Unable to open a fCE 4 project in final cut proX

Hi there.
I've been working with FCE 4 for a number of years now and just decided to upgrade to FCP. I have an FCE4 project that I would like to open in FCP X but I can't figure out how. I feel like a total beginner... I can't even find File -> Open Project.
Can anyone send me in the right direction?
Thanks!
David

This should be a no brainier for the guys engineering this new upgrade.
I'm new to the forum, new to Apple Computers, and new to Final Cut.
Fresh insights might be helpful.  Albeit, this is not intended to be by any means an exhaustive list of wrongs with the new and improved FCP X.
I've been working with Final Cut Express 4. The learning curve, for me, was steep.  Apple has a different glossary than PC. I was working in Avid Studio for over 10 years and was very adapt to the software, and it was not without it's faults.
So I had to learn the Apple Way, that took me close to a year.  After investing time and energies into the process and finally getting to a place of feeling like I understood the terminology and the platform of Final Cut, they go and change it.  After doing some google searches to get reviews on the new and improved product, I was amazed at the New York Times article written about the product and the firestorm of ridicule that the author and Apple has received for the new and improved product.
I just decided to download the Trial of Final Cut Pro X, and give it a whirl.  Right off I saw the fresh new look and liked many of the features that were available to me in Avid, but not in Express.  Yes I know that Express is the entry level, but still, it compares to Avid's Studio 14, which blows FCE4 away.  Anyway, I was pleased to see some of the features that I was desiring in FCE4 being offered in FCP X.
As I said, it seems strange that the engineers took the platform and completely remade it.  OK, that's their prerogative.  I think it's misleading in every way to state that it's Final Cut Pro.  This is a different program with a much different platform, different glossary, different lay out, different filing system, and as mentioned in the very first post, does not accept the files of Final Cut Pro 7 or earlier editions.
I totally understand the frustration of the Professionals who have invested a lot of treasury, time, and study to learn this program, to work it into their work flow, and then have the rules changed.
For me, it's not a big deal, but I would be extremely bent out of shape to think that the program I've toiled over and become expert at has now been altered to not even have the slightest resemblance to it's apparent Father.
I don't understand why their are not Sequences, Bins, logging properties, and more, just to mention a few.
I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not.  It has many great features that I find easier to follow and understand.
I'm a videographer, and shoot weddings and special events.  I also do documentaries for non profit groups and Churches.  I am a seasoned editor, and Cameraman.   I like the iMac I purchased a year ago, and have had not issues to date, save this program.
Final Cut Pro X has crashed 4 times in two days, that's the first time I've ever had a program crash with the iMac.  It happened when I was working in the titling portion of the program.
In conclusion, I'm new to this Forum, I sure that I've broken some protocal, but be kind.  I have spent 15 years or more on Avid's Forums and was a seasoned editor and user.  I saw the post and naturally had the same question, which Tom Wolsky provided the same answer for.
I know that when we had such issues as this the boards were alive with comments and responses, but in the end some of our suggestions would end up bringing changes to the product.  They either came out with a fix for a bug or they came out with a new product.
I can remember such issues as this and they took care of them eventually by adding a conversion step within the newer versions or a download to convert the old files to the new file extensions.
Maybe they have this planned for a soon release.  If not I think that Apple may have cooked their golden goose for sure.  Many seem to see this as more of a consumer platform than a Professional editing platform.
I like to follow the chatter on the matter, if there is a proper thread for such things.

How Do I Open a Motion (5) Project in Final Cut Pro X?

You can't directly. You can either export a file, or you can save it as a template, effect, title, transition, or generator, that can be used in FCP.

  • UNABLE TO OPEN FCP 6.02 PROJECT FILES AFTER INSTALLING LEOPARD!

**Unable to open FCP 6.02 project files after installing Leopard**. Tested and found that the files can be opened on another computer with OS 10.4.10, but not OS 10.5. Spoke to apple support many times, and have tried reinstalling FCP, but it didn't work.
Apple is now saying to erase my HD and reinstall from scratch. This presents a problem since i have software installed but no disc due to a move, (they are deep in offsite storage).
Anyone have this problem? Anyone know a fix?

    Lynne,
There is a section in the manual on the migration tool... I don't have my machine fired up right now so can't direct you to the exact page. I think a search for migration or migrate should do it.
    Two other things to try:
    1. There have been numerous reports that Quicktime 7.3 is what is killing older projects. According to one of the third party program makers Apple re-wrote Quicktime changing the null value to Zero from minus-one. I'm not a code junkie so can't vouch for this but the upshot would be, go back to Quicktime 7.1 or 7.2 not 7.3
    2. There is a Quicktime plugin called "Perian". For lots of people it has caused numerous problems.
Look for Perian on your machine and if you find it, drag the app to the trash... re boot and try again.
Of course the ultimate solution would be to reinstall Tiger, Final Cut Studio 2 and Quicktime 7.2. So far the most stable combined setup for me and lots of others on G5 machines.
36 degrees and thunderstorms with sleet here this afternoon. The door on my storage unit is staying closed.

  • Can I open a Final Cut Express HD 3.5 project in Final Cut Pro 5.04?

    Hello,
I've been working on a new project in Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and now want to import into my Final Cut Pro 5.04 but when I try to do so I get an error message telling me the file type is too new and non-compatible. Is there a way round this? I would have normally tried to import an XML from FCE but that does not seem to be an option.
    Any help is appreciated.

if you know someone with 5.1.4 they should be able to open it then get you an XML for 5.0.4

If you export the project from FCE you can import the QuickTime into FCP. You can do limited work to it like adding titles.

