Unable to open excel file in document list

I have an excel workbook that reads from several SharePoint lists. I have a group of users (5 to be exact) that are unable to open the excel file when its in the document list, however, when I email them the workbook they can open it and update the pivot
tables on it (that read from several lists). They were able to open the file in the past and this issue started around 6/20 when office updates were pushed out.
When they open it they get the following error message:
Excel Web Access please contact your admin.
The document list has 20 excel workbooks in it and they can open the other 19 without any issues and 5 of them including the one they can't open connect to the same lists for data.  I even created a test doc library and added the file into it and they
got the same error message.
What could be causing this?
note: we not using excel web services, just uploading workbooks where some connect to lists for data

Hello,
Are you opening file in browser? if so please try to open in client by changing the library settings-->advanced settings-->then set client.
Another thing, what permission are given to both users. Try to provide some higher permission and see the result.

  • Unable to open excel file in office 2010 client.

    Greetings All,
User is unable to opne excel file from a document libraryof sharepoint online. In advance settings of the document library I set files to be opened by Office client application. Because there was an issue to open the files in browser. So I decided to open
the files in client application. I changed the settings in advacend settings in the document library so that user can open the files in client applicationtill users are facing issue. Below is the screen shot.
user is having office 2010 and IE11 installed in his computer. Could you please help me how to get rid of this empty login screen?
    Kind Regards,
    Supriyo Manna

    Pagi Supriyo,
Tools>Internet Options>Security tab, click "reset all zones to default"
    Trusted Sites Icon>Sites button...
Does the user have your sharepoint site listed there? Do you use Group Policy to map it to the Trusted Sites list? Do you have
http://microsoft.com listed(server versions of windows do)?
MS Online services (or any https site) will work just as well if they are mapped to the internet zone.. try removing them from the Trusted Sites list.. There are IE security zone settings preventing navigation into a zone of lower integrity....
If you require the site to be in your Trusted Sites list, then you need to add the following entries...
    *.Microsoft.com
    *.live.com
    *.outlook.com
    *.Microsoftonline.com
(the * notation includes all subdomains)...so that all the services from msonline are in the same security zone.
You may get better answers from a sharepoint support forum.
    Regards.

  • Unable to open Excel files on Windows Network

I can no longer access Excel files on a windows network drive. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting, restarting my computer and it still doesn't work. I am able to drag the files to my desktop to open it, but It will not let me save back to the network and replace the exsisting file. Says that it can not be accessed and may be read only.
It worked for me the first week I had the computer, but then stopped. All other file types open just fine.
    Please help.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Excel files can be protected by the author. That is, an 'internal to the file' flag can be set to read only.
Additionally, for files on the network, if a file was improperly closed, then the server believes the file is still in use, therefor, marks it as read only.
It's easier to do the next thing from a windows box... make sure the windows box is set to show hidden files.
Navigate to the directory in which the file is located, and check it for hidden temp files. It will likely be named
    "~actual name of file.xls."
This is an indicator someone either has the file open, or had it open, didn't close it properly, thus it is considered open.
Deleting the hidden "~nameoffile.xls" may clear the problem.

  • Unable to open excel file through application created by application builder

    Hello,
I've created an application for my program using application builder, but the built application  is not able to open the required excel file as it was being opened in original program.
    Please help.

Please post your code. We cannot do anything to help you if you do not. There are too many things that could be wrong for us to try and guess what you are doing. Also please tell us which version of LV you are using and which version of the toolkit. This is important because there have been a lot of changes to the toolkits here in the last couple of years.

  • Unable to open html file in document library without saving first

I've uploaded a bunch of HTML files from a DVD to a document library on our Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise server. When I try to open one of the html files it wants to save the file instead of opening it. If I choose to open the document library in Explorer

What's causing this? I know there is an option to set the file handing to permissive, but I'd rather not do that.

Maybe if you try export first....?
Vista has its own ownership permission flags. Maybe if you modify the file or a copy first, and then copy.

  • Cannot open excel files in iOS4

As soon as I upgraded to iOS4, I have been unable to open excel files. Sometimes I get a can't open error, sometimes it crashes and goes back to the homescreen and with some excel files it works. A Genius at the store was able to open one after he re-saved the file on his mac but suggested this inconsistency was a bug that Apple would fix. I get a lot of excel files from many difference people for business and this is a real obstacle. Does anyone know how to fix or if Apple will. Thanks.

Many are experiencing this issue. We are an software development and Managed IT services shop and all of our clients are experiencing this same issue when trying to open an Excel file created by SSRS.

  • Possible cause of "Cannot open Excel file error"?

