Unable to open folders by hovering...

I'm setting up me new Macbook (love it so far!), but there are a few things different from my MacbookPro, and I'm not sure if there's a setting for this particular issue or what....
When I want to move something, say a jpeg for example, from the desktop to a subfolder somewhere in my Hard Disk, I can't seem to get the Hard Disk to open simply by holding the jpeg over it. This issue is system-wide, and I can't believe how much less productive it makes things. Any ideas of how to fix it?
Thanks in advance guys!

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on General, and check the box for spring-loaded folders and windows.

  • Spotlight - unable to open folders

This one is pretty new to me. After migrating to Lion, I'm not able to open Folders from Spotlight anymore. Files work fine, but clicking on one of the Folders from search result just brings this little animation - but no folder window. Anyone else seen this?

For what ever reason this works now again. Think it was related to the full Time Machine Backup, that prevented finder windows to open.

  • Unable To Open Folders Displayed in Sidebar

Hello. Recent Mac convert here (Jan 2010).
My wife recently created some folders in the Sidebar under "Places" for a few pictures, fonts, and graphic design files that she regularly accesses. Today, the folders she created are still displayed there, but a couple of them cannot be opened. When you click on them, nothing happens (folder is not highlighted); doing a right-click on those particular folder will only give the option to "Open Sidebar Preferences." Additionally, we are unable to locate any of the files on the hard drive that were moved to those folders. I wouldn't think that any of these folders were trashed because they are still appearing in the sidebar.
Any help in trying to figure out what the issue is would be greatly appreciated.

Finder can not locate the original folders with original attributes, try remove them from Sidebar by dragging out of there and place it again.
Unfortunately it rather sounds as if the OP has managed delete the original folders, hence the failure of the aliases in the Sidebar.

  • Unable to open folders in dock

In an attempt to clean up my desktop, I dragged some personal folders down to the dock next to the applications folder. When I double-click on them, they won't open and a question mark appears over them. I can't use any of the menu options like "show in finder" or "open". Nothing happens!
I also can't find them using spotlight (folders or files). I don't have copies of what is in the folders.
What did I do wrong (besides not copying the folders!)????
And more importantly, how can I access these folders????

    Hi Dollie,
I am wondering whether you want to upload multiple documents into SharePoint library once.
If yes, you can try to use Drag and drop feature in SharePoint 2013 to upload multiple documents into SharePoint library.
More information about Drag and drop feature, you can refer to:

In System Prefereneces, when I am in Desktop and Screen Saver, I am unable to remove folders. I've seen one other report like yours, and I think the issue is caused by a bug, but I don't know what triggers it.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I accidentally locked my desktop folders , unable to open them Ho two unlock the folders

I accidentally locked my desktop folders , unable to open them Ho two unlock the folders

You have done something which change the permissions and your user is not able to access anymore. You can play around and try to correct permissions manually by going to your home folder, right click on the Desktop folder and choose get info and when new window will be open, at the bottom of it, check if your username is listed and if has Read & Write permissions.
Other option is to boot to recovery mode (after starting up your computer press and hold CMD+R), then from top panel click on Utilities and choose Terminal. Once terminal is open, type in it resetpassword and when new window will be open, select Macintosh HD as your system drive, select your password and click on the RESET button which is next to "Reset home folder permissions and ACL". NOTE: do not reset your password, you don't have to.
Second options would be better in case if permissions on other folders been changed too.

  • Unable To Double Click Open Folders On Desktop!

I am running a G4 450 mhz with 1GB Ram OS 10.4.11. Recently I have not been able to double click open folders or launch applications from the desktop. The cursor also seems very jerky. I can open with a Command O or using Open from the Menu bar. I have zapped the pRam, Reset Open Firmware, Repaired Prefs with no luck. I would prefer not to do an archive and install if I do not have to, as I understand that sometimes files and apps get messed up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, if i have to do an archive and install I have another problem. i am unable to boot from my 10.4 CD as the CD/DVD drive kicks it out. I have tried the disk on other computers with no problem. Other OS boot from this drive so I do not think it is the drive or the disk. I could boot off of a external hd disk set as my startup disk but Apple tells me that it I do this and try to mount the 10.4 disk on the desktop and do a archive and install from there it will not work, only if I boot off of the disk holding down the C key at startup. I am lost. Can anyone help!!!

Hi Hoshwa, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Do you have another Mouse to try?
I have tried the disk on other computers with no problem.
If you do need to A&I, you can use another Mac with Firewire as an expensive DVD drive...
If you have another Mac with Firewire & a FW cable, put the Install Disc in the other Mac, boot the Other Mac into Target mode...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Boot the G4 with the Option key held down, see if the Install Disc in the other Mac shows up as a boot choice.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Unable to open any folders after PRAM reset

I have been having problems with cursor jumping to bottom of page in Firefox. I read that I should try opening in Safe mode but issue persisted.I then reset my PRAM and now I am unable to open any foldersexcept my HD and that only sporadically. I checked permissions (highlight HD>Get Info) and saw that there were 3 listings for sharing & permissions:
system, admin and everyone...all but 'everyone' had read & write. I clicked '+' to add my name but it will only give me Read Only permissions. What to do?

