Unable to open older iDVD projects

Hi,
I have iDVD, version 7.1.2, and I'm running Mac OS X Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini.
I have older iDVD projects that have were created on an older version of iDVD I had on my PowerBook G4 laptop.
When I try to open the older projects, I selec them in the Open dialog, but iDVD then presents the "Create a new project" dialog.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, was there a solution to this problem?
Sincerely,
Jaime

Welcome to the discussions, Edgar. I've see version 3 files that wouldn't open in 5 without first passing thru 4 or 4.5 - any chance you've got an earlier version around? If not, zip the file up and email it to me and I'll try to pass it thru 4 before going to 5 and saving it. Email's in profile.

  • IDVD '08 suddenly won't open older iDVD projects

All of a sudden, my iDVD projects created with iDVD 06 will not open in iDVD '08.
No changes to the system or software, currently running iDVD 7.0.2.
I've copied older iDVD projects from an external HD to my desktop and tried to open them with iDVD, and iDVD goes unresponsive after about 5 minutes. I've tried opening them directly from the external HD and still no joy.
Ownership and permissions don't seem to be a problem, and the files are not "project locked".
One week ago, this process was working like a charm. (Occasional "project locked" issues, but that's a trivial fix) Now, with absolutely no SW updates or anything, it's hanging up on me.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, have you solved it?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Unable to open existing idvd projects

When trying to open an iDVD existing project from the desktop, it will not open and comes up with a Connection failed - the server may not exist or it is not operational at this time.  Any recommendations on how to fix this and get it to work?

I think bymistake the system preset has removed or moved from <installa
    edpath>\Program files\Adobe\Adobe Encore CS5\Preset\internal preset\Blu-ray NTSC 1280x720 59.94p MPEG-2.epr.
Please check the preset in above location. If the "Blu-ray NTSC 1280x720 59.94p MPEG-2.epr" is not there in the above location then please search the preset in your system and copy that in the above location.
If you copy the preset in above location then you existing project will open.

  • Unable to load previous iDVD projects

Hi all I know this has been mentioned before but I cant find any threads with a positive outcome! Im unable to open previous iDVD projects now I have installed '08.
    Help anyone...?

    Let's try this first:
    Quit iDVD.
Locate a file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and get rid of it. iDVD will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permission repair using the Disk Utility.
The files can be found here:
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iDVD.plist
or you can use the finder (happy face on the dock) to copy and paste the bold type above.
Make sure to Restart the computer as well once the above has been performed. Hope this helps but if not, come on back.

  • IDVD6 and iPhoto6 installation rendered older iDVD projects useless

Had some iDVD5 projects in progress and then installed iLife6. Can't open the older iDVD projects with iDVD6, all iPhotos are missing and the system does not seem to be able to find them again. This is because the file stucture of iPhoto6 is different from the one in iPhoto5.
Worse, iDVD6 eventually hangs up and needs to be force-quit.
After this happens, iDVD6 always tries to open the old project, hangs up, etc. Deleting the preference file is the only option to get to iDVD6 again.
Does anybody have a solution? How can I use my older iDVD projects? How can I help iDVD6 to find the missing iPhoto files?

Did you backup your iPhoto Library before upgrading?
If so, you can do some renaming to get iDVD to point to the 'old' iPhoto Library that has the structure that iDVD needs to access it. I am sorry that I cannot get the exact instructions to you right now...look in iPhoto for posts addressing this. The poster Old Toad has specific directions...he is one of iPhoto's gurus...and you will probably be able to get your photos into iDVD again.
See if this helps at all:

  • Unable to burn saved iDVD project

I have exported a slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD and saved it in the Documents folder. Now when I go into iDVD to open an existing project, I can find the saved project in Documents but I am unable to get the project to open in iDVD so I can work on the slideshow and ultimately burn it to a DVD. How do you open a slideshow exported to iDVD after it has been saved to the Document folder??? Once an slideshow has been exported from iPhoto to iDVD can it be worked on (organized, music applied etc.) prior to being burned to a DVD? Please help, we're going crazy here!!!
    Paul from Wisconsin

    Hey Paul,
When you go to your documents folder what is the suffix (ending) of the file you exported? Is it .dvdproj or is it something else. I suspect you exported your slideshow out as a movie file (aka a Quicktime file). You need to open iDVD and then drag that movie file into the open iDVD window.
Once an slideshow has been exported from iPhoto to iDVD can it be worked on (organized, music applied etc.) prior to being burned to a DVD?
    No.
iDVD is the last step in the creation process. You should not be adding your slideshow to iDVD from iPhoto until the slideshow is exactly the way you want it. If you want to make changes to that slideshow, those changes are made in iPhoto and then you re-send your slideshow to iDVD.
Go to iPhoto, make your slideshow the way you want it, then go to Share > iDVD. This will take the slideshow and put it in iDVD where it needs to be. No extra steps.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't open saved iDVD project

