Unable to Open Pictures in IPhoto

I am unable to open any picture. I double click the picture resulting in a black screen. When clicking Faces I see the names of the people stored but not their faces.
I have used the Time Capsule trying to restore - No Results
I have reinstalled the application - No Results
Anyone knows a fix

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. *Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. *Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. *A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. *A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. *A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*If none of these help*:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Not able to open pictures in iPhoto library in Photoshop Elements 4.0

Bit of a strange one ... I am unable to open pictures in Photoshop Elements 4.0 which have been imported using iPhoto '08. Pictures which have been received as, say, e-mail attachment and saved open without any trouble.
When I go to *file --> open* in Photoshop I do see the pictures under *Media --> Photos --> iPhoto --> photos* but when I try and open one of them nothing happens.
To complicate matters further, if I go to events and select one of the events the photos do open in Photoshop - but rather than just opening one photo the whole event is opened.
The version of Photoshop Elements I'm using is 4.0 and iPhoto version 7.1.3

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • HT201071 I am unable to transfer pictures to iPhoto from my new Nikon D4S DSLR. Any suggestions?

I recently purchased the Nikon D4S professional DSLR. I am unable to import pictures to iPhoto. Any suggestions?

I've now achieved success at my end. Let me describe.
The Nikon D4S uses either USB 3.0 or Gigabit Ethernet to communicate with a computer. It speaks USB without any intervention or configuration on the user's part, it looks like mass storage. Ethernet connectivity requires a bit more configuration. My issue was getting Ethernet connectivity working.
The camera communicates via Ethernet in several manners: FTP transfer to server, HTTP web server, PC communication and Camera Control. Each requires setup both on the camera and other end to work properly. Configuration is mostly done on the camera. It's done pushing buttons therNikon offers a utility - "Wireless Transmitter Utility" - to help with setup via the computer.
I wanted "PC Communication" as it simply pushes the contents of memory cards directly into a directory on the computer that you specify. I began with my 13" Retina MBP, running 10.9.2 and using v 1.3 of Nikon "Wireless Transmitter Utility" which configures the camera/computer to handle IP traffic, wireless or wired. I was planning to directly connect the camera to the MBP (w/o router or switch).
To use the Nikon utility, you need to have both an Ethernet cable and a USB cable. You connect the camera via USB, turn on the camera and launch the app. You choose which type of Ethernet functionality you want to setup and use the app to configure that. About 3 or 4 steps in, the apps will load your configuration (IP address, ports, handshakes, names, etc.) into the camera via USB. That's where I was getting stuck. It would simply timeout.
I said earlier that I knew the connection (Ethernet) would work as I'd set it up manually on the camera. I could get web server (HTTP) comms working but could not get PC Xfer working. This told me that it wasn't hardware, drivers or cabling but something in software.
Last evening I tried the setup again, this time on a MacBook Air. Because the Air had no direct Ethernet connectivity, I connected the camera via cable to a TimeCapsule. The Air was connected wirelessly. I downloaded the Nikon utitility and found a newer version - v 1.5. Upon connecting the camera via USB I was able to get past my previous block and could add/delete configurations. I deleted all of them and began fresh.
Success! The MBA --(wireless)--> TimeCapsule --(Ethernet)--> D4S worked fine. I specified a directory off of root, enabled the transfer on the camera and voila! It streamed the entirety of the CF card onto the computer. I got both RAW and JPEG files across.
I then installed v 1.5 of Nikon "Wireless Transmitter Utility" on my 13" Retina MBP. I connected the camera via Thunderbolt --> Ethernet with similarly successful results. It is now fixed.
As for being able to interpret the .NEF (RAW) files, I cannot say whether or not any Apple software will do so as I use Lightroom.
    I hope this helps someone.

  • Opening pictures in iPhoto from other programs

I'm wanting to use pictures from my iPhoto library in other programs-- i.e. Photoshop Elements or to upload to a website. When working from Photoshop Elements, when I go to File>Open>Pictures>iPhotoLibrary I get an error message. The only way I seem to be able to USE any of my photos stored in iPhoto is if I copy them to my "pictures" folder in the Finder and then use them. Of course, this means I am using double the space on my hard drive. There must be an easier way. What am I doing wrong?

