Unable to open a iphoto library after moving to another hard drive.

Due to space issues on my Mac Book Pro, I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive. Once the transfer was complete I created a new library and then tried to relaunch the old library off the Ext HD. It now tells me the library is locked or on a locked device or I don't have permission. Neither of the those are in effect. The Ext HD is fine, when I go to Get Info on the iPhoto library it says I have custom access. and the locked box is not checked.
Any thoughts!?!
Thanks!
Kyle

What format is the external drive?  It must be Mac OS extended (journaled) to house the iPhoto library.
I'm not sure what the creation of a new library was about ro where you created it or why
what do you see if you depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command? Can you access your library on the EHD that way?

  • Afraid to let go of my iPhoto Library after backing up to hard drive

    iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   </span
I have a LaCie hard drive that I am trying to put my iPhoto Library on. I have managed to copy the library to the drive but I am afraid to delete the original library from iPhoto.
Before deleting it I went to iPhoto and deleted one picture. I then turned on my LaCie drive, brought up the lPhoto library and looked for that picture. It was gone. I am afraid if I now delete my whole library it will also delete the one on my LaCie drive.
How to I transfer the library to the hard drive and then be able to delete the photo library in iPhoto and start all over again?
    Thanks,
    Jane

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Caution is correct, your pics are important to you.
What procedure did you follow to move the library. Here's the best way to do it:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder (that's in Home/Pictures) to the External HD.
(Now you will have the pics in both locations.)
    3. hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto. It will give you a dialogue box where you can choose a library.
    4. Use the dialogue box to navigate to the new location on the External HD
iPhoto will now use the library on the External HD. To confirm this: Select a photo in the iPhoto Window and right- (or Control-) Click on it, and from resulting menu choose 'Show File'. A finder window will pop up with the file selected. In Column View it's easy to trace the location of th file and confirm it's on the External HD.
Still not happy? Move the iPhoto Library Folder in Home/Pictures to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and if it cannot find a library it will ask you to locate or create one. If it does find a library and open normally, then it's the one on the External HD.
However, don't be in a rush to trash the one on the internal. Make sure that you're happy that all is working well, and then, when you're sure, trash it.

  • If I upgarde my iPhoto on my computer..can I open my iPhoto library stored on an external hard drive?

I have all my photos saved on an external hard drive..if I upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto..will I be able to access my library?

    Greetings,
The current version of iPhoto can read libraries on external drives (just double-click the Library).
It is always advisable to have a backup of your data before you make changes to it (like upgrading) so make a backup of that library just in case.
Finally, make sure the drive is Mac Formated.
    Hope that helps.

  • Cannot open old iPhoto library after updating from Tiger to Lion

I changed my Mac and now I am using Lion on MacBook Pro.
I am trying to open the iPhoto library that I used to have on my old PowerBook G4 with Tiger, but it does not work.
When I open the library, iPhoto says that the library needs to be updated and asking OK to continue. I press OK to continue and iPhoto starts to work though after hours (I tried to leave the mac to work for three days) nothing happens!
The library is very big, 39 GB!
    Any help?

    NowApple:
    Sounds like a damaged database.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't drag and drop my iPhoto library on to an external hard drive (Seagate Go Flex).

I am trying to move my iPhoto library to an external hard drive (Seagate Go Flex wireless) but it won't let me drag and drop. When I drag the iphoto icon over the 'drop files here' it just disappears. No error message. I am running mountain lion. What can I do?

    Susie,
    (Seagate Go Flex wireless)
What is your iPhoto version? And your Mac OS X version?
With iPhoto '11 your iPhoto library needs to be on a drive formatted Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). Is your external drive formatted this way? If your drive is formatted differently, iPhoto will not be able to open the iPhoto library there.
When I drag the iphoto icon
And are you really trying to drag your photo library (from your "Pictures" folder) or your iPhoto application from the "Applications" folder? On MAcoS X 10.7 or later you will not be able to drag the application from the Applications folder.

How can I get my music from my Itunes library (purchased and downloaded (CD)) after I replaced my hard drive?  Same account name.  My other computer see's old and new music.  Can purchace new songs.  They show up by themselves.  Can connect IPOD and old songs show up.  Seem's like they are defined as different accounts.

They will only be where you put them.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Make a backup copy of your Aperture library, before you proceed.
Then try to repair the library using the "Library First Aid Tools":
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
Locate the Aperture library on your My Passport drive, then hold down the Command and Option keys while double-clicking the Aperture library.
Select Repair Database from the First Aid panel.