    Hi!
Here's my problem: one of our LabView applications creates .xls Excel
files.  However some of these files are too big to be opened into
Excel, so we need to open these files in DIAdem to analyse the data (in
fact, even the smaller ones often need to be analysed in DIAdem).
The problem is that DIAdem seems totally unable to open Excel files,
small or big, created by our LabView application or not.  The
error message appearing when we try to import Excel files is "Cannot
open Excel file"... which doesn't give any clue about the cause of the
error.   My question is: what may cause this error to
occur?  I searched both the help and the website without finding
    useful information.
The computer is running on WinXP with OfficeXP installed, and we are
using DIAdem 9.0.  If additionnal information is required, just
    let me know.
    Thanks in advance!
    Maxime B.

    Hi!
I did some experiments this morning.  First of all, the file I had
created using Excel that I tried to open yesterday just opened.  I
don't know why it didn't work yesterday, but, for now, it's
working.  Now, for my LabView-created files, I still get the same
error message.  However, if I open the files in Excel and try to
save, a warning message appears, saying that the file may not be
compatible with the text (separator:tabulation) format.  If I
ignore the warning and save the file as a .xls file, I can now import
it into DIAdem.  The problem is probably that my LabView-created
files are not "real" .xls files.  Now, this is a problem, because
I can't open some of the bigger files in Excel without having the data
truncated (Excel has a maximum of 65536 rows); last year, using DIAdem
8.X (I don't remember the exact version we had), I could open those
files without any trouble... Is there any way to get those files to be
opened with DIAdem 9.0?  I attached one of those files if it may help.
    Thanks!
    Maxime B.

  • Problem with Pages.  I have recently been unable to open Pages, or any documents from Pages on my iMac.  Pages seems to be in the Cloud and can open a list of the documents in Pages, but can't open any of those documents.

Recently unable to open Pages or any documents therein.  It seems to be stuck in the Cloud.  Although I can open a list of the documents I can not open any of the documents.

The answer is simple...  If you want to remedy this, then don't save them as PDFs.
Word opens Word and text documents.  Not PDFs.
Also note that this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Microsoft Office or your question in any way. • How to list all currently open Excel files with ActiveX?

    Hello all!
I would like to program with ActiveX a way to retrieve a list (array of strings) of the filenames of the currently opened Excel files in windows. However, I am fairly new to the ActiveX/Excel business in LV and after hours looking at the "millions" of objects in the property nodes I give up and hope some kind soul here can help me. I couldn't find any information in this forum regarding the same issue, although some were close
I am using LV 7.1 without the Report Generation Toolkit.
    Thanks!
    /Goran

    Hi KC,
thanks for your reply. I have in fact been able to find the desired things in the ActiveX properties/methods for Excel in LabView. It took me some looong work going through the functions which I suspected to be the ones. Anyway, I post a little jpeg here of the code if someone ever needs the same functionality. What it does is that it checks how many Excel workbooks are open and controls if each of them matches the searched Excel filename, if one does, it is closed.
    Enjoy
    /Goran

  • Problem opening excel files exported from Discoverer Plus 10.1.2.48.18

I can't open excel files (xls) exported from Discoverer Plus 10.1.2.48.18 when I enable macros. The application (Excel) hangs up.
Someone have any idea about this?
    Thanks,
    Diego

    Hi Meifang
I did some more research and found a document on MetaLink 250820.1 that talks about Discoverer not being able to call Excel if Discoverer is running via an IP address instead of a qualified domain name.
The article talks about making Discoverer a trusted site in the Internet Options of IE. Here's the relevant info from the posting:
Workaround for MS IE (if necessary):
    1. Open a new MS IE browser
    2. Navigate to: Tools | Internet Options Security where you will see the Trusted Sites icon (green icon with a check mark)
    3. Click the Sites button
    4. Add the following: http://IP:port/
(where IP, port are the location of where Discoverer server is running)
    5. Click the OK button
    6. Click the OK button again
On my own PC, I was having a similar problem and I was unable to get Excel to launch. In the end I did this:
    1. Open a new MS IE browser
    2. Navigate to: Tools | Internet Options | Security where you will see the Local Intranet icon (computer icon against a globe)
    3. Click the Local Intranet button
    4. Click the Sites button
    5. Click the Advanced button
    6. Add the following: http://IP/ or http://website
(where IP or website are the location of where Discoverer server is running)
    7. Click the Add button
    8. Click the OK button
    9. Click the OK button again
    10. Click the OK button a third time
With this done, I made sure that my Explorer settings were correct by doing the following to ensure that a couple of settings for the .xls & .html file types are unchecked:
    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Navigate to: Tools | Folder Options | File Types tab
    3. Highlight the Extension XLS (or HTML)
    4. Click the Advanced button
    5. At the botton of the screen are three settings that use checkboxes. If either of the following two are checked, un-check them:
Confirm Open after Download and Browse in same window
    6. Click the OK button
    7. Click the Apply button
    8. Re-boot the PC
After I did this I was successfully able to get Excel to open from within Discoverer.
    Best wishes
    Michael