So if I use Photoshop as an external editor, the Save function is only saving a copy? Does the copy go back into the original event this way?
When you set Photoshop (or an Image Editor) as an external and then go to edit the pic here's what happens:
    1. iPhoto makes a copy of the file and sends the copy to Photoshop
    2. Make your edits
    3. Save.
    4. The Edited version is returned to iPhoto and saved in the Modified Folder.
    5. A new thumbnail is made and replaces the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window
Thereafter if you want to get to the Original you have several options:
a: Photos -> Revert to Original - this destroys the modified version
b: Export using the File -> Export command, set the *Kind: Original*
    c. Any other form of export yields the edited version.
In Windows if one chooses save when editing in Photoshop, the original is overwritten,
This is true in Photoshop on the Mac too, the difference is you're using iPhoto, and it's +iPhoto making the copy+. Hence the 'Save As' to preserve your original is unnecessary.
which i can't seem to access in Finder browse mode or from iPhoto
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • I am unable to open pictures on my iphone5 through the texts?

    I have resarted my phone
I have ensureed that the MMS is chosen
nothing happens when I tap on or hold the picture in the text

Reinstall it.This time delete the receipts first.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
    Important:
As you're on 10.9.3 you'll need to update iPhoto to v9.5 before opening it. Use Software update.

  • Unable to load pictures in iphoto after upgrade to iphoto 4.0.3

I just installed iLife which contains iphoto 4.0.3. When I tried to open my iphoto the photos were unable to load. I saved a copy of my library - so I know they are there. I tried to installed an upgrade from the dowload page - but it says that I do not have the iphoto 4.0.3 application?? and was unsuccessful. What can I do to get my photos in my library to appear in iphoto?

THis is the iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x) forum
Are you sure that you just installed iPhoto 4? If so you should post to http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=845

  • Unable to open picture

    Hi there
    I have 2 problems!
1 is that in my iphoto library it shows all of my pictures, also in my folders it will show the picture I want to look at. But when I try to open it as a individual the spinning segments just keep spinning and no picture appears. The picture will flash on the screen for about half of a second but then the spinning starts and it never reappears. Some of the pictures have disappeared from my screensaver also my wallpaper.
This only happens on some pictures not all.
My 2nd problem is that when I view some pics in the library they are fine, but click on some individuals and they rotate anti clockwise but state vertical in the library.
If I rotate they so the are the correct way, they appear on their side in the library.
This has all happened since installing Leopard X.

    Mr. Bump
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
Try Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Unable to view pictures in iphoto  which are in Finder/picture/iphotolib

    Hi,
I am new to Forum discussion and have a problem with my files in iphoto.
Trying to find some specific pictures in my library file in tIphoto and not being able to locate them anymore, I checked in the Finder/picture/iphotolibrary if I could trace them.
I found there the one I was looking for together with plenty others which were in the yearly files (but were not in Iphoto.
I tried to reimport them but was not allowed to do so (the message saying they were already in iphoto)
How can I get these pictures to be viewed in Iphoto again i
Is there a way to check that all the pictures in Finder/picture/iphotolibrary are in Iphoto
    Thank's for your help

    thank s for your answer.
I will do so for the one I have found.
But is there a way to check whether a roll in theFinder/picture/iphotolibrary is in Iphoto
Or to be sure that I have in Iphoto my whole lot of picture to create a new library in iphoto to replace the "corrupted" one
    thank' s in advance

  • How can I get ArcSoft Photostudio 6 to open pictures from iPhoto?

Moving from PC to iMac.  On PC, I could load and also save to my photo library from Photostudio 6.  But when I see my iPhoto library when trying to open from Photostudio 6, it's pale and I can't open it.  Is there a way to unlock this, or be able to upload from iPhoto to Photostudio 6?
    Thanks!

No idea whart Photostudio 6 is - specific support for it would be from the author
iPhoto uses a SQLite database you you NEVER directly accdess or change it in any way
the general answer for access If Photostudio 6 is a immage editor then you can set it as an external editor int eh iPhoto prefereences - if it is a photo management program then you can not use it with iPhoto - to bring photos into another photo manager use the media browser in the lower left hand corner of the open window (under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto)