  • Lost photos from iphoto library after moving it

    Comments:
I have a G5 OS X Version 10.5.5.. I had a lot of photos in my iPhoto library and I was told I could move iPhoto application to my external HD by holding down the command key and then drag iPhoto over to the external HD. Which I did. I opened the external HD and all the photos where there in the iPhoto Library. I had to shut down my computer as I was away for a few days and when I turned it back on and went into the external HD the iPhoto application was not there nor the photos. My Time Machine has no record of them as iPhoto only seems to have a record of a new iPhoto Library on my desk. Can I retrieve these photos? Can you run iPhoto from your external HD? Thanks for your help. Regards Amanda

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I was told I could move iPhoto application to my external HD by holding down the command key and then drag iPhoto over to the external HD.
The problem with moving while dragging is that you defeat the default behaviour of the OS. If you simply drag then your Mac makes a copy of the library on the new volume and you have the opportunity to test it thoroughly before trashing the library on your start up disk.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Next, moving your Library - which normally lives in your Pictures Folder - and moving the iPhoto application are not the same thing. You should not move the application.
Start by doing an All Images Search:
    In the Finder
    -f
    Kind Images
    Size: Greater than 300k
    see if that finds anything.

  • Unable to open previous iPhoto library on new Mac

    Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help... Having copied my old iPhoto Library (from OS 10.6), I've tried various methods to open in new iPhoto (running OS 9) with all photos still organised into events.
    1. Replacing iPhoto Library: User > Pictures > iPhoto Library, doesn't recognise photos at all
    2. Reading iPhoto Library from file on external HD
    3. Holding down alt key, on opening iPhoto Library and pointing to old Library, doesn't recognise image files. But then…
I actioned ‘Rebuild Library’ and had some success, I can see jumbled images, without Events data - though many images were duplicated after being enhanced (rotated).
Is there a fool proof way other than how I’ve tried, to export all photos form old iPhoto Library, with events data remaining intact and not duplicating lots of images? Is iPhoto Library Manager the best software for Mac that will sort through and find /delete ‘similar' images?
Appreciate all tried and tested suggestions, as this is about 5 years+ worth of images…
    Thanks

Having copied my old iPhoto Library (from OS 10.6),
What version of iPhoto last used that library before you copied it over?  Are you currently running iPhoto 9.5 1?  If your previous iPhoto verson was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier read Note 2 below.
This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.
If the above does not apply try the following on a new copy of your original library:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
4 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Check the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos". Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • How can I open my iPhoto library after I installed a new HD?

My hard disk crashed. I got a new one installed. Now, when I sync my iPhone or open iPhoto I get:
"You can't open your photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
Can this only be fixed by reinstalling Maverick? When I first installed it, my computer slowed down to 80% its usual speed and I saw no benefit.
Can I install the new version of iPhoto without having to install Maverick? If so, where can I find it to download it?

  • Cannot open my iphoto library after iphoto upgrade

    - i have a newest iphoto 11, latest update
    - all my libraries are backuped with a timemachine
    - my iphoto library has 118GB (unfortunatelly)
    - new iphoto cannot open my library
    - i tried restore library from a time machine to a new location, iphoto cannot open it (used option key to change the active library)
    - i tried option+command when starting iphoto - all options, all checkboxes
    - i tried iphoto library manager - i was able to rebuild the database and open it with iphoto, but i am missing all hidden photos from the original library (i have it checked in iphoto library manager preferences)
    - i tried change permission via terminal, doesn't work
    - i read many discussions, googled, find no answers to hidden photos, or new solutions
    - i had an idea to somehow split my iphoto library in finder/show package contents, etc... tried to move directories from (data, modified and originals by year), but it does not work)
    - i am out of options
What else I can try? Iphoto library manager was close, but without hidden photos

no, no, just trying to find some solution
i don't understand that it's corupted, how come?
i was able to use it with previous iphoto in 2010. As I was using many libraries, for different situations, all my other libraries were transfered well (they dont become corupted) - it was like 8 months ago. This month I found my oldest library, where my 2000-2009 photos were stored is not working. I would like to go back 8 months when I was using old iphoto.
anyhow, thank you for reading and for trying to help.

  • I am unable to open my iPhoto library with iPhoto

tried rebuilding permissions, data base repair, and data base rebuild to no avail

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library.  Can you?   If you can't  try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you can create a new library then you need to rebuild your library with iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto  8.1.2 and later  or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
