Unable to open any Windows 8 application

I just recently started experiencing issues when attempting to access Windows 8 apps.  There a two different scenarios that are going on and one root cause to the issue that I have found through the troubleshooting steps that have been provided
in various other threads about applications that cannot be opened.
The obvious error that is being seen is "This app does not support the contract specified or is not installed." when accessing settings options such as "Lock Screen Settings".  The second issue is when accessing the "PC
Settings" application, it minimizes to the desktop and cannot be upsized.
From the troubleshooting efforts I have taken through various other issues that are similar but not quite this problem, I have identified it is because the profile I am using is lacking a proper Microsoft Account and I need to enter in my credentials to resolve
these problems.  The issue with doing that is that when going into the "Your Account Settings" app or the "PC Settings" app I am faced with one or the other of the issues that were mentioned above.
Is there any alternate way to add the my Microsoft credentials to my account to resolve this issue?

  • Cannot open any google based application

Within the last few days or so, we are unable to open any google based application, ie., images, YouTube, maps. We get an error message that says "404 Not Found" nginx. It is getting very frustrating.

I tried flushing the cache, but to be quite honest I don't know if I did it correctly. This is what terminal looked like when I entered the command:
    users-macbook:~ User$ dscacheutil -flushcache
    users-macbook:~ User$
It didn't give any sort of confirmation that it had flushed the dns cache. I don't know very much about unix, though, so maybe that is what is supposed to happen? Anyway, I also created a test user account, and that account had the same problem with Google sites.

Hello this week I'm unable to open any pdf's with preview, when I select to open a window opens up with message "file couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it" none of the pdf's have any security thanks if you can assist

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Unable to open any applications in administrator account

My OS is 10.6.2. Just tonight, I was unable to open any applications in my administrator account (Safari, iCal, iTunes, calculator, system preferences, etc.). In other words, I can't do anything while logged into my administrator account. However, everything works fine if I log into the guest account. Any suggestions? I have restarted my computer and that did not help.

What happens when you try to launch applications? Do you see error messages?
Check the behavior in Safe Mode by restarting the computer with the Shift key held down. Booting will take a while longer--this is normal, so just be patient.

  • Unable to open any downloaded applications

When I download a new application - today I downloaded iTunes and Quicktime - I get a dmg image, I double click on the image and I get mpkg. Double clicking on that file causes the installer app to start to open but then it immediately closes. The result is that I'm unable to open any app downloads. I've tried both Safari and Firefox and get the same result. I set up a new account and gave it Admin permissions; same result. Thoughts?

10.4.11 seems like a bit of a disaster! At least I can boot up, but the computer seems to have difficulty with one of the internal hard drives, and will no longer sleep. Any attempt at getting it to sleep causes the second drive to disappear on rebooting; fortunately after some 10 mins it finally reappears. Not sure whether to wait for 10.4.12, or try to go back to 10.4.10, which was running fine.

Hi.  My new computer had Acrobat on it.  Suddenly, I was unable to open any PDF's.  and then I tried to update and was forwarded to the Adobe site that said I had to buy a monthly subscription.  I do not have the physical box with a serial number and was going to buy the one advertised on the website until I discovered it's only for students and teachers, which I am not.  What should I do next as I need to use PDFs on a daily basis.  Thanks!  I would like to be able to download this and pay online.  Possible? I currently have Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.  I have a Windows 7 system.  Please help!

As long as you know your serial number you can download PSE from here:

Unable to open any books from iBooks app after downloading new 7

    Hi, Cargei.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would first start with closing all applications in multitasking and power cycling the device.  Test opening a downloaded book in iBooks

If the issue persists, try downloading a free iBook and test to see if it opens.

  • Unable to Open any Models in the VC storyboard

    Hi,
I am unable to open any models in the Visual Composer Storyboards. The moment I login to VC, I get the standard IE error and the window closes.
Has any one come accross this issue before?

    Hi Ashwini,
I think this is not an VC error. I used Google and found:

I think there is problem with your IE Installation. Can you check this issue with another machine?

  • Unable To Open Any Files In Photoshop CC

    Hi All,
I am unable to open any file formats in my trial version of Photoshop CC. This problem seems to occur daily and the only way to resolve it is by restarting my laptop?
File formats I am trying to open include a new PSD file, old PSD files and also jpg files, png files and pdf files.
I am using an HP ProBook laptop but not sure of the model number.
Any help to prevent this from happening would be greatly appreciated and if anyone needs anymore information don't hesitate to ask me?
    Thanks

    Allyson,
    Another welcome here.
Along with the answers to Trevor's questions, how are you attempting to Open those Image files, i.e. Dbl-clicking on them in Windows Explorer, or from the File>Open menu in the Toolbar? If you are using the former, please try the latter. If you want to work from Windows Explorer, Rt-click on the file, and choose Open With, then Photoshop.
Your comment about WMP being the default viewing program, seems to indicate that your File Associations have been changed, with WMP now set as the target program. If this is the case, then you will likely want to go to Folder Options (check for your specific version of Windows), and reset the File Associations for, say PSD, PSB, JPEG, etc., to point to Ps.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

After updating silverlight, i'm unable to open any pdf files in the system

According to your User Agent you posted this question using Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1. Are you having a problem with Firefox? What Firefox version?
You said you are having a problem opening PDF files on your system. Can you explain that better? Mozilla Support can help you with opening PDF files in Firefox, which uses a built-in PDF reader. Maybe one of these articles will help?

  • [gnome] cannot open any window

    Hello,
Since this morning I cannot open any window. Not exactly because if I double-click on a folder on my desktop, nautilus shows up but if I double-click on a text-file, nothing happens.
If I do ALT+F2, a launcher appears but if I try do start any application (gedit, firefox, terminal or even nautilus), I see a notification in the bottom of the screen ("starting gedit...") but it disappear after a few seconds.
If I try from the application menu, same. Same with the administration tools.
In the conky (automatic startup), I see that dropbox (also automatic startup) is running but I don't have the icon in the top right corner.
Only one or two percent of the CPU is used and a few megabits for the RAM
Yesterday I added two line in my ~/.xinitrc to start mpd but as it didn't work (couldn't start gnome) I removed them this morning and now I have that (but it could have been caused by something else I did yesterday)
Fortunately I have ubuntu on another partition but I want my archlinux back
    Thank you
edit : it seems that it was an error from my /etc/hosts file

First, the process by which OS X checks the validity of root SSL certificates doesn't currently work behind the authenticating SOCKS proxies used on some enterprise networks. If applicable, contact your network administrator. The proxy server may need to have its settings changed.
Disable the built-in application firewall, if it's in use. If you're running a third-party firewall such as “LittleSnitch” or “Hands Off,” disable that. Test.
In some versions of OS X, Parental Controls has a bug that prevents loading of secure websites. Turn it off.
Are the current date (including the year) and time shown on your system clock? If not, correct them and test.
Otherwise, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter "ocspd" (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Is a process with that name listed?
If not, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the Finder menu bar. Into the text box that opens, copy the following line of text:
    /var/db/crls
From the folder that opens, move these two files to the Trash:
    crlcache.db
    ocspcache.db
You’ll be prompted for your administrator password when you do this. Then reboot, empty the Trash, and try again.