  • Importing imovie project into Final Cut Pro

Hello I need help getting my HD imovie project into final cut pro. I recored the project in 24p and it's already imported into imovie. What is the best way to get it into Final Cut Pro so that I can edit it further without sacrificing the quality.
Another problem is that I have heard that imovie compresses the video and totally ruins the quality. Is this true? And is this reversible in any way? I have already recorded over all the clips for this project on my camcorder. How screwed am I?
    -Michael

First thing to do is find your original clips that you captured in IMovie. I don't have much experience in IMovie, but see if you can select a clip and control click and choose reveal in finder. If that works, open one of these clips in quicktime player and hit command-i and let us know the format of the clip.
Kind of doubt you'll be able to actually import your project into fcp, but you should be able to recreate it in fcp without too much difficulty.
Let us know what camera you shot and captured from. That may be of some help.
Hopefully someone with more experience in IMovie will speak up, but hopefully this will get us started.

  • IHDPro/MBCC Error: Unable to figure our your host.  Assuming Final Cut Pro.

So I have just installed FCE 4 and am encountering error messages upon start up. The messages read as follows...Message 1: "IHDPro Error: Unable to figure our your host. Assuming Final Cut Pro" as well as Message 2: "MBCC Error: Unable to figure our your host. Assuming Final Cut Pro."
The first message initially appears upon FCE's loading of its video effects. I am given the option to press OK...so I press OK. FCE then loads a couple more video effects then that same first message reappears. I am again given the option to press OK...again I press OK. This happens one more time (for a total of 3 error messages of the first kind) until FCE loads a couple other video effects then displays the error message of the second kind. This error message displays twice, to which the OK option are offered by FCE and accepted by me both times. FCE finishes loading and all is ok.
This issue was last brought forth on and only on this forum in December of last. The link to that topic can seen here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6097916#6097916
I'm unable to tell whether the issue was resolved since the topic has been archived (preventing replies) and due to the fact the the individual (Richert Goyette) who encountered this same problem has not listed an email to which I'm able to ask him of his resolution.
Thank you for your time and effort in aiding in this matter.

I don't know whether this will help but the first thing to try when FCE does anything wrong is to trash the preferences exactly as described here:-
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
If that doesn't work you could completely uninstall FCE 4 as described here and reinstall it:-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
You can ignore the LiveType and Soundtrack items.
You might also want to trash FCP 6's preferences as well.

  • Transfer clips and projects from final cut pro x trial to final cut pro x

Just bought the final version of Final Cut Pro X and cannot transfer my existing clips and projects from Final Cut Pro X Trial.

RRight-click on your library, select Open With and choose FCP.

  • I need to transfr a project from final cut pro 6

I need to transfr a project from final cut pro 6 to an editor with final cut pro 5.
will they have the problem of not being able to open the file? any suggestions out there?

    Welcome to the forum!
FCP project files are NOT backward compatible with older versions. But you can export an XML file of your FCP 6 project, then use the XML file to build a new project in FCP 5. Check the manual for details.

  • I have been working on a project on final cut pro trial, just purchased the real deal, but cannot find a way of importing the project

I have been working on a project on final cut pro trial, just purchased the real deal, but cannot find a way of importing the project

    You don't import the project.
I'm going to assume that both the trial version and purchased version were 10.1.
Open FCPX and then Open Library>Other, Navigate to wherever you stored the library (ies) you worked on when you used the trial. Choose that library and your work should be in one or more events in it.

  • Importing FCE4 projects into Final Cut Studio

I have the opportunity to purchase Final Cut studio with motion 2 Live Type media 2 DVD Studio pro 4. Since I have projects created in FCE 4 would I be able to bring those projects into Final Cut Studio with out a problem?

Well I am finding more and more info It is Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1 not the "older" version I though it was. Am I to assume the FCE Projects are not transferrable to Version 5.1?

  • Mavericks' iMovie won't export project to Final Cut Pro

Upon updating to Mavericks and its accompanying versions of iLife, I do not see where the option in iMovie to open a project in Final Cut Pro X is.
Likewise, attempting to import an iMovie project from Final Cut only creates a blank project with the iMovie project name and then crashes Final Cut Pro.
Is there any way to regain this feature?

If you are on iMovie 10.0.2, use FILE/SEND MOVIE TO FINAL CUT PRO. If you are not on 10.0.2, let us know what you are on.
This sends the iMovie to FCPX 10.1. If you are not on FCPX 10.1, it will not work.
I recently tried this with one of my iMovie 10 projects and it all worked perfectly. Nothing changed in Final Cut Pro X (unlike when using the previous method with iMovie '11). All clips, titles, transitions, audio tracks, edit points and so forth were intact. I was then able to add further embellishments in FCP X. It's a delight using FCP X, given its flexibility and greatly expanded feature set compared to iMovie 10.

  • Delete project in final cut

Is there an easy way to delete a whole video project from final cut express 4?  Thanx in advance in case i can't find the way to you who offer help. tedillon

delete a whole video project from final cut express 4
If you mean an entire project and all its associated media files & render files, no.  FCE does not have any kind of media manager capability.
To manually delete a project you need to delete the following:
FCE project file - normally located in Final Cut Express Documents
Source media clips - normally located in Final Cut Express Documents > Capture Scratch.  But don't delete your original clips if you think you will ever want to re-use them.  Back them up somewhere if necessary.
    Everything in the following folders:
Final Cut Express Documents > Render Files.
Final Cut Express Documents > Audio Render Files.
Final Cut Express Documents > Thumbnail Cache Files
Final Cut Express Documents > Waveform Cache Files
Final Cut Express Documents > Autosave Vault
This process may be more complex if you have more than one project going at the same time.  If that's the case, each of the above named folders will have a folder inside it with the name of each project.  Only delete the files/folders associated with the project you want to delete.