You may have a shot at it in starting in single user mode.
At the prompt copy & paste these commands...
    *mount -uw /*
    Press return
    *chown root /*
    Press return
    *chmod 1775 /*
    Press return
Then, at the prompt enter *fsck -fy*
This will run a file system check, like Repair Disk and repair any problems if it can. If you run into errors run fsck multiple times until it reports OK.
To exit single user mode type reboot.
EDIT: Also, agree with Mark... that is not a good sound...

  • Unable to open project file

    Hello!
I'm in desperate need of a miracle here. I've already read over other solutions to this problem, but perhaps someone can come up with something I haven't. I'm using Final Cut Pro 7.0.3, and I finished a project last month that took a lot of editing work. After the project finished, I cleaned up my folders as usual, copying over all the media and the FCP project file over to my network external hard drive. I then made the horrific mistake of deleting my autosave files. Little did I know I'd want to access the project later, and instead of opening and having to reconnect my media, it just comes up with the error of "unable to open project file".
I've tried copying the project file I saved in November back to my local computer and opening it. I tried dismounting the network external hard drive and opening my local project file. I tried adding a .fcp to the end of the file's name. And I downloaded Pro Maintenance Tools in a hope that it could fix the corrupted file, it said it was fixed, but I still can't seem to open it. All my other FCP files are opening just fine.
I'm also interested if anyone knows whether my deleting everything FCP created except for the project file might be why it crashed?
Thank you in advance to anyone who even reads this hoping they can help.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. Perhaps someone else with greater tech skills will chime in on this and be able to suggest a solution. Deleting or changing the location of the files you mentioned earlier in the thread can certainly complicate and add time to  a new  edit but should not have caused the problem you've encountered in getting the project file to open.
    Good luck.

  • "Unable to open project file" message in final cut express 3.5.1

I have (well had now) a project with 3 video clips and multiple .psd files as stills. When the project contains just the 3 video clips and a couple of transitions I can save the project and quit Final Cut Express and relaunch FCE and when I try to re-open the same project, it opens just fine, without any problems and just the way I expected it to be. After editing the same project for a couple of hours and saving along the way (this has happened twice now and I don't think the length of time of editing matters) and adding multiple still images to the 3 video clips (this part is new in my working with FCE); I save and quit. When I return to open the same project I get the message "Unable to open project file" and click the OK button, which is my only option and I am given a new blank project. So where did my work go???

Thank you for the response, but it hasn't worked yet...
I read the link. I am working off my internal drive.
I re-named the Capture Scratch folder, and any Render folders and then launched FCE. I was presented with a window that reads "To preserve the integrity of the data used by Final Cut Express HD, it is necessary to ensure the existance of the following path(s)" The path in the box below is where my project file and support files are. My 3 options are Quit, Check again and Reset Scratch disk. I choose the Reset Scratch Disk button and it took me to the Scratch Disk window and I Set/Created a new folder and clicked Choose and then OK back at the Scratch Disk window and Continue at the initial window... the Reset Scratch disk button is now labeled Continue. I am given a new Untitled Project work space. I tried to open my project file and once again with the message "Unable to open project file".
    Where did I go wrong???

  • Unable to open Applications folder

I am unable to open my Applications folder and my Pictures folder. When I click on either one of them, this box pops up: "There is no default application specified to open the document Applications (or Pictures, if that is the folder I'm clicking on)." In other words, it appears that the system thinks the Applications and Pictures folders are documents. I can access the contents of these two folders by clicking on "Show Package Contents." I have checked many other folders, and they all open normally. I've also run repair permissions in Disk Utility, but that has not helped. I would appreciate any suggestions to correct this issue.

something caused them to be treated as packages instead of folders
When this has happened in the past what happened is the bundle bit got set on some folder it shouldn't have been. As to WHY that happened, I don't think anyone ever figured it out. If one has installed Xcode I know you can easily check on the bundle bit and reset it. Sometimes Apple has the necessary tools installed without Xcode: you need GetFileInfo and SetFile, which might be in /usr/bin if Apple is installing them by default in Snow Leopard (I used to put them online as a public service, that may not be necessary now).
To check to see if the bundle bit is set you use GetFileInfo in Terminal:
    GetFileInfo ~/Pictures
Pressing return after typing the above will return the following:
    directory: "/Users/francine/Pictures"
    attributes: avbstClinmedz
    created: 12/12/2008 11:05:55
    modified: 03/31/2010 01:23:28
In this case the bundle bit is NOT set (lower case "b") although the custom icon is. If the attributes shows
    avBstclinmedz
as it sounds to me like it would, then the bundle bit is set and can be changed using the SetFile command:
    SetFile -a b ~/Pictures
The situation is a bit trickier if the root level, main Application folder also has the bundle bit set, since that folder belongs to the system. One would have to run the command using sudo.