I've been working on my first iDVD project for some time now using iMovie/iDVD08. The first version (movie and slideshow) works fine and I can open the associated .dvdproj file and make amendments if and as required. The DVD which was produced looks good.
However, as it's a 57-minute long movie, I was keen to introduce chapters. I used GarageBand for this purpose, sent the movie with chapters back to iDVD and added appropriate Scene menus. All worked fine on my computer. I saved the new project and retrieved it (just to be sure to be sure). All OK so far. I burned a new DVD which looks good and scene selection works great, however ....
can't now retrieve the .dvdproj. Any attempt to do so causes iDvd to hang. Activity monitor shows "Encoder server not responding." I need to force quit this process and also iDvd itself to get out of this bind. Very frustrating. I've been through this entire process now twice (recreating from first chapter-free version) and the problem recurs.
    Can anybody assist?

    Hello, Conor,
    Welcome to the discussions.
First, you should delete iDVD's preference file. With iDVD closed, go to your home folder(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist.
Drag this plist file to the trash. Don't worry; iDVD will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
See if you can open your project now.
Post back if this did not work.
Now, if you had an iDVD project that burned successfully, and you still have that iDVD project saved, you should be able to open it just as you did when you were working on it. Getting that message about the encoder server not responding is strange. Your project should already have encoded since you were able to burn a DVD. That problem may be resolved by deleting the plist file. You might also try just shutting down the computer and restarting it.
However, remember that iDVD is not like iMovie where the project's contents are actually saved within the project. An iDVD project should be thought of as a virtual or alias project. Its files point to their location on your computer. So, your iMovie is not physically within iDVD's files. If you move or delete any files that your iDVD project needs, iDVD will not be able to locate them.
It is highly recommended that you do a 'save as disc image' for each of your iDVD projects. This process looks just as if iDVD is burning a disk, but it is creating a disk image that can be used to do the actual burn, using Disk Utility.
It is useful to keep your projects as their disk images to do further disk-burning of that project in the future. The disk images cannot be edited, so be sure you are completely finished editing your project before creating a disk image. A disk image is a self-contained file, so you no longer need to keep your original iMovie or iDVD projects. Keeping only the disk images will also save drive space.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Why do you still need the iDVD project if you have already burned your DVD? If you want to make further edits to your iMovie and burn a new DVD, you can always recreate your iDVD project.....not the simplest solution, nut once you have created an iDVD project, it is usually fairly quick to recreate it .
If you just want to burn more disks from that project, you can always use the first DVD to make a disk image of your project, and use that disk image for further burning.

  • I have saved my project to my harddrive and then when I try to open it on another computer that uses final cut I am unable to open the edited project

i have saved my project to my harddrive and then when I try to open it on another computer that uses final cut I am unable to open and edit the project

Assuming this is an external HD, use finder to select the drive with your original computer, then press Cmd+i to show info. Go to the bottom of the info window and make sure 'Ignore ownership of this volume' is checked so that other computers can access it.

  • Cant open older Muse project

I have an older Muse project I'm trying to open.  My original desktop site folder has all the pages and assets in it.
I went to open my index.html and it told me to update to the latest version of Muse. I did. Now when I open the updated application,
and I search the site folder I can only see assets folders (images, css, etc) but non of the html pages. If I right click the html page and try to open the application that way Muse opens but just to a blank workspace. Wont load the project.
    Baffled
    Thanks in Advance
    Scott

    Hello,
I would suggest you to Search for the .Muse file in your machine.  Once you find that you will be able to open that in Muse.
you can search for *.muse by going to Start >> Search Programs and file. This will show you the list of all muse files in your machine. If there is no such file then it can not be reproduced.

  • IMovie-- Share to iDVD--- Opens previous iDVD project...why?

    Hello all,
I hope this is as simple as setting a preference somewhere. I have created an iMovie project and I am sending to iDVD via the "Share" menu. When I do this, iDVD automatically opens the PREVIOUS iDVD project I was working on. I would assume that it would let me choose to "Create New" from the iDVD "Share" menu....am I mistaken? Is there a simple preference change that I am missing?
Just for the record, I usually export from iMovie to iDVD to "Full Quality" then import that into iDVD. However, this project has many chapter markers that I need to include in the DVD. From everything I've been reading, I HAVE to use the "Share" to iDVD option in order to preserve the chapter markers.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated:)

    Klaus1...
Thanks for the advice. If I understand what you're saying, I can just close the iDVD project and then open a new one and import the iMovie project file I'm working with?
    Karl,
I have done this several times and each time iDVD was not running when I "Shared" to iDVD from iMovie. Although, if I open a new iDVD project, save it, then close it...then "Share" to iDVD from iMovie, the correct iDVD project will open. (the last iDVD project open).
Anyway, it seems that there is a way to accomplish what I need, so I'll go with the former method. I will mess with it further after I get done burning the several copies of this project that I need. (wedding video as a surprise for family members;)
    Thanks for your advice!

