Unable to open Quicktime on a Windows PC

I've just helped a friend out by capturing in some PAL mini-DV tapes and exporting as Quicktime DV PAL from Final Cut Pro and burning to DVD-R as data files using Toast.
My friend has installed the latest version of Quicktime and is getting the "does not understand the files" message. The files also won't import into Sony Vegas, and when he tries copying them onto an external hard drive it says there isn't enough space, even though there is over 400GB spare.
He has also tried importing the files onto his PC laptop and again, Quicktime "does not understand the files".
So just about everything that could go wrong has... any suggestions? I've never used a PC so I have no idea what to suggest.

The file will automatically be compatible.
Not completely true. Yes, Macs and PCs can share PowerPoint fprmats but, in recent years, you have to be aware of what Office version the other people are using. You need to save in a format level that works for your current version AND below.
Here are the "equivalent" versions:
Office 2003 Windows and Office Mac 2004
Office 2007 Windows and Office Mac 2008
Office 2010 Windows and Office Mac 2011
If you absolutely know that everyone who receives your Office flles has a equivalent version of Office as yours, send as it. However, I often work with groups having mixed Macs and PCs and a lot of variants of Office. There, the safe path it to selct the "Save as... option of the lowest version, usualy "<Office apps> 97-2004 (.ppt)" That works for both Macs and PCs. The Option looks like this in Office 2008, the lastest version I have:
It's the same for any Office app--remember that sending the latest version may leave some people with older versions out of the loop.
There is a workabout for the receiver but I'm finding that a lot of newer computer users can't deal with a file unless they double-click something. The workabout is to open the Office app (PowerPoint in your case) and then use PPs "Open..." command to open the file from the app. That usually gets the file open, but too many late adopters of technology (we all know those types) seem totally befuddled by anything more that it takes to play Angry Birds on a phone.

  • I am unable to open Acrobat X in Windows 7

I am unable to open Acrobat X in Windows 7. The shortcut appears on the desktop but when I click it nothing happens. Same from the program list. Just re-installed from cd but still nothing.

Since you can not open Acrobat (assume there were no errors shown with the installation and this is a new installation), then go to Control Panel>Programs & Features and select Acrobat. Select the uninstall/change. Along the way you should be provided an option to repair -- do that. If you like, you can also download the updates from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows and install them in order.

  • Unable to Open a New Browser Window

I have a couple users who are having trouble logging in to Discoverer on new PCs. They are using Internet Explorerer 8. They are able to get to the login screen, but when the hit connect (or Go) they get an error: "Unable to open a new browser window. Ensure that you do not have popup windows disabled for this site."
Obviously the first thing I had them do was turn off the popup blocker all together. But they still get the error (even after they restart their PC). Other than that, is there something I am missing in how they need to configure IE8? I'm personally used to using IE6 at work and don't know much about configuration setting for IE8.
    Thanks!

    Thanks -
That's how I've been doing it since installment.  After I wrote  earlier, I

Probably 5 minutes.  If it persists, may take it out and  reload.

  • Unable to open a second firefox window if i have already a firefox window running

I'm unable to open a new firefox window if i have one already running. Previously this action was allowed. so i would like to ask if this action has been disallowed after the update ?

You have a corrupted Firefox 3.6.12 user agent (Firefox/2.0.0.14):
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 Firefox/2.0.0.14
    See * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_your_useragent_string_to_its_compiled-in_default
Check the <b>general.useragent</b> prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
You can open the <i>about:config</i> page via the location bar, just like you open a website.
    Filter: <b>general.useragent</b>
If any <i>general.useragent</i> prefs are bold (user set) then right-click that pref and choose <i>Reset</i>.
Are you starting Firefox with the -no-remote command line switch?
Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).

  • Unable to open leopard files on windows server

    Hi,
We had a mac which was on Leopard and saved files to the server
The file system we use is a Windows 2008 File Server, this has worked fine with leopard for years
However I understand that Leopard splits the files into resource forks - and that Lion has dropped support for these files.
That particular mac is now on Lion as we upgraded and encountering LOTS of issues
I unable to open or edit lots of the files as i believe chunks of the files are missing.
E.g an .eps file showed as 740KB on leopard - Viewing from a windows PC it was 730kb for the .eps and 10kb for the ._ resource fork.
Now that we are on the LION upgrade, we only see the .eps file and it is only 730kb. Information missing is things such as preview (quark), Font data, type of file, version number
Is there anyways to fix this? we have hundreds! of images, files etc created with leopard and now upgraded to lion they all have become useless!
Rejoining the resource forks and files together so that they are usable on lion
    Thanks

You also may want to post this in the Lion forum, someone there may have some insight.

  • Unable to open organizer ??  Windows XP  PSE 5.0

Unable to open organizer, editor seems to be ok. A few seconds after I click on organizer this message appears " The action you have requested could not be completed because the application is not responding. It may still be loading or waiting for a response from You."  This problem first occured soon after attacking a new Kodak video camera to my computer.  The software that comes with the camera, uploaded from the camers, is Media Impression by ArcSoft. The JPG files on my computer now have the ArcSoft logo included with the file names. When I click on a JPG file, I get this message: "Windows cannot access the specitied device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."  Any help will certainly be appreciated.

Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Unable to open airport utility on Windows 7

I'm unable to open Airport Utility on my Windows 7 laptop because I keep getting an error message saying Airport Utility requires Windows 7 service pack 1 or later.  SP1 was already installed.  I tried deleting and reinstalling SP1 and Airport Utility still won't open.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

This can happen when the Airport Utility installation download can't find an authentication file - short of doing a clean install of Windows 7, try the following:
    1. Delete any old Windows folders if Windows 7 was an upgrade
    2. Turn off anti-virus programs
    3. Turn off the Windows Firewall
    4. Delete any partial installations of the AU that may be present
If the above does not work then try to download the previous version of the AU 5.5.3 at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391

  • Unable to open any sort of window in Firefox

Hey guys, this issue started happening for a while, I had Firefox and Snow Leopard and everything worked fine. I think the issue began happening after a specific version of OS Snow Leopard but I am unsure.
I ended up reformatting my entire computer with OSX Lion, thinking that somehow maybe something was just corrupted on my old install. This however was not the case, Firefox fails to open any sort of window.
By window I mean, "view source", "Tools -> downloads", or any other sort of Firefox window that would make it pop up anything. None of that data works. This is a brand new install of Firefox along with a new install of OSX Lion, I have no plugins etc... yet the issue continues.
I have another Mac which doesn't experience this issue, however that is a newer Mac the end of 2010, and the Mac I am currently using is from 2008.
I have tried downgrading to 5.0 and it's the same issue. I will try downgrading to 4.0 and respond back with any info I may gather, hopefully this is an easy fix.
    Thanks!

  • Opening QuickTime references using Windows SDK

I'm trying to use Quicktime SDK on the PC to open up a QuickTime reference file so that I can get the reference paths for all of the media contained within the tracks. The reason for this is that we sometimes need to get Windows to authenticate the paths that the reference file points to prior to opening the QuickTime file otherwise it will ask the use to browse for media. Out app is automated without a UI so this is undesirable.
I have been writing a Utility to parse the QuickTime reference file and return the path of the Referenced media in each of the tracks. The problem I am having is that when I open the movie, if the referenced media is unreachable I am prompted by Quicktime to search for the media. I thought that I would be able to resolve this by setting the flag newMovieDontResolveDataRefs. Unfortunately while opening a a movie in this mode doesn't prompt me to search for the media, it also seems to reset the paths of the media files referenced by the tracks to the directory containing my application. This is no help at all. What I need is the original path to the reference file(s), regardless of whether or not the computer is able to reach them. Is this possible, and if not, what is the logic behind this behaviour, it doesn't seem to make any sense - why would I want to break my reference paths?

I'm afraid we don't get a lot of QuickTime developers dropping by here, Damien. It might be worth checking in at the QuickTime-API or the QuickTime-users mailing list instead:

  • A hardy ghost of Firefox is apparently running in my computer and I am unable to open Firefox, even after Window restarts and an uninstall/re-install. How do I find and fix this problem?

What happened first is Firefox was revving and using most of my CPU, ultimately "not responding" too easily and for too long, so I closed it in order to reopen it, but Firefox remained running in background (Task Mgr, Processes) after closing, continuing to use almost all my CPU, so I ended the process in Task Mgr.
When I went to re-open it, window opened and told me Firefox could not be opened because another "instance"(?) was still running, to close it or restart Windows. I couldn't close it because I already closed it AND ended the process, so I restarted Windows.
When I tried to open Firefox, I got the same pop-up. I think I restarted Windows one more time, and then uninstalled Firefox, except for my personal settings (in order to save the bookmarks, which I couldn't find in the Firefox folder in Program Files (only Favorites, which were not my bookmarks; I later wondered if they were part of the Firefox add-on "Add This" --??).
I then uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it. When I tried to start the newly re-installed program, I had the same pop-up telling me Firefox was already running and to close it or restart Windows.
I searched my computer folders for anything that might help, did a Search of the computer for "Firefox", and was given some Firefox folders and if they weren't from the new re-install, I deleted them. One thing I noticed was that the program folder did NOT have the program (Firefox.exe) icon to start Firefox.
I uninstalled Firefox and had to resort to using Internet Explorer, which I do NOT like. My rich library of bookmarks are who knows where.
I don't know if this is related, but in searching my computer's Administrative Services and Component Tools (and the like) hoping to find something that would help me fix Firefox, I inadvertently learned that "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly. Name: .NET Framework 1.1 Config."
Please help me get Firefox back and figure out what is going on in my computer that led to this. I am a basic user and not techno-computer saavy, so if anyone can help me with this, please give me step-by-step bonehead instructions.
Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

Make sure that Firefox is set as the default browser.

  • Found a fix for this:  Unable to open Itunes Store on windows XP

    Hi,
I have been searching for this all weekend.  For the last month we have been unable to connect to Itunes store.  We can connect to the Internet and also access to itunes itself.  I have phoned Apple as well as our service provider.  No luck with the solutions offered.  I have uninstalled and downloaded it again.  I have done the winsock suggestion.  I have disabled the firewall solution.  I have gone into security settings and clicked enable the miscellaneous part.  I have run as administrator.  Basically everything from this forum and numerous others and also from advice from apple and my service provider.  NOTHING WORKED for me on this computer.  However on my Laptop which is vista the winsock fix did work.  Still didn't solve my desktop until I found another solution and tried.  Blow me down it worked.  2 days and hooray.....finally.  I found this on a Geek website called "geeks to go" and I have cut and pasted it from there.
    This is it.
Copy and paste the text in the code box below into Notepad.
    @Echo on
    pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
    attrib -h -s -r hosts  echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
    attrib +r +h +s hosts  popd  ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew  ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh winsock reset all
    netsh int ip reset all
    shutdown -r -t 1
    del %0
Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Double-click flush.bat file to run it. Your computer will reboot.
Note: For Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click flush.bat and select "Run as Administrator".
Hope this one helps anyone out there that has tried most of the other fixes.  No bugs or viruses from this...so far.
    Steve

You're probably going to need to install service pack 2 or 3.
