Unable to Network with WinXP

Since getting my new iMac with Leopard on it I have been unable to do the following:
1. Find my HP printer that is connected to my WinXP machine.
2. Get ther WinXP machine to connect to my Mac (I get an error that says the Network Path is not found). Although the iMac shows up in the WinXP Workgroup (which I have named Vtphome).
3. By default, my older Mac running Tiger is in its own workgroup called "Workgroup" which is accessible by ALL the machines in my office. However the Leopard machine doesn't even show up in the generic "Workgroup".
This is extremely frustrating. I need to share/swap files during the course of the work day and use the printer connected to the one WinXP machine.
Does anyone have an idea of what the problems may be?
Thanks all.

Hello,
I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but I've got a couple of ideas for you. First, let's forget about the printer for now and let's see if we can get the iMac talking to the other machines.
1) JUST FOR THIS TEST - can you switch "off" all the firewalls on all of the machines. In Windows, go into Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click the connection > Click the Advanced tab > click Settings > Click OFF > Click OK, OK. If you have Windows XP SP2 it will complain that the firewall is switched off, just ignore it.
To turn off the firewall in Leopard, go to System Preferences > Security > select Allow all incoming connections.
I'm afraid I don't have a Tiger machine to hand, so I can't give precise instructions but you can use the search box in System Prefs to search for it.
Now that all firewalls are off, give the network a couple of minutes and then see if you can do what you want to do.
Don't forget, when you are done with these instructions to turn the firewalls back on, if you want to. I myself have a hardware firewall on my router between my network and the internet, so I leave all the computer firewalls off anyway. If you aren't sure - switch them all back on!
2) Set the Workgroup name in Leopard - go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > WINS. Set a useful NetBIOS name if you haven't done so already. Personally, I would set all of the machines (Mac and PC) to the same workgroup name.
3) On the Leopard machine, enable File Sharing. Go to System Preferences > Sharing. Set a useful computer name, and tick File Sharing. I think it sets up a "Public Folder" by default as your shared folder but you can always add other shared folders by clicking the + underneath and selecting another folder to share.
Once all of the above is set up at the same time, in theory you should be able to do what you want to do with file sharing. A couple of points to bear in mind - for computer names / netbios names, avoid spaces and when it's set up, give the computers a few minutes to start talking before you try to browse the network on any machine.
For the printer... I've struggled with this under Tiger before, but got it working under Leopard. How are you trying to add the printer?
If you are still having problems, if you could let me know the version of XP you are using (Home? Pro? SP2?) that would be useful.
In closing, don't forget once you have finished the tests to turn the firewalls back on unless you are confident enough to leave them off. In general, if your network is behind a hardware router that has it's own firewall, it's OK to leave each computers firewall off. But research before you do that - don't blame me if you leave them off and bad things happen!
Hope you find this helpful

  • IMac networked with WINXP

I have an Ethernet LAN network composed of an iMac G5 and a (Horrors) WIN98SE PC, using the FAT32 Disc format.
I can send DATA back and forth between these two machines with no trouble at all.
I have to add a WINXP Pro to this LAN Network mix.
I want to be able to send DATA back and forth in an usable format between the iMac and the WINXP machine and perhaps, also, the WIN98SE machine, over the LAN network, and perhaps using CD/DVDs.
Should I request the WINXP disc format to be FAT32 or its default NTFS?
I would sure appreciate receiving pertinent and helpful information about my problem.
I want to install this WINXPPro on the network before Christmas.
Please send any advice and help to
    JHBoatwright at bellsouth.net
    Thank you all very much,
    James Boatwright

JHBoatwright, Welcome to the discussion area!
When file sharing or accessing files across a network, the format of the files received has no relationship to how the drive is actually stored on a drive at the source machine.
Therefore the source machine can store the file on it's local drive in a format unknown to any other machine in the world. As long as the file sharing service on the source machine provides a standard format no one will be the wiser.
Therefore... it doesn't matter how the local drive connected to the XP machine is formatted as long as XP can read it.

  • Can't print over network with WinXP.

I have a HP LaserJet M1120 MPF and it's connected to a Windows XP desktop via USB. My MacBook uses the shared internet connection on the desktop through a wireless router, but I cannot set up the printer. I can see it, when I go to add a new printer, but I can't find the driver for it in the drivers list. Please, help.

