Unable to open AVI files in Photoshop CS6

Unable to open AVI files in Photoshop CS6
I am running PS6 and want to open and edit AVI files. When I try to do that I get an error message saying "the video file cannot be opened" . This seems to apply to ALL avis - yet I can open and edit MP4, MMV etc. I installed Gspot to track whether it was a codec issue and when I try to open ANY file I get this error message : "Warning: DirectShow crashed while GSpot was attempting to obtain information about a codec.  This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers.  It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow.  GSpot was able to intercept the crash, and has attempted to identify the codec or filter involved; uninstalling or reinstalling this codec or filter may solve the problem.  The codec was tentatively identified as:  C:\Windows\system32\imaadp32.acm Unknown video codec #11" I have NO idea where to go from here. I see a site to download the "imaadp32.acm"  codec but what about the "Unknown video codec #11". What the heck is that and what do I do about it. Any help would be appreciate, Cliff
ps I should add that the avi files DO open and play in Bridge. I have the latest Quicktime. Everything is up to date and PS and the computer is otherwise working perfectly !

Thanks Curt and 'Mylenium'
I did re-set the prefs - but to no avail
I checked and my graphics driver and audio is all up to date.
No sure how to verify Windows Media Player's hardware acceleration options. I opened WMP Options /Perfformance tab and under Cd the DirX tab is checked.
Running Windows Vista - so does the same caution apply regarding a re-install of Windows Media Components and DirectX ?
Appreciate your help with this somewhat frustrating issue. I am converting some old 8mm film to avi with the hope of doing some edits then burning to DVD.

  • Unable to open RAW files with Photoshop CS6 - Camera Raw

    Hi all,
I'm trying to open .CR2 files from a Canon 450D on Photoshop CS6 as well as with Lightroom 4 but it doesn't work.
I've updated the Adobe Camera Raw to its latest edition (8.8), but anyway, when I try to open them it appears the message below: It basically says that photoshop is not able to open the file, make sure that you have installed the latest edition of Camera Raw and to visit the link for further info...
After looking for solutions on Internet, I've also tried to convert the RAW files into DNG, but Adobe DNG converter says that the folder does not contain any RAW file, though they are all .CR2 files...
I've tried several times in many ways... Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Benjamin,
You were right. It was the camera's provided software transfer system. I've copied them directly from the (same) card to the desktop and works.
    Many many thanks! Cheers

  • I can't open .avi files in Photoshop CS5

I used to be able to open .avi files in Photoshop just fine, but I’ve just tried opening one again after a couple of months and I can’t. It’s just black blankness. I have no problem with .mp4 files, but unfortunately, most of the videos I'm trying to make gifs out of are in .avi format.
Is it because I've updated QuickTime? Or is it that Adobe CS no longer supports .avi files? It says here that Photoshop CS6 supports the .avi format.
    My specs:
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.4
    Photoshop CS5.1
    QuickTime Player 10.3

  • Problems opening video files in Photoshop CS6

I appear to be unable to open any kind of video file in Photoshop CS6, I always get the error message "could not complete your request because it is  not the right type of document".
I have noticed, however, that a couple of things seem to be different from all the video tutorials that are out there, e.g:
      1.  The Timeline dosen't seem to give me the option to open a file from it and appears to be a timeline for animation only (see image below)
      2.  The Mini Bridge dosen't show the movie files, e.g. on my desktop I have three different movie files (AVI, MP4 & MOV) and as you can see none appear (see image below)

    Thanks for your reply Pete.
When I have a picture open the Timeline dosen't seem to have the "convert to video timeline" button you mentioned (see image below)
Also HERE is the link to my system info you requested.

  • Unable To Open Any Files In Photoshop CC

    Hi All,
I am unable to open any file formats in my trial version of Photoshop CC. This problem seems to occur daily and the only way to resolve it is by restarting my laptop?
File formats I am trying to open include a new PSD file, old PSD files and also jpg files, png files and pdf files.
I am using an HP ProBook laptop but not sure of the model number.
Any help to prevent this from happening would be greatly appreciated and if anyone needs anymore information don't hesitate to ask me?
    Thanks

    Allyson,
    Another welcome here.
Along with the answers to Trevor's questions, how are you attempting to Open those Image files, i.e. Dbl-clicking on them in Windows Explorer, or from the File>Open menu in the Toolbar? If you are using the former, please try the latter. If you want to work from Windows Explorer, Rt-click on the file, and choose Open With, then Photoshop.
Your comment about WMP being the default viewing program, seems to indicate that your File Associations have been changed, with WMP now set as the target program. If this is the case, then you will likely want to go to Folder Options (check for your specific version of Windows), and reset the File Associations for, say PSD, PSB, JPEG, etc., to point to Ps.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Can't open Raw files in Photoshop CS6 using Nikon D7100?

