatever.sparsebundle and tried to open it and got a "No mountable filesystems" error. The volume still mounts nicely for backup, but I cannot access it from the server or a third machine. This is not due to interference with an ongoing backup. (I turned off Time Machine backups for safety.)
Is Lion Server using an incompatible sparsebundle format for its backups?
Try copying using Disk Utility/Restore. It will reformat the destination drive, so remove any data before copying.

Unable to mount XSAN volume on client workstation
We just reimaged one of our machines and we are now unable to mount the xsan volume. Originally when the machine hooked up the IP was wrong and the XSAN couldn't see it. This has been fixed and the XSAN sees it now and it is authenticated, but when we try to mount the volume we get this error

The *'s was the name of the machine, apple has been little to no help. We have tried removing the machine form the XSAN and then adding it back in, same issue. Tried reinstallingt eh client, same issue. Any ideas? This is the error on server

Unable to prevent Time Machine backing up volume mounted from sparsebundle
I have a password-protected sparsebundle that contains my financial files, private data, etc, which I mount as a volume at startup. It's about 8GB. If I'm going to be away from my computer for a bit, I'll unmount the volume as an extra security measure.
I don't need or want Time Machine to back up the files INSIDE the volume, just the sparsebundle itself. If I needed to access a backup of a file inside the volume, I'd rather just pull up an earlier version of the sparsebundle, mount it, and find the file in there.
However, I've recently discovered that I can't exclude the mounted volume from Time Machine backups in the usual way - the volume name is greyed out when I go through the System Preferences/Time Machine pane, and won't let me select it to be excluded from backup.
So what's happening is that TM is backing up the contents of the volume, which is showing up as folders on the TM backup drive. Inside these folders is the complete listing (and actual data) of all the files in my secured volume!
Even if I UNmount the volume from my system, it's still possible to access the data via Time Machine.app (and via Finder, on the TM backup disk).
So, essentially, even though I've password protected the sparsebundle CONTAINING the data, all a person needs to get the data is to have access to my user account on my Mac, and they can get the data via the above methods.
Is there any way to allow TM to back up the sparsebundle itself, but not the listing of the contents (and data) of the mounted image?
It seems odd that I can exclude the volume contents from being indexed by Spotlight, but can't exclude them from being specifically backed up by Time Machine.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!I have exactly the same issue. I cannot exclude the content of mounted disk images from my backup using the GUI (strangely on my other computer the content is not backuped).
I have manually edited with a text editor the preference file (Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist) today (I am using 10.6.3) and added in the SkipPaths section the mounting point of the disk image (typically /Volumes/NameofDisk ). So far so good. The corresponding folder appears in the backup but is empty.

Unable to configure Time Machine backups to shared volume on network
I've been unable to coax Time Machine (TM) into using a networked shared volume that SuperDuper! accesses without a hitch.
My wife and I have laptops (TiBook and MacBook Pro, respectively), and we have a G4 Mac Mini with an external 300 GB HD. The Mini is connected to a wired Ethernet port on a GigE Airport base station (I've long ago given up on connecting that HD to the Airport). Our laptops connect wirelessly. All three machines are now running 10.5, and I've checked that the Mini is sharing the external HD via System Preferences. My wife and I both have accounts on the Mini, and those accounts provide read/write access on the external HD. Mounting that volume from our laptops works perfectly, as does backing up to it using SuperDuper! TM, however, doesn't recognize that volume as a backup location.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
AndreasAdapting the instruction in this post worked for us. I connected to the Mini via ssh and entered the commands to enable the external HD. It then showed up as a TM backup location on both of our computers, and the progress meters for the initial backup are ticking away.
Cheers,

Unable to Mount "Mac OS standard" Volumes
I am unable to mount volumes of file system "Mac OS standard." In this case I am trying to mount an image I made of a Starcraft BroodWars CD, but my computer claims that the file is damaged. However it says this of all of my saved images and I find this to be unlikely. I attempted to burn the image to disk using the Disk Utility, but even while disk utility seems to recognize the CD, it will still not mount it. Attempts to verify the disk yield the error:
Verifying volume “Brood War CD”
Checking HFS volume.
Invalid number of allocation blocks
Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Any advice?Yes, I think you need to repair your hard drive from your disk. Did you try to reset the Pram?
If my advise is something you already tried, remember there is no way for me to know this.
If you want instructions on either, post back.
I wish you well.

