Unable to overclock i5 2500k

Last night I updated BIOS to the latest version which brought back the voltage control again. After doing the normal CMOS and default settings restore, I applied my OC again and tested it. It worked fine. Today I wanted to give lower voltages a try so I bumped them down a little, but when I entered windows this time I found that the overclock had not been applied. I've tried everything, it just won't overclock anymore. No matter what I put the multiplier on it remains at 3,3GHz and I've confirmed it with CPU-Z, 3DMark11 and RealTemp. I've tried restoring defaults and reseting CMOS again but that doesn't help either.
Help me!
My board is MSI P67A-C45.

Recommend to reflash to the UEFI/BIOS version that was working, & notify MSI Tech Support of your results & experience with the latest update revision you tried.

Added: In CPU Features, did you remember to set the durations & limits?
Durations & limits? What are you refering to?
I managed to fix the problem somehow, although I'm not sure how... In any case it runs like it should now.

  • Unable to overclock GeForce 670

    NVIDIA driver: 310.19
This card is factory clocked at 1000Mhz.
In linux, it is stuck at 705Mhz (under load, max performance).
I am unable to overclock this.
Is there a work around here?
    Any input is appriciated.

I think that information that the nvidia driver is reporting is incorrect... I get better performance on Team Fortress 2 on Linux than Windows yet the driver shows on "Performance Level" 2 and 3 the "Graphics Clock" is 705 MHz and memory at 3004 MHz but on Windows I see higher "Graphics Clock" 1019MHz - 1228 MHz
While I think "Performance Level" 2 is correct... 3 isn't
I have a MSI GeForce GTX 670 Power Edition OC

  • Maximum safe voltage for onboard GPU (GT overclocking) on 2500k using Z68A-GD65?

i am currently stuck on using onboard graphics of my 2500k which is HD 3000 until i wait for my new GPU to arrive(probably 2-3weeks from now  )
i looked everywhere and can't find any answer on how high should be the limit for onboard GPU overclocking
    the option is from 1.0-1.35v
how high is the safe limit for onboard gpu voltage so i could start pushing the chip ?

Hi all I am looking to overclock my i5 2500k and GD65 to 4.8ghz 24/7 is this safe to do so without degrading my components? Also I am not very clear with all the functions in the bios, there seems to be a lot if voltage settings. Can someone please advise me on starter settings I should try and if they don't work what then gets changed.
    Thanks

Well thats how they keep it clean and tidy here and the majority that comes here likes the way the forum is run.
If you come from other  (manufacturer/OEM/whatever) forums and Ive been to my share, I know what, you're most likely, referring to.
But overhere we dont like flamewars, trolling, bashing against the brand/forum/manufacturer, we are keen to give help only and not feed someones personal vendetta, as that's how things on other forums tends to go, when not strictly moderated.
But this is just my opinion.
As said by Bernhard please list all of your components so we now what you have and we can help somewhat better.
As all overclocking is concerned, yes there is a risk that it goes wrong.
Is it safe to run 4.8GHz, 24/7? Nobody but time can tell since you run it out of specs and thus Intel doesnt give any guarantees, but will you get there with the cpu is also the question.
Some get it to +5GHz on air, others barely reach 4.3GHz, it all depends on what the cpu can handle and nobody can tell you that either, not even Intel.
Best way to start is read up, have you done that and think you know the basics of overclocking, then up the multi without any voltagemodifications at all and see how far it goes.
If you reach the point where you BSOD, then up the Vcore by 1 or 2 notch and see if you can get higher.
At the end you'll need to tweak some other things too and dont forget to stresstest it in between, its not punching the numbers and presto its done.
Overclocking can be a long and tideous process and as said, you'll need to test a lot to see if the system holds
The max safe Vcore, as what to tweak more, I dont know yet, but others here probably will, Im still saving/reading up for my P/Z68 rig.
A few more words of advice, dont overclock it with standard intelcooler and get a good quality psu and if youre not sure at all, leave it as is.
Thanks for all that info  , I think I answered it in my above post. The only thing I did backwards is I upped my multi to 46 and vcore to 1.35v then kept the multiplier the same and reduced the vcore until I blue screened then went back up 1. Kinda the same thing I suppose. Do i just do the same for 47 and 48 then? Other voltages I changes were, IO voltage to 1.176, SA voltage to 1.19 I think that was about it but the last 2 I just followed the guide for them, don't really understand what they do tbh

  • Help Overclock i5 2500k?

