Unable to open iPhoto-- created with unreleased version?

Hi,
The other day I had to do a hard reset on my laptop after it froze while trying to come out of sleep mode (black screen, frozen mouse pointer).
After I restarted & launched iPhoto (5.0.4) I get this message: "This photo library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto. Please quit and upgrade this library by opening it in iPhoto 2 or iPhoto 4." Quit is my only option.
I tried installing iPhoto 4 but it wouldn't let me.
Simultaneously, my iTunes 8 library became damaged and I had to re-import all of my music... I've lost all of my playlists, iPhone Apps & all but one TV Show, but Movies & Podcasts are still there.
I booted my laptop from the system disk & repaired my harddrive, then repaired permissions as well. Problem persists.
Someone on a forum had suggested using iPhoto Library Manager, but when I launched it I get the message: "The album data file for this library is malformed. Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header if XML."
On a side note, I noticed that the AlbumData.xml file had changed to a Final Cut Pro icon. (I've since changed it to Open With iPhoto)
It seems like my photos are still on my harddrive... is there a way to open iPhoto without referencing my old library, then re-import my photos? Also, worried that this little crash will mess up syncing with my iPhone...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Jordan,
Your iPhoto database was damaged in the crash. Since iPhoto Library Manager can't fix it, you need to create a new library and start from scratch. This [Apple article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2042?viewlocale=en_US] has instructions for performing a manual rebuild. You might also read [these instructions by lori_diloreto|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1853164] which pertain specifically to an iPhoto 5 library. The results will differ, but her post gives a clear explanation of what to expect if you use that method.
On the other hand, if you have a recent backup copy of the iPhoto Library folder from before the crash, you can replace your damaged iPhoto Library folder with the backup to get back to that previous state. Rename and move the broken one first so you don't overwrite it or delete it until you are ready.
Regards.

  • Adobe reader XI cannot open PDF created with distiller version 9.4.2

    Hello everybody
I need your help with the following problem:
I created a pdf document once with Adobe disitller Version 10.1.0 and once with Version 9.4.2. With Adobe reader Version XI I can only open the pdf document which was created with distiller Version 10.1.0 but with Adobe reader 9 I can open both documents without any problems.Do you have any idea why?
Thank you very much and best regards,
    Iskierka

    Hi Steve,
Sorry, I cannot post a URL to the file because it is for intenal use only.
I noticed that the pdf file can be opened outside of IE browser if I disable the Adobe Reader add-on (active-X) in IE browser. If I enable the Reader add-on, the Reader cannot complete the file download. The progress bar goes in a half way, and stays there.
Just FYI, the pdf file was created by Distiller 7. Do you think it is the issue of Reader add-on? Thanks.

I think that the PPC installer can be worked around (?):
Make disk images of the Install Disks, mount them all, then use Pacifist to run the Install process
Looks like it should work here..

  • IPhoto will not open - says: Library created with unreleased version

I can't even open the app. due to a message that reads "The photo library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto. Please quit and update this photo library by opening it in iPhoto 2 or iPhoto 4." I haven't done anything to the library recently. I did install Photoshop Elements and upgrade to OS 10.5 within the last few days. I got the same message in iPhoto before the upgrade to OS 10.5 however. Can anyone help me get my iPhoto open?

    Olla:
Give Terence's suggestion a try. You'll end up with a new library and your old one for further attempts at fixing.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto message: library created with unreleased version of iphoto

Hi I'm brand new to the forum--know others have had a similar issue--
I get the message that says library was created with an unreleased version of iphoto, and I should quit and open with version 2 or 4. when this message appears the only choice is to quit--iphoto menu bar is not available.
I'm also new to Mac. I bought my powerbook August 2005, but I can't even open iphoto to tell exactly which version I have. I imagine its 5.something.
I have about 3500 photos on here, but can only see them through preview, not my iphoto library. Wondering if this is related to the fact that my 512 usb memory stick seems to have been making my entire computer freeze (there are photos stored on it). Is it possible I picked up a virus from a PC via my memory stick and it's messing with iphoto? please help. I am completely dependent on this machine--I use it for 8-10 hours every day.
    thanks,
    RF

    Hi RF,
Just highlight the iPhoto.app in your applications folder and in the next column it should tell you the version (viewing in column view)
I don't know the reason you go this message, though you are not the first one.
So far I have not seen any solution for that error message in these discussions. If you have a recent backup of your iPhoto Library folder then take the old library out of the Pictures folder and put your backup library in there (I suggest you backup the backup before you do this) Launch iPhoto and hopefully everything will be back to normal. If you don't have a backup then...
The only thing I can tell you to do right now is to create a new library and import/add to the library to reimport your images.
    these are the steps:
    Close iPhoto
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto
In the next window that opens choose to create a new library.
When the new empty library opens go to File/add to library
In the next window navigate to the library on your desktop and choose it.
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
You will have to redo your albums, keywords, etc.
    Good luck!
    Lori

  • Message: This library was created with unreleased version of iPhoto. HELP.

The message goes on to say, open in iPhoto 2 or 4 before trying to upgrade to 6. I have numerous Libraries on external RAID. All opened fine under 5.
I certainly never had unreleased version of any Apple program, nor do I know where to get copy of iPhoto 2 or 4. ANY IDEAS? THANKS.
G5/PB17/15/12   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Too many toys/too little time

    HI DesperateMacWives,
Does this happen when you try to open all the libraries or is it just one library giving you that message?
There have been a number of posters here with the same message. so far I have no solution other than creating a new library from the old one.
How many images do you have in your library?
Do you mind losing albums, keywords, comments?
    If not...
    close iPhoto
-drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
-launch iPhoto and create a new library
-double click the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.