My MacBook Pro with 750GB storage refuses to startup due to a problem with logic board (unfortunately I'm in Singapore and there is no Apple store here and zero customer support). I'm trying to access some of the files from the time machine back-up using my MacBook Air with 120GB storage, but I'm unable to open the backup. I receive an error message "you don't have permission to see its contents". Unable to access time machine backup. The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
I don't really want to migrate the data from the time machine to the MacBook Air as I simply don't have sufficient storage space on the MacBook Air. The iPhoto library which I'm trying to access is 200GB, which is more than the size of the MacBookAir.
Is there any way I can view the photos and documents stored on the time machine backup.
Thank you very much. When you setup the Mac, you created a Admin user account with say name X
You ran Migration Assistant and it migrated user Y from the Windows machine.
User Y has different permissions than User X.
User X can't normally access User Y's account.
So what you do is log out of User X via the Apple menu and into User Y, this way you have permission to access the files.
If you want to transfer files from User Y to User X account
Transfer files between user accounts on the same machine instructions
Finder > Go menu > Computer
A window appears with your boot drive, double click on it to open
Inside is Users folder, double click to open it
Inside is your User accounts, double click on the one you want to send files too
Double click on the Public folder drop the files into the DropBox folder,
The permissions will change and can be used in the other user account when you log into it and moved to the appropriate folders.
Applications are typically installed and kept in the Applications folder which is a global access folder all users can access to run them from, but not all users can modify unless they are a Admin user.
Windows programs won't run on a Mac, but they can be instaled into a virtual machine program that is running Windows.

0 B Page-outsThe panic was apparently caused by "LittleSnitch," maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed. I suggest you remove it and also "Avast."
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it throws false warnings, destabilizes and slows down your computer, and sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions. Restart.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above. -
I'm unable to get a disk partition to mount. The partition has/had 10.6 installed and I was probably doing something I shouldn't have while installing windows on a separate partition. Since then, I am unable to start-up from that mac drive.
I had to create a new partition and install OSX again. When I open disk utility it sees the old drive but it is grey-out. When I run repair disk everything is ok but once I click to mount the drive I get a message that "The disk could not be mounted. Try running repair disk and then retry mounting", which seems to be an endless cycle that does not work. I've tried using Techtool and Drive Genius and they recognize and "repair" the disk but I am still unable to mount it.
Any suggestions?I erased the windows partition and created a new partition with disk utility and installed OSX. I don't want to erase the old partition because I would like to extract what I can before erasing to entire hard drive. I have backup thru time machine but I want to make I have everything.

Mtmfs: mount failed for /Volumes/MobileBackups 9
Hello, I looked over the net and couldn't find an answer my problem.
The new MobileBackup feature in Lion doesn't work, error [1] keeps popping every 5 seconds. Looking over the System Diagnostic Reports I see that mtmfs keeps crashing regularly with the same errror [2].
It seems to me that mtmfs is looking for some executable that it can't find, but it's not clear from the log which one is that. Also I wonder why just MobileBackup 9?
Please I'm thinking about reinstalling Lion just so I can get ride of this annoying error.
Let me know if you require more information.

Unable to mount SD cards - SCSI disks
I have a generic, cheap, all in one usb card reader and am unable to mount sd cards on my system. I tried a few days back with a friends similar sort of card reader with the same outcome. I've got 3 sd cards to hand, one brand new, all of which seem to work fine on my Canon DSLR camera.

We are on Exchange 2007
We have one database that will not mount. Whenever we try to mount we get the below error
Exchange is unable to mount the database that you specified. Specified database: EXG01\SG3-DB\SG3-DB; Error code: MapiExceptionJetDatabaseCorruption: Unable to mount database. (hr=0x80004005, ec=-338)
I ran the eseutil /mh against the DB & found the database to be in clean shutdown state. I moved all the log files and chk files to another location and tried mounting the DB but the very same error.