    Hello guys,
I just found out this great site with alot of helpful people and I would like to ask for a help with overclocking my Intel i5 2500k.
    My MB is: MSI Z77A-G43
and just bought a Coolink Corator DS cooler (Im hopefully going to install it today)
I checked some tutorials on OCing but there are many different options, some are the same as in the tutorials and some of them are missing. and I would like to not make some bad changes in the BIOS.
I have installed ClickBios 2 so I can post some screens of the options available:
Basically I know that main settings are CPU Ratio (Multiplier) and CPU Voltage.
But there are some other options that Im not sure about because different tutorials show different settings.
Internal PLL Overvoltage - (default is Auto, from what I've read it could stay on Auto?)
    EIST - enabled
Intel Turbo Boost - default is enabled, some say enabled some disabled
My OC Genie - not sure what this does
DRAM Freq - default is Auto (is this for RAM overclocking?)
Extreme Memory Profile - default is Disabled
DRAM TIming Mode - default is Auto
    Spread Spectrum - Disabled
CPU Core Voltage - The most important one, default is Auto, could stay on auto for lower frequencies?
    DRAM Voltage - Auto
Then there are the CPU features:
    Limit CPUID Maximum - Disabled
Intel Virtualization Tech - default is Enabled
    Power Technology - Custom
    C1E support - Disabled
    OverSpeed Protection - Enabled
    Intel C-State - Enabled
    Package C-State limit - Auto
I would really appreciate if someone could help me with these settings as Im newbie in this.
Should I touch the DRAM settings as well?
Basically What I need is to set the CPU Core Voltage from Auto to 1.20V and then bump up the CPU Ratio to 40-45? How do I know if the Voltage is enough? When it boots or do I need to run the tests?
Thank you in advance, I hope its not too much questions

What about Turbo Boost? Should it be disabled? Because when I OC the CPU, turbo boost would OC it more.
Also when OCing the CPU, wont the RAMs change the frequency accordingly? Therefore I should set it to 1333 or so?
No it should be enable and it wont overclock more the CPU and also the RAM will not change frequency.
    Quote from: Sh4d0W on 19-June-13, 21:38:05
What does the OverSpeed protection and Long,Short Duration Power limits do?
In simple words they are Power savings for normal CPU clock frequency limiting the Power that your CPU can consume. Overspeed protection should limit your CPU speed at some point (never figure it out how does that work if it works at all but general recommendation is to disable it to avoid stability issues).
    Quote from: Sh4d0W on 19-June-13, 21:38:05
And I cant CPU Core Vdroop Offset Control option anywhere, you can check the screens I posted above. Im not sure if the options in ClickBios differ from actual options in BIOS, but this option is not in the ClickBios program.
Well if its not then you cant control the vdroop, but check in Bios itself not with clickbios.

One last question, what is the best/preffered way to apply the thermal compound? Pea method or spread method?
Intel Processors definitely  Pea method, small drop in the center around +- 3mm is perfect.

The initial BIOS version(1.0) Overclocked just fine. But when I upgraded to the latest version of the BIOS(1.8/1.9) Problems began to appear. CPU FSB Frequency or CPU Ratio could not be modified even with +1Mhz , If do so save and exit bios restart system for the first time during Windows7 starting process after microsoft logo appear then suddenly blue screen then restart the system and bad things happened.CPU Fan running at full speed nothing shows on monitor‎,That's right The same situation with overclocking failure But this time reboot the system three times save system form failed overclocking mechanism won't work the only option is to Clear CMOS.After Cleared CMOS enter the BIOS Cell menu this time CPU Ratio shows 60.

