Unable to open a word document in SharePoint 2013

Dear all,
We are using SharePoint Foundation 2013 with Office Word 2010. Uploading an updating a document in SharePoint generally works fine.
We have a word document uploaded to SP on which we work a lot. I uploaded it yesterday and continued to work on the document. This morning when I wanted to open the document I get the message from Word: "Could not open 'http://xxxxxxxxx/sites/documents/General/document.docx'
(where xxxx is the name of the server).
This is the second time that we have this issue.
Except this message there is nothing on SharePoint log site.
Best, Jeppen

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately these post do not help.
Strange thing is that we can work again with the document.
I forgot to mention that the "Download a Copy" always worked.

You may first want to look into Safari's "Installed Plugins" section within the browser. This is (usually) found under the Safari Help header in the top of a browser. I say usually, because I don't use Safari often and mine is an older version. They handle applications and plugins like most others, to a point.
I see in Safari Installed Plugins that mine would use
    application/pdf
    Acrobat Portable Document Format
Acrobat Reader & reader plugin v9.5.5 for web browsers
(in Safari 5.x, where I looked into this)
While I use FireFox, SeaMonkey (Mozilla) and others, where I can choose in preferences the helper applications to open from the browser, Safari has different methods; so if you can change this in the preferences or settings of Safari in a later version I am not certain.
You could see what the defaults are by using Safari help menu to open the Installed plugins, and maybe find out what happend to Adobe reader plugin. Could be it was 'sandboxed' in a later OS X and needs to be installed differently to be accepted as safe.
It is easier to set how a file type is handled once it is inside the computer and not held in the browser; by file type in general or specific to each single document. I do both, and seldom let an a browser do these things due to security considerations. I download and open them, only then if I feel they are safe.
Sorry to not have a specific answer for that anomaly.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Unable to open a Word document?

    Hey,
Was wondering if someone can provide me guidance as to why I cannot open a Word document sent to me (the file is received and downloaded by email).
The error message that I get whenever trying to open the document is as follow:
Tried opening the document using other software but without success. Also tried the suggested in the error message (i.e. repaired the file, open with text recovery... no success)
I previously used PCs to open the same document. I notice that PCs from Asia are able in opening the file, while PCs in North America weren't... Very confused about the file type.
    Appreciate all your help!
    Peter

    Hi Csound1,
I do agree that it has to do with the file itself. As far as I can see, the file itself is a .doc (Word document).
I attached a document info screen shot here:
    Thanks again.

  • Can't open Microsoft Word document through SharePoint

Since upgrading to Firefox 35, I am no longer able to open Microsoft Word files through SharePoint. When I select "Edit in Microsoft Word," I get the error message "No connectivity with the server. [FILENAME] can't be opened because the server couldn't be contacted."
Note that this is specific to my Mac. I can open Word files on SharePoint when I use my VMWare Windows simulator.
    Any suggestions for a fix?

see if any of these can help.

  • Credential Pop up while opening word document in SharePoint 2013

    Hi
When I open office documents from SharePoint library, it is asking for credentials. Even if I put my credentials, pop up window will not go away. I have IE 11 and SharePoint 2013.
I have put this site in trusted site zone. User Authentication  - Automatic logon with current user name and password.
I have clicked on Remember my credentials. I can see my saved credentials in credential manager.
The thing is, I was able to open word document without asking for password before. But recently, I have changed IE settings to be default level for some other reason, and since then it is asking me for credentials.
I looked online so many articles, but nothing has helped me yet.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Cameron
Thanks for your response. Yesterday night, when I tried to open documents from sharepoint site from my home, it didn't ask me for credentials. I was using same laptop which I used in the office.
Again, today in the office, It started asking for credentials when I open office document.
The only difference is internet connection is different between my home and the office.
Not sure what could be the issue.

