Unable to network print to HP Color LaserJet 2600n connected to Windows PC

I just got a new MacBook Pro and I am trying to print on my network to a HP Color LaserJet 2600n that is connected and shared on a Windows PC. I have carefully followed the instruction posted on http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3015.html and I am still unable to print. I made sure the printer name on the remote PC has no spaces. After I enter (on my Mac) my user name and password to access the user account on the remote Windows PC, I get the following error message:
Unable to connect to server with the provided password and user name. Error: 256
Please help! Thank you!
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The Windows PC is running the Windows XP Firewall, the Avast Antivirus, and Windows Defender. I have deactivated all these applications and the issue persists.
I called Apple today (I am still in my 90-day free support since this is a new MacBook Pro). After some basic troubleshooting with a tier one rep, I was transfered to a tier 2 rep who told me after making sure that I was following the right steps to try to add the printer, that since the HP LaserJet 2600n printer is connected to a Windows XP computer, my set-up is not supported by Apple and declined continuing troubleshooting the issue. According to this person Apple will only support network printing when the printer is directly attached to a hub/router.

  • Color troubles printing to HP Color Laserjet 2600n

We are a school with a networked environment that includes about 40 Macbook Pros and 60 iMacs. Included in there are several eMacs and PCs. Over the past several weeks, our HP Color LaserJet 2600n printers have begun to exhibit printing where rather than the normal color printing, there appears to be added black toner on the print jobs. The PCs and eMacs are not exhibiting this problem at all, thus I eliminated the fuser possibility. I looked more at a potential driver issue.
These 2600n printers are shared out to the MBPs and iMacs via Workgroup Manager. They connect to these printers via Bonjour for printing. We do have an 802.11n wifi network with multiple SSIDs but no matter if it is cnonected over SSID or over wired gigabit ethernet, the problem still exists.
I tried printing via IP address, but the computers would not readily recognize the printers during setup, and when I manually selected the driver, the computers could not connect to the printer.
So, I am trying to figure out why all of a sudden these print jobs are exihibing severe color issues.

OK, I think I might have a solution. I have not tested it but I need to do a bit more research. What I have discovered is that it might be a Firmware issue. We found one that is still working fine and it actually has the older firmware numbered 20050610. The ones were are having the issues with are on firmware numbered 20070716.
I am going to see if I can revert the firmware... if I can find the older firmware!

  • Grayscale Printing with HP Color Laserjet 2600n Using OS 10.6

Like a lot of people, I've been frustrated with the (lack of) support and functionality with this printer since upgrading to Snow Leopard. But at least it's working.
    I have two questions:
    1. Even with the printer set to Grayscale, all of my pages come out in color. Does anyone have a solution to this?
    2. Has anyone found a good alternative printer to the 2600n that works well with Snow Leopard?
    Thanks everyone
    Steven

    Hi,
Firstly please check to see if your printer in the list:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
If YES, you can use this to fix/setup:
    iPad: http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/airprint/
    iPhone: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/airprint/
If NO you have to print using other apps (if applicable) such as
       http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/hp-eprint/id299531647?mt=8

  • Fresh install of 10.6.2 can't add HP Color LaserJet 2600n to printers.

    From the start:
Just got my laptop back from Apple (replaced mainboard) and decided to start over so I upgraded the HD to a 500 GB and reinstalled the System fresh. No personal files added yet. I also ran all of the Software Updates as normal and here it sites now with this problem when I went to add my printer:
The HP Color LaserJet 2600n is connected to the Airport wireless network by direct Ethernet cable to the router. The MacBook is connected via Wi-Fi.
Add Printer sees the HP printer via Default/Bonjour. Click it, name it, it already chose "HP Color LaserJet 2600n" for Print Using: (driver). At the very bottom it says in small print "The selected printer software is available from Apple. Click Add to download it and add this printer." I click add and immediately a pop up says "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem. The selected printer software is available from Apple, but you are not connected to the Internet."
So I can't add the printer although I can see it! This is bogus. It worked before. And how could it "know" Apple has the driver if the Internet connection wasn't working? Well, the Internet connection IS working. That is the other part of this that makes no sense. It works fine. I'm on the very same connection right now typing this. Software Update gave me no issues using it going through Software Update and not the printer driver update part..
    What gives?

