Unable to open older pages documents

hello
i've got a problem with the pages software.
i've got the older version of 'pages' (4.3) and i've installed just recently the new version.  at least i think i have.  when i go to apple store and see recent downloads, i can see the new version of pages has been installed/bought (although i don't recall paying for it or receiving an invoice??)
however, i'm now unable to open any pages documents that i created in 4.3.   i keep getting the message 'a new version of pages is needed to open this document'.
when i click on 'more info' i get the apple pages site and i click on 'view in apple store' but from the apple store the new pages is 'installed'.
so i'm stuck and typically, like today, i reeeeeeeally need this file.
i've got a basic mac (bought in 2010) - i'm running os x 10.9.2.  there's no updates currently available.
any ideas anyone??
many thanks

You have Pages 5 in Applications folder and Pages 4.3 in Applications/iWork 09 folder.
Pages 5 is taking command and it seems you have opened the documents in PAges 5 without knowing it though they do not look quite the same when opened. See if you can open the document in Pages 5 and then go File > revert  or File > export > Pages 09

  • Unable to open a Page document on another computer

I used Page to create a document and then emailed it to my home to continue working. I have Page on this computer, but when I try to open I get the message -- Unable to open “Gardiner List.pages” because it isn't a valid Pages document.

I have just had the same problem. Another Mac user sent me a Pages 09 file that had been saved in Pages 08 format, but I could not open with my Pages 08. Then he sent me a Pages 08 file he created and I could not open that either. He also sent me a DOC version of the file, which I could open in Pages 08. Also, he had no problem opening a Pages 08 document that I sent him. Help.

  • Unable to open MOST Pages documents

    Help!
I use Pages to create invoices; I went to create an invoice today and Pages just sits there, not responding. I've had to Force-quit everytime I try to open one of my previous invoice documents or almost any other document (please note-there is no problem starting a new document). I used the app just fine a few days ago. There are three documents that open no problem (2 created just a week ago, one created over 2 years ago); however, everything else I try just causes Pages to lock up. I trashed everything related to iWork '06 that I could find (including the Library files) and reinstalled iWork '06 from my DVD. No dice-same problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you in advance!

Do you have a backup of those files? Have you tried restoring from it? What about Fonts, have you checked your fonts with FontBook? Perhaps you used a Font in those docs that will not open that you did not use in the three that will. Have you deleted or disabled any fonts? If so, that might be a problem. Can you create a new invoice, save it, and then reopen it?

  • Upgrading older Page documents

Please confirm for me my understanding of this problem.   When I try to open older Pages documents in Yosemite, the message is "to open the document, save it with Pages '09 first".  For the record, after upgrading to Yosemite, there is no iWork '09 folder in my Applications folder.
I doubt that I have used many (or any) of the features that didn't migrate from Pages '09.  My desire is merely to upgrade the documents to the current version.
As I understand it, the solution is:
    1. Reinstall iWork '09 from the DVD (which I have).
    2. Download and apply iWork Update 9.3
    3. Open older files and save them as Pages '09 documents; then open them again with current version of Pages.
Can someone please confirm that steps 1. and 2. are correct, and that they do not present any problems on a MacBook Pro (late 2013) running Yosemite.
    Thanks much.

It sounds to me as though you have some legacy Pages ’08 documents that Pages v5 dropped support. If you still have access to Pages ’08, export the problematic '08 documents to MS Word .doc, and then open these with Pages v5.5. That would avoid steps 1 - 3 altogether.
Otherwise, steps 1 - 3 are correct. Here again, you could also export them as MS Word documents too — as backups.
Pages v5.5 lacks about 100+ features/functionality that was available in Pages ’09 v4.3. Consequently, it will filter out document content that it does not support, such as some templates, linked Text boxes, the use of Mail Merge, bookmarks… ad nauseum. Then it autosaves it in v5.5 .pages format to the same ’09 filename sans your original content.

  • We are unable to open a Pages 5.0.1 document in Pages 4.2 and retain ability to edit all aspects of the document. I have tried saving the 5.0.1 version as Pages '09 and am still unable to open it in the earlier version of pages. Help?

No, it isn't. Pages 5 isn't compatible with Pages 4.3 as it is lacking more than 90 features that Pages 4 has. So when you open a Pages 4 document in Pages 5 only the simplest documents will look the same in Pages 5.
Pages 4 can't open Pages 5 documents at all!! You have to export back to Pages 09 as I said above.
You probably will be more happy if you just use Pages 4 (Pages 09). There are many threads in this forum that describes the lack of compatibility between the two versions. Pages 5 is in my view not Pages anymore.
If you don't desperately need Pages 5 for moving documents over iCloud to new iOs devices don't use it.