  • I downloaded the latest version of Pages 5.0 and have been using it for days.  Now, when I try to open documents created with this version, I'm advised that I need latest version of Pages to open.  What's going on?

First time user.  Need help.  I downloaded latest version of Pages 5.0 and have been using it.  Now, when I try to open documents created by it, I'm advised that I have to downoad Pages 5.0.  What's going on?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
If you are unhappy about this review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.

  • Unable to open pdf created with Acrobat Pro using Adobe Reader X

Files created with some Adobe Professional applications such as Acrobat Pro ensure the file is small by excluding font information from the file.  Simple pdf creation applications embed the font in the file, which makes for transportability between apps but does make the files big.
The problem i have experienced is that Adobe Reader X is one of the simple app varieties, so is unable to open, print, or read files created using Adobe Acrobat Pro..
i'd welcome any help in (a) finding a free app that opens these 'pro pdf' files, OR (b) an option setting in Acrobat Pro which includes the font information in the file - or both!

There are so many things wrong, around a tiny grain of truth, it really isn't worth examining. Not at this stage if you are more interested in getting things working.  It may be worth asking you though, since Reader doesn't even launch for you, how you came to focus on font embedding being the cause.
Ok, Reader doesn't launch. Suppose you start Reader FIRST. Then use File > Open on your PDF.

Hello! I do hope this is the correct place for this question.
I spent most of last night taking some InDesign documents, saving them as PDFs, uploading them to my website and letting my customers know they are on the website for the taking.
I have heard from several people today that they are unable to open the files. Only those with Macs have been able to. I have read online and in my Mac books and have been unable to determine what the problem could be.
Any ideas would be most welcome!

    Hi Lesley!
Since I don't know how you're creating your HTML code (coding by hand or using an application) I can't offer any advice for how to correct your problem, however I can help you with troubleshooting.
Most web browsers have a "status bar" feature that will show you what's contained in a link. I used Firefox and the status bar is enable by choosing View menu --> Status Bar. In Safari you'll choose View menu --> Show Status Bar. With this enabled, hover your mouse over a link an you'll be able to see the link at the bottom of the browser window.
The link I saw in the Status Bar had two HTTP strings running together. I was able to view the PDF by removing the first HTTP string.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Help:  unable to open files created with ZipOutputStream

I am seeing some weird behavior with ZipOutputStream, using JDK 1.3.1_01 on Win2K. The code that follows is a snippet from a servlet that delivers a ZIP archive of a set an entire directory tree. I was preparing to roll it into production, but one of my testers noticed a bug that I didn't see.
It seems that her version of WinZip (6.x) was unable to properly extract the files from the archive while mine (8.0) had no problems. I then tried a couple of other programs, and I've been able to reproduce the behavior with the built-in viewer in Lotus Notes 5 (the only other utility I had handy).
I've made sure to call closeEntry() on each ZipEntry, and to call finish() before close() on the ZipOutputStream itself. Has anyone seen this behavior besides me?
    Thanks and regards,
    Casey

Insane...I have all my updates including Lion 10.7.3 why does APPLE KEEP SENDING BETAS AS A REAL PRODUCT?

    Thanks Terence,
I did get it working finally...and your last advice was what I needed.
I am embarassed that I was an early adopter...SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER and read the problems before creating some for myself.
This was an excercise in frustration, because of the obtuse division between the appstore and Apple Support downloads... it was a bit of a circuitous route...strange that with all the security reciepts and tracking that Apple goes to to prevent piracy... which Steve by his own admission used to build Apple...
Why aren't the server scripts smart enough to say…”HEY DUMMY you can't use this download because you purchased the last iPhoto upgrade from the appstore...and… DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME and precious data BUDGET downloading this gargantuan file which will eat 20% of your expensive 5Gb monthly data allotment!!!…and NOT WORK…only pretend to…and then foul your system….kill your productivity and turn your hair whiter…even worse than LION did.
I am just so antagonized by the inept scripts in recent installations that don't do a diagnostic before allowing installation that is going to corrupt things...I had less effort and frustration when I ran my ATARI with a MAC emulator...rarely lost any productivity to nonsense.
I AM TIRED OF BETAs dressed as products...designed and rushed out for Apple toys that once were tools of the creative trade...COREL...may still have a chance at a comeback if Apple keeps pumping out toys instead of the venerable tools we once adored as income enhancers.

Is this library one that you've been using since you bought the MBP?  If so and you're running iPhoto 9 then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT5037 I keep getting this message despite already upgrading on my new Mac.To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.

    I just purchased a new Mac OS x 10.9.1.
I'm trying to move over files from Passport which was my backup for my old Mac.   Not all my photos transported over.  I'm missing about 3 years worth.   I followed the instructions for the iphoto 11 upgrader for the library,  download, utility etc.  But no go.
Now Iphoto -- the app -- wont open at all without thisk pop up:
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.

    But
Then you do not have an iPhoto library - it is not possible to move "some" of an iPhoto library - it is a single entity and must be treates as such
Exactly how step by step did you do this?
I was able to move virtually all my photos and "events" prior to 2010.
I did create a copy of my old iPhoto library from the Passport drive on the desktop but that to gives me the "to open..."message when I tried to open it.
So run the library upgrader (applications folder ==> utilities) against tha tlibrary and then open it using iPhoto 9.5.x

I have reinstalled iphoto 11 and upgraded to the latets version 9.5. The message I get now is that I cannot open my library with this version of iphoto. It says that I have changed my library with a later versiob of iphoto (is there a later version - nothing I can upgrade to as far as I understand). I am asked to quit and use the latest version of iphoto (which I am using).
How do i get this right?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
