Unable to open network preferences

I'm unable to open the network preferences window inside system preferences. When I try, it just keeps saying "loading network" and nothing happens. I found a couple other discussions about this and trashing a .plist file, but it's not very clear how to solve the problem. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/, move everything but Boot and PowerManagement plist files to the Desktop (in a folder), restart, and see if you can reliably reset everything.

  • Unable to open System Preferences

I am unable to open Systems Preferences on my MacBook Pro. I click on Systems Preference in the Apple Menus and it flashes but does not open. Thanks.

By Apple Menus, I mean the Apple symbol on the top left. Then I select "system preference" and click on this. It does not open.
    I see thanks for explaining.
Where do I find the Applications - System Preferences? I thought this was it. Thank you for your response.
Open a Finder Window and you should see a folder called Applications or using your Dock click on Applications (probably on the far right of the Dock).
BTW did you try restarting your computer? That helps in many situations like this.

  • Unable to access Network Preferences

When going into network preferences I am recieving a message: "You cannot open Network Preferences pane because it is not availible to you at this time."
Because of it I cannot access a lot of components in the system preferences. I made sure The wifi is working since I can browse websites. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is solved: it was a policy set that I wasn't aware of.

My iMac does not connect to internet via wireless after I log in. I have to open network preferences and run the assistant everytime to make it work. Its a new system, updated to Mountain Lion,.

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • "Open Network Preferences" launches iPhoto

When I click on "Open Network Preferences", snow leopard immediately launches iPhoto 11 version 9.2 and starts importing system icons.  How can I stop this from happening?  There is not much to check / uncheck so I would assume it is burried deep in the OS X.

I click on the upper right icon on the title bar, select "Open XXXXXX preferences"
Which icon is this exactly? In mine, I'm only seeing "Open Network Preferences" from the Airport icon on the Menubar. What happens if you open Sys Prefs from the Dock? Does that launch iPhoto too? If not, then what happens if you select Network with Sys Prefs open and all the Preference Panes are showing? What happens if you right click on the Sys Prefs icon in the Dock and select Network from there?
What happens if you open SystemPreferences from Terminal with this command?
    open /Applications/System\ Preferences.app/
The main repository of system icons is located in
    System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle->Contents/Resources.
Right click on CoreTypes.bundle> Show Package Contents
If you go there, are you seeing any of those icons that appear with iPhoto? Don't mess with any of those. Just look.
Have you verified Disk in Disk Utility?
If you've done a reinstall, then IPhoto may be the next thing to look at.
One other thing to try; might or might not help: you could rebuild the Launch Services Database. In Terminal Copy/Paste
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Log out and back in or restart required.

  • Unable to open Network System Preferences

When I want to open Network System Preferences I get the message "Your network settings have been changed by another application". When I click "OK" the message keeps reappearing. The only way out is a Force Quit of System Preferences. What does this message mean and what can be done about it?
Maybe it's worth mentioning that I had to reinstall Mac OS a few days ago due to a screwed up security update. Could it have something to do with that? Apart from this my iBook works fine and I have no networking problems.
    Thanks for any helpful advice.

    Hi John
That didn't work but thanks anyway.
In the meantime I found another topic under "Mac OS X Tiger" that I had overlooked before dealing with this problem. It obviously has to do with the latest security update.

  • Cannot open network preferences, security, or downloads; blue screen appears

I have recently discovered that I cannot open my network preferences, security, or downloads folder. I do not know what else I am unable to open. For these three, I click upon them and instantly a blue screen appears, quickly followed by my desktop with all programs (except Finder) shut down, as if I was just logging on. The MacBook Pro is not yet a year old. I have recently downloaded the Amazon Cloud and was wondering if this could be causing the spastic behavior. My boyfriend seems to think that it is a corrupt file. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank you.

  • Unable to open Mail Preferences, can't remove/add accounts.

Sorry I posted this under Tiger discussions as well, but it wasn't my intention. I am running Leopard now:
    - I upgraded to Leopard today. My mail application that I have been using all along has been Entourage, but decided to switch to Mail.
    - Setup walked me through and I configured another account (besides the .mac account created automatically).
    - I wanted to change settings of the newly configured account, but when I go to Mail->Preferences... NOTHING HAPPENS!
    - Tried reinstalling Mail from CD. Tried rebooting MAC. Tried removing and reinstalling again... nothing!
So I can't open Mail Preferences to modify existing accounts. What can I do?

    Ernie,
    Thanks again.
This is strange indeed! I can not do what you suggested. We must not be on the same page.
When I select the Mail pull down menu right under "About Mail" is the "Preferences" item. There are a series of periods behind it which usually indicates more options when the item is selected or highlighted. In this case nothing happens until it is selected at which you are taken to a "general" screen full of items with scroll through lists to select from. Accounts is not an item. Holding down the option key doesn't change the results at any point I tried.
My Mail version is 3.0 (912.1/912).
I may have to give up on Mail and go back to Entourage or thunderbird.

  • Unable to open System Preferences - Keyboard and Mouse

Hi, My MacBook Pro don't open System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse Panel.
I tested reinstall the system, it's working, but after update to 10.5.2 the problem returned.
The following messages are displayed on the console when i click on "Keyboard and Mouse" icon.
    /Applications/System\ Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System\ Preferences

I'm having basically the same problem, though with a different console message:
5/2/08 15.04.49 System Preferences[55360] * -[NSURL initFileURLWithPath:]: nil string parameter
    Anyone else see this?

Normally you can hold CMD and drag off any unwanted icons.  If set by 3rd party software then it needs to be uninstalled.

  • "airport card not installed" and can't open network preferences

I was earlier having the problem of no ip address and not connecting to the Internet and self assigning an ip address.  I tried everything to fix that and on my last attempt I turned off the airport and shut down but now it says I dont have an airport card installed. How do I fix this?

Your running snow leopard which may be the case. Probably not but i recommend doing a clean install of snow leopard if the problem perrsists.
Also I suggest going to the apple store anyways. I personally enjoy finding help on the forums but sometimes if you book in advance going to the apple is a whole lot simpler.
You might also want to try upgrading your operating system to Lion or Mountain Lion which may fix the problem.
Yet another option would be to open up the laptop (Voids your warranty) and check is the airpot card is loose and maybe not being recognized.

  • Office 2011 on Macbook: unable to open network shared files but local copies are fine.

    All,
We have 3 users in our environment and only one person is having this issue. Accessing files from a shared location "\\servername\macbk$ gives an error such as:
"This file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding."
Copying the files locally open correctly.
We have investigated permissions, the share has the correct ACL permission (including everyone full). NTFS permissions on the folder are also set to everyone full. We've reinstalled Office 2011 and have tried Office Preview 2015. We've remapped the drive.
Other applications including text edit, Adobe, etc. open from the share just fine. This seems to be an issue only with OSX and Office, or vice versa.
Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • I cannot open my network preference

    Hi,
I'm working on a Mac OS X 10.6.8, and when I try to open network preferences, it always shows system preferences and says "Loading Network..." on the top. I have this problem after playing with network locations: I deleted all network locations with the exception of "automatic" from network preference panel. As a consecuence of this problem I cannot connect to internet via ethernet, and the wifi in my home does not work... it is important to say that my work depends on internet connection...
I don't have any backup of the system configuration: I mean I cannnot use Time Machine..
I really thank if someone of you can help me !