Can't help with the wireless muckup since I don't that. Two options. One, hook up directly, bypassing the wifi stuff, and try adding it. Or, two, download the update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

  • Unable to print to an HP Color LaserJet 2600n in 10.4.11

Hi (I really, truly have gone through the other topics and can't find a solution).
I'm trying to print on a G3 iMac via USB to an HP Color Laserjet 2600n. The printer driver is not included with Apple, and when I went to download it from the HP site (complete package for G3 computers running OS 10.3 or 10.4) it says there are no files to mount. I downloaded the same thing for a G3 running Panther and it installed perfectly and that iMac prints to the 2600n without a problem. I then downloaded the driver for G4s using the 2600n onto the G3 running 10.4.11 and while it installed fine and the print setup recognizes the printer, the printer will not print. It goes through "starting job" gets to "processing job" and stays there forever. I was on Customer Support with HP, and as a result of installing the printer on my older iMac, we've deduced the problem must be with the software on the G3 that won't print (the one running 10.4.11)
I read somewhere that with this HP printer and some others the job gets processed on the computer itself and then is sent to the printer. Clearly, the iMac is not processing the job.
I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, redownloaded, etc. etc. I don't know what to do. I installed Ghostscript et al, but there is no driver there for the 2600n. I've tried generic postcript and it doesn't work- in that case the print box goes for a few seconds and then says "printing stopped."
It's only this printer- this iMac with 10.4.11 prints to two other printers via a Bonjour network (an HP 2015 and an HP 2300n). But I'd like access to a color printer. Any thoughts? Any ideas? Why won't the complete G3 package install on this iMac when it will on the one running Panther? And why won't it process the print job?

OK. So you began by trying to install the same package you installed on the Panther machine? It sounds as though the file got corrupted during the download if the system couldn't mount the disk image. Anyway, you then downloaded a different package for G4 machines and installed that on your G3 machine but this didn't work.
Are you sure about this? Do HP really have different packages for G4 and G3 Macs? If so, you will need the G3 package for a G3 Mac. Can you point me to the HP download page listing the drivers so I can take a look? That way I should be able to see exactly what you've tried so far.
OK, I found the page. There isn't a G4 package as such but the G3 one is supposed to run on Tiger so that is likely the one you need.
Is the printer's firmware up to date? I notice there's an update utility for it, too.
It goes through "starting job" gets to "processing job" and stays there forever. I was on Customer Support with HP, and as a result of installing the printer on my older iMac, we've deduced the problem must be with the software on the G3 that won't print (the one running 10.4.11)
This doesn't follow. It could be that HP's drivers don't work properly on Tiger but do on Panther. That could as easily be HP's fault as anybody else's. (It might not be their fault, but the fact that their driver works on Panther doesn't necessarily mean that driver - or another driver - will work on Tiger.)
I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, redownloaded, etc. etc. I don't know what to do.
When you uninstalled, how exactly did you remove the installation? Please give me as many details as you can.
I installed Ghostscript et al, but there is no driver there for the 2600n.
Why did you think installing GS might help? Ghostscript doesn't provide print drivers as far as I know (though it is involved - or can be involved - in printing processes).

  • Networking a HP color laserjet 2600n printer on windows 7 (64-bit)?

    Hello,
Have an HP Color Laserjet 2600n printer and are running Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit). I installed >> HP Color LaserJet 2600n Plug and Play Package off of HP website [ http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=446154&p... ]. The drivers work fine if you connect via USB port but unfortunately there's no way to connect via network.  Can anyone give me guidance on how to connect the 2006n via a network on windows 7 (64-bit)?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.

