Unable to open iphoto after ver 11 upgrade
Unable to open iphoto after ver 11 upgrade.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Can't open iPhoto after an upgrade
Hi,
I did the iPhoto update yesterday and realized today that I am unable to open iPhoto now.
An iPhoto window appears and says "What photo library do you want to use?" as shown on the picture. But there are no option...
What do I have to do? Have I lost all my pictures saved on iPhoto?
I would like it to be like before, meaning that when I open iPhoto, the application opens automatically with my albums and all.
Thanks for everyone's help! This will not help, but I don't think I did a back up. It does not automatically do it?
If it can help we have a Time Machine. Are my files stored there automatically? Can I find my iPhoto from there?
What can I do to recover iPhoto with my pictures? Why did this happen after doing the Update?
Thanks for your kind help Terence! -
Unable to open iPhoto after upgrade to 9.1.3 (bought on apple store)
Hello all
I am unable to open my iPhoto after upgrading it with version 9.1.3 , bought in the apple store.
The searching icon never stops.
I trieded to synchro with my iPad (where I have a backup of all my pfoto's) but the system tells me that all photo's are still on my Mac.
Can someone help me out, because I am rather a rookie in this kind of things
regards
WaldoTry this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. If you can then then your library is the culprit.
If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library (Finder ➙ File ➙ Duplicate) and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I can't open iPhoto after yosemite upgrade - tried to reinstall, not working! Help!
Hi
Im new here so please bare with me if I've not included everything needed but I'm really struggling an after trying everything else on every other link I've found Im stuck!
I installed Yosemite a few weeks back. I have tried everything I have read on forums etc... to try to get iPhoto to work but nothing is helping. What am I missing out?
I upgraded iphoto in the ap store. I have tried uninstalling iPhoto as per advice from a other thread and when I re download it it still just has a grey screen with the circle going round an doesn't do anything. All I can do is force quit it.
I have my photos backed up. Im not concerned about getting them or them being wiped from my machine. My theory was to uninstall it and reinstall it fresh as new and just start again. My photo library was huge (talking well over 100,000 photos) so thought it might take a while but left it overnight an still nothing. iMovie and other programs working fine after the update. I just now have nowhere to do quick edits and view my pictures.
iMac (27-inch, Late 2009),2.66 GHz Intel Core i5,4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
How can I just start again an have a nice fresh iPhoto for me to upload my photos from my backup drive?Hi, Léonie,
My iphoto is having the almost the same problem except that these are old iphoto files from 2010-2013... And I backed them up in external drive.
So, after upgrading and letting it repairing, iphoto asked me to quit the application. I'm sure it could be open with older version of iphoto...
Below is what I see step by step. Please help, I've got quite a few years memories there...
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! -
Unable to open iPhoto after installing Mavericks and latested iPhoto Version.
I have just installed Mavericks onto my Macbook Pro. The next thing I did was purchase, download and install the most recent version of iPhoto. The previous version of iPhoto was '09 Vers. 8.1.2.
I have about 300gb’s of images in my iPhoto library, which are on an external HD. When I try to launch iPhoto, I get a message saying the iPhoto library must be upgraded. So, I click on ‘upgrade’,and either a white screen with a large icon of a folder appears, but nothing else happens. One other time, before I clicked on upgrade, a gray screen with a scrolling gear appeared, but once again… nothing happens. I still can not access any of the images in my iPhoto library.
How do I get the new iPhoto version to play nice with my images?Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
Can't open iPhoto after Yosemite upgrade MacBook Pro
THe wheel just spins and eventually I have to force quit. I tried resetting the Pram. It's a 2011 15". Need to get into my photos! I know I can access them in Pictures but I'd like to use iPhoto.
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Are you able to create a new library or still get the SWOD (spinning wheel of death)? If you still get the SWOD try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox. -
Cannot open iPhoto after upgrading to Yosemite
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I am unable to open iPhoto. When I click on it a message appears saying 'this version of iPhoto is incompatible with Yosemite', and directs me to the App store to upgrade. I then get message saying that 'the product you are looking for is not available in the UK app store'. I live in Singapore but prefer to use the UK App store. Is it as simple as needing to change to a different country, if so which one? Or is there maybe a simpler way round this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try Terence's instructions here Is Iphoto gone ? i want it back!

Cannot open iPhoto after downloading Yosemite. I have upgraded to iPhoto 6.9 and have downloaded iPhoto upgrader 1.1 to no avail.
Did you go to your Applications/Utilities folder and actually double click on the updater to run it?

MacBook pro, 8GB, OSX Yosemite
I cannot open iPhoto after latest apple upgrade. Getting message latest iPhoto version is not available in the US.Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always. -
Hi, I just updated my mac from version10.6 to 10.9.3 os mavericks. i went to open iPhoto and it says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade." does this mean I have lost all photos i had in there? It does not give me a choice, it just says quit or upgrade? p.s. i didn't realise ther was a way to back up my computer beforehand, which i am guessing this is time machine?
1. No, you haven't.
2. Back up the iPhoto library(this can be done through Time Machine or by dragging it to a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended) and then click Upgrade.
3. Aside from Time Machine and drag-copying items from your home folder, programs such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, and SuperDuper can make backups.

Why doesn't my iphoto open now after the upgrade?... big bummer
Because something is wrong? Really, with the amount of information you supply what else are you hoping for?

I recently upgraded my mac desktop to oxs 10.9.2 and when I opened i photo, it says the photo livrary needs to be upgraded to work with this version of I photo. Where are my pictures? The message is "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of Iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete". I'm scared to upgrade!! Does this mean my photos can't be read once I upgrade? Where are my pictures?
First have you backed up your computer, if you have and your iPhoto library is in the back up you have nothing to be concerned about. If you are not using at least Time Machine to back up your system then you should be concerned because well frankly that is simply bad computing practice and you risking all of your data.
As for the message you received all that means is your system was using an earlier version of iPhoto with the version of OS X you previously had installed and now that you have updated to 10.9.2 (Mavericks) your version of iPhoto has also upgraded and needs to get ready to import all of your pictures. If you have backup then you should be confident the upgrade will go through smoothly, Apple generally has very good instructions and will not give bad advice, second guessing them may be cautious but is generally unnecessary.