I think I figured it out after torchering my self for weeks.
I had my computers and printers hooked up directly or wireless through a linksys WRT610N router.  I decided to add a linksys switch right after the router and plugged the computer and printers in through the switch and now it works.
This is very strange, there must be somekind of incompatibility with the WRT610N router that is causing the problem, it works but refused to print for some reason.  I tried changing settings in the router but haven't got it to work.
Any clues on what it could have been with the router?
    Thanks,

  • Unable To Communicate With Printer HP Officejet Pro 8600 (Network)

I recently purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8600. One morning a couple weeks ago I tried to print something and I received a prompt saying "Unable to Communicate with Printer (Network)". I turned off the printer and turned it back on which did not help, I then turned off my wireless network, turned it back on and still nothing. I finally figured out that I first have to turn off the printer, then turn off my wireless router wait thirty seconds, turn the router back on and the turn the printer back on. After these steps my printer was working. The next morning the same thing happened "Unable to Communicate with Printer (Network)" and I've been replaying Groundhog's Day ever since.
    Please help!

    Hello msheehy-
I would like to help you with this issue. It sounds like the router is changing the ip address of the printer. This could be caused by a couple reasons. (ip lease time, power loss to the router) I would recommend looking at the following link. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03781399&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4323648&tmp...
I think if you would set a static ip address in the printer EWS you would better off. I hope this helps.
Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.

  • Unable to connect to home wireless network with my iPod touch

I've had my iTouch for several months now and I'm still not able to connect to my wireless network at home. I've tried the resets and other suggestions I've found in the discussion groups but nothing has worked.
I have an older Netgear Router MR814v2 and it is unsecured. It is attached to my old desktop, HP Pavilion running Windows ME, which is not able to run the itunes software. My HP laptop is where my iTouch and iTunes software is installed.
The iTouch displays my network with good signal strength, but when I try to connect I get the "unable to join the network "NETGEAR".
Going to my router, it does not recognize my iTouch as an attached device. Why is that and what am I missing?
Thank you for all suggestions and your help.

I tried powering down the router. When it's off the iTouch does not recognize the network and then when it's powered on again, the iTouch recognizes the network. Unlike the public wi-fi spots that my iTouch responds to, where all the info like IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS etc are populated in the settings...my iTouch does not populate these fields at home even though it recognizes the network. I still get the unable to connect to network error. Could it be that my router is antiquated and can not support the iTouch? Like I said earlier, my Router does not recognize the iTouch as being attached to it.

  • Why can I connect to my home network with my iPhone 5 in one room, but when I move to another it is 'unable to connect to the network'

At home, I can connect my iPhone 5 to my home wifi network with no problems, as long as I stay downstairs.
As soon as I go upstairs my phone disconnects from the network. I can still see the home network it in the available network lists (with full signal strength), but when I try to reconnect I get an 'unable to connect to the network message'
If I move back downstairs it reconnects
This has only started happening in the past week or so
I've tried to forget and rejoin the network, but this doesn't work
I reset my network settings on the phone. This worked for a couple of hours and I could connect to the wifi upstairs, but now it won't connect again.
Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Sounds like your wi-fi signal strength has degraded.  Try rebooting your wi-fi router, or get it serviced.
Do you have similar issues with any other wi-fi routers?

  • HP Officejet 7500 E910 Network. When asked to print "Unable to Communicate with Printer"

My printer has been functioning well for some time.  When my some installed a new wireless modum I would often receive the error message "Unable to Communicate with Printer" but it would blink a few times, then connect and print.  As of three days ago I receive that message when trying to print from both of my laptops.  I am wireless and have checked the wireless signal and it is strong,  The wirless connect symbol is lit on the printer.  I ran a wireless Network Test Report on the printer and the results indicated no problems.
The printer woks if I use it manually to print or scan.  Neither printing nor scanning work when command is sent from my computer.  The Wireless Network Test Report printed fine.  Interesting though the Wireless Network test Report had the following date:  Jan-00-00 00:00AM.

    Hello @Dalead,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving a message stating "Unable to communicate" when printing a document using the Officejet 7500 E910. I will do my best to assist you! I would recommend following this entire HP document on Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.
Try assigning a static IP address and let me know if this resolves your issue or not. I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express

I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express.
I am using a DLink DI-524 Router, Windows 7 (64), and the AirPort Express.
AirPort Utility will not recognize the AEX wirelessly, it will only recognize it when it is connected by Ethernet. I can then configure the AEX and verify that the settings stick once disconnected and then reconnected. However, even after that, it will not recognize the AEX once disconnected from the Ethernet cable.
I followed the suggestions of several other threads on these forums. But I am unable to get the AEX to work.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
It's almost always a security setting that causes problems when the Airport Express (AX) tries to join a third party wireless network. The AX usually does not "join" correctly and that's why you can't see it on your wireless network using AirPort Utility.
Using an ethernet cable is still the more reliable way to configure and adjust the AX, but if you are want to try to configure it using wireless, you must return the AX back to factory defaults as follows:
    Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
When it is set to factory defaults, the AX broadcasts a wireless signal with a network name like "apple network xxxxxx" where the "x's" are either letters or numbers. You must look for this network by clicking on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the screen. If you don't see this network, then click Join Other Network to search that way. Unless you connect to this network, you will not be able to configure the AX using wireless.
Do you know the exact security type that your D-Link router is using? That is the key element in the process.
Open AirPort utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to establish a name for the AX, device password and adjust time zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
    Wireless Mode....Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name...must exactly match your D-Link wireless network name
Enable ethernet clients if you want the port to be active (your D-Link must be compatible with ProxySTA for this to work)
Wireless Security...exact setting of the D-Link network. WEP security causes a lot of issues. Try to use WPA/WPA2 Personal, which is far more secure.
Wireless Password...must match the D-Link network
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes
    Click Update to save settings
    Any luck?