I have a Nikon D7100 and recently did a photoshoot where I shot in Raw. Upon uploading my images and then attempting to open them in Photoshop it came up with a pop up saying that photoshop is unable to open that camera raw file. I have downloaded the adobe recommended converters but those don't seem to work either. Help?

The Nikon D7100 didn't get support until Camera Raw version 7.4; CS6 shipped with 7.0 (and is compatible up until 8.3). Did you go through Help > Updates?
Also, versions of Camera Raw above version 8.3 won't work on anything below Windows 7 or Mac 10.7. You'll have to "upgrade" to at most 8.3 to continue using it on the other operating systems.

  • Why is it necessary to re-enable each time I wish to open a file in Photoshop CS6?

When I use the "open file" command, I find all of my files blanked out and I have to "enable" the window to show "All Documents" each time. Is there a way to change this so that "All documents" are always visible when I choose Open File (or Command-O) in Photoshop CS6? I am using a Mac Pro and the latest version of PS CS6.

    From the above link:
Many odd issues can be resolved by resetting your Photoshop preferences.
The main preferences file is called "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp".
Once you find the file, save a copy to include in your bug report, then delete or remove it from the preferences folder.
Photoshop will create a new preference file the next time it is run.
    Windows
Under Windows XP the preference file will be found at:
    %windir%\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\PhotoshopCS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp
Under Vista and Windows 7 or 8, the preference file will be found at:
    Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp
    Macintosh
On MacOS the preference file will be found at:
    /Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings/Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp
PLEASE NOTE: On MacOS 10.7 and later, Apple has hidden your Library folder, so you may need to make it visible - but the location is the same for all MacOS X versions. Instructions for accessing hidden user library files: Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion
If you need a quick and dirty way to restore your preferences, here's a way you can do it using a keyboard shortcut on launch:
Windows - CTRL-SHIFT-ALT immediately after you double-click the PS icon.
Macintosh - CMD-SHIFT-OPTION immediately after you double-click the PS icon.

  • Unable to open NEF files in Photoshop Elements

I have recently purchased a Nikon 6100 and am unable to open the RAW files, saved in NEF format to Photoshop Elements 11 despite running all Adobe Updates.  Can anyone advise how I can do this please. Thanks

    Hi Nh239,
Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups and for use in Nikon software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.2
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.2
You can convert a whole folder of NEF images in one click.
    Thanks

  • Preview in openning a file in photoshop cs6

Unlike in the lower version on Photohop, openning a document will have a preview of the file..
How to do the same in photoshop cs6?

    Hi Elmer,
Wondering if this is what you're referring to. When I open Photoshop CS6 and choose File > Open... I get to see the following dialog box. Inside the red rectangle are different options for finding and previewing files. You can change these to find one you prefer.
    Here are the other options:

  • I used to be able open video files in Photoshop CS6. When I try to open it now it says "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

I don't know what I did. I started messing around with After Effects and accidentally opened up Adobe Media Encoder Queue. After that, that's when I noticed the problem. I can still import the video frames into layers but I can't open it up directly. I tried opening .avi, .mkv, and .wmv files. Also just noticed I'm missing the "change timeline view into video view" button.  Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

You either borked your hardware acceleration stuff by changing graphics settings/ installing a different driver or you messed up your CoDecs (and the associated hardware acceleration options) by installing a Codec pack or alternate media player... Impossible to be more specific, since you haven't bothered to provide even the most basic system info.

  • Unable to open ANY file in Photoshop CS2

I was working on pretty big files. Lots of layers. I decided to restart the Computer in order to speed up the process. Once the computer booted up again i double clicked on one of the images and I got the lovely beach ball for quite some time...after well...about 2 minutes or so...NO sign of ANYTHING happenning i decided to close the program using the Command + Tab and then Quitting from there instead of force quit. USUALLY when I do that it takes a while to regroup and close, this time it does it instantly. NO files are opening it just stays there... "thinking" and when I quit it quites instantly. Has anyone else experienced this in the past? How could I solve this problem I am going NUTS! lol
Thank you for your time. Hope I can get some help soon.

    Hello there,

  • Unable to open DNG files in Photoshop CS3

i have tried pulling these onto the alias and opening from within photoshop, but always get the error message "photoshop does not recognize this type of file"
i looked into the DNG converter, but obviously that only converts things to DNG files.
    any help is appreciated.
    JB

    Thanks for the comment -
    I am on a Mac.
By alias I mean that I drag a file to the dashboard to launch it.
When I go to "file/open" from within Photoshop I can not see any DNG reference, nor will it allow me to open a DNG file. They all appear greyed out.
    Attaching screen grabs.