  • Unable to open older pages documents

    hello
i've got a problem with the pages software.
i've got the older version of 'pages' (4.3) and i've installed just recently the new version.  at least i think i have.  when i go to apple store and see recent downloads, i can see the new version of pages has been installed/bought (although i don't recall paying for it or receiving an invoice??)
however, i'm now unable to open any pages documents that i created in 4.3.   i keep getting the message 'a new version of pages is needed to open this document'.
when i click on 'more info' i get the apple pages site and i click on 'view in apple store' but from the apple store the new pages is 'installed'.
so i'm stuck and typically, like today, i reeeeeeeally need this file.
    i've got a basic mac (bought in 2010) - i'm running os x 10.9.2.  there's no updates currently available.
    any ideas anyone??
    many thanks

You have Pages 5 in Applications folder and Pages 4.3 in Applications/iWork 09 folder.
Pages 5 is taking command and it seems you have opened the documents in PAges 5 without knowing it though they do not look quite the same when opened. See if you can open the document in Pages 5 and then go File > revert  or File > export > Pages 09

  • Portrait orientation not recognised in Older iDVD project

I have posted some of these symptoms in various places, but I have had so many issues with this upgrade that I haven't had the time to thoroughly address each on in detail.
I upgraded ti iLife06 over the weekend and now an iDVD project that I started in iDVD 5 is significantly "messed up".
Firstly, it cannot find the images in the new iPhoto Library's new paradigm for folder management. So I have to locate these manually. I have tried to point iDVD to both the "Modified" iPhoto Library folder and the "Originals". Not sure which is correct. (I know that some have advised duplicating your old iPhoto library and pointing iDVD 6 to the "old" version)
Second, after manually locating all of the photos included in the iDVD project, iDVD does not seem to recognise that some of the photos are Portrait orientation. These were automatically rotated by my camera and imported into iPhoto accordingly.
Does anyone have an idea why iDVD 6 cannot do this AND how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    J.E. Flynn

  • Can't burn new DVD on older iDVD project

I made an iDVD project with all our summer pics for the kids, and burned DVDs for them. I got the pics from folders I'd made in iPhoto. Now I'm trying to burn another DVD and get the following message: Errors in Project. There were errors during the project validation. These errors have to be fixed before burning the project."
I have no idea what the errors are - the only thing I've done since burning the original DVDs is delete the old folders in iPhoto. The pictures are all still in the library.
    Please help & thanks - J

Does this mean that I have to somehow "save" or "lock" the folders that I've used to create an iDVD project?
Just don't change any names or paths to images used in your active iDVD projects if you expect to reedit/reuse them.
Once you have finished a iDVD project, save the encoded project as a disk image file. The disk image file is not dependent on the orignal source content file name/location. This will enable you to burn additional copies to writable media in the future. You can NOT reedit a disk image file without using something like DVDxDV to convert the mpg-2 content to something that can be reused by iDVD in a new project.
If you have LOTS of external hard disk space, you can save your completed iDVD project as an iDVD Project Archive file. This will contain all the source material needed to reedit the project and as a result may be very large!

  • Unable to open older versions of FCPX projects

I am trying to teach myself FCPX from the book 'Final Cut Pro X Advanced Editing'. The book comes with three DVDs with projects and problems to solve on them... I could open the projects a few months ago with the trial version of FCPX but since purchasing the full program (and subsequently leaving it for almost a year before reopening it) my mac has updated the software and I now cant open any of the preprepared projects... Annoying!
It's most likely something that I'm doing wrong but when I try and import a project from the sparse image of FCP disc 1 I have all of the folders (and the events are all there) but the project icon is greyed out and won't allow me to open it.
I could create a project and import all of the events but they all then require renaming etc plus some of the project are already edited together and just need finessing as is the point of some of the project tutorials.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Gareth

    Hi Tom,
It is the Michael Wohl book yes. It's title is: Final Cut Pro X Advanced Editing, so I expected it to work with FCPX...
Thanks for the link, I'll have a read through now.
The events are all there load but projects are greyed out so I had to create a project and rename the clips to start with but it's getting a little trickier to follow using this method now so loading the pre-prepared test projects would be far easier... I've also noticed that a couple of functions mentioned in the book aren't there like the clip stabilization in the analyze and fix window (not such an issue as it appears in the info screen when you select a clip so presumably does it automatically if you select the radio button to the left?).
    I'll keep trying.
    Cheers,
    Gareth