  • Unable to Open the Word Document

    Hi Experts,
I have a scenario to generate word document with the information comming from R/3 into bookmarks located in the document. This we are doing with WordML. We have uploaded WordML templates to server and at the run time we are getting the content from those templates replacing book marks with corresponding data comming from R/3.
Once we replace all those book marks and we are writing into another ".doc" file and opening the same ".doc" file in another window.
This functionality (opening document in another window) is working fine in my system (runnig with MicroSoft Word2003). Where as in another systems (runnig with MicroSoft Word2007) is not working, in that system it's opening new window and immediatly it's closing with out waiting to chose either "Open", "Save" or "Cancle" option from user.
Following is the code used for this purpose:
    IWDCachedWebResource cachedWebResource=WDWebResource.getWebResource(inp,WDWebResourceType.DOC);
    cachedWebResource.setResourceName("XXXXXXXXXX.doc");
    wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createNonModalExternalWindow(cachedWebResource.getURL(),"XXXXXXX.doc").open();
NOTE: inp is the inputstream which contains the content that has to open in the final ocument.
Please help me out in where exactly it's causing the problem.
    Thanks,
    Udaya Dumpa.

    Hi Udaya Dumpa,
I am currently working on a project of my own where I would need to open different versions of Word documents using different version of office.
I am using the method cl_gui_frontend_services=>EXECUTE and just passing the location and file name to the parameter document.
I have tested this and so far have no problems.

  • Unable to open files from web on Sharepoint 2013

I have a user who is having an issue opening any files on sharepoint site. I have checked technet for possible solutions and this is what has been done so far:
Environment: VDI using Xendesktop with Windows 7 Enterprise, Office 2013.
    1. Ran repair on Office 2013 professional plus (32-bit)
    2. Uninstalled and re-installed office.
    3. Cleared the cache from Skydrive/ Office document upload center.
    4. Tried to reproduce issue on another thin client with a different user logging in and accessing the same file...no issue.
User can download the file and upload the file with no issue just cannot open it online in webapps using IE9.
The OS is a 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise and he has used IE9 32 bit and 64 bit with same issue.
Permissions were verified to the file as well.

what error user getting? did you try to different user on the same machine or same user on different machine?
did you see any error in ULS logs?

  • Reporting Service issue: Unable to open reports (.rdl files) from SharePoint 2013

    Hi All,
I am facing issue while accessing reports from SharePoint sites and below is the error message.
Report Server has encountered a SharePoint error. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.SharePointException: Report Server has encountered a SharePoint error. ---> Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: Virus Found:  ---> System.Exception:
For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors (Fault Detail is equal to Microsoft.ReportingServices.ServiceContract.RsExceptionInfo).
Error message shows "Virus Found", so we have disabled the antivirus scanning (Symantec Protection for real time scanning) and it started working.
We have tried to add ".rdl" and ".rsds" files in the exception, but didn't work. Noticed that issue is happening when we enabled the option "Scan the item when download".
Please suggest how we can rectify the issue without disabling any Symantec settings.
    Thanks,
    Anoop

    Hi Anoop,
Not sure this option "Scan the item when download" of Symantec will do what action, you may want to get more info from symantec, it seems you have posted in symantec official forum
here, I would recommend to keep an eye on updates there.

  • Word Viewer will not open documents from Sharepoint 2013 in IE11

I've run into an issue while trying to open documents from SharePoint 2013 after upgrading to IE11. My organization uses Word Viewer with the compatibility pack and all other Word documents (local files, intranet hosted) will open with no problems. When
trying to open a Word document from SharePoint the Word Viewer will open, but the file does not. We have verified that all Windows Updates are installed. We have tried opening SharePoint in Compatibility View and Enterprise Mode. We have re-downloaded the
latest version of Word Viewer and reinstalled it along with the compatibility pack. If we open the SharePoint site in Explorer view and then open a Word document it will open in Word Viewer with no problem. Excel and PowerPoint documents open from SharePoint
with no problem. This is only affecting Word documents with Word Viewer. When using the full version of Word the documents open fine. Within SharePoint we have tried activating the site collection feature "Open Document In Client Applications by Default"
but it made no difference. We're completely at a loss how to make this work as there doesn't seem to be much information specifically pertaining to issues with Word Viewer.

    Hi Victoria.
    1. The PCs do not have Microsoft Office installed, nor are we using the Office Web Apps. "Word Viewer" means the Microsoft Word Viewer application available here (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4) that is available
free for read-only viewing of Word documents.
    2. There are no errors when I open Word docs in Word Viewer. The Word Viewer application launches after clicking a Word document link in Sharepoint, but there is no file open in it. When that happens the IE11 Sharepoint window on the taskbar is flashing
yellow, but when I click back to it there are no messages or alerts to click on.
    3. This issue does occur with all Word documents (.doc, .docx) in SharePoint. However, it does not occur when opening Word documents in the Word Viewer when they are local files or through IE11 from a non-SharePoint website like our local intranet.
Those files will open with no problem in Word Viewer.
    4. I will try to get a screenshot, but we are working on creating images for deployment and I don't currently have a machine configured the same way. I'll work on reconfiguring one and post a screenshot.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Word 2013 slow to open documents from SharePoint 2013