Have you plugged the printer into your router and does it have a proper IP address?  If so:
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.

  • Can't print with HP Color LaserJet dn2605

I haven't been able to print my HP Color LaserJet from Early 2008 Mac Pro using 10.9.4.  I have attempted to print on the network and USB to no avail.  I have deleted the printer, reset all printers and scanners.  Once I delete or reset the printers, I always have to recycle/rebounce the printer so it can be found.  Once found and I select it by the "Use" drop down, there are two(2) HP Color LaserJet 2605 profiles.  I can select either one and sets-up the printer.  Once I attempt to use the printer, the print job goes to the queue and few minutes later the printer starts initiating and sounds like that a paper is getting ready to move and it stops or quits.  I then receive the yellow light a problem occurs, thats all the farther it goes.  I have the latest printer driver update 19.9..  I also have reloaded the OS 3-4 times.  Here is what I receive the print queue when it fails: "Stopped - Unable to write print data: Broken pipe".

That's sounding like a printer problem, not software.
But just in case, try deleting the HP folder from /Library/Printers, then Reset the Printing System and add the printer again.
OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
If that doesn't work, use a browser and connect to your router, and see if you can identify the printer in "connected devices."
(a printer that changes IP address whenever there is some change on your local net will give symptoms like that)

  • HP Color LaserJet 2600n and HP IP Printing

I was having trouble configuring my HP Color LaserJet 2600n for HP IP Printing. The following steps resovled the problem. Perhaps others may find this useful.
I just purchased an HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer at CompUSA. I was able to successfully connect it to my network and print using Bonjour Printing (from all of my various iMac, iBook, PowerBook and MacBook computers), but was not able to configure it for TCP/IP printing. To solve the problem,
    1. I visited the HP website and downloaded new firmware for the printer:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us &prodNameId=446154&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=446153&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEn vOID=219
There are 3 files there, I downloaded and installed all of them in the following order:
    2. HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer Firmware Update Utility - for some reason, the firmware on my new printer was from 2005 even though HP had posted new firmware as late as Dec 2006.
    3. HP color LaserJet 2600n DC controller firmware update utility - a firmware update that addresses a ghost-image issue.
    4. HP Color LaserJet 2600n OS X Universal Binary Full Software Solution - an updated set of drivers.
After all firmware and software was successfully updated....
    5. I opened /Applications/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility.app and click the "Default Browser" button at the top of the page.
    6. Clicked the "More Printers..." button at the bottom of the page.
    7. Set the popup at the top of the configuation pane to "HP IP Printing" and clicked the "Manual" button immediately below it.
    8. Entered the local network address for my printer (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and clicked the "Connect" button. The rest of the information in the panel was automatically filled in for me.
    9. Clicked the "Add" button. The printer was added to the list of available printers in the Printer List, although the name of the printer is set to the ID that is configured in the printer firmware.
    10. Select the new printer (NPIA0853X in my case) and click the "Show Info" button in the Printer List toolbar. Move the popup on the dialog to "Name and Location" and enter an new name (e.g., "HP Color LaserJet 2600n").

Download and run this on the XP machine.  I suspect a security system update or change, but let's let the utility tell us.

  • Network HP Color LaserJet 2600n is killing us!

We have a network printer, HP Color LaserJet 2600n and we cannot install it. We deploy Windows 2008 R2 (Virtual Server) printer server over IPP. Users we connect to http://servername/printserver and it will list all network printers. All other HP and Xerox printers working fine, except this 2600n printer won't work. I tried both 2600n driver and HP Universal Driver. Printer drivers installed on the server will have 'package false' for 2600n driver, and it seems installing good for the Universal driver.
However, as soon as users map to the printer, the print spool service will be killed. I did a test page directly on the server and it said test page sent successfully, but guess what, nothing coming out! I verified printer IPs, gateway, name all correct, I also update the firmware but no help. This printer was working fine in Novell environment, we just migrated our printers to MS platform.
Anyone experiences this and has a solution? Thanks.
PS. We have Intel CPUs, not ADM, so no compatible issues here.