  • Older page documents wont open

Can't seem to open old Pages documents in either '08 or '06
They were saved fine, and haven't been touched since.
Saw a previous report saying its the XML file. I replaced it with the fle of one that opened and found it relates to all the image file locations.
Is there anyway of converting, opening or importing the document so I can retrieve the data?
    Thanks

The important part of a Pages document is the Index.xml.gz file.
If you replace it by one grabbed from an other document, you will get this other document minus the inserted pictures.
What was the exact contents of the 'previous report saying its the XML file'?
What have you made with the original Index.xml.gz file ?
If you didn't keep it all is lost.

Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.

You may first want to look into Safari's "Installed Plugins" section within the browser. This is (usually) found under the Safari Help header in the top of a browser. I say usually, because I don't use Safari often and mine is an older version. They handle applications and plugins like most others, to a point.
I see in Safari Installed Plugins that mine would use
    application/pdf
    Acrobat Portable Document Format
Acrobat Reader & reader plugin v9.5.5 for web browsers
(in Safari 5.x, where I looked into this)
While I use FireFox, SeaMonkey (Mozilla) and others, where I can choose in preferences the helper applications to open from the browser, Safari has different methods; so if you can change this in the preferences or settings of Safari in a later version I am not certain.
You could see what the defaults are by using Safari help menu to open the Installed plugins, and maybe find out what happend to Adobe reader plugin. Could be it was 'sandboxed' in a later OS X and needs to be installed differently to be accepted as safe.
It is easier to set how a file type is handled once it is inside the computer and not held in the browser; by file type in general or specific to each single document. I do both, and seldom let an a browser do these things due to security considerations. I download and open them, only then if I feel they are safe.
Sorry to not have a specific answer for that anomaly.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Cannot open any Pages documents made prior to upgrading to Yosemie. Pages does not appear in the iCloud list in system preferences.

Upgraded to Yosemite. Upgraded Pages to latest version. Uninstalled older versions of pages (made with iWork '09). Now I cannot open any Pages documents made prior to upgrading. I keep getting the same redundant message: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document. You can download the latest version of Pages from the Mac App Store." Not sure if this is relevant, but Pages does not show up in the iCloud list in systems preferences.

Ok, I found pages on the iCloud drive. But the behavior of Pages is still the same, problem unchanged.

  • I can open some pages documents, but others I cannot.

I can open some pages documents and others I cannot. This just started. I have a mac os x 10.9.4. It says I don't have any updates available.  I have no idea why this is happening. Please advise. Thanks!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
If you are unhappy about this mess that Apple has created, review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.

  • Last time I updated pages I lost features I liked and was unable to open some pages files.  Now I see the features I liked are back but I have a lot more files to worry about.  Will I be able to open files created in 5.2 if I upgrade to 5.5.3?

Within reason, Pages v5.2 documents are forwards compatible with Pages v5.5.3. Apple introduced the single file format document as a default with Pages v5.5.3 which is not backwards compatible with Pages v5 on Mavericks.
However, they also provided a File > Advanced > Change File Type > {Single File, Package} menu that allows you to change the current Pages v5.5.3 document into the backwards compatible Package type document. You would follow this transformation with a File > Save operation to complete it.

  • TS3276 i am unable to open web pages from email links on my ipad

I am unable to open web pages from email links on my ipad

A few more details might help, if nobody else recognizes this.
What happens when you try to open the links?
Can you post an example of a link that doesn't work?
Is there any particular source for the mail with the (bad) links, or is mail from all sources failing?
If you happen to know it, what's the format of the mail message?  (Maybe the message is an image?)
Do the embedded links work as expected from an OS X system running Mail.app, or some system and some other other mail client?
To view the link in iOS: if you press on and hold your finger on an embedded link in most contexts, iOS will show a pop-up with the link contents, and will offer to copy it.  You can use that to acquire and post the link.  If pressing and holding on the link doesn't offer the pop-up, the format of the link itself may not be valid, or it might not really be a link.

  • Pages crashes when trying to open a pages document.

Hi there, I'm new to the forum.
I have been working on a business plan since June and amended it as recently as yesterday. I saved it regularly and I closed the application normally.
However, on trying to open the document today Pages I get the progress window that tells me the file is opening. It gets halfway and I get the window with "The application Pages quit unexpectedly".
I have tried the reset option and everything else I can think of. I can open other pages documents it seems only this one is corrupted.
Is there anything I can do to recover my work. Any help much appreciated.

    You got a corrupted file.
This is why I wrote many times: don't rely on Save.
Use Save as so you will be able to check that the newly saved document is OK before removing the old one.
You may also activate the feature allowing Pages to keep the late version when it saves.