  • Turbo Overclock with MSI P67-GD55

    Hey,
I'm trying to overclock my 2500K, but I don't want it to run always on the OC Clockrate. Now I read it should be possible to change the Turbo Multiplier so the OC only applies when heavy CPU Power is needed. When I check my BIOS and go to Overclock>CPU Features. There I find: core 0 on 37x,1 on 36x, 35x,34. But the problem is, that I can't change these values. Is this locked at the GD55 Motherboard?
    System specs:
    Latest BIOS version
    Intel Core i5 2500K
    MSI P67-GD55
4 GB RAM Kingston HyperX 1600Mhz
    Samsung Spinpoint F3
    Nvidia GTX275

Please read this article to better understand the turbo boost technology. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1501/2/
The technology applies max turbo boost to 3,7GHz only on lighter loads, i.e. when one core is being used. As sson as more than one core is under load the turbo boost will reduce until under full load the processor will only run at 3,4GHz. This ensures smooth transitioning between loads and a better performance under loads. There is no reason to disable this.
Furthermore, you will find when your PC idles, the clock frequency will actually go down to 1,6GHz or there abouts to conserve energy and reduce heat generation. Under light loads the Processor may run anywhere in between the minimum and maximum defined Intel clock frequencies.
If you were to increase your CPU multiplier to say 40 and leave everything else alone, then the maximum core clock applied will be 4,0GHz, but the PC will still reduce back to idle when there is no load. Give that a try and observe the behaviour. Download CPU-Z to monitor the voltages and frequencies.

  • NEOFis2r NO Overclock

    OK
Here is the problem. On arrival, I was unable to overclock my board with 1.2 BIOS in the BIOS. It appears to overclock, but when you check in Windows, indeed it is NOT. If I use the Core Center, I was able to overclock just fine, until I enabled Hyperthreading. Now even the core center will not overclock the board. I did an uninstall, and reinstall of Core Center and still no luck.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

    Leroy
I can sure understand where you are coming from, however, this board was and still is advertised as a fully functioning board. NOT a beta product. I will not "flash back" because this board CAME with 1.2.
I have no issues doing BIOS upgrades for performance improvements, etc., but this is a board that does not function. MSI has my money, and took it without bothering to tell me that the product did not work.
If I were impatient for a new feature, your comments to me would be justified, however I refuse to "wait around" for what was advertised to work, and just plain doesn't work.
You have no way of actually knowing if any of these issues will ever be fixed, you are only hoping they will be addressed. From what I have read, there has not even been a single post from MSI about these issues.
For me to get my money back from my distributor, I HAVE to return this board by this Wednesday. I contacted the MSI rep. personally on Friday about my problems, and have yet to get any sort of answer. In fact he played dumb to the whole issue.
Sooo what are we left with (from my perspecticve)
    1. Onboard sound mike input is crap
    2. cant O/c from the BIOS
    3. Cant o/c from the Core Center (After hyperthreading is enabled)
    4. Fans stop running when using the core center
    5. System hangs on boot at random
    6. BIOS 1.3 was released then mysteriously PULLED, with no explaination
    7. 1.4 apparantly still is killing boards.
    8. System temps are way off
    9. 2 days until I am STUCK with this POS
pardon my language... I call it as I see it....  X(

  • MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) won't overclock after bios 4.1 update

Just updated my bios to 4.1, unable to overclock after the update, multiplier stuck at 32 or sometimes 38.  I've set everything as before with bios 1.8 but no success.  Bios boots normally (does not say failed OC)
Is there some new setting to enable OC in 4.1 or
    Intel i7-3930k @ 4.7GHz * Nvidia GTX 680 (1.25GHz/6.6GHz) * MSi X79A-GD65 (8D) * 32GB DDR3 G.Skill RipJaws * SSD's & HDD's * Asus Xonar Essence STX
    CPU&VGA Watercooled * CoolerMaster HAF-932 * Corsair AX 1200W * 27" Asus VG278H 3D 120Hz * Windows 8 Pro x64

found out my issue...  I used to set the ratio limit for each core under CPU Features submenu but in 4.1 I have to set the "Adjust CPU Ratio" in overclocking menu, it default on auto.
    So all is good

  • My K8n neo2 wont overclock at all!! plz help...