Kernel panic since upgrade to core. Unable to mount root fs on
kernel panic : not syncing; VFS; Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
I get that error since I upgraded archlinux to the latest version. The last time I upgraded before that was while the repos was still named current. Since I upgraded to core that happened.
What should I do? How could I fix this? I have this problem on the fallback kernel too.
Last edited by sokuban (2007-09-23 01:49:57)Hello All,
I have two hard drives installed in my pc, one is ATA and the other one is a SATA.
ATA is /dev/sda 200GB
SATA os /dev/sdb 40GB
I have installed arch linux onto sdb. grub also is installed to sdb.
Whenever I do a pacman -Syu and reboot I get the kernel panic not synching attempted to kill init error message at boot
I then boot the pc using the fallback image and copied the fallback config to /etc/mkinicpio.conf and ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26 and rebooted. everything works fine. but just running the command pacman -Syu and rebooting will end up with the same problem. though pacman -Syu does not install any updates. what is it that I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

Error on install, CDROM not booting Kernel, unable to mount CDRM, what now?
Please help. I am new to this, so as many options as possible would be a help.
So far here are the steps I've taken to install Solaris 8 (Intel):
1. Checked HCL - I have two CD ROM's I've tried, both are on the list. (Mitsumi FX140S and Sony DVD DDU220E)
2. Set BIOS to boot CDROM - Boot failure..., I have set and changed jumpers back and forth from Master to Slave. I have moved CDROM drive from primary Slave to secondary Master and secondary Slave.
3. I have downloaded and used the Device Config Assistant boot floppy. It boots and checks devices. It also recognizes the CDROMs I have (both CDROMs are not have installed at the same time).
4. I have selected whichever CDROM I have installed as the default boot device (*) using F4_Boot Tasks. I have also adjusted timeouts from 0,1,2 and 3 seconds and have had autoboot ON/OFF.
5. I have entered F2 to continue and I receive this error:
Unable to mount a Solaris root file system from the device:
CD : (*) Target 1, MITSUMI CD-ROM FX140S !B e12 on Bus Mastering IDE controller on Board PCI bus 0, at Dev 4, Func 1
Error message from mount:
/pci@0,0/pci-ide@4,1/ide@0/sd@1,0:a: can't open - no hsfs VTOC
Press Enter to Continue.
I have inserted all 3 CD I have created with the same results from each. The CDs have the .iso extention and were created using Easy CD Creator.
Please, Please, Please, ANY suggestions!!
LLFirst off you don't need to set your CDROM as the default boot device to install Solaris, that's why we have the Solaris DCA boot diskette. And also only the Solaris Installation CD and Software 1 of 2 are bootable CDs, the software 2 of 2 is NOT.
Once you finish downloading the images from Sun's website you need to not only add the .iso extension to the ending of each image file but use the option "Burn using CD image" under the File menu in Easy CD creator.
If you try and view the burned CD under Windows you will only see a small number of the actual files that are on the CD. And NO you will not see the .vtoc file and will not be able make one yourself.
My suggestion would be to try and burn a new CD with the above instructions and boot with the Solaris DCA and continue pressing F2 until you get to the point where it asks you select where you want to boot the kernel from. At that point put with ther Installation CD or Software 1 of 2 in your drive and attempt to boot from it.
Keep us updated on your progress.

[Solved] unable to mount harddisk partition or flash drive
After recent updates to gnome 3.4.2,i am unable to mount harddisk partition or flash drive .I have 2 year old arch installation with gnome.
When i click on partitions in nautilus,it says "Unable to mount program files \n Not authorized to perform operation"
Problem is not only while mounting partitions.
Wherever we need authorization .Like changing date and time ,changing user accounts using gnome UI etc.The unlock button is greyed out permanently.
even i am not able to shutdown using gnome menus. it just log me out only ,do not restart or shutdown.Though i can shutdown using shutdown command on commandline.
i run gnome using daemon method. not through xinitrc .
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25031?p … ekit#close
I found a similar discussion in this bug. But since, i do not use xinitrc, it is unlikely they will help me.
Can someone be kind enough to help me on this?
Thanks in advance.