  • Unable to create a wireless network with my airport express.  Please help!

I am trying to setup a wireless network with an airport express, and connect to it with my Macbook. I just bought both of these and haven't been able to get wireless to work.
I initially plugged the ethernet cable from my cable modem into the airport express and plugged it into the wall. The macbook detected it when I opened airport utility, but the express had a flashing amber light and I was unable to connect. I then unplugged the express and re-started the cable modem. This time, the airport express showed a solid green light -which should mean that it is working correctly. However, the macbook did not find the airport express device when i searched for it using airport utility. I am able to connect the macbook directly to the cable modem, after re-starting the modem, and access the internet so at least some of the systems are go.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.
    Tom

Is the issue that you cannot access the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) with the AirPort Utility that is running on your Win7 PC? ...  or that once you have configured the AXn, the PC is unable either to find the new wireless network or can find it but cannot connect to it?

  • I am unable to join my own wifi network with new iphone 5

I am unable to join my own wifi network with new iphone 5.  It has the latest software downloaded too.  Keeps saying unable to join network after I type in the password.  All my other devices are able to join but just not the iphone.  I've called Verizon and my internet provider and they have been unable to help.  I had no problems with my iphone 4 with this very same issue.  Please help or I'll be forced to return this phone.  I have 13 days left.

Try power-cycling your router (unplug for 15 seconds, then plug back in), then on your phone go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Reset Network Settings, and try joining your network again.  Note: resetting network settings will erase passwords for previously joined networks on your phone.

  • Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

Bruce777 solved this for me, thank you Bruce! My printer now works perfectly on my new wifi network!
Bruce's  instructions, for anyone else having the same issue:
    - delete any previously set up printers
    - scrub old hp software and update software to get the hp 2.8 drivers
    - remove the usb cable from the printer if you have one connected
    - reset the printer network to hpsetup (hold down the power button and press network button 2x and then cancel 3x, release power button.)
    - print out the wireless network test report (hold down the network button and press the update button 2x). verify the network name / ssid is hsetup
    - got to sys prefs > network and change the mac wireless network to hpsetup
    - go to the sys pref > print scan
    - add the HP 8000 printer
    - click on the options and supplies button and click on the Show Printer Webpage
    - click on the networking tab > wireless in the left pane > start network wizard and change the network from hpsetup to your network
    - finish (this page may freeze up.  close the browser)
    - go back to the sys prefs and change the wireless network back to your networt
    - go to the printer and print out the wireless network test report (press network button and update button 2x).  Check that the SSID is your network
    - go to sys prefs > print scan > select your printer > options & supplies > show printer webpage > network info (check ssid and compare to wireless network test report)
    - try printing something to your printer.  It might take a little time the first print.

  • Unable to print with my Canon PIXMA IP 4700 and JetDirect network appliance

After many tries I decided to post my question.
I have a Canon PIXMA IP 4700 connected to the network with a Jetdirect 175X box. So I tried to add a new printer with a "HP Jetdirect Socket" port. I have previously installed the driver from the official website. The test page is staying on the spooler.
I also tried with LPD port (supported by the Jetdirect box) and IPP but nothing is working.
When the printer is directly connected with USB, it's working fine. Printing from my others Windows computers is working fine too since many months.
    Thank your for your help.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your problem is being caused by the Canon driver. It cannot be used when the printer is connected to the USB port of a 3rd party print server, or if shared by Windows.
The solution is to use a driver like Gutenprint or PrintFab. Gutenprint is preferred because it is free (it ships with OS X) however the iP4700 is not listed as a supported model. The iP4600 is listed so you could try selecting this model in the Print Using menu (shown as Canon PIXMA iP4600 - Gutenprint v5.2.3). If the iP4600 Gutenprint driver does not work that well then you could look at using [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net] which does support the iP4700. It costs €49 but there is a 30 day trial so at least you can try it before committing to buying.
Another option would be to use a Airport device, like the Express, instead of the Jetdirect print server. With the printer connected to its USB port you can then use the Canon iP4700 driver on the Mac.
