Unable to move project from external drive back to FCPX.

The HD was recently replaced in my iMac. Fortunately I had backed up my FCPX events and projects to folders on an external drive. I have down loaded FCPX again to the new HD but I'm unable to move my project back into FCPX. Having opened FCPX, I then open the project library, select the external drive, open the folder containing my project but the  "current version fcpproject"  is grey  (not available). I was however able to drag the "fcpevent" file into the event library.
Any help will be appreciated

Since there is no disclosure triangle on your external showing in your project library, there are two possibilities:
1) There are no projects presently located on the drive.
2) Project files are on the drive but FCP can't see them because they are not at the root level of the drive.
So either way, to straighten this out you will have to move some files in the Finder – even though best practices (as both Tom and Luis have pointed out) are to stay within FCP to do that.
Move the existing CurrentVersion file to a temporary folder to hide it from FCP.
Unless you know that the Ball project is at a specific location on your external, do a spotlight search on Final Cut Projects. If something comes up, with FCP closed, navigate to it in the Finder and move it to the root level of the external drive. Then open FCP and it should now be accessible in your project library.  Select it in the library; go to File>Move Project. Things should now work.
But if you don't have another copy on your external, open FCP and hot the plus button at the bottom of project library and create a new project. That will create a Final Cut Projects Folder in your Movies folder (which is where it should be in your home directory). Close FCP. Open the temp file and drag the CurrentVersion file that you hid to the Final Cut Projects folder.
Hopefully, you wil now be able to get back to work.

  • Duplicating Projects From External Drive.

    Hello,
I am making a film about 3.5 hrs in length ( after edit ). My problem is, I have a 1TB computer with about 300gb left, and a 3 tb hard drive with about 6 gb left. I generally try to do most of my editing on the external hard drive to keep my computer uncluttered until I get down to the final stages of editing then I will transfer the edited footage back to my Mac. Out of a 210gb event, I maybe use 40-60 gb total. In the past I have used duplicate with referenced events. I am curious as to what the duplicate with the used clips does? Can I still edit those clips after? What If i duplicated the project only, can I still edit on mac HD? I would be duplicating projects from the external to the mac hd. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Assuming you are working on a version prior to 10.1:
I'm not sure I understand your organization or workflow.
If you want to create a new version project by duplicating it and moving to your boot drive and have it reference events on your external, that will work.
If you duplicate projects and used clips FCPX will create new copies of any clip, in its unedited length, that you have used in your project. It will also create a new event for those clips.
Just to say that it's hard to see you're gaining anything by moving your media around like you describe in the finall stages of editing. It isn't necessary – or even desirable – to have the project and event on the boot drive at any stage.
Finally, although you didn't ask, having 6 GB free space out of 3 TB is really pushing it to the extreme, Either archive a lot of nonessential files to free up a minimum of 500 GB or buy a new drive (or two). Speaking of which, I hope that all of this is backed up somehow.

  • How do I move files from external drive to Itunes on computer?

I am doing a system recovery and have saved my Itunes folder on an external drive.  How do I get the data back into Itunes?

Install iTunes, the same version you had when you saved your music folder.
    When done, don't run iTunes.
Copy the content of your itunes folder (iTunes Media, iTunes library...) from your external HD to /user/music/itunes
Run iTunes. You should see your content and playlists.

  • How do i move photos from external drive to iphone

Currently i run on the Mac Pro Retina,
Since this doesn't have much storage i recently moved my entire 40Gb iPhoto onto an external drive. This worked great and love the new storage i have on my mac.
I plug my GoPro into my mac and it imports the photos onto the iPhoto on my external drive.
However the problem occurs when i try get those new photos onto my iPhone, i plug it in and go to photos on my phone in iTunes and it only shows my old iPhoto stuff, so i can't get those new photos across to my iPhone. I've tried the choose file option and chosen external drive but i doesn't seem to work?
And help as to how i can get these photos across would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to remove the iPod Photo Cache from your iPhoto library? Perhaps it is corrupted.
Try this:    iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
if removing the cache does not change anything, try repairing your iPhoto library by holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘  and launching iPhoto while holding down both keys firmly, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel. Select the option "Repair Database" and press "Repair".

  • Cant move projects to external drive

The instructions I have, say to drag the project to the extenal drive that is showing in the event library.  It does nothing when I drag the project?
    Thanks,

This is an error in the Help files. What you need to do is drag the project to the external drive that shows up in the PROJECT library. If you scroll up you should see it.

  • How to move files from external drive to main drive WITH keywords?

On a recent trip, I uploaded several thousand images onto an external hardrive that I was using with my laptop.I keyworded and edited these files while on the road.
Back home, I want to move the files (keywords and all) to my permanent LR library which resides on a different hard drive. How can I make this transfer without losing keywords?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Jessica,
There seems to be a confusion of terms here: the catalog is where LR stores all its information (what your referred to as LR's library in your original post).
While you were on the road, did you use LR to add keywords to the photos, or did you use some other tool? If you used LR, than you already have a catalog on the laptop, which you can then import into your main LR catalog (using the Import from Catalog option from the File menu). Let us know if you get stuck anywhere.