Hi, I just build my new machine, and after much problems I finally have it up and running at stocks speeds just fine, the problem is that I spent a lot of money buying Top-Brand components so I could overclock a lot, (I like It) but I cant seem to go upweard of 205FSB!! anything above that and the board wont boot at all forcing me to clear the Cmos!! I find this completely unaceptable for this board, being that my last board (an Msi one with nforce2) could overclock and athlon XP 2500+ barton all the way up to a 2800+!! Im really dissapointed at this, if someone could give me a few pointers as to what tweak in the bios (Im using 1.3 right now) it will be very thankful!!  ok, my specs are below, thanks!!
    Athlon64 3500+ socket 939
    Msi k8N Neo2 Platinum with 1.3bios
    2+512mb Crucial Ballistix pc3200 cl2
    BFG Nvidia Geforce 6800Gt
    36gb Raptor Hdd
    Enermax 420W power supply
    Thanks!!!

I think your problem is your power supply. Check what that MAX amp on your 12V rail.
I have nearly the exact same setup as you do and was unable to overclock the memory without lowering the memory timings much earlier than I expected too. For me I'm able to raise my FSB up to 207 at 2-2-2 timings. The max overclock I achieved was 220 X11 at 2.5-3-3 for a speed of 2420mghz. But it was not completly stable (it would bout but would lock up while gamming).  I had expected much better results than this... I bought good memory (Ballistix pc4000) I had a good 480W power supply... my processors ceilling should be around 2.6ghz. After reading this review on Anand Tech I think I found the answer... Athlon 64 Memory: Rewriting the Rules
On page 10 they make the remark that their Antec True Power 465W power suply was limiting their ability to overclock memory.... The Antec True Power is rated to supply 22A on the 12v rail. My power supply is only rated to supply 18A.  I bet your 420W is rated even less.
After reading that I fiddled with async overclocking and was stable up to 230FSB... then my hard drive freaked out... I was using sata port 1. I moved the hard drive to SATA port 4, but haven't tried much overclocking since.  Maybe if they put out a bios revision that I can adjust the HT on I'll try again. Until them I'm settled for running at 2277mghz.

  • After overclock, EIST is really disabled even though BIOs says enabled (svet?)

I have just flashed to BIOS v1.7 with new Intel ME. Basically this is a problem I noticed even in Bios v1.4. I am overclocking i5-2500k with MSI P76A GD65 mobo
After overlocking, the cpu never idles. it's at what you overclocked to all of the time. This problem does not happen if I clear cmos and wipe all overclock settings. To verify that the cpu never idles I am using CPU-Z to monitor it. normally in idle the volt would drop to 1v and core speed to 1600mhz, but now it's at 1.264v and 4200mhz.
MSI Control centre confirms CPU Z, although the temperature in Realtemps show 31 idle at 4.2ghz lower than running prime95 at 4.2ghz (around 48c) so it means although processors are clocked and volted high they're not doing anything and is fairl cool.
Note: All I have changed to overclock is "Multiplier from 33 to 42" & " CPU Vcore from 1.20v to 1.25v" in the BIOS (did not use control centre)
If SVET could again help me out on this issues would be much appreciated.

OK I enabled C-State (No Limit) and C1E support.
Now my CPU has gone down to 1.6ghz but the voltage isn't going down. it's still set at my overclocking voltage. (do I have to set auto vcore voltage in bios? but that would mean lose the overclocking right?)
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=137321.0 they had the same problem back in May last year on the P55 boards, has the problem not been fixed even on the new P67A boards nearly a year later?

Sorry, I read the forum rules . Thanks for the reply, but I haven't actually updated the Nvidia drivers in a while. Right now they are on 311.06. I keep them at the stock clock speed as well. Also have a slightly overclocked i5 2500k. but that never effected Adobe products before.
I wonder, does VLC Player at all affect clip playback? I think I saw there little traffic cone.
Yup. Is PP CC using VLC instead of Quicktime? And/or would that have an effect on playback? Also how would I correct that? I imagine uninstalling VLC would.
Well, I uninstalled VLC, and now the Quicktime logo shows up just before the thumbnail loads instead of the VLC logo. I'm gonna assume that means that PPCC is using quicktime, but I STILL get no video in preview playback!
    Starting to get frustrated.