I realize this is an old post, but hopefully it will help someone else.  Also had this issue.  The problem is that the 2600n wont work on 2008R2.  I've tried every driver I can think of.  The one driver that is causing your problem is the device specific 2600n driver.  You need to remove that driver entirely from the server and the client and try something else.  Good luck getting this printer to work.  Looks like we are going to end up replacing them.

  • Why does IE 9 say internal error and cannot print to Color Laserjet 2600n?

IE 9 displays message "Internal error, cannot print page" when I try to print to a networked Color Laserjet 2600n. Printing works well on my other networked HP printer.

The windows 8 driver for this printer should be available in late January. Please bookmark this site and visit it for up to date information. Also located on this site are links to documents for the network workaround and the in-os document.

Install HP print software via a network in Windows 8
As a test, I did install this using the windows 7 drivers, it printed fine but I received a pop up giving me an error printing but it still printed. I then used the network work around to shut the bi-di off and the pop up went away, again it printed fine. I would suggest if you use the windows 7 drivers, that you upgrade to the windows 8 drivers when they are available.

  • Adding a networked HP Color Laserjet 2600N

    Hi All;
I have an HP Color Laserjet 2600N that is connected to my home network. I assigned the printer a static IP, subnet, and GW address. I can ping the printer from both macs (New Macbool pro and an older G5 system), as well as my windows PC. The printer is connected to both the PC via USB as well as cat5 to the HP jetdirect card. I can even HTTP to the management portion of the printer from both macs. When I try adding the printer as an IP printer, the status view on the mac shows up as printer ready, but I cannot print a test page or anything. I even tried setting up to print to the PC as a print server and the mac sees it but doesnt print. I have tried the generic drivers, HP drivers, etc...An I missing something?

    Hi inglewood,
Can I suggest re-configuring the ToolBox.
Opening the HP Color LaserJet 2600nToolboxStart the HP Color LaserJet 2600n Toolbox using either of the following methods:
Click Start , Programs or All Programs (Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003), HP , HP Color LaserJet 2600n , and then HP Color LaserJet 2600n toolbox from the Microsoft Windows desktop.
Double-click the HP Color LaserJet 2600n toolbox icon on the Microsoft Windows desktop.
HP Toolbox TabsHP Color LaserJet 2600n Toolbox contains two independent windows which can be toggled back and forth: HP Color LaserJet 2600n Toolbox window category tabs and the Device Settings window category tabs.
HP Color LaserJet 2600n Toolbox window category tabs:
    Status tab
    Troubleshooting tab
    Alerts tab
    Documentation tab
From here you should be able to configure the frequency of report printing.
    Thanks.

  • XP pro-64bit issue printing to a color laserjet cp3800dn

    Need help troubleshooting this issue:
User is unsuccessful in printing to a Color LaserJet cp3800dn directly from an IP address.
I've tried to install the 64bit version of the driver - that didn't work
The version of XP is SP3.
Fortunately the user can print to this printer as a network shared resource. But when I tried to assign printer by IP address--because user wants to configure double-sided printing--i get the message "local downlevel document" failed to print. And I would have to cancel it from the print que.
I've tried to change the printer configuration to "print directly to printer" but seem to dislike that option because it freezes after selecting that option and try to print.
I've also tried to restart the computer once after installing HP printer drives and after making modifications to printer preferences, no luck.
Anyone encountered this issue before and have suggestions?

Phillip -- that did seem to work. Thanks!
One thing of note, after sleuthing it out a bit more, I realized that this happened after I was prompted by Apple's Software update to update the driver to version 1.1.1 (I think that was the number). that update seems to have broken Acrobat, so returning to the one on the Adobe site restores the functionality.
Perhaps this will be an alert to others not to install the Apple driver when prompted, though it's easy to let that slip by.