  • Transfer iMovie project from external drive??

I posted this on the iMovie forum with no luck. I thought I would try here in case it was a Snow Leopard issue.
My Apple died, so I transferred everything from the external backup to my new apple. It was all backed up with Time Machine. Everything went perfect except for my iMovie Project. It copied well, but I cant open it. The message says:
If the project is already on your hard disk, then the disk may be completely full, or you may not have permission to modify that folder. Correct the problem and try again.
the computer hard drive shows 28 GB are open for use (this is after the iMovie project was transferred over). I had this problem before on this new computer because I was using it for my business and had an administrative account separate from the guest account so others did not have access to some files. Anyway, I found out that I could open the iMovie project on the guest account but not with the administrative account. I still can not open it with the administrative account. I thought the administrative account was the only account I had now. There is a guest account which is disabled. I enabled and tried that, but when I logged in, the desktop did not even include the hard drive??
Anyway, I do not want to have to go to the guest account to work on my project, I only want access to everything on the one account.
When I check the permissions for the file. It shows that there are two "Everyone" listings with the icon of 3 people. One of them has "Custom" as a privilege and the other one has "Read & Write" as a privilege. I don't know what any of this means.
I know I said a lot. I was hoping to give as much info as possible.
    Please help.
    Thank You

I fixed it. I kept playing around with privileges until I found the right option. I have it now, thank you.
I did this earlier but no luck. I am good now.

  • How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive

How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive?
    Thank You

Every working drive, Internal or External, should produce an Icon on your Desktop. If you cannot see those, click on the Desktop (to get Finder) and choose Preferences off the Finder Menu. The general pane has checkboxes for "Show these items on the Desktop:"
Double click the Icon for your External Drive to open it. Open the folders on it until you find the Items you want to copy. Drag them to the Icon of your Internal Drive, or open the folder where you want them to land and drop them in there.
A drive that does not appear on the desktop after you have asked it to may be damaged. But it would be smart to do a Restart to see if it is recognized again at next Startup.

  • How do I move projects from aperture to create space and keep images on external hard drive

How do I move projects from my iMac aperture 3 to an external hard disk so I keep all originals and create space on my iMac

Do you want to move your complete Aperture library to an external volume or only selected projects?
Get yourself an external drive that is formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) and connect it to a fast port, Thunderbolt, USB 3, for example.
As a precaution repair your Aperture library using the Aperture Library First Aid Tools (Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual) and make a current backup, before you proceed.
To move all projects to that drive simply drag your Aperture library to the external drive. Then click it in the Finder to launch Aperture on the new library and test it thoroughly, before you delete the old library.
To move selected projects to the new drive, select the projects in Aperture and use the command "FIle > Relocate originals" and select a folder on the external drive as the destination in the File Chooser. See: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images

  • Editing Old Project from External Hard Drive

Last year my G5 developed an incurable Kernel error issue. I decided to buy a new iMac and have been very pleased. I backed up my system to an external hard drive and now I would like to access an old project from the external drive.
I selected the external drive and went to the last date of my backup. However, this is where I have no idea how to complete this task. Can I simply open FCE and import the project from the drive? Will all of the media transfer over?
Would really like to know the ins and outs before I begin and paint myself into a corner. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Tom:
Not sure what you mean by "restore". I am assuming I will need to do the following:
    1. Open FCE
    2. Import the old project from my external drive
    3. This is where I get lost. Can you please fill in the blanks from her for me. I cannot seem to find the instructions to do this anywhere.
    Thanks!

  • Movies re-imported from external drive after crash will not sync to iPod

A while back my hard drive crashed. I had backed up all my iTunes music and movies to an external drive, so I re-imported them to the repaired hard drive after it was installed. All of the music (purchased and ripped) transferred fine, but the movies I had purchased from iTunes will not sync back to my iPod. I've tried selecting them individually under the Movies tab in the "My iPod" screen within iTunes and then syncing, but nothing happens. I've tried re-importing from iTunes and doing the same thing, but to no avail. Help!

while the iPod is connected to itunes, control-click on its name in the source list on the left. click Reset Warnings. try another sync with the movies you want selected. you should get a warning that says either something like this: "There is not enough room on the iPod to sync all selected material. please remove some items." or something like this: "the format of the videos is not supported by the iPod" if it says the first one, do option 1. if it is the second one, do option 2. if it is neither of them, i don't have any ideas.
1.The iPod doesn't have enough space on it to fit all of the video. you have to take someting off the ipod to put anything more on.
    2. you need to select the movies in iTunes, then go to the advanced menu and click Create iPod/iPhone Version, or Convert for iPod or iPhone, whichever appears. that will make a copy of the videos in a format that the ipod can read. you can remove the original copy from your library. you can keep the files if you want. now just select the new ones and sync them. everything should work.

i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.