    Hi all,
Word 2013 running on a Windows 8.1 client is take 2 or more minutes to open a document from SharePoint 2013. Excel takes less then 10 seconds from the same site in SharePoint.
I have remove all proxy configuration from IE, clear the Auto Detect Settings. Added the URL's to the intranet zone and disabled all IE addons. I have also performed a reset on IE, reinstall of Office and tried a number of workstations. All have the same
issue. The document just take forever to open.
Checking with Fiddler, I can see 3 requests hit the SharePoint server then nothing... after a few minutes the document opens.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Craig

    Hi Craig,
For troubleshooting your issue, please take steps as below:
1.Open IE, go to "Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings" and uncheck "Auto Detect Proxy".
2.From the File tab in Word application, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for
    Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
3.Edit the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.
Also please have a look at the article:

  • Saving/Opening documents to SharePoint 2013 from within Office 2010 applications

I was hoping that Office 2010 would work nicely together in terms of saving to and opening documents from SharePoint 2013. Alas, I was disappointed and somewhat surprised to see that opening/saving documents in SharePoint from within Office still
involves copying, pasting and hacking the URL of the document library in the Save or Open dialogue box. I was fully expecting that Office 2010 would have display some sort of SharePoint navigation so you could view your sites and document libraries in a similar
way to folders. A mature document management system this ain't!
Anyone have any advice on how to improve the Open/Save to/from SharePoint experience in Office 2010? I'm open to the idea of Office add-ins whether third party or official Microsoft.
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply, but that's from within SharePoint, not Office?
An example scenario: I create a new document or receive a document, I'm in the document, and I want to publish the document to a document library in SharePoint. At the moment I would have to save the document, load up SharePoint, navigate to the document
library and then go through the upload process.
I should really be able to, from within Word, select File - Save to SharePoint (say) and then be able to navigate to the document library I want to publish to. Really basic DMS stuff that I'm surprised isn't there!
Similar thing to opening a document. I should be able to Open from SharePoint, navigate to the document library via some sort of navigation box, and open it.
    Thoughts appreciated.

I am having difficulty opening a word document that my instructor has attached to my Oncourse (student page) online. I have Adobe reader and Microsoft Office. Every time I try to open a word document a message box pops up from Adobe Reader stating that it cannot open it because it is either an unsupported file or it was damaged??????????

Originally I was unable to open a document without getting a pop up screen from Adobe stating that Adobe was unable to open the doc because it was either an unsupported file or because it was damaged.
I tried opening it up as the link you sent me directed me to, however I was unable to even follow step one because it did not gice me ANY of the options.
My friend was trying to "fix" it last night and now it is doing something completely different. Now, when I try to open a document it opens a message box that reads, C:\Users\Owner\Downloads\Ch1pos(3).pptx is not a valid Win32 application???????
I have  4 classes and 3 of my instructors had sent attachments to my Oncourse and or Canvas page and I have been unable to open their attachments since I have gotten my computer back from having a new harddrive put in. My boyfriend declined their offer to add Office because his mother has the disc. • Links in Word Documents to SharePoint documents

Our SharePoint site contains Word documents with links to other documents stored in SharePoint.
When the users open a Word document stored in SharePoint, and then create a link, the users select the files in the "Current Folder" which is the SharePoint Network Drive.  In this case the path is
    \\rcssportal.co.riverside.ca.us\DavWWWRoot\sites\teammate\
When users then open the Word document, and select a link, they receive a "Cannot open the specified file" pop up.
If users do one of the following though, after being authenticated all the links will start working:
    1. In the document library, select "Open with Explorer"
    2. Map a Network Drive to
    \\rcssportal.co.riverside.ca.us\DavWWWRoot\sites\teammate\

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to link in Word Documents to SharePoint documents.
I try to reproduce the issue, however, I can open the Linked Word Document in the SharePoint Network Drive.
Please make sure you create Network Drive correctly. For more information, you can refer to:
Using SharePoint Document Library as a Network Drive
If the issues still exist, I recommend to select "Open with Explorer" to open the document.
